Apple Watch user recounts harrowing health scare: 'I'd have just passed out
and died without ever knowing'

Time and time again, the Apple Watch has been credited with saving lives
with its heart monitoring, Emergency SOS, and fall detection features.

By Chance Miller

Time and time again, the

Apple Watch has been credited

with saving lives with its heart monitoring, Emergency SOS, and fall
detection features. Now, an Apple Watch user has taken to Reddit to share
how their

Series 7 saved their life, saying, "I'd have just passed out and died
without ever knowing if not for my Apple Watch."

Apple Watch user: "I'd not have made it"

The

Reddit user, u/digitalmofo,

explains that they decided to take a "quick nap" after lunch one day just
because they were feeling "kind of tired." After the nap, however, they had

over 10 notifications on their

Apple Watch

 saying that their heart rate

was abnormally high.

The Redditor then scheduled a video call with their doctor, who had them
check the times and pulse rates of the alerts, as well as their blood oxygen
level.

The doctor then went ahead and called 911 on the person's behalf.

Last week, I had my iphone/watch on dnd for work, and when I went on lunch I
was kind of tired so I laid down on my couch for a quick nap.

After the nap, I checked my notifications and had at least 10 that my pulse
was racing. I called out the rest of the day and tried to lay around, but it

didn't stop, so I scheduled a quick video with my Dr. My Dr had me check the
times and pulse rates, had me check the oxygen and then went ahead and
called

911 for me.

While the paramedics who responded to the 911 call suggested it may have
been a heart attack, this turned out not to be the case. Instead, the trip
to

the ER resulted in doctors finding this Apple Watch user had "severe
internal bleeding."

Tests revealed that this Redditor's hemoglobin levels were dangerously low,
at around 3.0 grams per deciliter (gm/dL). For context, the Cleveland Clinic

considers severe a low hemoglobin level for men to be 13.5 gm/dL or lower
and 12 gm/dL or lower as severe for women.

"They said had I not got there for a transfusion when I did, I'd not have
made it," the Redditor says. "I'd have just passed out and died without ever

knowing if not for my Apple Watch."

This is one of many examples we've seen of the Apple Watch's health features
helping save someone's life. As another Redditor says, even if the Apple
Watch

isn't as capable as professional-grade medical equipment, this age-old
analogy adage applies: "the best camera is the one you have with you at the
time."

Re: Perplexing Issue With Languages

2023-02-20 Thread Tali Sarnetzky
Thanks everyone.
I will try what you suggested. I haven't found where to change the
default language that is chosen, or rather the default voice, but that
is less important.
Yesterday, without changing anything, it worked alright for a while,
but then stopped working again. It seems to be a bug.

Again, thanks for everyone's help.

RE: Follow

2023-02-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
As Kelly said, the device in this case shouldn't matter although it really
helps if people at least say whether they use an iPhone or an iPad and, if it
is an iPad, whether it has cellular capabilities and a SIM card or not.
But the rebooting of iPad and router as well as doing a reset network setting
still applies, there has to be an issue with his network or the connection to
it on some level.

Hi all, I have a question about remapping keys for hardware keyboards. Is this
only doable on a full size iPad? Not the iPad mini?

I see there are further keyboard shortcuts with the global key. If the physical
keyboard doesn’t have the global key, it can be remapped.

Thank you,

Dear users

Please go to accessibility voiceover settings and put off the caption pannel.
Thse people using this pannel are affected with the bug.
I did some research about captions a few months ago and it was set to on.
Now for me the bug has gone;

When it opens, the Across clues are listed in a very accessible way, saying how many letters the word has and whether any letters are filled in. If I touch one (not double-tap but just touch), the letters I enter go into that clue. If I double-tap anywhere, a screen displaying the grid opens, and if I touch a square, I’m told which square it is and whether it’s blank or what letter it contains. Doing a scrub gesture returns me to the list of Across clues. So far, so good. However, I can’t find a way to hear the Down clues with the same information. If I touch an Across clue and flick down, there’s a Reverse Direction option, but whether I simply touch that option or double-tap it, the clues don’t switch to the Down clues. The clue at the bottom of the screen, which is the one being edited does change to a Down clue, but it doesn’t tell you how many letters are in the word or whether anything is filled in. If I choose the option to bring up the list of clues, the clues do say if a letter is filled in, but not how many letters total there are or where the filled-in letter is. So it seems to be maddeningly close to accessible, but not quite. Hi Lielle,

Thanks, that’s interesting. I have several languages in my rotor, and obviously
I can switch to any of them using the rotor at any time; but I thought that
Tali was specifically wanting Hebrew to be recognized as such automatically
when the rotor language was set to her default English voice, without having to
switch the rotor to Hebrew. You’re right, the automatic detection only works if

Hi everyone.

I updated to IOS 16.3.1 and it seemed to work OK. I use an SE 2020.

The only issue I have now is that my default language is English and

although the option is chosen as ON under accessibility and voice

over, the phone does not recognize Hebrew automatically and reads it.

I have to go to the rotor, find languages, change to Hebrew and only

then can I read it.

I looked everywhere and cannot find a solution. I searched under

languages under general, under spoken content and under voice over and

speech.

Any suggestion would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Tali

The archives for thi

smart cooking thermometer options

2023-02-20 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
Hello list,

On a separate general blind tech mailing list, someone inquired about an
accessible thermometer. Richard Turner who’s a member of this list suggested
the iGrill as a Bluetooth option.

I thought I’d ask the same question here as I did on that list as this is a
dedicated iOS group and hopefully get more specific iPhone feedback to my
inquiry…

Regarding this thermometer or perhaps another option, does the probe or is
there an option for a probe to dangle in something such as a pot or
receptacle instead of being speared into a piece of meat

Also, does the app for this thermometer or another model have to be open in
order for the temperature to be announced or is there a setting for the temp
to be spoken aloud in the background?

Thanks,

Cristóbal

Just to clarify, you can type or dictate the address once that search

Re: How do I say to Lazarillo where I want to go?

2023-02-20 Thread Lisa Belville

Rena,

When you open Lazarillo, you have several buttons that allow you to
interact with the app.  Swipe right until you ear search and activate
that button.  I would assume your normal Bluetooth keyboard commands
would apply here as all of the buttons are labeled correctly and the
search field is a regular search field.

When entering an address you can be very specific; you can include the
whole street address, town with city and state and the zip/postal  code,
if you know it.

That's what I have to do now, switch between the languages through
the rotor. It was weird that it worked so well in IOS 15 and not in

Dear users

Please go to accessibility voiceover settings and put off the caption pannel.
Thse people using this pannel are affected with the bug.
I did some research about captions a few months ago and it was set to on.
Now for me the bug has gone;

Perplexing Issue With Languages

2023-02-20 Thread Tali Sarnetzky
Hi everyone.

I updated to IOS 16.3.1 and it seemed to work OK. I use an SE 2020.
The only issue I have now is that my default language is English and
although the option is chosen as ON under accessibility and voice
over, the phone does not recognize Hebrew automatically and reads it.
I have to go to the rotor, find languages, change to Hebrew and only
then can I read it.

I looked everywhere and cannot find a solution. I searched under
languages under general, under spoken content and under voice over and
speech.
Any suggestion would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Tali
