RE: VO Accessible Wi-Fi Smoke Detectors

2023-12-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
That can be said for many so-called “smart” things. You can get a perfectly
good deadbolt for your front door for $50 or something like that yet people
including me spend $200 or $300 for a smart lock.
To each their own, our smoke alarms at my retail store connect via Zigby or
some such thing to the Alarm.com panel I have and they are very inexpensive. I
haven’t even checked lately if any other company apart from Nest/Google has
something like it, but there must be something out there other than the old
Nest ones..

not until they are more common and the prices go down.

I have 5 Dropcam Pro at my business which were originally an independent
company and later bought by Nest and while we did get a pretty long time out of
these cameras, I received an email a few weeks ago that they will no longer
work starting next April. Google is phasing out the Nest app in favour of the
Google Home app and apparently it is finally end of life for these. I also have
some newer Nest cams and a Nest doorbell which will continue to work so I will
have to decide if I want to stay in that ecosystem and buy whatever new cameras
Google has at the time or if I should use this opportunity to switch to
something like maybe the Arlo system from Netgear or Ring, there are many good
systems out there now.

I can think of several reasons why a wi-fi connected smoke alarm would be
useful. You could check the status of the battery, be notified when the device
needs to be replaced, perform an self test and get notified when the alarm goes
off even if you aren’t at home. Obviously none of these are needed.

It is simply called Journal and if you don't have it then I assume maybe you
have not yet updated to iOS 17.2. It is a new addition in that version and not
resent in the original iOS 17 release nor the iOS 17.1 release.

Agree 100% the app is indeed awesome! I only wish they’d integrate Spotify,

RE: Apple accessibility reply regarding haptic time on Apple Watch

2023-12-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Except that according to Apple they can’t reproduce my issue, according to them
it should simply be a double and triple tap regardless whether sleep focus is
on r not and it is definitely not like that for me.

I agree.
I find it mostly consistent. The sleep focus issue is similar to what happens
to voiceover on the phone or wherever if Zoom is also on. A couple gestures
have to add an extra gesture to function.
And I copied that actually from the phone watch app under Clock haptic time.

tirple ta work very consistently during the day, but at night when my sleep
focus kicks in I have to use a triple and quadruple tap. Once again, I have
tested and confirmed this now over and over for days on end and it probably
works for me 99% of the time, but with the excdeption of having to add 1 tap

When Apple Watch is in Silent Mode, tap and hold 2 fingers on the watch face to
feel a haptic version of the time.

When VoiceOver is on, double-tap to feel hours and minutes. Triple-tap to feel
minutes only. below is the hint in the Watch app on the phone for haptic time,
I assume the first part is referring to when voiceover is off.

It does not work consistently for me.
I have S E version of the watch. It seems like the first time I do a triple
tap, it doesn’t work. If I try it again, it usually works.
If voice over is turned off, it does not work.

A few days ago the discussion about haptic time on the Apple Watch came up

On my new Apple Watch Ultra 2 I can use haptic time with very good consistency,
however, there is one oddity which sounds like it is a bug. First of all, here
is what Apple Accessibility said in their reply to the email I sent them in
which I asked for clarification as to which gesture exactly should work and
what result to expect and whether there were any exceptions:

Hello Sieghard,
Expected behavior with Taptic Time while VoiceOver is enabled is to use a
one-finger double tap to feel hours and minutes, or a one-finger triple tap for
just the minutes. This is with the screen locked.
If the watch is awake, place your palm over the watch face to put it to sleep
or if Wake on Wrist Raise is turned on, turn your wrist downwards and then
perform the one-finger double tap. We tested this with a Sleep Focus enabled
and managed to get the same results.
If you are receiving different results when trying these above steps, we
recommend partnering with a member of our AppleCare Accessibility Support team
to further troubleshoot. If they are unable to resolve the concern through
troubleshooting, then they can escalate their findings to the appropriate teams
for further investigation.
You will find the contact information for the team in the following support
article:https://support.apple.com/HT209585

The reason why they mentioned sleep focus is because for me a 1 finger double
tap does absolutely nothing when my automatic sleep focus is on. It is set to
start at 10:30 PM and end at 7 AM and by now I have tested and reproduced this
at least 10 times. If I double tap the screen at 10:28 PM

I can think of several reasons why a wi-fi connected smoke alarm would be useful. You could check the status of the battery, be notified when the device needs to be replaced, perform
an self test and get notified when the alarm goes off even if you aren’t at home. Obviously none of these are needed.

I plan to reach out to the support resources they mention in the arcticle in

I would be very curious to know if others have to use a triple and quadruple

assume this could also have something to do with it.

some newer Nest cams and a Nest doorbell which will continue to work so I will
have to decide if I want to stay in that ecosystem and buy whatever new cameras
Google has at the time or if I should use this opportunity to switch to
something like maybe the Arlo system from Netgear or Ring, there are many good
systems out there now.

I can think of several reasons why a wi-fi connected smoke alarm would be
useful. You could check the status of the battery, be notified when the device
needs to be replaced, perform an self test and get notified when the alarm goes
off even if you aren’t at home. Obviously none of these are needed.

You can search for an app by asking Siri to find it in the App Store or you can
open the App Store app then go to the lower right hand corner where it says
search and do a one finger double tap then go to the top of the page and find
the edit field which is a little deceptive because it will say games apps and
stories and more. At first you don't realize this is a text field but that's

On my new Apple Watch Ultra 2 I can use haptic time with very good consistency, however, there is one oddity which sounds like it is a bug. First of all, here is what Apple Accessibility said in their reply to the email I sent them in which
I asked for clarification as to which gesture exactly should work and what result to expect and whether there were any exceptions:

Hello Sieghard,
Expected behavior with Taptic Time while VoiceOver is enabled is to use a one-finger double tap to feel hours and minutes, or a one-finger triple tap for just the minutes. This is with the screen locked.
If the watch is awake, place your palm over the watch face to put it to sleep or if Wake on Wrist Raise is turned on, turn your wrist downwards and then perform the one-finger double tap. We tested this with a Sleep Focus enabled and managed to get the same
 results.
If you are receiving different results when trying these above steps, we recommend partnering with a member of our AppleCare Accessibility Support team to further troubleshoot. If they are unable to resolve the concern through troubleshooting, then they can
escalate their findings to the appropriate teams for further investigation.
You will find the contact information for the team in the following support article:https://support.apple.com/HT209585

The reason why they mentioned sleep focus is because for me a 1 finger double tap does absolutely nothing when my automatic sleep focus is on. It is set to start at 10:30 PM and end at 7 AM and by now I have tested and reproduced this at
least 10 times. If I double tap the screen at 10:28 PM or 7:01 AM all is well and haptic time vibrates the hours and minutes. If I do so at 10:31 PM or a minute or two before 7 AM the doubl e tap does nothing, but a triple tap with 1 finger gives me hours
and minutes consistently. In the sam eway a quadruple tap during the time when sleep focus is on gives me just the minutes in haptic time, of course when sleep focus is not on I already get just minutes after a triple tap.

I plan to reach out to the support resources they mention in the arcticle in the new year because unless some other setting causes this, it should definitely be something they take a closer look at.

I would be very curious to know if others have to use a triple and quadruple tap and if so, whether this is also in certain scenarious or whether it is always so. Please make sure to also mention the watch model you have since I assume
this could also have something to do with it.

Best regards,

Sieghard

The reason why they mentioned sleep focus is because for me a 1 finger double
tap does absolutely nothing when my automatic sleep focus is on. It is set to
start at 10:30 PM and end at 7 AM and by now I have tested and reproduced this
at least 10 times. If I double tap the screen at 10:28 PM or 7:01 AM all is
well and haptic time vibrates the hours and minutes. If I do so at 10:31 PM or
a minute or two before 7 AM the doubl e tap does nothing, but a triple tap with
1 finger gives me hours and minutes consistently. In the sam eway a quadruple
tap during the time when sleep focus is on gives me just the minutes in haptic
time, of course when sleep focus is not on I already get just minutes after a
triple tap.

I plan to reach out to the support resources they mention in the arcticle in
the new year because unless some other setting causes this, it should
definitely be something they take a closer look at.

I would be very curious to know if others have to use a triple and quadruple
tap and if so, whether this is also in certain scenarious or whether it is
always so. Please make sure to also mention the watch model you have since I
assume this could also have something to do with it.

Best regards,
Sieghard

RE: Comparison between Envision AI and Be My Eyes AI descriptions

Hi. It sounds like you are on the screen where you have to either register as a
blind user or sighted volunteer. Choose the first option and either create a
free account or sign in with a service such as apple or google. Once you have
completed the sign up process you should be taken to the main screen.

Subject: RE: Comparison between Envision AI and Be My Eyes AI descriptions

Hello Richard and Everyone,

I was going to start a new thread but decided to ask my questions here:

After hearing so many wonderful comments regarding Be My Eyes, along with the
description you just posted about how the app can describe something without
human intervention, I decided to download it and give it a try.

Did I miss something? When I launch the app, I only see, no pun intended, 2
options (1), I need visual assistance, call company or volunteer and (2), I’d
like to volunteer, share your sight.

I was hoping to use the app’s AI image description, only, at this point.

How does one activate that feature?

The app store indicates that there are in-app purchases but, even after
exploring the website, I cannot determine what the various fees are for and how
they work. For example, in the app store there seems to be a purchase for
$19.95. What does this particular fee cover?

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

Subject: Comparison between Envision AI and Be My Eyes AI descriptions

I just updated Envision AI and it mentioned something about improved
descriptions.
I took a picture and it said, "I'm not sure but it could be a room with a tv on
a table."
I did the same scene with Be My Eyes AI and got the following.

The picture shows a living room with a cozy and homely atmosphere. On the left,
there is a wooden rocking chair with a black jacket draped over it. In the
center, a flat-screen TV is placed on a wooden stand, and beneath the stand,
there appears to be a cable box or DVD player. To the right of the TV, there's
a lamp with a classic design on a small table. Behind the TV, a window with
white curtains allows natural light to enter the room. On the right side of the
image, a decorated Christmas tree is partially visible, suggesting the photo
was taken during the holiday season. The walls are painted in a light color,
and there is a large, framed artwork of a Christmas tree above the rocking
chair. The floor is wooden, and in the foreground, a corner of a quilt with a
patchwork design can be seen, indicating the viewer might be sitting on a couch
or bed covered with this quilt.

Image description provided with Be My Eyes.

As far as I recall, being able to see the phone as a drive only allows you
to save your photos off the phone onto a PC.
It doesn't back up anything else simply from that drive listing.
I've not used that app so I'm not sure if it has a way to pull off your
installed apps and do all that stuff for back up along with the content.

It does not work consistently for me.
I have S E version of the watch. It seems like the first time I do a triple
tap, it doesn’t work. If I try it again, it usually works.
If voice over is turned off, it does not work.

A few days ago the discussion about haptic time on the Apple Watch came up
again and a few people posted they could not get it towrk at all whereas others
had no issues and yet again others seemed to get mixed results.

Best regards,
Sieghard

RE: VO Accessible Wi-Fi Smoke Detectors

2023-12-24 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I can think of several reasons why a wi-fi connected smoke alarm would be
useful. You could check the status of the battery, be notified when the device
needs to be replaced, perform an self test and get notified when the alarm goes
off even if you aren’t at home. Obviously none of these are needed.

No offense, but why does a smoke detector need to be accessible? They have 1

Does anyone know which Wi-Fi smoke detectors have apps that are accessible with

Cheers and happy holidays.

Re: VO Accessible Wi-Fi Smoke Detectors

2023-12-24 Thread Richard Turner
I was curious, so I did a web search for Wi-Fi smoke detectors and f∀ a few
reviews that pointed out that their are not very many, and that if you are not
at home, it can send a message to your phone ... and some have the ability to
put one in each room and then it can even alert you to which room the fire has
started. These sound very expensive. Some can be hard wired or have a ten year
battery. Weather the app will be accessible is anyone's guess. That is a
question for the manufacturer.

Re: Apple accessibility reply regarding haptic time on Apple Watch

2023-12-24 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi all,
I have a Series 7 Apple Watch (41 mm). I am still running Watch OS 9, as I
gathered that there were some bugs with version 10.
I use Taptic Time frequently, and pretty consistently. I also have Sleep Focus
enabled, but in my case this does not alter the number of taps required:
regardless of the time, I always do a one-finger double tap for hours and
minutes, and a one-finger triple tap for just minutes.
If I want the watch to remain silent, I turn speech off using a three-finger
double tap, the same gesture as on the phone. Haptic Time works fine when
speech is turned off. My watch is not an SE, by the way, it's the standard
model. I hope this is helpful.
Best,
Nicky

Agree 100% the app is indeed awesome! I only wish they’d integrate Spotify,
Netflix and other 3rd-party streaming apps, which hopefully, in due time will

Okay, I Think I'm Addicted, to the New Apple Journalling App for iOS 17.2 or Later

2023-12-24 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I started using the Apple Journalling app, a couple of days ago, and wow! I
think I'm in love.

I have the app set to automatically make suggestions, based on my activity,
throughout the day, and boy is it thorough. These suggestions are excellent
launch pads from which to compose an entry.

One can either type an entry or make an audio entry, kind of like an
officer's log frequently used throughout the Star Trek television franchise.

You know, many, many moons ago, when I was but a lad, I used to keep a daily
(almost daily) journal, in hardcopy Braille. I think I did this for over 7
years and, eventually, the amount of paper grew too large to store in my
tiny, one bedroom apartment, so I gave it up.

Now fast-forward, in time, and now we have the technology to not only write
with a Braille display or QWERTY keyboard but to also make recordings and
store that precious information on a tiny handheld device. Absolutely
amazing!

Mark

Subject: Apple accessibility reply regarding haptic time on Apple Watch

A few days ago the discussion about haptic time on the Apple Watch came up
again and a few people posted they could not get it towrk at all whereas others
had no issues and yet again others seemed to get mixed results.

You will find the contact information for the team in the following support
article: https://support.apple.com/HT209585

Best regards,
Sieghard

RE: VO Accessible Wi-Fi Smoke Detectors

2023-12-24 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Debbie,

You ask an interesting question.

I’m not certain why you would want a smoke detector that has an accompanying
app but I can tell you that Home Depot and Lowe’s sell smoke detectives that
have voice responses built-in.

I have several throughout my home as I add more and mor as the older ones
expire.

These models have user replaceable batteries and there is a test button on the
unit that, when pressed, causes the unit to speak in a very loud and clear
voice that tells you if the unit is in good working order. When the battery is
low, the unit will automatically repeatedly announce that the battery is low.
Finally, and I hope you never need this, when smoke is detected, the unit makes
a low loud noise and repeatedly says that smoke has been detected.

I absolutely love these models as the cost, per unit, is more than reasonable
given the accessibility of the unit. I think the last one I installed costs
around $20.

Oh, and they have models that can be wired directly into the electricity system
of the house, also.

A quick Amazon search will result in several different models being displayed
but, as I said, for me, I just go over to my local big box home goods store and
buy them as needed.

Does anyone know which Wi-Fi smoke detectors have apps that are accessible with

Re: Apple accessibility reply regarding haptic time on Apple Watch

2023-12-24 Thread Tom Rash
It does not work consistently for me.
I have S E version of the watch. It seems like the first time I do a triple
tap, it doesn’t work. If I try it again, it usually works.
If voice over is turned off, it does not work.

Alison, when in the app store at the bottom of the screen in the list of tabs
double tap the search tab. Then touch the screen near your volume up button
then flick right until you hear "games, apps stories and more" and double tap.
this is your search field. When you are finished typing swipe right to hear
your list of options.
