RE: additional space on Box

2013-09-01 Thread E. Wayne Brumley
Hi Juan. I already had an account when I discovered the app. When I opened
the app, I went to settings and logged in from there if I remember
correctly. At least after reading your message I went to settings and found
places to log in, log out and a keep Me logged in switch. If you would
like more details write me off list and maybe we can problem solve. My
first thought now would be to open Box and go to settings now that you have
an account.

  Good luck.

RE: additional space on Box

2013-09-01 Thread E. Wayne Brumley
It is another cloud storage product which is a lot like Dropbox except that
it doesn't create a virtual drive on your machine

I had a couple of gb free storage and recently received an upgrade to 10
gb. Since I hadn't used it much because it wasn't very easy to use with a
screen reader I am assuming anyone can now have 10 gb free storage. The
good news for me is that they have made it very accessible and have an
IPhone app which works well with Voiceover. Raul also posted a few days ago
that there is a cloud player app which will play music which is stored on
Box or Dropbox. I haven't gone and bought that one yet because I've been
going a bit nutty with app buying lately and I have a lot of music available
through my Amazon cloud player.

RE: MBraille - On the road experience

2013-09-01 Thread E. Wayne Brumley
Sounds like it might be a good solution on a long road trip but I agree the
$30 price tag would mean it would have to be a very long trip to justify it.

Subject: MBraille - On the road experience

Hi all,

Just wanted to convey a neat little MBraille experience. I had lunch with a
group of new friends. As one of these friends was driving me home, we began
driving on some rough road. I thought what a great chance to test typing
accuracy! I pulled out my iPod Touch 5th gen and began typing a message.

I first tried typing a 3 sentence paragraph using the touch typing keyboard
method, and I ended up making lots of mistakes and found it was difficult to
hear what I was typing (I was not wearing headphones). I didn't get past the
first sentence before getting a bit frustrated.

I turned on standard typing and found it was easier to type via split
typing, but I still could not hear the letters well and had I turned up the
volume I would have probably annoyed others so I did not do so.

Finally, I launched MBraille and found that typing the 3 sentences was not
only quickly accomplished, but I also found it very easy, and I had almost 0
spelling errors.

I'm assuming the difference is that while touch typing and split typing, one
must very steadily hold the device in one hand while trying to type with the
other hand. This results in both hands simultaneously performing different
tasks. On the other hand, using MBraille, for the most part, both hands are
moving in synchrony and are placed almost 100% identically equally to one
another which facilitates holding the device and entering data as the space
one needs to interact with the device is much smaller (6 points rather than
26+ points associated with the letters on the keyboard).

After using MBraille I switched back to regular touch typing and standard
typing, and again I was having difficulty completing the typing task.

In short, whether bumpy road or not, MBraille does seem to offer a very
quick and hassle free typing experience.

I gotta say, it is still hard for me to pull the trigger on the price
because $30, to me and only me, seems a bit excessive for an app less than 1
meg in size. I hope this device goes on sale at some point as I'd definitely
purchase it for $15 or $20. :)

Two thumbs up for MBraille!

Joseph

RE: Cloud Music - Was Re: additional space on Box

2013-08-28 Thread E. Wayne Brumley
Thanks, Raul. I'll get that one and then I'll have something to do with all
that space I am accumulating. I actually do still have a lot of music I
didn't buy from Amazon and I really don't want to use up all that IPhone
storage with music I seldom listen to. I'm so fascinated with exploring my
little piece of Dallas with Blind Square I've hardly used anything else
recently. That too will pass though and this looks like something worth
moving to next.

Not exactly about Box, but if you are into playing music from the Cloud, the
app called Cloud Beats from
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cloudbeats-music-player-for/id573192227?mt=8
is great because it will play music from cloud sources like Box, Dropbox,
and Google Drive. Something to keep in mind in case you dont'
want to pay money for iTunes match or Amazon Music.

You are correct. Buddy message is what messaging calls it, and it cannot be
changed. In group chat using iMessaging, the name of the person is listed,
rather than buddy message.

2013-08-27 Thread E. Wayne Brumley
I don't totally agree with me either sometimessmile.
I think you've got a sane approach to privacy and security.
It isn't really such a new thing to give up privacy to allow someone to
better provide one with a service such as gps navigation or book
recommendations. Anyone who has ever applied for a job knows about giving
up privacy for a potential gain. I don't think giving Dropbox information
about me is a threat to my security but I am aware that there is some risk
in doing so. Using judgment about whom to trust with what and why is our
challenge these days. I don't blame Joseph for having concerns about the
Dropbox / Mailbox issue although I considered it a minor privacy issue and
not a security one. To me, someone getting my email address is a possible
source of spam and annoyance but not a serious threat to my security. I
hope I'm right because joining a list such as this one where all list
members can get my email address means some risk of annoyance but a risk
well taken because of the excellence of most of the posts.

Hi, coming in late on this, but yes I suppose you are right. Although I
don't fully agree with everything you say, you do bring up valid points.
What I do to stay safe is make sure I don't use the same passwords for
multiple services. I also still use location services, but if an app doesn't
really need them, then i don't allow it. For example, I give access to
location services to my GPS navigation apps as they are useless without that
access, but I don't give it to my Music ID app which is used to identify the
song I'm listening to at a restaurant, mall, or girlfriend's house. it's
good to stay same smart, but it can also quickly turn into paranoia if not
careful.

I think I'll go re-read 1984 now. smile.

RE: Detection of the light sources - new iPhone app

2013-08-27 Thread E. Wayne Brumley
I looked at Seeing Assistant online and was a little unclear about it also.
Is it a crowd sourced app such as Tap Tap See?

If the light source app uses only IPhone resources is it a standalone. If
it is part of Seeing Assistant would it be subject to the 40 command per day
limitation?

Subject: Detection of the light sources - new iPhone app

Dear all,

We are pleased to announce that the application SeeingAssistant-Light is now
available on AppStore. It is a separate part of the application
SeeingAssistant-Home functionality operates as a single application.

SeeingAssistant-Light allows blind people to detect the light sources.
During operation, the application generates a characteristic, continuous
sound.

The tone of that sound depends on light intensity - the more intense light,
the higher the tone.

User can locate the light source by turning camera when the sound has the
highest pitch - camera then points to the brightest point.

Sound can be turned on and off by triple-tap on VoiceOver mode.

User can not only check whether light in the room is turned on, but also
whether some electronic device with display is turned on, or even whether
LEDs on electrical device is turned on or off.

additional space on Box

2013-08-27 Thread E. Wayne Brumley

In case there are users needing more space than the free Dropbox space, you
might want to look at Box.

I just got a notice that my account had been upgraded to 10 gb of free
space and I didn't have to do anything.

When I set it up to collaborate with a friend, I didn't think it was very
accessible. When I looked this time it had improved a lot and they had a
link to a more accessible version which worked even better. I installed
their IOS app on my IPhone and found it be very VO friendly as well.

If anyone wants to check it out I'm putting in a link just below.

RE: contact ringtones not playing - revisited

2013-08-25 Thread E. Wayne Brumley
Thanks for that suggestion. That got me back to experimenting a bit.
Didn't seem to matter although I thought at first it did. I put in the
country code at the beginning of a contact I had deleted and recreated.
However, I did that to one I didn't create and it didn't seem to make a
difference.

I did notice though that the hint on a contact ringtone says double tap
to indicate a type. So, Before I went down and selected the ringtone, I
went to the heading ringtone and double tapped that. Then when I selected a
custom ringtone it played.

It worked once but so far not the second time but at least it worked
once.

Interesting to me is the fact that all my contact / custom ringtones used
to work just fine and I'm not sure just when that changed.

   Thanks for that pointer.

Hi Wayne,

I know this may not help you, but for whatever it's worth, I never had a
problem assigning custom ringtones to any contact and having them play when
said contact called.

I wonder if it has to do how you have the phone number entered in your
Contacts. I guess an easy way to find out is to check how Voiceover
announces a caller you want to assign a ringtone to. For example.

Assume you have somebody by the name of Jack Miller in your contacts and
Jack's phone number is 202-555-1234.

Now, get Jack to call you and see if Voiceover says Call from Jack Miller
or if Voiceover says Call from 202-555-1234.

I think if it says Call from 202-555-1234 this might be the problem.

Contact ringtone problem solved

2013-08-25 Thread E. Wayne Brumley

I'm hoping I was the only one with this problem but posts I saw on the
archive suggest maybe not.

When opening a contact, double tapping edit, and going to ringtone it is
necessary to double tap the button. That opens up the ringtone choices. I
find that if I just flick my way down to the tone I want, double tap to
select and then save I'll still get the default ringtone when that contact
calls.

To receive my chosen ringtone when I receive a call from that individual I
have to also double tap the heading ringtones which is below the heading
for default. I apologize if this is self-evident to everyone but me but
I've only seriously paid attention to my IPhone for anything but phone calls
and mail for the two weeks since I upgraded to an IPhone 5. Maybe there is
someone else new to the process who needs to know it if things don't seem to
work the way they should.

A recurrent posting of the rules would be a good idea I think also. Doesn't
usually stop people from doing things like posting OT messages or anything
but at least one can try.

Wayne

Hi guys,

Aren't we giving away some privacy by installing this app in order to
receive another 1 gig of Dropbox space? In other words, this free space is
probably not so free. Where is our email address going to go? Is it possible
that we will inadvertently give spammers a live email address to be used
some time down the road when we have forgotten that we gave these people our
email address? Please keep in mind that this is a serious question to
ponder. I'm not just trying to stir stuff up, I'm actually concerned when it
comes to my privacy, so I'm hoping for some thoughtful feedback as this
concerns all of us who are cautious as to where our personal information is
going. (Smile).

Thank you Grant for the thoughtful specific reply without over generalizing
or resorting to extreme examples posted by others. I'm not one who is fond
of having to fix what could have easily been prevented, and since I'm not in
need of every bit of storage I can find, I think I'll pass on the
opportunity.

Hi Joseph,

It's a perfectly valid question. Keep in mind though that the Mailbox app is
owned by Dropbox, so it's not like you're giving your information to another
company. Also, once you get the extra space, if you decide you don't really
want to keep the Mailbox app (and indeed, it isn't that pleasant to use with
VoiceOver) you can simply delete the app from your phone then login to your
Dropbox and Gmail accounts and remove the permissions that you gave it.

RE: Alerts during a call?

2013-08-12 Thread E. Wayne Brumley
It does seem that a triple press of the home key would be the simplest and
easiest solution. You could turn VO on to enter numbers and off when you
are just talking. Probably get texts and some other things but as some have
pointed out these annoyances are necessities to some.
The good thing about triple tapping home is that it requires no changes
to the IOS.

If they silence VoiceOver during a call, I hope they leave the keyboard
VoiceOver readable. Otherwise, one would not be able to enter numbers into
an automated system. Perhaps, have it be an option in VoiceOver settings
either to be silent during a call, or not, depending o user preference,
except for leaving the keyboard readable.

Hello Tessa, Donna, Jodie, Andy and others,

This is one of the most annoying characteristics of Voiceover and I hope
that all of you who dislike this as much as me write to
accessibil...@apple.com to request that in some future update Voiceover is
just silenced when a call is active. Andy's suggestion to turn off push
notifications to me is something I should not have to do, I have an iPhone
and use apps which have push notifications because that is what I want and
having to turn off all push notifications just so my phone calls aren't
interrupted is equivalent to saying you have to turn off WiFi, Bluetooth,
Push email and location services just so I can get better battery life. I
don't need a fancy smartphone if I have to disable half its features to
 stop
it from doing one annoying thing.

This discussion has come up before and I know some people have argued in
favour of all of this chatter happening although I really don't know why
somebody would want their phone to start reading a text message, an email
 or
a news headline while one is on a phone call. When this happens to me I
sometimes have to ask the other party to hold on for a moment until
Voiceover shuts up or I can shut it up because I can't hear them any more.
The iPhone is after all also a cell phone and while some people may use it
more for other stuff than actual calling, for me it is my only personal
 line
and I also use it for my business so I do receive and make a lot of calls
and I really hope that maybe in iOS 7 Apple has done something about this.
In my opinion Voiceover should just be quiet during a call, but I guess it
would be OK if at least there was a setting where one could enable this
 and
that way those who like to hear all of this stuff while they are on the
phone can continue to do so. The same goes for Voiceover constantly
announcing the call duration, also annoying and completely unnecessary, if
 I
want to check how long I have been on the phone I can easily touch the
screen and check and I don't have to hear it every 20 or 30 seconds. I
understand that I can turn speech off with a 3-finger double tap and I
sometimes do that, but it's a major pain in the winter when my iPhone is
 in
my pocket or belt clip under a heavy coat and I am wearing gloves.

I use the 3 finger double tap to turn off voiceover. For me this is faster

Alan, if you don't necessarily want a case with an on board charger, you
might want to consider an external charger like the Incredicharge.

I can charge my phone for several times on a single charge. I can also use
my phone while it's charging on the Incredicharge. It has two USB
connections as well as a built-in micro USB cable so I can also charge my
Booksense Standard, my Aftershokz headphones or my Sansa Clip zip and still
be using the phone while all three are charging on the same charger.

I got it at Amazon for about $27 and free shipping.

It's not the most accessible, at least not for me because the LEDs used to
indicate charging status are very small. Still, I liked the idea of having
something that would charge multiple devices at once or my phone for more
than one time.

There are more kinds of cell phone chargers out there then just what Apple
offers. I have 1 such charger made by iGo. It's only a 1800 mAh battery
with 2 USB ports. It's smaller then a deck of playing cards but can
recharge a dead iPhone. There is a recessed charge button that when pressed

starts the recharge cycle. You use your phone's sync/charge cable and when
you view the battery status in the top right-hand corner it says the present

status and charging. When charging is complete, the battery disconnects.
You can actually be walking down the street talking on your phone wile it's
recharging. I have used the charger to recharge both my wife's and my
iPhones. Granted, it charges slower that way but left charging over night
it will get the job done. It also has the flip out AC wall plug so you can
use it as an AC source for 2 devices. I'm told but have not seen it that
iGo also has the same thing but that they add the ability to charge the 1800

mAh battery via solar giving you a wide range of choices. So I'm thinking
that with a 1800 mAh rechargeable battery solar charger and an AC plug, that

should pretty much cover anybody's recharging needs. Even with out the
solar part, the battery is small enough to Cary in a pocket or purse and
still pull you out of a tight spot when you find your iPhone a wee bit
short.

This small of a battery is great for the iPhone. I doubt though it would be

of any use with an iPad but sense I don't own one I can't speak to that.
Radio Shack, big box stores and only God knows who else offers recharge
solutions. You can also read about new gadgets in iPhone Life magazine.
They also have a free app that is accessible. Our friend Todd Burnheart
writes for them every now and then and always has a peace well worth
reading.

The only battery I have seen so far which has the wall plug that folds

 Hi Tom,

I just tried the Talking Goggles update on my 4S and for the first
item, a bag of rice, the app came back almost instantly with Jasmin
Rice. I tried a few more things like 2 different bottles of vinegar
and the app performed some OCR and read the result and for me it's
definitely working. All of this was done in video mode which I prefer
 for Talking Goggles.

I did also perform one comparison test by taking a picture of the
bottle of white wine vinegar in still camera mode with Talking
Goggles and it read a bunch of stuff including wine vinegar. I then
took the same picture with Tap Tap See and got Wine Vinegar without
the other stuff. A bit earlier I used Tap Tap See on that same bottle
and got the full White Vine Vinegar, I guess it too recognizes
slightly different things based on exactly what it sees.

As to why Talking Goggles doesn't work for you I can't say, but it
would be good to know if you have Tap Tap See to do a similar test.
Hold your phone in as close as possible the same place and take a
picture of something with both apps and see if you get a result from
Tap Tap See and not from Goggles.
If you don't get a result from either one then you know that
something else is at fault and you might want sighted help.

I had a problem in March where suddenly Digit-Eyes recognized
absolutely nothing. I finally asked one of my employees to take a
look and try it and he told me that the picture was all blurry and
the camera didn't focus. I called Apple and after making sure the
lens was clean which it was, doing a restart of the phone and
eventually a factory reset of iOS they said that apparently the
camera was not working as it should. I had the phone for about a year
and a half at that point, but I bought Apple Care back when I bought
the 4S as an unlocked phone directly from Apple and 3 days later I
had a new phone. Well, I guess probably a refurbished phone, but a
like-new phone anyways. Apple provided the return label in the box
and all I did is take the new phone out of the box, put my old one in
it (after doing a factory restore again to wipe it clean) and call
UPS to pick it up. I was definitely glad I had purchased Apple care
since otherwise I would have been
6 months past my warranty period.

VO accessibility notice or refund issue

2013-08-09 Thread E. Wayne Brumley

I wrote the accessibility group at Apple regarding the refund issue and I
got a reasonable response yesterday. I would cut and paste the response but
my previous message in which I did that doesn't seem to have reached the
group.

Basically they said that they investigated the issue and that although
Sieghard got his refund, the message was confusing. They said they would
work with their customer people to see that they understand that refunds are
appropriate if an app isn't useable because it doesn't work with VO.
