Re: My experience with Apple Pay.

2015-04-20 Thread Peter Durieux
Hi,

Is voiceover reading the amount of cash you have to pay?

Op 20-apr.-2015, om 08:15 heeft M. Taylor mk...@ucla.edu het volgende
 geschreven:

 Hello Brent,

 To answer your question:

There is absolutely nothing with which one needs to line up the phone in
order to complete an Apple Pay transaction.

Simply stated, once the cashier rings up your order, all you need do is to
hold the phone over the transaction terminal, with your finger touching the
phone's Touch-ID sensor. The phone needs to be about 1 to 2 inches above the
 terminal.

The process is so easy that I no longer engage my Bluetooth headset or attach
any earphones to the phone in order to hear VoiceOver--not that there is
 anything in particular to hear.

From a visual perspective, once the cashier rings up the order, the terminal
display engages. It looks like a small television or airport monitor.

When you see this display engage, you simply hold the iPhone about an inch or
so away. When you do this, the iPhone's display engages also, shoing the
passbook app. Then, you will feel the phone vibrate and the transaction is
 complete.

For those with no vision, and I have used this method, just to see what it is
like: when the order has been rung up, simply place your secondary hand on
the terminal in order to locate it, then place your primary hand, with your
finger on the Touch-ID sensor of the phone, about 1 or 2 inches away from
your secondary hand and the process will work just fine.

Writing about it will always sound more involved than actually doing it.

I have become so comfortable with the process, that I no longer even hold the
phone 2 inches away from the terminal but, rather, simply place the backside
of my hand, holding the phone in the required manner of course, against the
terminal and wait until I feel the phone vibration.

In line, today, a patron standing beside me at an adjacent terminal,
apparently after witnessing my technique said, That's the coolest way I've
ever seen that done. I'm going to do that next time. We all laughed and I
 thanked him.

How do you figure out where on the machine to tap your phone to make it work?
From what I understood, you need to line up the little hole next to the back
camera with something on the payment terminal, unless people are describing
it badly that it doesn't really require you to tap in the correct place.

I set Apple Pay up when the last software update happened. Last Friday, I

Even FaceTime and Skype don't see my microphone :) Slience on the other side :)

 Hi Peter,

What iOS device do you have? I just tried this on my 5S. As you said,
dictation did not work when I was streaming Audible to my Airport Express
using Airplay. I even tried it with Voiceover turned off since it’s
relatively easy to tap the dictate button and I got the same result. I would
hear the SIRI listening tone followed immediately by the tone SIRI makes when
 it stops listening.
I then went back to the Audible app, tapped on Airplay and selected my iPhone
again and as soon as I did SIRI and dictation worked fine, I did not have to
reboot. I am wondering if this could be different for older devices.
At least in iOS 8.1 Voiceover on the iPod Touch Fifth Gen once again stays on
the iPod, after I upgraded to iOS 8 Voiceover on the iPod Touch was sent to
the Airplay device along with the audio stream which was like in the first
days of Airplay and a big pain in the neck because there is an at least 3 to
4 second delay when you do something until voiceover announces it that way. I
guess slowly bugs are being fixed and considering how it has been reported
that Apple will be pushing iOS 8 updates quicker and how they are already
working on iOS 8.2 and 8.3 there is hope for more fixes. I don’t even
remember that there was ever a Dot 2 or Dot 3 update in any previous iOS
version except in iOS 4. iOS 5, 6 and 7 only saw a Dot 1 update and some
subversions of that so it will definitely be interesting to see what features
Apple will reveal in 8.2 and 8.3 providing the rumours are correct and iOS 8
will go as high as 8.3.

If anybody is interested in the history of iOS versions, there is a good
Wikipedia article called “History of iOS” at
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_iOS

You can have lines set in the rotor as well and then just flick down with a

A couple good things about iOS 7.1.
If you touch the message body while composing an Email, the VoiceOver cursor

Also, If you start filling in the to field in an Email, you can flick to the
right and go through the various results instead of having to slide your
 finger down the screen.
You can now put your finger on a line in iBooks and have it read you that
line, which did not work in iOS 7 and perhaps even earlier.
I just thought I'd mention a few things I've noticed that are improvements in
 iOS 7.1.

 Hello List,

Just this morning I replied to Ed’s question about the next iOS update saying
that iOS 7.1 Beta was released to developers back in November. I mentioned
that Beta 2 came out before Christmas and that I expected Beta 3 to make an
appearance any time. Well, I just saw that Apple released Beta 3 to
developers this morning, nothing much mentioned with respect to changes,
fixes and new features except something about iCloud and improvements in
playing audio books in the Music app.

I found a couple of articles where the author claims that the public release
of iOS 7.1 won’t happen until March because the new “iOS in the Car” feature
is supposed to be part of it and it is apparently not ready. Typically Apple
would release the first major update in January and I have a feeling that may
still be the case because I have not read anything like this March release on
any of the more credible sites like Mac Rumours or 9 to 5 Mac. I guess we
shall see, but if they release 3 beta versions of iOS 7.1 in 6 weeks
(November 18 was when the first Beta came out) I just can’t see them taking
another 2 months or more for the public release, they would be at Beta 6 or 7
by then which for a Dot 1 upgrade I just would not expect.

 Regards,
 Sieghard

it should be doable with vo, but no real good documentation ...
what I'Ve seen from others:

ruby motion
phone gap.

I Myself has given up for ios, android seems a lot better in terms of writing
programs in an accessible way. everything is documented well, from building an
gui in xml etc.

I Know, ios also ddefines gui in xml, but xan't find any doc describing the
different elements and such.

I Know gui can be created from the code, but yeah :)

just my 2 cents

Re: The Apple Braille Crisis. It's Got to be Fixed for our Kids

2013-09-20 Thread Peter Durieux
hi,

in some cases braille is very imported to do a certain task. for example, i'm a
system- and network engineer and doing the job with tts isn't doable and
productive. the only thing that works for me is a linux box and brltty. for
all my other tasks i use ios of mac. one reason i need vmware on my mac is good
braille support for console and apple lacks good braille support on mac
terminal.

what i want to say is, braille is very imported in daily life, so having good
braille suppoet may improve productivity and such

of the fact of internationalisation, apple have a long way to go. my feeling is
that a lot of things aren't tested propperly. for example, we can have hq
voices for different languages, but the speech rate option you can configure
doesn't work. why giving this option that isn't tested propperly?

even vo on mountain lion feels more like a beta. same for vo on ios7. indeed
new great features, but personally, i prefere a good tested screen reader then
a beta feeling with a lot of features.

just my two cents.

With kind regards,

-Peter Durieux

Hi guys, hate to be the dissenting opinion, but as a totally blind person I
don't really have any use for Braille in my life. I have a Braille display
that has an 8-year pile of dust on it. One of the dots went out and I need
both of my arms and legs so can't send it in for repair.

As for school, yes, Braille can be helpful, but I don't think it is
essential with a little creativity. In college I handed in my math
assignments having typed out using Word and Excel. I explained my code to my
professors and they were all ok with it straight through college. I also
used a Perkins Brailler and came up with my own Braille code as having to
learn nemeth after just having learned Grade 2 and Grade 3 Braille was not
going to cut it as I already had quite a work load in college and just
didn't have the time to learn Nemeth code. My math code was much, much more
efficient than Nemeth. I took a gamble and it paid off for me.

In terms of reading and writing, well, for the most part I'm a curious
person, and learning how to spell is just a letter-by-letter review away
from accuracy. What is going to doom writing both in blind community and
sighted world will be texting and the general acceptance of incredibly, I
mean incredibly poor etiquette by those using cell phones to communicate. I
come across messages and think who in their right mind would post such a
mess as this poor spelling and grammar says so little about the sender, but
then I realize the person might be texting and has no interest in proper
 spelling and grammar.

If one is a curious person, he or she can go a long way to prevent poor
spelling and grammar as well as increasing their vocabulary with a free,
easy to use application such as WordWeb.

Let's not forget that electronic Braille products are outrageously expensive
(depending on type of product). One absolutely need the help of the
government to make such a purchase, so while doing it for the children, the
children is noble, right now it is not practical without the assistance of
 the state.

I'm concluding that so little blind people use Braille because it just isn't
essential in our modern lives. Heck, with apps like MBraille, one can get
the benefits of using Braille without having to take out a second mortgage
to purchase a Braille display, Braille printer, and tons of Braille paper.

I just recently came across a YouTube video of a blind TV voice over actor.
This guy was absolutely amazing and has been very successful in his chosen
field--he sounds like the Budweiser commercial guy with low rumbling voice.
He played some samples of his work to demonstrate how fast he has to learn
how to read and speak. I was amazed at how fast he could read Braille to
complete his work. Well, turns out he's not reading Braille at all. He has a
headpiece on and is simply repeating what he has recorded via his screen
reader. By the way, this is exactly how I presented my various speeches when
at university. My point is that there is always a way when one doesn't
have tens of thousands of dollars to purchase Braille products.

I do fully expect an incredible retaliation for my personal dissenting
opinions, but this list is not hear primarily for the sake of proponents of
Braille use, it is hear for the acquisition of knowledge as shared by all on
the list, which means I too have some say so on the matter as it concerns my
views and experience with use of Braille.

If you for go the update all option, you can update individual apps, so
you can just skip the app you don't want to update. This only works if
you know you want to avoid an update. If you are trail blazing for the
rest of us though, you might want to roll back an update.

My own experience with Four Square is a few accessibility issues seem to
show up in each major update but Four Square is pretty good about
getting them resolved fairly quickly in subsequent minor updates. It
might be a good candidate to skip updating until you get the thumbs up
 from the list.

BTW, I've read of some apps available to you if you jail break that will
allow you to pin an app at a certain level. This way, you can avoid some
tedium by using the update all button while keeping some problem apps
 from being updated.

$4.99. Its three main competitors which I have are Around Me (free),
LocalScope (I don't remember what I paid, if anything, but no more than
$1.99), and Where To (which is $2.99). Look Around announces the name of the
nearest intersection and has a shake to announce feature. It also has
significantly fewer POI in its database, and only works in a few countries.
That said, to many people, it is preferable because it is specifically
 targeted toward the blind.

Another example is Access Note. This app costs $20. It has a few features
that most other note taking apps do not have, is targeted toward the very
small market of the blind, and is 10 times more expensive than most of its
rivals. The rivals, incidentally, access more file types and have more
features, but do not provide specialised braille support or track the
location of the reading cursor when the app is closed.

Being a tiny market, as a general rule, we will get higher prices for
specialised apps that are targeted specifically toward the blind.

Hi Irene,

Indeed there are some options to let others edit your playlist.
However, when you create an playlist, the default is that no one except
yourself can edit.
I think you can change those settings by editing the playlist .

Hope this helps

 Hi Irene,

There are two things you can do.
Double tap and hold, after the tone swipe with 1 finger from left to right.
Then you can select something else in the top row, for example search.
This is the way a normal user should make the menu item visible.

The other way is just clicking on the open sidebar button, but it seems that
this method doesn't work every time.

 Hi Sandy and others,

There is a great podcast about using Fleksy on Applevis.
It helped me a lot. The only concern I have with Fleksy is that it doesn't
support my native language. Hopefully in the near future they will add more
 languages.
So the more people can have the benefits of this great app.
The more practicing typing, the faster you'll type I think. :)

Re: Stuck in playlist on spotify

2013-03-09 Thread Peter Durieux

Re: New Skype Update is in the App Store

2013-03-07 Thread Peter Durieux

 Hi Listers,

There is a new Skype update, here are the 4 things they mention in the
 “What’s New” section:

 Beautiful New Calling Experience
Mark all your recent chats as read with just a few taps
 General Fixes and Improvements
One-to-One chats now appear in the correct order

I just installed the new update and had a quick look and I don’t see any
major issues. The DialPad is still working fine and if you are in the Recent
tab there is now a new button at the top right called “Tick”. If you double
tap it you are asked if you want to mark all recent chats as read and you can
also choose “Yes, don’t ask again” which means the next time you double tap
on the Tick button it will just go ahead and mark all recent chats as read.

When you are on a call it appears the bottom row of buttons has been
rearranged a bit. The End Call button now seems to be by itself just above
the Home Key which is nice because it’s very easy to find it.
Right above it are now the Speaker, Mute, DialPad and Show Options buttons.
If you want to switch to speakerphone just double tap on “Speaker” it will
then say that it is selected and you can now actually flick left and get to
“Earpiece” and “Speakerphone”, double tap on Speakerphone and the call will
 switch to speakerphone.
I think in previous versions you had to find these buttons by sliding your
finger around after tapping on the button.

I think it’s safe to upgrade in any case, but if you want extra insurance you
can always make a copy of the current Skype app in your Mobile Apps folder in
iTunes Media and that way you could get back to the previous version.

 Regards,
 Sieghard

The second app is called Conditions. It's a very simple weather app that is

Ipad2 and last generation of AppleTv

2013-03-01 Thread Peter Durieux
Hi listers,
There is a new Ipad in the pipeline for me in the next couple of weeks.
My old Ipad2 will go to my parents.
And yeah, my mother's birthday is also upcoming, so I thought,
why shouldn't I buy an AppleTv for my mother, so she can export her display to
her big screen tv.

The question is, can you forward the hole display over airplay, such as safari
surfing, mail etc or is it restricted only to played media such as films and
youtube stuff?
If the last is true, I'll find an other birthday present I think ;)

Thanks for your answers

take. Like it will start to scroll and then decide I did not do it
sufficiently and bounce back instead to where it was. In listening to
how to do things, I would have never thought the two finger scroll
would be the subject of endless frustration and problems. Well, it is.
And guess what, you have to scroll with that gesture a lot. Swiping
will not ever scroll the screen. You have to. It is a task I dread and
want to throw the bleeping thing every time I have to do it because it
gives me so much problem and should not be like that. I have been
using the IPhone continuously sice 2010 and had some experience before
that. I know how to do gestures including those with multiple fingers
and rarely are they a problem for me to execute on the IPhone. So no,
it is not just my fumbling because I haven't learned this type of
 interaction.

Inconsistent operation is one reason. Braille access is another.
Inconsistent operation of the gestures is a third. And the reasons you cited
with the lack of audio feedback when moving apps and the inability to label
buttons is another. I'm glad I have the luxury of being able to play with
the Nexus 7 tablet, but there is no way I would move from the iPhone to
Android at this time. ios isn't perfect. But the accessibility is
considerably more polished, IMHO. The mail app is another area where ios is
really good, especially with that new delete feature. I don't want to start
a Android versus ios thread. But for me, an end user firmly in the camp of
my device being a means to an end, rather than a fun thing to play with that
must offer me endless choice, I'm happy to stay with ios for now.

wifi access, it never auto-switches over to the wifi if bluetooth remains on.
I have to turn bluetooth off and then tell the phone to reconnect to my

Hi Neal,

If I remember well, in the keynote presentation of the Iphone5 there was
something about high quality voice support. But your carrier need to support
this type of technology. None of the telco operators in Europe support this at

beast. I'm not looking for broadcast quality. What I do get frustrated with
often is the poor duplexing on the devices. If someone is talking and you
start talking, they won't hear you until they quit talking. Perhaps this is
carrier specific? I'm guessing not, but I'm on this list to learn, so please

I totally disagree here. I understand this is pretty subjective stuff, and
I understand if some say the iPhone 5 sounds better than the 4S and other
iPhones but, sound as good as a land line? A cell phone? I don't know
about that one. If the carrier supported enhanced audio, maybe but, none in
the U.S. do. Especially for the person who is on the receiving end. I've
yet to receive a call on a land line and not been able to tell immediately
the other caller was using a cell phone.

Hi all,

Your information was excellent.
Just upgraded to the new version, everything is working, but changing habits
isn't that funny sometimes :)
To bring up that sidebar by swiping from left to right works for me.
(double tap and hold, after the tone swipe with your finger from left to right)
Activating search, playlists etc works as expected.

Yeah and I also stumbled with the shuffle thingie in previous versions.
But it seems to have a fix in this release.
The shuffle is only activate d in the current playlist or album.
More testing will clarify it I hope. :)

So far my first impressions.

Re: iOS 6.1 and accessibility from Applevis

2013-01-29 Thread Peter Durieux
hi,

this isn't a bug.
the autochangevoice feature works as follows:
only with the default language the voice is changed when a lang tag is found
on a webpage or the language entry is found in the mail header, voiceover
switched to that language if available.
sometimes websites or mailclients aren't propperly configured and sets english
for example when the content is written in an other language.
therefor voiceover doesn't change language if you are using an other one then
the default.

opes this clarify a bit.

 Hello everybody:

The bug I experienced with reading webpages and email messages generated

when the US English voice is selected as the default. When this kind of
content is accessed, VoiceOver will attempt to read it in the language of the
country where the email or website is generated from this even happens if the
message is written in English. However, if you switch the voice to British
English or Australian English, the message reads fine. I do still do not have
an explanation for this problem. I Will copy Apple accessibility on this

 Subject: DND iOS 6.0.2

 Hi,

Has anyone noticed on either an iPad or iPhone running iOS v6.0.2 that DND is
 no longer functioning properly?

I have 3 iPad Mini's here and 2 iPhone 5's, all running iOS v6.0.2. All had
DND manually off, with the schedule DND mode active in the Notifications
 section.

This worked perfectly in iOS v6 - v6.0.1, however now, DND remains on
permanently when the schedule in theory should have disabled it.

I have only noticed this behaviour since installing the update.

This is not likely Voice Over related, as 2 of the iPad's and 1 of the
iPhone's are not used with Voice Over regularly.

Anyone noticed at all this issue, I have turned DND off, inc the schedule
feature, and even performed a Reset all settings on one of the devices to
 see… same issue.

 Thoughts?

 Hi all,
Voiceover (on MBP) has suddenly stopped working. When I turn the

Voiceover on a couple of times, nothing. Then, usually on the 3rd

nothing. 5th time = ‘voiceover off’ … and so on. Voiceover announces
it has been turned off on alternate presses of the keyboard command
 but is otherwise completely silent.

So, for some reason, it’s able to turn VO off (and tell me so), but VO
doesn’t actually speak when it’s on (and doesn’t tell me it’s on). My
only thought is that some sort of window is coming up before VO kicks
in that is interupting it (though I can't explain why it can tel me
it’s turned off without any trouble. Also, if I press the physical
on/off button to force a shut down, the dialogue that comes up is also
 read fine.

 Any thoughts?

on this issue that it will be solved in the release of i/Os 6. The point is
that number 6 has been released already and the Greek voice has been broken
in it. So I;m not sure whether we are being heard here or just given a
standard answer. I imagine somebody spending a few hundred pounds on the

2012-09-25 Thread Peter Durieux
Hi,

Let me clarify a bit.
When you touched for example on a button with label Login the following text
is send to the text-tospeech engine:
login button. So, when you touch a key on the keyboard the character will
also be send to the text to speech engine to be spoke out.
The punctuation is a filter to the text that is send to the tts.

So, I decided I would investigate when I got home this evening. Before I

I turned my iPhone off to disconnect the call. It took a significantly

defines accessibility? is something not accessible if you cannot

understand it, the Sign in process can work without disabling
VoiceOver. Essentially, the app is divided in to columns, and the
standard flicking left and right gesture does not work. However, if
you touch the screen in the appropriate place, VoiceOver is able to
give the info to you. But to get to the other column on the screen,
you have to tap something on the right side of it, and then tap the
left side to get back to that series of columns. I'll have to play
around with this when I get the time, but as I understand it, this is
 how it can be done.

Thank you all for your feedback! I'll give stanza a try and see how well it
 works.
I've tried renaming files with the xml extention to html, and it didn't
quite work out. I wanted the xml version of the file converted, as this
would preserve any formatting attributes found in the DAISY content.
As it stands, I'm much more impressed with the readability of files
available in the iBooks app, than I am the read2go app. Being able to
 search
text, being able to use the command to move by page, and the fact that
braille support just seems better in iBooks are my reasons for choosing it
 over Read2go.

Re: Wireless connection issues.

2012-08-20 Thread Peter Durieux
Hi folks,

Here are my thoughts on this issue.
It seems that this issue came alive in ios 5.1.1 on some ios devices.
I've seen this on a ipad, ipad2, iphone 3gs and iphone 4.
My 4s seems not to have this problem.

Also it seems that it is independently from which accesspoint you use.
I'm using a cisco and had this problem. A friend of my has a linksys and has
the same issue.

It seems that Apple has implemented some powersaving features in their wifi
drivers of at least made some changes.
If I don't use my ipad2 for a while, it has disconnected from the wifi. When I
start an app that needs network connectivity, it connects again without any
problems.
this leads to miss some push notifications and stuff. It seems that the
implementation for a 4s is slidely different.

This is the only thing I can think of causing this problem.

Just my thoughts and hopefully apple will fix this in a new release. ;)

annoying when I'm trying to do Facetime, for example. So the
frustrations you're experiencing are not happening to just you. I've
tried resetting the router, resetting my network settings on the
phone, all to no satisfactory solution. I've honestly given up.

 Hello,

I have experienced simular issues, though in my case, I have only
experienced connectivity issues when connected to a router supplied by AT*T.

I wonder if folks could chime in with which internet providers they have
experienced problems with. I am not trying to say a particular company is
the problem, it could be the same brand of router or another issue
altogether. I am going to get the brand of router which I have had problems

with. Maybe we will figure out a piece of this very strange puzzle.

 Mary,

I strongly agree on securing your router. If some one makes use of your
network for unlawful activities, it is you who will be answerable.

The behavior you are experiencing since the upgrade is not uncommon.
Several people I know, including two on my own plan have had this
experience and reported it to both ATT and Apple. Both companies deny
the problem, yet the reports continue. One phone was replaced; on mine
the problem seem to resolve. The tip off on my own phone was a 185 meg
download charged to my data plan at a time when the phone was several
feet from the WIFI router. You can bet I did not pay for the overage.
I suspect there is an issue involving the current OS version and certain
 routers.

 Hi Mari,
First, that unsecured router's not a good idea, the 54G's easy to

I have the Iphone 4 and 4s, in addition I have a home wireless network
 that
is unsecure. My router is a Lynksis wrt54G2 after updating the Iphone 4
 to
IOS 5 i noticed that the wireless connection would just drop with out
 sudden
warning, I had never had that happen before. I have been back and forth
 with
Apple and ATT who both say its not the device, the iphone 4 is two years

 old
and I recently upgraded to the 4s I noticed the same issue the iphone 4s
could not keep an active connection the router...

Now, I do have a few computers / laptop connected just fine to the
 router.
Could it be that since the firmware is not up to date on the router that
could be the issue, or could it be the router itself as maybe some
 security
settings are not the newest or settings need to changed to work better
with Iphone's? I really need help as I use my Iphone constantly and
 would
like to be able to run off wifi.

I've not seen any blue tooth bone conduction headphones, but the folks that
make the AfterShokz headphones are talking about coming out with blue tooth
 this year.
Personally, the AfterShokz headphones don't fit my head very well. They are
probably a quarter to three-eighths inches shorter than would be ideal for
me. But for those for whom they fit, they have gotten good reviews.
The problem I see with their design is that if you have a small head, they
will be too big because they are not adjustable.
