Prime Video

2022-01-20 Thread richardr_turner
Good morning,

I am a Prime Video subscriber.

I received an email today announcing a new series for this fall, The Rings
of Power, The Lord of the Rings.

The show will not be on the air until September 2, 2022, but there is a
trailer. When I went to the web site to check out the trailer, I began
exploring the details about the show.

They list all the various subtitle languages, but only one audio language,
English. Nothing about Audio Description.

Other shows show English [Audio Description] if it is available.

I called Amazon Accessibility and was transferred to Prime Video support.

The guy I spoke with was told by whomever he checked with that when it says
"audio language English" that means also with audio description. That is
clearly a load of bull. The guy I was talking to checked a couple of shows
I suggested and they have the words Audio Description in brackets following
the word English if they have the audio description track.

So, while it is 9 months before the release of the show, I asked that he
provide feedback to the team that audio description needs to be included.

And, if it is going to be included, they should add that to the web site.

Amazon Prime Video support has its own phone number. If you ever need or
want to call them, it is 888-280-3321

Later,

Richard

Subject: Hey Siri on Apple Watch?

Having upgraded to an Apple Watch series 7 in December it was only when I was
some way from my iPhone 12 Pro Max that I discovered that Hey Siri was not
working on my watch.

I have checked all options but everything appears to be configured correctly.

The watch is running watchOS 8.3.

Siri works when the Digital Crown is pressed.

The watch has connectivity with wi-fi when out of range of my iPhone.

I remember that with iOS 15 there was an issue with Hey Siri when Voiceover was
used and wonder if a similar issue exists with the Apple Watch.

The watch was set up as a new device.

Thanks.

RE: how to create a group text

2022-01-20 Thread richardr_turner
No,

I was assuming, and we know what a risk that is, that you already had these
folks in your contacts.

If they are not in your contacts, I would put at least one of them in the
contacts so you have a name when in the messages app and not just a bunch of
numbers.

You cannot put multiple numbers in a single contact and expect to treat that as
a group.

In messages, start a new message, put all the phone numbers, or names, in the
to field.

Then, messages will remember that as a group.

It seems clunky because it is.

There is an app, ABC Group Messenger that you can create a group texting list
that might be more what you want.

Keep adding people in the to field. When you have all five entered, send a
text.

Now, when any of them answer, it will go to all five people.

You will be able to find that group when you begin to write to any one of them,
if you flick right to the results the group should be there.

Hi, Everyone!

I just purchased a new iPhone 13 Pro Max and am wondering what charging brick I

it is a larger phone, I should use that charging brick.

Any suggestions would certainly be appreciated.

Yes, I saw you went way above and beyond, but did you open up a support ticket
or a ticket to have your account reinstated or both? I’m just wondering if I
did anything different. You can have your account reinstated at

Richard,

I had the exact same experience starting on Monday January 3. Did you submit a
ticket to have your Outlook account reinstated? The person I talked to at the
Disability Answer Desk said they’d take care of that for me, but after not
hearing anything for 48 hours, I submitted another ticket myself. I was finally
able to verify my account on Saturday January 8. It’s been fine ever since. I
don’t get a lot of group messages sent to my junk folder. I also checked my
recent activities, and I didn’t see any suspicious activity. I also have
multifactor authentication enabled.

I was tempted to go back to using my Gmail account, but it was a lot of work
switching everything over to an Outlook account, so I wasn’t looking forward to
going through that again. Since it’s been working for a few weeks now, I’m just

wasn't working as it should.

He went to a different link with Microsoft and got me unlocked and said now,
"this won't happen again, you are set."

Eight days later, I was locked out again.

I wrote someone I know personally that works for Microsoft and spelled out the
situation and asked if there wasn't someone higher up I could talk with. This
was December 28th. He was on vacation.

On January 31st I shut off my computer, and had already turned off my Microsoft

assure them I had not tried at all for 3 days, and didn't turn on my computer

After getting it unlocked with the nice ladies help, I strongly insisted I talk
with a supervisor about this whole process. I was first told there were no
supervisors ... but I said there had to be someone to handle customer
complaints ... and after 40 minutes of being put on hold while she looked into
who I could talk with, and her saying it is probably the groups I belong to
that are triggering the spam warnings/suspicious activity, she put me in touch
with her supervisor... Note, she did have a supervisor. He in fact, told me he
was the one to give her the theory that the groups I belonged to were causing
the problem. More on that soon.

They got me unlocked again, but he theorized that it would be locked again
because of the groups.

He did say he would put in a ticket to the developers about this situation

So, at that point, I changed my groups subscriptions to a Gmail address rather
than my Microsoft Account address.

I belong to that are triggering the spam warnings/suspicious activity, she
put me in touch with her supervisor... Note, she did have a supervisor. He
in fact, told me he was the one to give her the theory that the groups I
belonged to were causing the problem. More on that soon.

They got me unlocked again, but he theorized that it would be locked again
because of the groups.

He did say he would put in a ticket to the developers about this situation

So, at that point, I changed my groups subscriptions to a Gmail address
rather than my Microsoft Account address.

I didn't like the way Gmail sorts things into the Inbox, and the "Important"
box, so I created a new Comcast.net address, which I am now using for all my
group subscriptions.

While some emails end up in the Junk folder, because I'm not using my
Microsoft Account Email, it hasn't resulted in my Microsoft account being
locked.

Back to my contact at Microsoft, I heard back from him later that day, and
gave him the update as to where things stood.

I requested access to someone higher up again to try and deal with this
issue.

He forwarded my email to someone much higher up the chain than him.

Because that higher up person took this seriously, I was put in touch with
two of their Microsoft 365 Office App Rangers.

I had a conference call and spent a lot of time going through the issues and
explaining how I no longer am using the Microsoft Account for these email
groups, so the unlocking the account is not the prime issue; but am still
having random emails from the groups ending up in Junk.

Their solution, is below.

**

I received the below from a Microsoft Support person whose title is:

Microsoft 365 Apps Ranger

*from the App Ranger:

The emails are ending up in the Junk folder because the "From" and "Reply
To" email addresses don't match so Outlook treats it as a junk item.

Adding the group emails groupn...@groups.io to
Outlook's safe senders list will not stop them from going to the Junk
folder. You will need to add the email address in the From field to the Safe
list

Example from the header of a groups.io email:

From: x...@gmail.com "

Reply to: orbit-rea...@groups.io

* my comments:

It doesn't matter the group, and it applies to googlegroups.com as well; if
the from and reply to fields do not match, Microsoft flags that as spam.

If you are using your Microsoft Account email address for any groups.io

Barbara,

I think what you are dealing with is the “No item discovered” setting under:
settings, accessibility, VoiceOver, Audio, Sounds and Haptics, and there is a
ton of new things you can set sound and haptics for. One of them is No Item
Discovered.

Seem if turning off the haptic in there solves this.

Hi list!

So I finally updated my iphone 8 from IOS 14.08 to 15.2.1 and now I am
experiencing this weird and kind of annoying vibration issue with my phone.

I notice it on the area of the home screen where you switch between pages. I
touch that area and the phone vibrates like crazy. It also does it in the
overdrive app on the player screen and in the app store. I really don't like
it. Is there any way to change or turn off this feature?

I tried going to sounds and haptics in settings but turning haptics off didn't
get rid of this feature. Any other ideas?

RE: Mbraille question

2022-01-16 Thread richardr_turner
Are you using contracted braille?

I’d turn off speak characters.

I use away mode with contracted braille and only have words being echoed.

You also want to check the setting about how much of the display the app is
using.

I don’t remember exactly what it says, but you may be getting slightly out of
the ideal area for writing.

Louise,

Have you gone into Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Audio, Auto Select
Speaker in call and made sure it is on?

That should make the call switch to speaker when you move it away from your
head, or if you answered the phone while it was away from your head, if you
just cover the upper portion of the screen with your hand and pull it away
again, it should flip to speaker.

If that setting is on and it is not changing to speaker where the volume will
be far better, then there is possibly a problem with the proximity sensor that
is by the front facing camera.

Thanks Richard. I tried exporting the original file option hoping I could
attach the document. I wanted to attach a couple of multi-page documents,
sending them individually to a friend. I thought "export original file" would
allow me to attach the files I want to send. Thanks for your quick response.

Open the file in Voice Dream.
Double tap on Document at the top.

Double tap on export.
You'll have choices there, pick one, then pick mail, and follow the prompts.
I think you will have to do them one at a time.

Hello Listers.

I have some files in Voice Dreaam Reader that I want to send to a friend. How
do I attach such files to an e-mail. When I go to insert attachment, the files
don’t even show up. Should I copy them to Writer before sending them as

RE: BARD Express and BARD NLS on a Windows computer

2022-01-13 Thread richardr_turner
For me, I usually do just use the app for finding books and adding to the wish
list.
But, if my phone is in the other room on the charger, etc., BARD Express is
brilliant for adding books to the wish list.

I would hate the addition of anything social media like. If it were a
completely separate third party app, that would be fine since I could ignore
it. 

I used BARD Express when I switched back to Windows and was using cartridges
for my NLS Player. I found it a nice way to download books and manage my
portable media. Once I switched to using my iPhone as my exclusive way to read
books, I didn't find it much of an advantage over the combination of the BARD
Mobile app and the BARD web site.

One feature I've requested in the past that would make all of these resources
more convenient for me would be a way of marking a book read and having that
indicated when searching for books. I also think it would be cool if a social
media aspect could be added, where people can comment on books, mark books they
like, display books similar to the one your looking at and so on. Kind of like
Good Reads for BARD. Maybe our tax dollars shouldn't pay for such a service,
but maybe NLS could open up the interface so a 3rd party could develop such a
service.

Not at this time. I don't know why more blind people don't use the program
more. I know people on email lists who are very reluctant to use it. Some
people think it is to slow, or more trouble then it is worth. I like that when
going through the most recent books, I can just down arrow to each book and
just listen as I hear things like title, author, annotation, narrator, total
length of the book, whether the book is in a series, the file size of the book
and more. You can't get that kind of info from the main bard site or at least,
not that easily.

Apple Releases iOS 15.2.1 and iPadOS 15.2.1 With Bug Fixes for Messages and
CarPlay
Submitted by AppleVis on Wednesday, January 12, 2022.
Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team
Apple has today released iOS 15.2.1 and iPadOS 15.2.1.

According to Apple's release notes, these updates resolve the following two
issues:

Messages may not load photos sent using an iCloud Link
Third-party CarPlay apps may not respond to input
As these appear to be minor updates, our expectation is that they do not
contain any accessibility changes for blind and low vision users; however, if
you notice any changes, improvements or regressions in your own use of the
software, please post a comment below with your findings.

Minor bug fixes for car play and messages. And probably some security stuff as
well.

It is a fabulous program and makes finding BARD books so much easier.

I would be more then happy to show someone how to use bard express for windows.
I am a beta tester for the program. It is a very useful program when you need
to work with bard. Also, adding books to your wishlist to use with bard mobile
is super easy and worth the program just for that. Also, when you find any
bard book, you can hear all kinds of info about that book and you can decide
how much info about each book you hear.

Here is the information from the BARD Express web site. Once you login with
BARD Express, you never have to log in again. And, something they don't
mention below, you can add books to your wish list directly from the book
details screen. Making it extremely easy to add books for later download on
your device via the wish list. Or, download them to your cartridge. Read the
documentation for full details.

What is BARD Express?

BARD Express provides NLS patrons with an easy way to
 access BARD. Use BARD Express
to browse thousands of audio books and magazines, download them to your

BARD Express simplifies the process by providing a menu-driven interface,
reducing the need to memorize a complex set of keyboard commands. This means
BARD Express can be used with as few as four keys, while providing advanced
functionality for the more adventurous user.

I've gotten messages on my SE2020 from Verizon to confirm something I've been
trying to do. A link follows a bunch of numbers identifying the message, I
guess. Double tapping on the message doesn't activate the link.

Any ideas? Thanks.

RE: need help getting my SE 2020 working properly again

2022-01-09 Thread richardr_turner
Have you done a reboot?

I think the SE 2020 works like the newer phones where you press and release the
volume up, then press and release the volume down then hold in the side button
about 8 or 10 seconds and release and wait for it to come back on.

The first two steps need to be done quickly, don’t hold in the volume buttons
just press and release, then hold the side switch …

I forgot to put my phone on charge last night. Consequently, battery ran down.
Since recharging, I discovered that I can not give voice commands to open my
aps. When flicking around the screen, voice over does not speak. Yet, when I
hold the home button and say “voiceover on”, I get message saying voice over is
on. When trying to unlock phone, have to enter pass code, as it is no longer
responding to my fingerprint.

Called apple accessability for help. Did screen share. While on phone, my
phone behaved like I would expect it to. By that, I mean that I could flick to
all my aps and hear everything as expected. Hung up from phone call and
discovered that my phone went back to doing what it was doing prior to calling
apple accessability. Called apple accessability tweo more times. I was
talking to rep and when they went to check my account, they never came back.
This was 7-8 minutes in to the call. I truly have never seen my phone behave
like this. Please help. Thanks.

I just went to the audio vault and saw no way to sign up. Am I daft or
what? I typed in Boys In The Hood to see what might come up and I saw nothing
relevant, just a table with a few headings and no info.
P.S. I saw your sign off. Yes Penguins might make you smile rather than feel
angry due to their lovely communal generous and committed ways of being, but
the destruction of their ice habitats may wreck your peace of mind.

Duane,

The Audio Vault has the mp3 file of E.T. with audio description.
It is free. It is just the audio, of course.
You just \sign up with your email and you can go in and search for either
movies or TV shows. Tip, the first search field on the view all TV shows or
all movies is to order by date, skip that and use the second search field which
is by keyword.

Here is the direct link to the search results on that page, which won't
probably help until you have an account.

Richard, that's cool! Since I'm just using an iPhone, and no computer these
days, do I need any sort of APP like I do for SERO, or can I just go to
audiovault. Come to think of it, I used to have an account here ages and ages
ago, before the iPhone helped me leave my Windows 7 computer behind. I'm not
even sure it works anymore. LOL

RE: BARD and the Locked screen

2022-01-09 Thread richardr_turner
Thanks Duane,

Yes, I find BARD and braille to be a challenging combination.

My only theory as to why the BARD app has this problem is either the phone
resources get low which Apple will deny, or it is Gremlins. I personally lean
toward the Gremlins explanation. .

Thanks Richard. Right after I sent that message, it occurred to me to do
exactly what you say in your response, and it worked! I can't help but wonder
why that happens in the BARD APP so often. I just recently started using the
APP again after some time because I just wanted to hear a human voice reading
to me. I haven't tried reading Braille with BARD lately because so much is now
already available in Voice Dream, and Braille and Voice Dream are working very
well together. I always appreciate your help on the iPhone list.

Talking time details

2022-01-08 Thread richardr_turner
I'm pasting what is now on my web site about Talking time. I just updated
it.

If you lose this, go to my web site:
https://www.turner42.com and go to the Useful Apps link and look for Talking
Time.

Talking Time, $1.99 by Fortuisoft

. TalkingTime speaks the time on the hour, half-hour and/or quarter-hour.
. "Set and forget". The app only runs during setup so you can do other stuff
with your phone, and it won't run down your battery.

The developer is very responsive and working to make the app as accessible
as possible. I reached out to him about the app before purchasing it and he
put me in touch with Pam Coffey, who is another VoiceOver user who had
sorted out how to setup the app. She shared the below with me and gave me
permission to pass it along.

I have modified her instructions to fit iOS 15.2, but Pam deserves credit
for the bulk of the instructions.

How to set up the Talking Time app, written by Pam Coffey, and modified by
Richard Turner.

When you open the app, the entire screen is taken up by the in-app settings.
The first button is not labeled. Double tapping on it just gives you the
message to set the schedule and forget it.
The next item simply says " Set desired schedule then exit the app."
Next is Background Sound, which is now turned on by default, which is what
you want.

When you double-tap Schedule, there are four columns of time indications:
on-hour , beginning with midnight at the top of the screen, and ending with
11 PM at the base of the column; quarter past, beginning with 12:15 AM, and
ending with 11:15 PM at the base of the column; half-past, beginning and
ending with 12:30 AM and 11:30 PM; and three-quarters past, arranged in the
same way. If you wish, for example, to have it alert you every 15 minutes
throughout the day, beginning at 6:30 AMand ending at 10:30 PM, you will
double-tap 6:30 AM and long press (also known as double-tap and hold) on
10:30 PM. Next, double-tap on 6:45 AM, and long press 9:45 PM. Then,
double-tap 7 AM, and Lon press 10 PM. Finally, double-tap 7:15 AM, and long
press 10:15 PM. If you _only want it to alert you at a few times of the day,
simply double-tap the times you wish to be alerted (e.g., 6:30 AM, 8 AM,
2:45 PM, 6 PM and 10 PM). If you have selected a time and then wish to
deselect it, double-tapping it again will toggle it off. If you wish to
deselect _all of the selected times within a column, find the one nearest
the top of that column, and long press it.

As of Version 4.8.1 of Talking Time, you can do two more things with the
announcements. If it is a spoken announcement, you cann quadruple tap on the
time and a text field opens up. You can enter any phrase you want spoken
each time that announcement is made.
Now hit the back button so you are out of the schedule screen and back on
the main screen.

Next is Speak Changes. Speak changes is now on by default which helps when
making adjustments.

The next heading is Voice, or Ding. Double tap and you can set each quarter
hour to be a voice announcement or a ding. See the explanation of the Ding
patterm below.

Both Voice announcements and dings are limited to a total of 64 per 24 hour
period.

high ding on the hour (minute hand at the top)
high-low ding at quarter after (minute hand moving down)
low ding at half past, (minute hand at the bottom)
low-high ding at quarter of (minute hand moving up)
The next item is Voice". Here, you can choose from among a number of
speaking voices; and, you can also choose speaking rate (which is a bit
quirky), whether or not you want it to begin with "The time is .",., and
whether or not you want it to include AM and PM. Once you've set these
options, double-tap "Save"; then, the next item is Volume. The volume
setting for this app is related to that of the ringer and alerts; therefore,
if you wish to make a major change in the volume, you may need to go to your
general settings, choose "Sounds and Haptics", and enable "Change with
Ringer and Alerts"-at least until you have it set to your preference.

The remaining items are "It's Not Working", "Feedback", "Share", and
"About".
Its Not Working is a way of testing to make sure your settings will work.
Double tap "Its not working" and then immediately bring up the app switcher
and close the app. Within a few seconds, you should hear a message from
Talking time confirming that it is working. If you don't hear it, try
rebooting your device and try again.

Notification settings

As of iOS 15.2 and version 4.8.1 of Talking Time, the only notifications you
need to have on under Settings, Notifications, Talking time, are Allow
Notifications and Sounds On. That way it won't clutter your notification
center. After setting it up, take it out of the app switcher and it willl
cntinue working in the background. It takes almost no power and doesn't drag
down your phone resources.

Does the slider etc., work with Amazon devices?

I don’t own any but an Echo Show 5, and have no need of such a routine, but if
it works on their own devices, then they care, at least, some about
accessibility.

Granted, in an ideal world, they would make sure it works in Apple Devices, but
you run into the issue of Apple blaming them, and they no doubt will blame
Apple.

Let’s hope it works on Amazon devices and somehow the pressure to fix it for
Apple can be applied.

RE: question after pairing the blue tooth google home with your phone can you have the audio from vo come from your phone and not the speeker?

2022-01-08 Thread richardr_turner
Yes, that was recently covered in the thread on VoiceOver speech and Bluetooth
speakers.

Open settings, Bluetooth, and on your Google Home Mini flick up to more info
and double tap.

Then, double tap on device type.

T\Flick through the options and double tap on speaker.

It may take a minute to take effect, and you may notice the VO volume on your
phone fluctuating a bit, but it should keep VO on the phone and all other audio
through the speaker.

RE: voiceover speech and bluetooth speakers

2022-01-08 Thread richardr_turner
I cannot say why you have not heard of setting the Bluetooth type to speaker
before now. It has been discussed quite a lot in threads concerning this
issue. But, if you are like me, you don't read every single message in every
thread, and since people tend to hijack threads at times, my habit of deleting
messages based on the subject line means I too miss things from time to time.

But, you know it now and it is a great feature when it works. Sadly,
sometimes, it doesn't work. I'd say at least 90% of the time it works as
intended.

Enjoy,

There's a number on the app site that I've tried out. I couldnt get
the 'cuckoo watch' app to work for me but westminster chimes, hourly,
hourly chimes and others work just fine on my SE2020 using latest
IOS. I plumped for the app simply called 'hourly'.

Doesn't cost anything to download and try out the free apps, you can
always delete them if you don't like them.
