RE: [New post] Apple releases free 'Podcasts' app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Yes, it does. It's got the same features that were present when the podcasts section was included in the music app. Similar to the audiobooks section as well. You've got to be playing the actual file to be able to click on button to access the additional playback speed features. I don't use this app and didn't use the podcastign or audiobook feature so can't recall where you're exactly supposed to click, but it is there. Maybe artwork or something. That said, the playback speed options are so limiting and really not all that, that you're not missing much if you do in fact want to speed up the rate of playback. You'd be better off with one of the more feature rich podcasting apps like Downcast or iCatcher if this were the case. The Apple podcast app is fine and completely accessible, but is pretty basic. Re: Speeding up playback: was [New post] Apple releases free 'Podcasts' app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
I like the suggestion of making the speed control a picker, this would be nice. Although I find that the double tap and hold to bring up the full list of options in downcast a good way of getting to the speed you want fairly quickly. On the comparison between downcast's and iCatcher's top speed, I did do a little testing a while back to see since to me they sounded pretty much the same. At the time I started the same podcast on both my iPad and iPhone, one in each app and found that they stayed fairly well in sync, one at 2X and the other at 3X. You might ask what prompted me to waste my time doing this :) I think at the time I was just thinking to myself that 3x on downcast didn't really sound any quicker than 2x on iCatcher and I just had to find out. Now I really might get around to seeing exactly how long it does take me to listen to an hour long show. I would tell myself to get a life if I wasn't already to busy to fit one in LOL Garth On 27/06/2012, at 3:06 PM, Cristobal wrote: I could be wrong, but Downcast feels slightly faster to me than iCatcher. I too have not done any tests to verify this, but just by ear, it sounds just a bit faster when maxed out. Perhaps not enough to be really considered 3 x like they supposedly say, but still. This is why I even wrote the Downcast developer requesting that they increase the playback rate since I too use it for audiobook playback and any other spoken word audio material. Although, if they were to do that, I would imagine that they'd have to change the current button set up for changing the speed to a picker action where one can adjust the playback speed since it can be adjusted by quarter increments and already that can get somewhat tedious. Getting back to the Apple podcast app though, accessible though it may be, their fastest speed just doesn't cut it for heavy usage. I am going to play around with their podcast search feature since I don't find Downcast's search feature as robust as it could be. Now, if the rumored NLS app were to come out and it have the playback speed option as the digital players, I'd be all over that like ugly on an ape. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Garth Humphreys Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 8:42 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Speeding up playback: was [New post] Apple releases free 'Podcasts' app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch I also love to speed up the playback of podcasts and audio books. The app speed up player pro is the fastest that I know of. The one thing that annoys me is the way various apps label the playback speed. Let me explain, Downcast's fastest speed is labelled as 3X and iCatcher's fastest speed is labelled as 2X. Actually if you put both of these devices at their fastest speed, they playback audio at the same rate. I haven't checked exactly how long it takes to playback an hours content on both apps to see which is the correct label but I believe that iCatcher is correct in naming the speed 2X. I know that I can't listen to a 1 hour show in Downcast in only 20 minutes. It probably stems from the fact that Apples own apps incorrectly label the fastest speed they do as 2X. Hi, There's a button in the playback controls once you start playing a podcast. One button cycles through half speed, normal, 1.5 and 2x speeds. As far as show notes, I also agree that's something that needs to be added, since from what I can remember, you can view them in iTunes? Let me explain, Downcast's fastest speed is labelled as 3X and iCatcher's fastest speed is labelled as 2X. Actually if you put both of these devices at their fastest

WOUld someone be so kind as to tell me where this can be found? The one thing I gather the APple Podcast app does not have is a way to display the show notes etc. That is something I do like and hope they would add. If not I think this would really not put the Podcast app in the running with those already available. On Jun 27, 2012, at 6:37 AM, Garth Humphreys wrote: I like the suggestion of making the speed control a picker, this would be nice. The new podcast app is definitely accessible, and the interface will remind you a lot of the ibooks store interface in some ways, at least. Once you're into the catalog, this becomes apparent. If you go into the top stations tab instead of the podcasts catalog, the interface is accessible but not as streamlined as one might want imho. RE: [New post] Apple releases free 'Podcasts' app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Yes, it does. Similar to how it was when the podcasts were included in the all inclusive music app. It's basically the same thing, but just a stand alone app. It only allows for normal, fast and slow speeds and their version of fast still feels like quicksand. It's fine and all that Apples' separated this section from the music app, but in my opinion, Downcast and iCatcher still offer a bit more as far as what one can do. Especially downcast with its ability to play files at 3 times the normal speed. I use it to listen to not only podcasts, but other audible material as well for this same 3 x playback reason. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Jim Fettgather Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 1:35 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: [New post] Apple releases free 'Podcasts' app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch This app does not appear to have a way to adjust the speed at which the podcasts play. What do you find redundant and stupid? The fact you can play the content at 1.5 or double the speed? Does this affect the consumption of the information? I have to assume the playback speed is the same as the Music app. I do wish Apple would allow 3X which would really move things along. Re: [New post] Apple releases free 'Podcasts' app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
I see where you're coming from, but I still like this feature and agree with others that I wish it could be speeded up even more. I don't want to speed up everything I listen to (music for example), but there are definitely things, including podcasts, where I do want to speed up the playback and I don't feel my comprehension of the material is negatively impacted at all. I can even thing of some podcasts where I'll want to speed up the play back a bit to move through a section I'm not as interested in and then slow it down to pay more attention to another more interesting section. I don't see how this is redundant though, and I don't think a feature you're not interested in makes it's stupid. I would never speed up any music I was listening to, but I wouldn't say that it was stupid for someone else to do that or want to do that. I just wouldn't comment on it, since it isn't a feature I'm interested in. RE: [New post] Apple releases free 'Podcasts' app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Different strokes for different folks I suppose. I find the regular speed to be mind numbingly slow and boring. Even Apple's version of fast playback for their podcasts and audiobooks is still slow to my ears. This is why I'm probably still going to stick with Downcast since they offer the fastest playback speed at 3 x. I've even written the Downcast guy requesting a faster playback speed in future releases to which he said that he'd take it into consideration. Calling this feature redundant and stupid seems rather harsh and unwarrented. Besides, if one feels that they may have missed something, they can just go back to the normal playback speed or press the all powerful rewind button. I listen to as many podcasts of tv shows as I can so I can bang them out in a faster time and actually prefer to listen to them this way because I can speed them up as opposed to having to listen to it at normal speed on the tv. Kind of like DVR on crack without the video. Really quite convenient. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Daniel Miller Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 4:35 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: [New post] Apple releases free 'Podcasts' app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch Yes, I find the fact that you can speed up podcasts up to be redundant, since they're spoken word content, which in my view speeding that up hinders consumption of the information. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Scott Howell Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 6:31 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: [New post] Apple releases free 'Podcasts' app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch What do you find redundant and stupid? Ah I understand. Of course calling it redundant truly makes no sense at all. Speeding something up is not redundant by definition. In your view it may be stupid although still not sure how. You might not like consuming your content beyond the speed at which it was initially recorded and that is fine, but stupid? No I can't see how that is stupid or hinders consumption/understanding. Like I said, I wish APple would allow for increasing the speed up to 3X which means I can consume more information in less time. I agree with your comments below. Additionally, I also use the Downcast app to listen to audio books in addition to podcasts. However just because I may not like a new app or a new app doesn't have a feature I want or like, I won't call it stupid, or anything like that. -- Raul A. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Speeding up playback: was [New post] Apple releases free 'Podcasts' app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
I also love to speed up the playback of podcasts and audio books. As I said Speed Up Player Pro is the fastest I have come across. It's fastest is 2.5X and I believe that like iCatcher they have correctly labelled the speed control. RE: Speeding up playback: was [New post] Apple releases free 'Podcasts' app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
I could be wrong, but Downcast feels slightly faster to me than iCatcher.
