I agree. As I said, I personally think I'm covered under the fare use
act, and even though I've seen lawyers from record companies say they
don't think the fair use act covers DRM protected materials, I doubt a
recording company would go after someone who was just making copies for
their own personal use.

Note that copying protected information, even for personal use, isn't
necessarily perfectly fine. There are still licenses that you agreed to
when you signed up for a service that provided the material, and not
every legal expert agrees that the fair use law in the US covers digital
material when it comes to making copies of digitally protected material,
even for your own personal use.

Note that I think the fair use laws do cover this, and I have no problem
copying materials for my own personal use. I just want to make the point
that this issue has not clearly been settled in US courts, so when
someone says it's perfectly fine, remember there still some grey area
here, and if it concerns you, you may want to do your own research into
this issue.

Anyone who wants to use Voice Dream Reader's better voices for their Kindle

Noting that for personal use, this is completely fine, but please do not share

Kindle books are DRM protected so Voice Dream Reader can't read them in
their native format. You would need to convert them to an ePub or other
format Voice Dream can read using a tool such as Codex found here:

There are probably others, but the two that come to mind are Read2Go
(note how it is written) for $20 and Voice Dream Reader for $10. Voice
Dream offers many more features, such as reading/reviewing other
document types, and the Read2Go app is strictly BookShare books. I
don't know about Voice Dream for getting BookShare content but I've
heard that it is easy. As for Read2Go, it is easy to search and
download books from BookShare. Note that in the Read2Go app, books are
read using a TTS voice. Both apps work with Braille displays.

Eloquence is an old, but favored among the blind, synthesizer that was last
updated a good decade or so ago, but as long as there is still a need, it'll
still be there I suppose. Many more natural voices are avalable in the iOS
version, including most of the voices made free in iOS, like the default
American English female that iPhones have made so popular. Unfortunately, Alex
hasn't been made avalable yet, which is most likely a business move for the
Voce Dream developer, as Alex can be used on Voice Dream Writer just fine. Ah
well, we have the Speak Screen feature for that, which is almost a substitute
for reading apps altogether, if all you need is stuff read to you.

Oh, I wasn’t making a plug for the android version. I was just wondering that
if Voice Dream for Android has the Eloquince! voices than maybe there was a
chance of getting them on iOS. Since it was a jaws thing than I guess it
probably won’t make it to iOS. I have never used jaws. When I needed a screen

I am very unfamiliar with voices and their brands so I don’t know what
Eloquince! voices are. My brother tried the android version of voice Dream
Reader and we had some different voice options from each other. He has Ava but
I don’t know if she’s an Eloquince! voice.

Re: Best app to read Bookshare books

2016-01-19 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Eloquence isn't a JAWS or a Freedom Scientific thing. Nuance currently
has the rights to Eloquence. Freedom Scientific does use Eloquence as
the default text to speech engine for JAWS. Code Factory makes a package
available for Android, so you can get Eloquence on that platform. It's
also available for Linux.

When I needed a screen reader I started with voice Over.

At the bottom of the home screen on the voice dream app are four buttons.
If you press the first button, a screen pops up and at the end of the short
list is Bookshare books. Select this option and it brings up a search box
where you type in the title or the author of the book. The next step is to
download the Bookshare book.

Before doing this, you should go to the fourth button on the bottom of the
home screen. This is where you go to enter in your Bookshare account
information. Once this information has been entered, you are then linked to
your Bookshare account and you can find books by going to the first button
at the bottom of the home screen as I mentioned above.

I am not aware of a sleep timer on the Voice a Dream app. You could email
support for this app and inquire if there is such an option.

Occasionally voice dream reader has been on sale. I do not remember exactly
when I purchased this app, but I do recall that it was on sale at the time.

At the bottom of the home screen on the voice dream app are four
buttons. If you press the first button, a screen pops up and at the
end of the short list is Bookshare books. Select this option and it
brings up a search box where you type in the title or the author of
the book. The next step is to download the Bookshare book.

Before doing this, you should go to the fourth button on the bottom of
the home screen. This is where you go to enter in your Bookshare
account information. Once this information has been entered, you are
then linked to your Bookshare account and you can find books by going
to the first button at the bottom of the home screen as I mentioned
above.

I am not aware of a sleep timer on the Voice a Dream app. You could
email support for this app and inquire if there is such an option.

Occasionally voice dream reader has been on sale. I do not remember
exactly when I purchased this app, but I do recall that it was on sale
at the time.

Re: Best app to read Bookshare books

2016-01-15 Thread Richard Turner

It does appear that the lite version is no longer there, but that is no great
loss as it was pretty useless anyway. It was extremely limited for testing if
you are a blind user. Remember, his original market was to sighted users who
wanted to be able to listen to documents or books while driving. If you look up
the story of the app, he didn't know anything about accessibility until after
he created the app and started getting questions from blind users and someone
pointed out to him the lack of access to printed material and how much
potential his app had for people who are dislexic.
Once he found out how helpful the app is to blind and visually impaired, he put
his focus there and has made tons of major improvements for VoiceOver users and
for dislexics.
He also created a great note taking app called Voice Dream Writer.
If you are wanting to listen to BookShare books, it is the best app by far for
doing that.
You may want to buy other voices than the default Heather, and they can be from
$1.99 to $4.99 each depending on manufacturer and quality.
But, it is my most used app and thanks to someone on this list, I can now
convert my Kindle books so I can listen to them with Amy in Voice Dream.

Re: Best app to read Bookshare books

2016-01-15 Thread MamaPeach
Wasn't there, at one time, a lite version of this app so you could test it
out? I am not finding it in the app store now. I don't want to spend $9.99
if I don't know if I am going to like it or not.

If you want to ask questions about it off line, feel free to contact me.

If you go into the screen for the fourth button on the button row of the
home screen, there are a number of advanced settings that you can select.
This is also where you find the voice options. The basic app comes with
two voice options: IOS English and Heather. Mine was initially set to IOS
English, but I perfer the Heather voice which I think is the same voice you
get if you select the Audio Download option on Bookshare rather than the
more computer sounding text option for the book download.
One thing that is very nice about this app is that it is very easy to
purchase a new voice by going into the Manage my Voices setting and
selecting from the voice options.
You can listen to samples of these voices here as well. Regards, Michelle

At the bottom of the home screen on the voice dream app are four buttons. If you press the first button, a screen pops up and at the end of the short list is Bookshare books. Select this option and it brings up a search box where you type in the title or the author of the book. The next step is to download the Bookshare book.

Before doing this, you should go to the fourth button on the bottom of the home screen. This is where you go to enter in your Bookshare account information. Once this information has been entered, you are then linked to your Bookshare account and you can find books by going to the first button at the bottom of the home screen as I mentioned above.

I am not aware of a sleep timer on the Voice a Dream app. You could email support for this app and inquire if there is such an option.

Occasionally voice dream reader has been on sale. I do not remember exactly when I purchased this app, but I do recall that it was on sale at the time.

I sure wish they could get support for Eloquince! I know it will never
happen, but it would be so awesome if they did. Now I can kind of do
that in a round about way by creating mp3 files of Eloquince on
Windows and then importing through Dropbox, but it would be awesome to
have native support.

You don’t get a choice in Voice Dream. It does DAISY Text.

If you want to download the mp3 version and listen to their not so wonderful
speech, you could do that with a computer and maybe be able to use the mp3
files, but the quality of the voices in Voice Dream are much better and it is
much easier to adjust reading speed, etc.

At the bottom of the home screen on the voice dream app are four buttons. If
you press the first button, a screen pops up and at the end of the short list
is Bookshare books. Select this option and it brings up a search box where you
type in the title or the author of the book. The next step is to download the
Bookshare book.

Before doing this, you should go to the fourth button on the bottom of the home
screen. This is where you go to enter in your Bookshare account information.
Once this information has been entered, you are then linked to your Bookshare
account and you can find books by going to the first button at the bottom of
the home screen as I mentioned above.

I am not aware of a sleep timer on the Voice a Dream app. You could email
support for this app and inquire if there is such an option.

Occasionally voice dream reader has been on sale. I do not remember exactly
when I purchased this app, but I do recall that it was on sale at the time.

It does appear that the lite version is no longer there, but that is no
great loss as it was pretty useless anyway. It was extremely limited for
testing if you are a blind user. Remember, his original market was to sighted
users who wanted to be able to listen to documents or books while driving. If
you look up the story of the app, he didn't know anything about accessibility
until after he created the app and started getting questions from blind users
and someone pointed out to him the lack of access to printed material and how
much potential his app had for people who are dislexic.

Once he found out how helpful the app is to blind and visually impaired, he
put his focus there and has made tons of major improvements for VoiceOver users
and for dislexics.

He also created a great note taking app called Voice Dream Writer.

If you are wanting to listen to BookShare books, it is the best app by far
for doing that.

You may want to buy other voices than the default Heather, and they can be
from $1.99 to $4.99 each depending on manufacturer and quality.

But, it is my most used app and thanks to someone on this list, I can now
convert my Kindle books so I can listen to them with Amy in Voice Dream.

Hi,
You do not get a choice. It uses DAISY Text.
It handles all the unzipping of the book automatically so you are presented
with a clean reading format that takes very little time to download.

Hi!
Voice Dream Reader has a sleep timer and it's the best app I ever
used. It covers text documents and audio files in various formats
and both Daisy audio and Text plus Bookshare and Guttenberg project.
It supports cloud services (Dropbox, Google Drive and iCloud Drive).
It remembers position, language, voice and voice settings for each
book. You can add highlighted and common bookmarks
I really don't know what to say further, I could write throughout
the evening xD.

Best app to read Bookshare books

2016-01-14 Thread Michelle Bernstein

Regards, Michelle Bernstein

Kindle books are DRM protected so Voice Dream Reader can't read them in
their native format. You would need to convert them to an ePub or other
format Voice Dream can read using a tool such as Codex found here:

Best app to read Bookshare books

2016-01-14 Thread Pinky
Hi Group,

I just join Bookshare and would like to know what is a very easy to use app
to read books on bookshare. I have a couple of request of the app.

1.Easy to use

2. would like a sleep timer.

3. Easy to get the book in the app?

Any other suggestion would be appreciated.
