Blocking a number that's not in your contacts

2014-01-30 Thread Andrew Lamanche

Hi Listers,

Is there a way of blocking a number that you don't first wish to add to
your contacts? I know I can block a number that's already in my contacts
list but what about if you get an advertising call, and you obviously
don't wish to have their number in your contacts but you want to block
it? Is there a way to accomplish it? Or is there a way of manually
entering a number somewhere to be blocked?

Many thanks

Andrew

Why not create a contact called blocked and then add that number to that
contact. In future you can add other numbers to this same contact.

On this same topic I would like to know if there is a way to block unknown
numbers.

If we can't look at ourselves, and ask, why? then where does the learning

2014-01-30 Thread Chris H
No there is a blocked feature in iOS 7. So what you do is go to the
recents tab in the phone app, double tap more info next to the number,
then double tap the block contact button. From then on they can't call,
message or FaceTime call you.

I just checked this out and it is possible. Go to your recent call list.
Each number is listed twice. The second of each pair is for More Info. One
of the choices is Block this Caller. When you choose that it gives you the
choice of Block this Contact or Cancel. I chose Block this contact even
though the number was not in my contacts. When I went back to the More Info
for the blocked number in the Recent call list, one of the choices is now
Unblock this Caller.
The blocked number is not in my contact list. I am not sure how to find it
later if I wanted to unblock it. But since the number I used as a test is
American Express according to Google I don't want it unblocked anyway.

If a number is unknown, unfortunately, you cannot block it; it is not
necessary to create a contact to block a number either.
Just go to recents and doubletap the more information button and the option
to block that number appears.

UnBlocking a number that's not in your contacts - Was: Blocking a number that's not in your contacts

2014-01-30 Thread Bill Gallik
Of course, the colliery to the initial question is: if you can block a
number that isn't in your Contacts, then how could you unblock if you have a
change of heart and wish to permit that number to call.

I imagine that if the caller using that number were to leave a voice mail
you could recover the number in that fashion. After all, the Block Caller
doesn't truly prevent the call from getting to your service, only routes it
directly to voice mail where it will be listed in the Blocked Callers
list.

But if the number never leaves a voice mail, then what?

Blocking Yourself - Was: Blocking a number that's not in your contacts

2014-01-30 Thread Bill Gallik
OK, here's a slightly unusual twist: is it possible to block a number so
that you cannot call it while keeping it in your Contacts? Just suppose
there's this person that you are not to contact, but if they should call you
you want to know so you don't answer.

Hi, just a slight correction. They can still call, but your iPhone will
ignore the call and send them directly to voice mail. The call will
still appear in your usage section of your bill. For true blocking, you
will have to get your cell phone provider involved at a cost I'm sure.

Subject: Blocking a number that's not in your contacts

 Many thanks

RE: Blocking a number that's not in your contacts

But why go through the trouble of creating a contact, assigning a silent
ringtone and adding numbers to it when you can simply double tap on the More

double tap on Block?

Why not create a contact called blocked and then add that number to that
contact. In future you can add other numbers to this same contact.

On this same topic I would like to know if there is a way to block unknown
numbers.

If we can't look at ourselves, and ask, why? then where does the learning
start?

Re: Blocking a number that's not in your contacts

2014-01-30 Thread Robert Doc Wright
Unfortunately, I did not see that option when the call is listed as unknown
and there is no number.

If we can't look at ourselves, and ask, why? then where does the learning
start?

HTH,
Sherrie Gosling

Subject: Blocking a number that's not in your contacts

Many thanks

Andrew
