RE: Braille Displays For iPhone
The 20 cell display that I am using is the pac mate 20 from Freedom Scientific. It is portable, but doesn't use Bluetooth so it is only usable on the pac mate notetaker or it has to be plugged into a laptop with Bluetooth 2.0 and above. My 40 cell unit is a focus 40 blue and it does have IPhone interfacing capability but I find it kind of big for just reading emails or checking text messaging. I think the only true 20 cell display that works with the iDevices is the Braillino from Handitech. I'm not sure I'd recommend it, b but the good thing is that it uses off-the-shelf double a batteries and has some basic functions built-in. I'm very curious to see the new Perkins Mini which is 16 cells and works with iOS 6. The only somewhat fix, though this is more trouble than it's worth for someone like me who inputs braille quickly, is to toggle between contracted and uncontracted braille with space and G. Meaning, you'll have to type everything in grade 1 braille, which may help some slower typers more since they then don't have to keep correcting translation errors. I had a student awhile back who started doing this until he was a faster braille typer. Actually, Apple uses a time-sensitive grade II braille buffer which only allows approximately half a second. What this means is, if you hesitate for a half second, the grade II translator converts the buffer and enters the data. If you set braille to 8 dot computer braille, the buffer will deactivate and this translation aspect stops. In other words, if there is no text in the grade II buffer, you can braille as slowly as you wish. Hi, All refreshable braille displays have 8 dots. They are numbered down the left side of the cell, 1,2,3,7 and the right side, 4,5,6,8. Dots 7 and 8 are used in standard braille as the cursor indicator. In computer braille, dot 7 is used for capital letters in place of the dot 6, so a capital letter only takes one cell, so a capital A for example, would be dots 1 and 7. The at sign is normally dots 7 and 4 if you have 8 dot braille turned on. Those are just a couple examples. The National Braille Press has a nice little booklet called Computer Braille Made Easy that is very good if you want to truly learn computer braille. Also, there is an app for $0.99 called Braille Reference that has a list of computer braille symbols. 8 dot computer braille has enough dots to create a braille symbol for every ASCII value. Therefore, it is not relational like grade I or II braille. When I say relational, I mean some dot configurations meanings are only understood when the entire word is considered. For example: the capital letter symbol, dot 6, is not used as such in computer braille. Instead, dot 7, added to a letter, indicates the uppercase form of that letter. Dot 6 is the comma in computer braille. Probably the best example would be numbers. In computer braille, all numbers are the lower equivalents of their letter counterparts. So, dot 2 is the number 1, dots 2 3 is 2, dots 2 5 is 3, dots 2 5 6 is 4, Etc. I like computer braille because there is no ambiguity and no room for error in translation symbology. Hi. I have tried some of these small displays, in my opinion they are not much worth. Yes you can use them for writing, but if you are reading only a little mails or longer messages and using safari, the smaller displays will not do it. On the other hand I am also wondering if 40 cells displays are to long. I have better results with something like 32 cells, 24 will probaly do it, I do not know, but I wish there could be done some experiments to figure out if there are any preferable lengths of braille displays. If 40 cells displays is not doing better than e.g. 24 or 32 cells why spend money on the longer displays. Best regards Annie. When choose something longer than a 12 or 14 cells display. There are some smaller problems with humanwares 32 cells display, but it provide great braille to a fair price, it can be placed in its bag without falling out, so you can easili use it in a train or a bus.. I disagree: I have a focus40, which I use at work. I set it to use 14 cells, accept for when I am reading code. For books and the web and everything else, I prefer to read with less cells. I imagine this is personal preference too. Also, it would depend on how hard you had to work or how much it interrupted your flow to keep moving through the book. On one end would be something like my braillelite 40 which I can set to scroll autoatically and then adjust the scrolling speed (braillelite doesn't work on iPhone though) and the other extreme would be something that forced you to really go out of your reading pattern to go on to the next group of cells. The Focus 14 is less money. I'm wondering the same thing. I'm used to a 40-cell braillelite 40 which is still plugging away but unfortunately won't work with anything on the Mac except Terminal. I see the low prices of some of these 12, 14, 18 and even 20-cell displays and wonder if I wouldn't be frustrated. I also see the trend toward everything being dependent on the computer or smart device instead of being able to use it as a stand-alone also and while I see the benefits I wonder if I will be happy with something that forces me to always have to have two devices of some kind together. Yet it's not like I can really picture me affording a stand-alone unit with maybe an sd card slot so I'm not limited by the braille device's storage. so I'm trying to reconcile myself to being glad to buy a device that will work with phone and computer. I think I can do that but I'm not sure I can convince myself that a device with so few cells, even at an almost affordable cost, will be worth it. I read a lot of books on my IPod, so I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to use something like a 12-cell display. I have a preference for Braille books over audio. I can definitely understand a use for a small display with Idevices, (portability, reading with light email and web browsing, and writing practice with Braille beginners) but personally, this wouldn't be my choice. I haven't actually checked out the small ones, so I can't evaluate them yet. If I get a chance, I may do so one of these days. I use my Focus 40 Blue with both my Mac and IPod, and I switch back and forth constantly by either locking the screen on my Ipod, or unloading VO on my Mac. I am very satisfied with this arrangement for my own purposes. Sorry it was late. I like the look and feel of the 14. Even though the A.P.H one smaller its also bulky. The 14 is newer and it's oblong like a dollar and thinner. Other than that I'm learning how to use a braille device and always wanted portable verses a bigger device even though the larger displays gives more information from the screen at one time. That is not a glitch with the RefreshaBraille, that is the way it is with all braille displays and the iPhone. If you pause for more than about a half a second, and you are using contracted braille, the symbol you last typed will expand to its uncontracted meaning. So, if you are writing a name like Johnston, and you pause a little too long before writing the n that follows the h, you will get johavenston. The h will have back translated to have. That will happen with every braille input device used with the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. You just have to get used to it and not pause in the wrong place. I know someone who reads over 200 words per minute and is happy using the 18 cell Refreshabraille. Personally, I would prefer 40 cells, but this is all completely personal preference. I don't understand your comment about this glitch if you don't input real fast. Can you explain? I have been using a Refreshabraille for a while, but I have not seen any issues with the display if I do not input fast enough. I think a lot of it will come down to two factors as I see it. First how much panning bothers you. I have an 18 cell display and I think 24 would be maybe a little better and certainly 32 or 40 would be the best. However, the other factor is portability and ease of typing. THe Refreshabraille I have is 18 cells and that is probably as few cells as I could live with, but it is very portable and easy to type on. That is why I chose that display and not to mention it was the most affordable display at the time that would work with the iOS devices to my knowledge. Hi all. As someone who has used both the Focus 14 and the Refreshabraille 18, but who has my own personal preferences, here are my thoughts. I'm replying to several messages at once here btw. One of the advantages of the RB is the fact that you have 4 more cells to work with. That may not sound like a big deal to some, but when you're reading books and long emails such as the one I'm typing now, it can become a factor. It certainly was for me, a braille reader who uses braille about 95% of the time to access my iDevices. However, there are some pluses to the Focus 14. I like the keyboard slightly better, as I don't have to press so hard on the keys, the lower price is nice, and, that awful USB plug present on the Refreshabraille 18 is not an issue on the 14. I can expand on what I mean by the USB plug comment if anyone wants. And, finally, there is another option that has not been brought up here as of yet. The Perkins Mini is a 16 cells display which has basic note taking capabilities and is compatible with iOS 6. It's good for reading books and you're not dependent on a connected device for everything. The memory used is a micro SD card. However, I personally do not like the keyboard, but that could be just me. Essentially, you have the keyboard above the display, the display itself which is set at a lower hight than the display, and then spacebars on the other side of the display, meaning that they're quite a ways from the keyboard. Some people have indicated that they become used to the keyboard, but it was not comfortable for me. The price of the Perkins Mini is $1549, which is more than the Focus 14 and less than the RB 18. After reading all this, you're probably wondering my preference. I'm not sure, since my preferences don't necissarily line up with anyone elses. You have the info now, and I'm willing to answer more questions as I can, but I never feel it's right to place too much on the recommendation of another without having all the facts. If I were going for a smaller braille display such as a 24 cell, I'd choose the Essys as I have the 40, which I'd like to use with my Mac and not my I phone. One of these days, I'm going to get a 24 cell if funds permit! I had an 18 cell Braillenote many years ago and was able to read books and other long documents rapidly on it. When I switched to a 32 cell Braillnote it took some getting used to because I had all of those extra cells. I would not want to go any smaller than 18 cell for reading because you might only get one or two words on each line. I plan to purchase a Focus 40 Blue in the near future. Hi. The Perkins mini is bluetooth compatible and is a 16 cell display distributed by Perkins here in the US. I think it's also being sold under the name Seka Mini in other parts of the world. It has a built in notetaker and a few other functions, much like the Braille Edge, but it has its differences, some of which I listed in my last email. It certainly was for me, a braille reader who uses braille about 95% of the time to access my iDevices. However, there are some pluses to the Focus 14. I like the keyboard slightly better, as I don't have to press so hard on the keys, the lower price is nice, and, that awful USB plug present on the Refreshabraille 18 is not an issue on the 14. I can expand on what I mean by the USB plug comment if anyone wants. And, finally, there is another option that has not been brought up here as of yet. The Perkins Mini is a 16 cells display which has basic note taking capabilities and is compatible with iOS 6. It's good for reading books and you're not dependent on a connected device for everything. The memory used is a micro SD card. However, I personally do not like the keyboard, but that could be just me. Essentially, you have the keyboard above the display, the display itself which is set at a lower hight than the display, and then spacebars on the other side of the display, meaning that they're quite a ways from the keyboard. Some people have indicated that they become used to the keyboard, but it was not comfortable for me. The price of the Perkins Mini is $1549, which is more than the Focus 14 and less than the RB 18. After reading all this, you're probably wondering my preference. I'm not sure, since my preferences don't necissarily line up with anyone elses. You have the info now, and I'm willing to answer more questions as I can, but I never feel it's right to place too much on the recommendation of another without having all the facts. It is a glitch when using any braille display with grade 2 translation. I use a 40-cell at work and have gotten so used to the 14 now that sometimes the 40 almost seems like too much. hard to explain but it's so small and just a neat little device. goes out of it? no Focus doesn't do that. it just translates like if you type S and don't type your next character right away it wil make it so because S is the grade 2 contraction for so. If the glitch you are talking about is the fact that if you don't input Braille in grade 2 mode fast enough the entry gets back translated this is not a function of your Braille display but rather a function of the I device Braille translator. For whatever reason the powers that be at Apple who I can't imagine are blind Braille users, decided that if you wait a second or so without entering anything on your Braille display you must be done and want the entry to be back translated. I hope someday they fix this as it is a pain in the lower cell. Hi All, When come to braille displays, it is all about personal prefference i think. Either you want something that you can read more than a text, an email, or you wnt something portable that you can take with you wherever you go. If you want something portable, anything with 12 up to 20 cells is good enough. But, if you want something more, like reading a book or a long document or something, you may found that you need a 32cells or more. It comes down to what you want to do, and what you need it for, do you travel a lot, etc etc at the end of the day.
