Hand placement with Braille Touch
Hi, I ant to concur with others that the way one uses Braille Touch is not using ergonomic principles. Hence, it places at least my right hand at jeopardy in possibly developing carpal tunnel. I believe the developers should take a serious look at creating a Perkins style layout for the app. Even though I am slow in braille processing, it is essential to find a solution to this issue. I have tried all sorts of different ways to position my hands, but after a few minutes my right hand begins to fatigue and hurt in the wrist. This issue has been discussed by others on this list, so I hope the developers of the app are listening. May be this will be fixed in the near future. There must be a good reason why all of the braille note takers and braille displays are manufacturers design the products with a horizontal layout. Thanks for listening. Re: Hand placement with Braille Touch
I think the basic idea of the app is great, but the holding position has many flaws. It is hard to grip the phone, it is uncomfortable and your right hand blocks the sound of Voice Over coming from the speaker. Just my personal thoughts. Re: Hand placement with Braille Touch
Barbara, I've discovered other ways of holding it so be very experimental. My most comfortable is to hold with thumbs and little fingers on either side of the case, near to each end, and I find I can write both with screen facing me and facing away. With the pod I prefer just to use thumbs and hold more with the hand, because it's thinner. I have used both on the table but still don't like the curve action too much then. I also quite like using it on a cushion at a very slight angle. Yea, play! Find the best one for you and you may find you change from time to time. Re: Hand placement with Braille Touch
I do think that repetative strain etc may well be serious factors here but, looking at the phone and having larger hands myself, I don't think I could manage to position both hands straight across without the fingers being pretty close. I wonder if the dot positions could be, well, um, just a little less curved??? Re: Hand placement with Braille Touch
Ok, let's think about this logically. Do you ever lay down on your back, fold your hands across your chest or stomach, and interlock your fingers? I do. This is a very common way of laying on your back. It is a very natural position, and it is basically the position your hands are in when you use Braille Touch. So, what is the difference? The difference is that you are not improperly tensing your muscles. Take note of how hard you are squeezing the iPhone. Take note of how firmly you are pressing your fingers against the screen. As the developers note, if you use a case with your iPhone, you can more easily grip the phone and place your fingers properly on the display. Desiring a braille input method that is horizontal across the screen is a separate issue. The nice thing about such an input method is it is what you are use to. The problem with said input method is it cannot readily be used whilst standing, but instead requires the iPhone to be placed on a flat surface. Also, we do not know what sort of programming and testing will be required for the developers to implement such a keyboard. Anyone who feels they are developing RSI from using the app should, of course, cease using the app immediately. The iPhone has a perfectly good and useable touch screen keyboard. You can also connect any desired Bluetooth keyboard. Re: Hand placement with Braille Touch
Hello, I have to disagree. It is quite comfortable to put your hands on your own waste. With fingers vertical slightly curled and elbows out to the sides. The first braille machine was the Stainsby that required the finger formation as brailletouch. Perhaps because my Stainsby supported me through years of study. I find it far easier than having my elbows tucked in and being restricted, as with using a perkins. It's like wearing a straight jacket. While I'm typing this message on a qwerty keyboard, my elbows are pointing outwards not being tied to my sides. It's not comfortable to keep your elbows restricted. Monitor your own behaviour eating dressing and see if you can honestly repeat and make the same statements. If you think about it, a perkins is not as long as a human's shoulders, so the elbows have to point out to the side. It is really a mind over matter issue. Re: Hand placement with Braille Touch
I agree with everything David said below. Also, others on the list have described a wide variety of ways to use BrailleTouch. If the standard way of holding the phone in the User Guide does not work for you, please play around with other ways. I'll add a couple more. 1. Some people sit and put their elbows on their thighs and point their forearms up toward the ceiling. You can support the back case of your phone this way, with the screen facing the ceiling. 2. If you have a desk, you can also rest your forearms on the desk while holding the phone in the way described in the user guide. We offer the free trial so you can experiment with BrailleTouch before you consider buying it.
Hi. I have tried that. Doesn't work. At least I can't get it to work. Re: Hand placement with Braille Touch
I too, would like a choice between Perkins style, and what it is now. I understand if that can be done, or cannot be done I should say. But, if it can be a choice that would be wonderful! Perhaps something in settings?
