RE: Is IOS 10.3 available for iPhone 5?

2017-04-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Jeffrey,

I don't see why somebody who is most likely a fairly basic phone user should
upgrade. Just because they can't have 10.3 or later any more doesn't mean they
can't happily use their iPhone 5 with 10.2.1 for another year or two. Apple and
companies in general of course always make it sound like upgrading and having
the latest and greatest is the way to go, they would love it if everybody
bought a new device every year or at least every two years, but for so many
people that really isn't necessary. If somebody "chooses" to do this it is
their business, but there is no reason to do it if you are happy with how
things are. I do have a 6S Plus which is only a year and a half old, but I
certainly did not see any compelling reason to get an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus last
fall and I am not yet at all convinced I'll see much of a reason to get this
fall's new iPhone; it would definitely need to have wireless charging, much
better battery life and at least one or two other compelling reasons to
upgrade. If Apple only comes out with a large 5.8 inch modell which has all the
new features like wireless charging then I will most likely keep my 6S Plus for
another year.

Sieghard

Subject: RE: Is IOS 10.3 available for iPhone 5?

Having started this thread, I thought I should provide some closure about what
I've recommended to my clients. The explanation that the over-the-air updates
were pulled, but that iTunes updates were still available seemed to be a
bandaid solution to me, so I recommended that they consider upgrading their
phones from 5's to 7's. These are elderly people, but not hurting financially,
by any stretch of the imagination.

Their primary concerns seemed to be about needing to use the connecter into the
power jack for a patch cord while driving, but I think they'll be willing to do
this, once they get used to the idea. The husband has normal vision, and
connects his phone via blue tooth, and they don't want to mess with having a
second phone trying to talk over Blue tooth.

Sometimes it's really hard to give up technology that you love a lot, but I
think they'll be willing to move ahead.

Thanks to all on the list who provided answers to my inquiry.

Hi yes, that's right, you can update to 10.3 via iTunes, but all around the web
suggests that this will be the last ever update for 32 bit devices, as 10.3.2,
which is currently in beta, appears to be 64 bit only, suggesting the fact.

Hi folks

For those that did not get the update, try again, maybe with the small fix
10.3.1 the update will come through.

Apple has pulled back the over-the-air update to iOS 10.3 for iPhone 5 and
5c devices without giving any reason, AppleInsider reports. The update was
available for a few hours before mysteriously disappearing, despite there
being no noted outcry of users who had tried and failed to install the
update on the devices. The update can still be installed through the
standard process using iTunes, and seems to function fine on an iPhone 5c.

In a related development, The Apple Post has discovered that the beta
version of iOS 10.3.2 appears to end support for devices with 32-bit
processors — like the iPhone 5 and 5c. The beta only contains restore images
for 64-bit devices, hinting at the possibility that 32-bit devices are about
to lose support. Apple announced back in 2014 that new apps or app updates
would have to support 64-bit processors, and recent speculation has swirled
around iOS 11 ending support for 32-bit devices. A warning dialog discovered
by developers working with the iOS 10.3 beta stated that apps that have not
been updated to include 64-bit support “will not work with future versions

RE: Is IOS 10.3 available for iPhone 5?

2017-04-03 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi All,
I have a 4th generation iPad and when I go to see if there is an update it
shows I have the latest which was 10.2.1 I think if my memory serves me right.
So you are saying you can go to iTunes and still update to 10.3? So if the 4th
generation iPad does not support 64 bit then why would you still be able to
update to IOS 10.3 with iTunes?
Mr. Ed

RE: Is IOS 10.3 available for iPhone 5?

2017-04-03 Thread Jeffrey Turner

Jeffrey Turner

2017-04-03 Thread Feliciano Godoy
Apple is moving away from 32-bit technologies. It's time to upgrade if you have
an iPhone 5c or older.

They may be able to stop att an Apple Store on Sunday, so perhaps they will

I’m glad you have written proof from the Apple website that the 5 is supported.
Maybe they won’t think I’m totally bonkers.

Hi Jeffrey,

I am not sure why your clients don’t see the update, the iPhone 5 is
definitely still capable of running iOS 10, only the iPhone 4S and older
devices are no longer compatible with iOS 10.

Can you let us know if they have iOS 10 and don’t see the update to 10.3 or do
you mean they are still on iOS 9 and don’t see an option to update to iOS 10?
Make sure they indeed have an iPhone 5 because support for the 4S definitely
stopped with iOS 9. They should probably make a backup, close all apps and then
reboot the phone and try again, also make sure they are connected to Wifi.

Re: Is IOS 10.3 available for iPhone 5?

2017-04-01 Thread Russ Kiehne
>From ILounge:

Apple pulls over-the-air iOS 10.3 update for iPhone 5, 5c; iOS 10.3.2 seems to
end support for them

Apple has pulled back the over-the-air update to iOS 10.3 for iPhone 5 and 5c
devices without giving any reason,
AppleInsider
reports. The update was available for a few hours before mysteriously
disappearing, despite there being no noted outcry of users who had tried and
failed to install the update on the devices. The update can still be installed
through the standard process using iTunes, and seems to function fine on an
iPhone 5c.
In a related development,
The Apple Post
has discovered that the beta version of iOS 10.3.2 appears to end support for
devices with 32-bit processors — like the iPhone 5 and 5c. The beta only
contains restore images for 64-bit devices, hinting at the possibility that
32-bit devices are about to lose support. Apple
announced back in 2014
that new apps or app updates would have to support 64-bit processors, and
recent speculation has swirled around iOS 11 ending support for 32-bit devices.
A
warning dialog
discovered by developers working with the iOS 10.3 beta stated that apps that
have not been updated to include 64-bit support “will not work with future
versions of iOS.” Given the new findings in the iOS 10.3.2 beta, the change
could come sooner than expected. If so, the 4th generation iPad would also be
unsupported as it features a 32-bit processor.

RE: Is IOS 10.3 available for iPhone 5?

2017-04-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Shai,

Thanks for the tip, I just Googled "iOS 10.3. on the iPhone 5" and found a
number of references indicating that the iPhone 5/5C may be left in the cold
soon despite the fact that Apple states in general that iOS 10 is compatible
with the iPhone 5. It is of course the last phone with a 32 bit processor that
is supported since starting with the 5S the processors were all 64 Bit. I hen
found the following article from AppleInsider.com which states that the 10.3
over the air update briefly showed up on the iPhone 5 on March 29 when it was
released, but Apple quickly pulled it without specifying a reason. This would
of course explain why iPhone 5 users who didn't upgrade immediately don't see
the update now. The article does, however, also state that you can still update
your iPhone 5 and I assume 5C to iOS 10.3 via iTunes, here is the link:

http://appleinsider.com/articles/17/03/29/over-the-air-ios-103-update-for-iphone-5-5c-pulled-by-apple-for-reasons-unknown

covered.

They may be able to stop att an Apple Store on Sunday, so perhaps they will
have an anser for us.

I’m glad you have written proof from the Apple website that the 5 is supported.
Maybe they won’t think I’m totally bonkers.

Thanks,

Jeffrey

Feliciano, if you don’t believe me that the iPhone 5 can have iOS 10, here is
a list of supported devices copied directly from Apple’s website:

iOS 10 is compatible with these devices.

iPhone

iPhone7/7 Plus

iPhone 6s/6s Plus

iPhone 6/6 Plus

iPhone SE

iPhone 5s

iPhone 5c

iPhone 5

iPad

iPad Pro 12.9-inch

iPad Pro 9.7-inch

iPad Air 2

iPad Air

iPad 4th generation

iPad mini 4

iPad mini 3

iPad mini 2

iPod

iPod touch 6th generation

Best regards,

Sieghard
