Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Mária Orovčíková

Hi again,
it might sound silly, but although I have been Iphone user for quite a
while I still don't know how to use the rotor. I know how to do the
gesture I just cannot get it working. When I try the gesture I always
open an application. I use the rotor the way that I kind of flick with
both hands the opposite ways. It is not very practical. I know it is
doable using one hand only.
Please could you try and explain what I might have been doing wrong and
how to get it working using one-hand gesture?

I hope my question does make sense.
Thank you for your help.
With regards
Maria

Re: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Rob Harris
Ok, you have to imagine this like the old radio dials, the tuning dial for
example. You'd hold it between finger and thumb, and twist it.
So you try to do this on the screen, hold your fingers a bit apart like
you're holding one of those twist knobs, put finger and thumb on the
screen, then twist, you might have to take fingers off and put them on to
twist it some more, but it will take you through all the options. You can
twist either way, it will go right round back to the beginning eventually.
Knowing what you're on can offer a short cut, though they seem to appear in
a more random order than they used to; not a good feature.

Re: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Carol Pearson
What you want to achieve is the sort of movement that you have if you turn the
knob on the radio so imagine that you want to turn on a radio, not one of the
switch sliders but one of those that the volume knob turns around, with your
thumb and finger on one hand. if you can't actually turn your thumb and finger
and get it to work, try putting your thumb and finger in the position that you
think they should be, then gently turn your other hand with a wrist movement as
you hold the phone in it and see if that works for you. this also achieves the
same thing.

I hope this helps.

2012-11-05 Thread Teresa Cochran
Also, you can go into the VO settings and practice the gesture without changing
any settings. This may enable you to practice with a little more confidence and
be less tentative, if that's part of the problem.

Yeah, I have a friend who can't do the rotor gesture. She has tried and tried
until she has dreams (actually I think she said nightmares) where she is trying
to do the rotor so I finally told her to put it on the back burner for a while
because it is driving her crazy. She has read the description in the iPhone

can't seem to do it.

Showing physically isn't that easy either when a person can't see. You can't
exactly do it easily while somebody is touching your hand or force their hand
through it, or at least i can't. Besides, a lot of us don't necessarily live
where we have another blind person around to show us and from what I understand
the gestures sighted people use are somewhat different. At least, none of my

Cheryl, I completely agree, I would find it very difficult to demonstrate it to

Re: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Søren Jensen
I have trained lots of blind, visually and fully sighted people how to use
Voiceover on an iPhone and iPad, and I have a huge success on showing people
how to turn the rotor.
If people don't understand my explanation, I usually take their hand, carefully
place their fingers on the screen and turn the device slowly so they can feel
what it feels like. Then I hold the device with one hand so they can't move it,
and them I take their hand again, and slowly turn their hand so they get a more
natural feel on how to do it.
People use that jesture differently, and the trick is to figure out what works
best for them. You can use whatever fingers you want. The device don't care. :)
Just make sure you're only using two fingers.

hands the opposite ways. It is not very practical. I know it is doable
 using one hand only.
Please could you try and explain what I might have been doing wrong and
how to get it working using one-hand gesture?
I hope my question does make sense.
 Thank you for your help.

Re: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The key is that you need to have two fingers on the screen moving in
opposite directions. Try placing the iPhone on a flat surface, so you
can use both hands if you want, now place two fingers on the screen, one
near the left edge and another near the right edge, about an inch apart.
Now move those fingers in the opposite direction, one from left to right
and the other from right to left. This should give you the roter
gesture. This may be a bit cumbersome to do all of the time, but once
you have it working once, you'll be able to practice it until you get
comfortable using some simpler methods.

RE: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
I use the rotor the way most people do.

I Have just tried this new approach to see if itw would work, and it does 2 out
of 3 trials, without much practice, at least for me.

I hold the phone in my left hand with my left thumb over the screen, at about
the 9 o'clock position, and my right finger over the screen at about the one
o'clock position.

I touch the screen simultaneously with my left thumb (1 o'clock) and right
index finger (1 o'clock) and gently move my right index finger down, from the 1
c'clock position towards the 5 o clock position.

For me, the rotor activates and changes 2 out of 3 tries without ever having
tried this before.

It may help. Worth a try, any way.

Best, Keith

Re: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Rob Harris
I don't think i'd have trouble demonstrating as such, though this is going
to depend mostly on the comprehension of the trainee.

But you do the gesture on the back of their hand, while it is more or less
in situ with the iDevice, then they try and emulate what they feel you do.
You could step them through quite a lot as you do a gesture relative to what
was heard from VO and the trainee mirrors what you did;and then you get
to pause and see if they make the right gesture and reproduce again as
necessary and so on. Getting into the right angle to use right hand on
right hand for example could be a bit tricky, but this method sounds as
plausible as any.
Trainer would need a light touch so as to not hamper the trainees movements,
but we tend to have a knack of following the movements of a guide lightly
so they're not sure you're still there.

Cheryl, I completely agree, I would find it very difficult to demonstrate it
to someone. I’ve always described it to people as like turning a knob with
two fingers.

Showing physically isn't that easy either when a person can't see. You
can't exactly do it easily while somebody is touching your hand or force
their hand through it, or at least i can't. Besides, a lot of us don't
necessarily live where we have another blind person around to show us and
from what I understand the gestures sighted people use are somewhat
different. At least, none of my sighted friends can do their gestures with
vo on.

Re: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Timothy Emmons
Hey guys, when I taught my last iPhone class, I taught the rotar this way and
it worked great. The student was able to pick it up quite well, lightly using
the back of the hand as my surface I showed them how to turn the rotar and what
to do and it worked perfectly, this also works for gestures, and tapping as
well. Hope this helps. Thanks.

2012-11-05 Thread reggie.alvar...@gmail.com
Simple way to do the rotor. I put two fingers with a space between them on the
screen. Then I turn the iPhone under my two fingers. After a while doing it
this way, I began feeling the movement and now I can do a little of the
movement with the phone still. I still need to move the phone, but I understand
the gesture.

2012-11-05 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Both the two-handed and two-finger-turn-phone methods sound like they might be
something my friend can do to give her a feel for how to do the rotor. I'm
going to try these with her.
