Dear Chermeen & List: Call Apple Accessibility Desk +1 877-304-3930. There may be a way of having an alternate view of your face recorded for Identification' Brian K. Lingard + + + + ++ + Sent: Tuesday, August 6, 2019 11:10 AM To: VIPhone Subject: Questions about face ID Hello all your knowledgeable people, So, for work, I've been given an iPhone X. As you know, the only ways to unlock the phone are through a passcode (which I find obnoxious at the best of times) or Face ID, which I frankly felt was apple's way of solving a problem that most people didn't find existed, but that's of little consequence given that I have to use this phone now. You get what you get and you don't get upset and all that sort of thing. That said, I struggled tremendously to even set up face ID. I did my best to follow the verbal instructions, but somehow never managed to tilt my head just so or follow the arrow that was supposed to tell me what to do. I ended up selecting an "accessibility" button that seemed to mean that it didn't need to get my face from as many angles as it might have from a sighted person, but then I also find that I need to be holding my phone just so in order for it to recognize my face. For example, I know I can't be the only person who sleeps with her phone next to the pillow at night. Upon waking up, before even acknowledging my consciousness, my hand is drifting up to my phone to either check the time or to check e-mail or get my next digital dopamine hit, and my phone is certainly not up above my face. How are those you using face ID managing this? do you just sit up all alert and bright-eyed before using your phone? can face ID be anything other than irritating? Is it possible to have your phone next to your pillow, turn your face towards it, and have it unlocked? I even thought of getting a sighted person to help me set it up in the detailed way it wants, but is that even possible? will it not then just start scanning the sighted person's face? oh my. Re: Questions about face ID
While we're talking Face ID, I have an additional question. I will be upgrading in about a month to a 10 series phone, or whatever the newest is, and have been wondering about something. I sleep with a CPAP machine for help breathing over night. I don't think the phone could recognize my face when wearing the full mask the machine requires, which I am fine with. What I was wondering is how does it do with facial hair? I shave a couple of times per week, and depending on the day, can be clean shaven or have a more or less full beard and mustache. Would Face ID be fooled by my beard and mustache if they were not there when I first scanned my face? I am comfortable with using Braille Screen Input, so writing the pass code in is not a huge issue. This may be something others want to consider as well, depending on how much Braille you know. Re: Questions about face ID
You know, I hadn't thought of instances like riding a bike or wearing gloves, so I'll concede that point haha. I also didn't know that it actually gets better over time, and that it somehow tracks attempts that have been confirmed through a password. I do have it lying flat on my bed next to me when it charges, and do not have "must pay attention" enabled, as I thought it'd be an easier unlock if I wasn't required to make eye contact with the screen. I'm heartened that it's been working out for you, though. This gives me hope. Note that if you fail to unlock the phone enough times, it will require the passcode. I mention that, because being too close to the sleeping face might result in a lot of inadvertent unlock attempts. Some experimentation is probably necessary. Also, the face recognition gets better over time (viz, it will fail, you will use the passcode, it will learn that particular angle is OK)..I find some sunglasses work well, others not at all and some only after several manual unlock cycles. No doubt it's a combination of how opaque (perhaps polarization?) and shape. I've come to prefer it. -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Questions about face ID
Hello all you knowledgeable people, So for work, I've been given an iPhone X. Is it possible to have your phone next to your pillow, turn your face towards it, and have it unlock? I even thought of getting a sighted person to help me set it up in the detailed way it wants, but is that even possible? will it not then just start scanning the sighted person's face? oh my. Thanks in advance, and I am missing the fingerprint option so much, if you couldn't tell. Shermeen -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list.
