Re: External Battery choice
Steve, you stated that there is enough charge from this device to charge the iPhone three times? What does that mean? Does it mean you get three times the normal talk time? I saw something in the description that referred to 27 hours of talk time and wonder if that is what you referred to? I've ordered this device today from Amazon. I believe I ordered the one with the talking feature, as on Amazon's site, it was stated that this device has been available since August of 2012. Thanks. Alan, if you don't necessarily want a case with an on board charger, you might want to consider an external charger like the Incredicharge. I can charge my phone for several times on a single charge. I can also use my phone while it's charging on the Incredicharge. It has two USB connections as well as a built-in micro USB cable so I can also charge my Booksense Standard, my Aftershokz headphones or my Sansa Clip zip and still be using the phone while all three are charging on the same charger. I got it at Amazon for about $27 and free shipping. It's not the most accessible, at least not for me because the LEDs used to indicate charging status are very small. Still, I liked the idea of having something that would charge multiple devices at once or my phone for more than one time. Re: External Battery choice
The cable with a micro USB connector that can be tucked into the charger will not. But, there are the two USB ports on the front and these are what you use to insert the USB end of the charging cable. That's the negative thing, though the cable I got with my phone is so short I only use it for synching now and use a 10 foot long cable from Think Geek for regular charging. There are others on list who have this charger and so could probably give more specific info about what it works bets with. There's a small baggie of various sized connecters and plugs as well. Hi Les, I have a Peak 6000 and what it means is that if your iPhone is down to less than 20% where you get the first low battery warning, you should be able to charge it to 100% 3 times with the Peak 6,000. I find in reality that 3 times is scraping the bottom of the barrel, maybe if you plug it in right when it's at 20% and then don't use yor phone while it is charging then you will get 3 times out of it. You definitely get 2 full charges and a partial third charge out of it. Still, I liked the idea of having something that would charge multiple devices at once or my phone for more than one time. I have 1 such charger made by iGo. It's only a 1800 mAh battery with 2 USB ports. It's smaller then a deck of playing cards but can recharge a dead iPhone. There is a recessed charge button that when pressed starts the recharge cycle. You use your phone's sync/charge cable and when you view the battery status in the top right-hand corner it says the present status and charging. When charging is complete, the battery disconnects. You can actually be walking down the street talking on your phone wile it's recharging. I have used the charger to recharge both my wife's and my iPhones. Granted, it charges slower that way but left charging over night it will get the job done. It also has the flip out AC wall plug so you can use it as an AC source for 2 devices. I'm told but have not seen it that iGo also has the same thing but that they add the ability to charge the 1800 mAh battery via solar giving you a wide range of choices. So I'm thinking that with a 1800 mAh rechargeable battery solar charger and an AC plug, that should pretty much cover anybody's recharging needs. Even with out the solar part, the battery is small enough to Cary in a pocket or purse and still pull you out of a tight spot when you find your iPhone a wee bit short. This small of a battery is great for the iPhone. I doubt though it would be of any use with an iPad but sense I don't own one I can't speak to that. Radio Shack, big box stores and only God knows who else offers recharge solutions. You can also read about new gadgets in iPhone Life magazine. They also have a free app that is accessible. Our friend Todd Burnheart writes for them every now and then and always has a peace well worth reading. --- Regards, Alan Go Chicago Bears in 2013! Hi Sieghard, Perhaps I'm missing something here. If I plug in the cable that comes with my 4S into the Peek 6000, I can only charge the battery three times? I charge my battery every day, so within a week, I would not be able to use the Peek to charge the iPhone? RE: External Battery choice
Hi Les, You have to look at something like the Limeade L180X which has a capacity of 18,000 MAH, 3 times that of the Peak 6000. It should allow you to charge your phone about 9 or 10 times before the battery runs out of juice. Keep in mind that these external batteries are meant as an emergency power supply, e.g. you are out and about all morning and used the GPS a lot and after lunch you are down to 10% battery power, but you still have 5 hours to go until you get home. Here is where you would want to pull out your Peak 6000 or whichever battery you decide to buy and plug your phone in. You can use it as it charges and within an hour or a bit more depending on how much you use things like GPS, make calls etc. your battery will be mostly back to 100% and you have lots of juice left to get you through the day. The battery is not necessarily meant as a primary power source for your device, after all, you are most likely sleeping somewhere so even if you are travelling and stay at a hotel or maybe you stay with friends, you still have the opportunity to charge your iPhone over night off the grid so to speak. I guess we shall see, but I would disagree. You can still buy a ton of docks with 30-Pin connectors and while the iPhone 4S and, for that matter anything else with a 30-Pin connector will most likely be officially discontinued by Apple when the new iPhone comes out, there are still millions, actually tens of millions of 30-Pin devices out there and people who buy them used or own them will continue to look for 30-Pin accessories. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Andy Baracco Sent: Saturday, August 10, 2013 9:12 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: External Battery choice But I don't think that the model with the 30 pin connector is still being manufactured, and if it is, it won't be for long. Re: External Battery choice
There are more kinds of cell phone chargers out there then just what Apple offers. RE: External Battery choice
Hello Jesus, I have the MyCharge Peak 6000 and while the fact that it can speak it nice, I don't think it's that important. In fact, it is only the current, older version with the integrated 30-Pin connector which can speak, MyCharge has abandoned this feature on the new Peak 6000 with the Lightning connector and if you are getting a new iPhone at the end of the year I don't see much reason why you would buy the one with the 30-pin connector. I find the integrated cables/connectors a more useful feature than the ability to speak since all I have to stick in my pack is the Peak 6000. I can plug my iPhone in and then lay it on top of the Peak 6000 to charge (the cable is super short, but I think that's OK. I have talked on the phone while it was connected if my battery was very low and just held both the phone and charger up to my ear. It's not something you want to do for a long call since both together make for a very thick package, but it's possible and if it's a longer call I can just use the headset. Oh, and yes, the Peak 6000 does have a regular USB plug-in so if I bought an iPhone 5 now I could just use the provided Lightning cable. I also like the fact that the Peak 6000 has a fold-away wall plug which once again means you don't have to have an extra cable for charging it and it turns itself on and off automatically as soon you plug a device in or unplug it. I had an older Mophie battery which had a physical on/off switch in back and if I unplugged my phone and forgot to turn it off, it would discharge quicker. Now that I also heard about the Limeade batteries, if I had to buy a battery now or buy one for an iPhone 5, I would seriously consider the Limeade over the Peak since the new Peak doesn't talk so it's only other advantage is the integrated cables (Lightning, Micro USB and another one or 2 which aren't important for an iPhone user). What makes the Limeade very attractive is its capacity and competitive price. I paid $99 for my Peak 6000 here in Canada and for that I could buy the largest of the Limeade packs which has 3 times the capacity at 18,000 MAH and as far as I can tell it is not much larger. I just measured and weight it with my talking kitchen scale and below is the result followed by what Limeade says about their 18,000 MAH battery: MyCharge Peak 6000: 5.3 inches (13.4 cm) long, 3.0 inches (7.6 cm) wide and 1.0 inches (2.5 cm) thick. Weight is 9 ounces or 255 grams. Limeade Blast L180X:4.8 inches (12.2 cm) long, 3.1 inches (7.9 cm) wide and 0.9 inches (2.3 cm) thick. Weight is 13 ounces or 368.5 grams. As you can see the dimensions are almost identical except the Limeade is half an inch shorter, but despite that it weighs 5 ounces more, quite significant although it makes sense because of the much larger capacity. I just checked on Amazon and the MyCharge Peak 6000 seems to have dropped somewhat in price, it is listed at $99 on sale for $79 with some offers starting at $64. The Limeade L180X is still listed at $129 and on sale for $99 with free shipping which once again I think is one of the best deals given the capacity. One last observation regarding how many times it will charge yor iPhone. Limeade says on Kickstarter that it will charge an iPhone 4S or 5 12.5 times. Which strictly based on the numbers might make sense. The iPhone 5 has a 1445 MAH battery and if you divide 18,000 MAH by 1445 MAH you get 12.45. If this were true, the Peak 6,000 should charge an iPhone 4 times, however, I find that if my Peak 6,000 is completely full and I charge my iPhone to 100% when it gives me the first low battery warning at 20%, that after 2 charges like that the Peak 6,000 says its battery is low. I have actually not used it to the point where it just stops charging, but I'd say it will do 2.5 to 3 times at most which means you probably get 8 to 10 charges out of the Limeade which either way is still pretty impressive and will give you more than enough juice for what you need even if you take it camping for a few days. My conclusion is that the Limeade L180X would be my first choice were I to buy a battery right now. Also, come the end of the year I will be roling over my two year contract and will be getting a new iPhone which I assume will have the lightning connector so I don't want to be tied to a device which has only the 32 pin connectors. I assume both of these packs have the ability to use standard USB plugs with what ever connector at the other end. RE: External Battery choice
Thank you this is exactly the information I was looking for. Reading what you say in the message I am going to purchase the limeade 18000. Again thank you. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Saturday, August 10, 2013 11:00 To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: External Battery choice Hello Jesus, I have the MyCharge Peak 6000 and while the fact that it can speak it nice, I don't think it's that important. Hi Alan, What exactly do you mean by |so I can also use it as a power supply? The only battery I have seen so far which has the wall plug that folds away is the MyCharge Peak 6000. I assume maybe you mean by your statement about using it as a power supply that you want something that charges your phone while it is also plugged in and charging. I have to try on my Peak 6000 whether it does that, I know for sure that this so-called through charging is not supported by the Limeade series of batteries which have been discussed here. Hi andy, I think it would be more accurate to say that the model of the Peak 6000 with the integrated Lightning cable doesn't talk. I was just on the MyCharge website this morning and the model listed with the 30-Pin connector still mentions the voice feature and it would be my guess that the 30-Pin model will continue to have this. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Andy Baracco Sent: Saturday, August 10, 2013 12:11 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: External Battery choice The current model of the peak 6000 doesn't talk.
