RE: iPhone question.

2022-08-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Jenny,

I just had a look at Settings > Display and Brightness and you have to realize
that there are two entirely separate things here.
At the top you have "Appearance" and here you can select either "Light", "Dark"
or "Auto". This refers to the colour scheme, light mode, dark mode or automatic.
In dark mode the screen emits less light, backgrounds are dark and text is
lighter.
In light mode it is the opposite, backgrounds are very light and text or other
things are darker.
On phones with OLED screens dark mode will use a bit less power because darjk
pixels consume less power which is why turning on screen curtain where the
entire screen has only black pixels will save some power.
I am not entirely sure when "auto" is selected when light or dark is used, but
I would recommend that you should turn your Appearance to "dark".

The next area is screen brightness and once again, the higher of a percentage
you see there the more battery is used. If screen brightness is set to auto the
screen adjusts based on the light around you. In a dark room a sighted person
can see the screen perfectly well with the brightness at 0%, but if you were
outside in bright sunlight and you wanted to show somebody something on your
phone they probably couldn't see hardly anything that way and brightness would
have to be turned up to probably at least 50% or 60%.
The best option is to set screen brightness to auto. As Richard pointed out
Apple has set it up so that if Voiceover is running and you turn on the screen
curtain, brightness is reduced to 0% and this will be optimal for battery
saving. However, if you are in a position where a sighted person might want to
take a look at your phone then as soon as you either turn the screen curtain
off or if you turn Voiceover off entirely, the screen will once again be
visible and brightness will be at a level where it is easy for a sighted person
to see it.
The next item in Display and Brightness is "True Tone". There is an explanation
below it so I won't go into it, but I turn it on because I do often show
sighted people my screen because maybe I want to show them a picture or
whatever, and then I prefer it to look as good as possible.
Nightshift is the next item and for a blind person it is of little concern, you
can read what it is by tappin on it.
The next two buttons are also important, Auto Lock determins how quickly your
iPhone's screen locks when you don't use it and of course this also has a big
impact on battery life. I know there are some how set this to "Never" as they
prefer to always lock their screen by pressing the side button. I personally am
not one of them and I want my screen to lock quickly, but maybe not totally
quickly so instead of 30 seconds which is the shortest time I set auto lock to
1 minute.
Lastly there is the "Raise to Wake" which I believe most of turn off. If you
turn it on the screen wakes up as soon as you raise your phone from the table
or take it out of your pocket, belt holster or purse. I prefer to wake my phone
up manually by tapping the screen or pressing the side button. The "Tap to
wake" is also a setting you can turn on and off, I think it's somewhere in
accessibility settings.

To summarize again, turn "Dark" on under Appearance, select "auto" for
brightness and turn Raise to wake off. Then turn the screen curtain on if you
want the most battery saving.

Of course there are other settings which probably make more of a difference on
battery life than screen curtain, things like how much you use background app
refresh, what you allow in location services is a big one and also if you have
an email address set up whether you use Push or only tell it to get email every
30 minutes or even manually when you open the Mail app. It's always a trade off
between features/convenience and battery life. I personally couldn't care less
if my phone is at 40% or 20% at the end of the day, I rather have less battery
left and get the most out of the features I want including getting email as it
arrives.

When I went to settings and turned auto on now voiceover says light. Which I
know you said didn’t make any difference I just thought you guys would like to
know. And that’s a good thing I went through because it said it was at 16% but
I switched it to zero referring to the brightness when it had changed to light
once I turned on automatic.
Thanks for reading regarding this matter.

RE: iPhone question.

2022-08-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Actually Richard on your 13 Pro which has an OLED screen, screen brightness
should have no or little effect since there is no backlighting.
Turning on the screen curtain on a phone with POLED screen simply means that
all pixels turn black whereas on a phone with LCD screen which requires
backlighting so you can read it in bright light turning on the screen curtain
turns the backlighting way down and this will in fact make more of a difference.
I think I read once that there are certain colours which take less energy on
OLED screens so really your screen should not be black but whatever colour it
is which requires the least amount of energy. I'm just saying that this is the
technology explanation. I still have an iPhone 11 which according to Apple has
the most advanced LCD screen ever used, but of course it still requires
backlighting and while I do often have screen curtain on I must say I don't
actually notice that much of a difference with battery. If you do than I don't
want to argue, but I honestly can't see how you might get even 15 or 20 minutes
more battery life with screen curtain turned on on an OLED screen phone.

One thing I have noticed is that Voiceover itself seems to take up quite a lot
of battery. We went for a walk with friends the other day and both my wife and
I as well as my friend have the Apple Watch with Cellular connectivity and with
cellular also enabled and turned on. I realized that when we left that I only
had 22% of battery remaining and I started the outdoor walk workout. My friend
had 21% remaining and also started the outdoor walk workout. We were out for a
bit over an hour and my watch died after about 1 hour, my friend still had 10%
battery remaining on his watch when we came home and I thought this was pretty
significant. I also always notice when we travel how my wife who has an iPhone
11 Pro always seems to have a lot more battery left than me with my iPhone 11,
both phones are the same age and she also uses her phone a lot and in fact a
lot more with the screen on whereas I would let's say listen to a book with the
screen turned off and only sometimes do something else and I am convinced it is
because I have Voiceover running and she doesn't or my friend didn't on his
Apple Watch.

Screen brightness only impacts what someone sees on your physical phone, it
doesn’t have any impact on anything you send.

I know Apple and others do not agree with me, but I simply set screen
brightness to auto, turn on the screen curtain, which means the brightness will
be at 0 very shortly.
Then, if someone sighted needs to see my phone, I either toggle the screen
curtain off, or toggle VoiceOver off and the screen brightness adjusts to the
room lighting so they can see it fine.
I do this all the time with my wife so she can see my screen when needed.

And, charging once a day is normal. I have the 13 Pro and get a full day’s use
on a charge and I use it a lot.

IF I forget to turn on the screen curtain, I notice a definite drop in battery
life.

Logic says, if the screen brightness takes more juice, doing what I do uses
less juice, the same as manually lower the screen brightness.

Hello Jenny,

First of all, when you refer to "dark" I assume you mean dark mode versus light
mode. This has no effect on battery life, it is strictly a visual thing.
As for screen brightness that also makes no difference with respect to you
sending anybody a text, email, picture or anything else. The screen brightness
simply affects how bright your screen is not whoever you send something to.
You can think of it this way, if I have a desktop computer with a monitor it
makes no difference if the monitor is turned off and I send somebody an email
with a picture, they receive the email just the same and can look at the
picture just the same, it's not that they couldn't see it because my monitor
was turned off when I sent it using a screenreader and because I don't require
the monitor to be on unless a sighted person wants to see my computer.

Kevin, That is why you have to have screen brightness set to auto.
The screen curtain by itself does exactly what you said.
But, if you have auto brightness on; after a very short time, check the screen
brightness with the screen curtain on and it will be zero and you will notice a
difference in battery usage.

what I read was it didn’t effect the screen brightness. All it did was to have

another reason. Anyways. I currently have the screen brightness set to zero
however it was set at 33% also currently it’s set to dark so how should that be
set? Also if I send a text or an email with like say an attachment that a
visual person has to read while they be able to read it with my phone screen
set at 0% and if you guys think I should still leave dark turned on? And how
about a text message as well with pictures or text?

Thanks for reading regarding this matter.

RE: iPhone question

2017-11-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If this is a Dropbox folder on your PC I don’t think the problem is that it
won’t let you copy the tone.
What you say is that after you paste it is not listed in your list of Tones?
Could you send me one of your Tones then I could try it and see if it works for
me or if there might be a problem with the file itself.
You can email me directly, siegh...@live.ca<mailto:siegh...@live.ca>, and
attach the ringtone.
Regards,
Sieghard

I installed 12.7, I copied the ringtones from a folder I made in Dropbox
control c, then I shift tab to iTunes make sure I’m in the tones section of the
iTunes by selecting my device and tabbing to where it lists of the items like
summary etc, then went to the tone section a paste the item control V and
that’s when it says that it’s copying the file, and that’s all it says it
doesn’t say that it’s already in.

Hi Simon,

I assume you are using a Mac, since you can only copy between an iPhone and a
computer if that computer is a Mac. The Mac needs to be running at least
sierra, and Handoff needs to be working between the computer and phone. To make
sure Handoff is working, try opening a page in Safari on your phone. Then
Command-Tab on your computer and make sure "Safari from my iPHone" is an

they're connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and Handoff is on on both devices.

Re: iPhone question

2017-11-04 Thread Richard Turner

That should work for sure.
Did you make sure you were on the tones tab and then tabbed over to where you
can your list of current ringtones are on the phone?
If you paste there, it should work.
I think it was Mark Taylor sent a step-by-step guide for doing this.
I certainly understand the frustration when something that worked before is not
behaving the same.

If you are using Windows, the only thing I know of that you can copy and paste
through iTunes is ringtones.

sure Handoff is working, try opening a page in Safari on your phone. Then
Command-Tab on your computer and make sure "Safari from my iPHone" is an

Re: Iphone question

2017-09-17 Thread regina alvarado

I had the same problem. I deleted the app. Next I logged into my bank online.
At the top of the login screen is a place where it asks if you want to use the
app. I asked for the app, and it sent me to the app store. I downloaded the
app, went to it after download and double tapped on it. Now I had a fresh login
screen. I put in everything as if I was a new user. Logged in, and from that
point I had "everything back as it was. Working perfectly now. Hope this helps
a bit.

Have you tried to simply close all apps in the app switcher and reboot your

Sorry about the delay in replying to this.
The problem involved was in our banking app. We would be trying to log in and
it would continue to say logging in and it wouldn't. Then when we could log in
other weird things happed such as not being able to go in to certain accounts.
We called the bank and they said it wasn't them. Then we called Apple and they
never would answer the question. So, we began to wonder what would the phone do
or act like if it had been hacked. Would we know and how would we know? Is
their something you can check in the phone that would let you know if the phone
has been hacked?
Thanks for any input or suggestions that you might have.

Not really, but I find it strange that a financial institution doesn't update
their up in over a year. Anyhow, if somebody theoretically could access your
iPhone then they still couldn't use your bank app because I assume you do have
to sign in with your account or bank card number and a password? They would
also need to know your bank password/log in credentials at which point it would
be much easier for somebody to simply log in via a web browser. I really
wouldn't worry, the iPhone is the most secure phone out there and hacking is
just not something you hear about. After all, even the US government had one
heck of a hard time to get access to the iPhone of that guy who shot all these
people in California and that was a much less secure version of iOS as what we
have now.

Can you explain what is happening that makes you think that?
I don't think it's likely, but if you descrie the phone's behaviour it might
help.

/Definitely GSM, CDMA is not around much any more except for a few carriers in
the States and I think maybe Japan. Here in Canada Telus and Bell, two of the
three large carriers, were all CDMA back in the 90's and early 2000's, but now

I think pretty much most of the rest of the world is GSM including Europe,

What you need to know is whether your area uses GSM or CDMA. My guess is that
it uses GSM, so if the iPhone is a GSM phone it will work.
CDMA, I think, is primarily a United States protocol used mostly by Verizon.
I'd suggest doing some google research on that.
