RE: A Bluetooth Speaker question

2021-07-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can't stereo pair a Sonos Roam and another speaker, it would have to be two
Sonos Roam speakers.
A single Roam speaker is mono, there really isn't much point in trying to get
stereo sound out of a 6-inch long speaker, but nonetheless it sounds pretty
impressive.
As for Airplay 2, as far as I know you can send your iPhone's output to
multiple Airplay 2 speakers, but of course if you were to put two totally
different speakers into a single room 5 or 6 feet apart you still wouldn't get
stereo sound if each speaker didn't support this and with different
characteristics I am not sure this would sound all that great. This would be
more useful if you want to play the same thing in two different rooms, sort of
a way to do this without a Sonos system with speakers in different rooms, but I
actually haven't tried this since I have Sonos speakers everywhere in the house.
The Roam and its larger brother, the Move, both also support Alexa or Google
Assistant. You can't have both active at the same time, but you can choose
which one you want to set up and change that if you want.
I think I read that with iOS 15 Apple is also opening up access to SIRI so I
wouldn't be surprised if you soon will be able to set up your Sonos speakers
with SIRI, I know when Sonos first introduced Alexa support some years ago they
told me that their goal was to support all the major digital assistants. This
is another nice thing with Sonos, you get regular software updates so new
features are easily added unless you have some of the really old hardware which
can't support it, but even people who have such speakers can still use them
with the S1 controller, they don't have he latest features like auto TruePlay
tuning which is also available on the Roam, but their system continues to
function.

I guess it is probablya stereo speaker so that question is probably not

Richard said it well, there really is no installation required unless you want

a stud in your wall and screw the wall mount onto the wall. Apart from that you
just find a shelf or whatever else to put the speaker on and your only

of course you could use an extension cord if you are too far. Once the speaker

As far as connecting as stereo pairs, you can do that through the Sonos app
quite easily.

I suspect if you had two Sonos Roam’s you could do that and then spread them
out for a wider stereo experience….but I’m not buying a second one to test that
theory.

I’ve never tried playing two different speakers over Airplay 2 since I don’t
have 2 different airplay 2 speakers.
Again, with Sonos, I can elect to play my iPhone over just the speakers in my
office, or any combination of the speakers in the house.

I do not know the general answer, but in the case of the Sonos Roam, as part of
the Sonos echo system, most other Sonos speakers are Wi-Fi only and are
designed to be connected only to your home/business wi-fi.
They also connect over Wi-Fi with Airplay.
Using Airplay, allows you to keep VoiceOver on your device, do whatever else
you want on your phone while the media is playing through Airplay.

What I discovered with some Bluetooth devices, and the Roam is one, if in the
Bluetooth settings, under more info for that speaker, you set the type to
Speaker, as opposed to headphones, then VoiceOver also stays on the iDevice,
but all sounds, incoming texts, mail, etc., will also play over the Bluetooth
speaker.

With Airplay, only the media you elect to play will come over the speaker.

If you have other Sonos speakers, you can add the Roam to your home system and
switch back to it after being out and about with bluetooth

understand how this works.

It is now, but the Sonos app was not always like that. When I first started
buying Sonos in 2009 the app was barely useable for a blind person and some
things weren't. It took many years of lobbying by myself andby Neil
Barnfather from England until finally around 2011 or 2012 Sonos made a
commitment to accessibility which has never been broken.

It certainly can be a stand-alone item.
You will want to download the Sonos app for setting it up. The app is quite
accessible with VoiceOver.
I was hesitant to get into Sonos because of the cost.
But, my wife and I had decided that in retirement we wanted a sound system that
could go throughout the house.
A local high-end audio store came to do an assessment with recommendations.
It would have cost something like $1600 for them to hard-wire a system that
would just cover the living room and kitchen.
We decided hard-wired was not the way to go.
When I brought up wireless, he said that Sonos would be the way to go.
To keep a long story, less long; they would have charged I think around $400 to

Richard said it well, there really is no installation required unless you want
the speakers wall mounted in which case you or somebody else would have to find
a stud in your wall and screw the wall mount onto the wall. Apart from that you
just find a shelf or whatever else to put the speaker on and your only
requirement would be that you are near a wall outlet so you can plug it in, but
of course you could use an extension cord if you are too far. Once the speaker
is plugged in you open the app and it will recognize the new speaker and tell
you what to do. Richard called the app "quite accessible", I am not sure what
the "quite" part is because I think it is fully and entirely accessible and
easy to use. I actually find it is so easy and well done that it's quite fun to
set up a new speaker.
You can start with any speaker Sonos makes whether it's a Roam or a single
Sonos SL and add anything else to it whenever you have the money or feel like
it.

Hi,

Yes the roam can be used as a standalone device,

And yes as Richard said about the sonos app,
It's very easy to setup a home theatre system in an apartment.

My sonos hardware is older and it was very easy with the app to setup.

And the newer products are even easier I have been leed to believe.

I wish to thank everybody who has offered suggestions about my bluetooth
speaker issue. I'll certainly consider the Sonos Roam. Can it work by itself
without a whole home theater system, and, if, at some point, I wanted a
complete Sonos outfit, is it difficult to install, in, say, an apartment? This
question might belabor the issue and keep the subject going for another day or
two, but since some of you have the products, you can answer on good

I could not say anything against what you've written here,

Infact I would highly agree on it all.

Infact if I was looking for a Bluetooth speaker and had the finances,

The roam would be at the top of my want list for such a device,

My home theatre system is the older sonos stuff but I've got no issues with it
or what it's putting out in the way of audio.

But as you say this brand of audio products is way out there on the to have
list.

Great work writing this up.

select the room where you want to play music and what music you want to play
and it will play. If you want to play music in 2 or 3 rooms or all over your
house it's no problem, as long as you have a Sonos speaker or speakers in a
room you can group any rooms or the entire house. The first portable speaker
Sonos released was the Move about 2 or maybe almost 3 years ago, but it was
rather large and still quite expensive and while it's a great speaker for the
deck or in the backyard, it's probably not a speaker you want to throw in your
backpack wwhen you go somewhere and this is where the Roam comes in, it's more
the size of a Bose Soundlink, but since it is a Sonos speaker it still is part
of the Sonos system when you are at home and connected to WiFi and only if you
are out of range of your WiFi it will automatically switch to Bluetooth and act
just like any other Bluetooth speaker.
By now Sonos has a very large and complete selection of speakers for all rooms
and uses from the two portable speakers to the Sonos SL which is basically the
size of a Sonos Move but not portable (all of these speakers can also be set up
as a stereo pair if you have two of the same), then you have the Sonos One
which is like the Sonos SL but it has microphones and you can set it up either
with Alexa or the Google Assistant. Then you have the Sonos Five which is a
much larger speaker, more like a traditional boombox and you can use a single
Five in horizontal orientation or, if you have two of them, place them upright
to work as a stereo pair. Next is the TV surround setup for the living room
which consists of either the smaller Beam soundbar or the much larger Arc
soundbar, both are capable of Dolby Atmos sound and you get the best result if
you add a set of Sonos SL as rear speakers and the Sonos wireless Sub as a
subwover. The Beam and Arc of course would be placed underneath your TV, the
rear speakers would be behind you and can be wall mounted and the Sonos Sub is
about the size of a desktop tower, but it weighs a little over 35 pounds and
despite I ts compact size it's an absolutely amazing sub. You can even add a
second Sub to the setup for maximum base. Of course this is not a cheap system,
an Arc soundbar, two Sonos SL rear speakers and a wireless Sub sold as a
surround package here in Canada is I think somewhere around $23,50, in USD I
think around $1,600 or $1,700.
Sonos also has a partnership with Ikea and they have just released a digital
picture frame which also acts as a Sonos speaker, not sure if it has the
digital assistant capability and I along with many other Sonos fans who have
had their system for a long time (I bought my first Sonos gear in 2009) are all
holding our breath for a headset which may really be coming in the next year or
so, finally. It's expected that this would be a full-size over the ear design
in the $500 or so price range, but again also capable of being a "zone" in a
Sonos system. This means I can play any music or audio book directly on it or,
if my wife is watching TV and I want to listen but do something in the kitchen
I can group it with the living room and listen in to the same thing.

RE: A Bluetooth Speaker question

2021-07-18 Thread Richard Turner

HTH,
Richard

Most airplay to compatible speakers are only available through Wi-Fi.
Bluetooth can always be used even without Wi-Fi. But I don’t quite understand
your question. In general, I find that the airplay to devices work better than
the Bluetooth devices. However, I’m not really sure if that’s what you’re
asking about either. Give me some more information and I’ll try to help you
figure it out it is confusing when to use what and what works with what.

Which brings up another question. What's the advantage of a speaker being able
to connect with WiFi, and also be able to pair via bluetooth? If your device is
already using WiFi, why should the speaker also have to use WiFi? Not sure I
understand how this works.

RE: A Bluetooth Speaker question

2021-07-18 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Well, one thing I would take advantage of if a speaker was on wifi and
supported ChromeCast is that I could send whatever stream I'm listening to on
my phone over to the speaker and Chromecast would take over and I could then
use my phone for whatever I want. The phone is not connected to the speaker and
the stream is going straight to the speaker.

In fact, one thing on my wish list is to get headphones that are also smart and
on wifi. That way I could Chromecast to my headphones and then wonder around my
house without having to worry about where my phone is. I could also just use
the smart feature on the headphones to start playing a stream, start a timer or
ask Siri something. I wouldn’t' have to dig out my phone or hope that I was in
the range of a smart speaker.

RE: A Bluetooth Speaker question

2021-07-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Keep in mind that while the Sonos Roam can work as a Bluetooth speaker it is
meant to work on WiFi when you are at home and if you want to play something
that is playing on your iPhone you would use Airplay to send it to the speaker.

Well, the Sonos Roam, which is both Wi-Fi and Buetooth, has aprox. 10 hours of
battery life on a full charge, has tone settings if you go through the Sonos
app. You can turn on or off the Loudness feature that boosts the base for
everything; which I find will cause it to clip at anything but a very low
volume.

But, it actually has settings to adjust the base and treble on a slider that
works.
We have other Sonos speakers, so it made sense to get this one.
$169.

And has been pointed out, there are some very basic settings in the music app
on the iPhone. And quite a few pre-set settings for different styles of music
in there as well.

The Roam gives plenty of volume and has great sound.

Hello iPhone Listers,

I have a Bluetooth question. I own several speakers including a couple of Bose
ones. Unfortunately, none of my speakers offers the option to control the
amount of bass and treble being put out. Sometimes, I think the Bose units put
out too much bass. Does anyone have any idea what kind of speakers offers tone
options? Thanks in advance.

RE: A Bluetooth Speaker question

2021-07-17 Thread Richard Turner

Subject: A Bluetooth Speaker question

Hello iPhone Listers,

I have a Bluetooth question. I own several speakers including a couple of Bose
ones. Unfortunately, none of my speakers offers the option to control the
amount of bass and treble being put out. Sometimes, I think the Bose units put
out too much bass. Does anyone have any idea what kind of speakers offers tone
options? Thanks in advance.

Peace & Blessings,

Re: A Bluetooth Speaker question

2021-07-17 Thread Anthony Vece
There are settings under the music app on your iPhone. Those settings only
control the music that you are playing from your iPhone. They will not control
other applications. You go under settings general and music. Good luck
Anthony
