I bought it the day it was released, $14.95 or so, then I tried it and never got the hang of it. Gave my 4 to my husband, he tried it, never got the hang of it. So I figure I supported an app that would help others if not me. They will have made it free to get as many users as possible as that will significnatly increase their chances of getting it as a built in keyboard in IOS. They have maybe deliberately taken a risk to provide it free as if it did get implimented as a built in keyboard they would get some kind of large licencing fee from Apple. I paid the original price for the app and have no problem with it being free now. Everything we buy comes down in price eventually! Hello! Flexi is ok for me. I don't really like the fact that we have to guess where each letter is and then insert it. I don't like it to have no feedback for the letters. Although, I feel that it was very nice of the company to offer it for free for the people who do like it excluding me. I would like it if Flexie was nice enough to give me more letter feedback because I can't see the screen at all and I don't feel like the need to know where each letter is sitting. Thanks! The whole point of Fleksy is that you can type fast without the feedback. If you want that feedback, just use the regular Apple virtual keyboard. For those of us who practice with Fleksy a bit and have the special awareness to type out a word's pattern, you can type quite fast and certainly faster than if I had to listen first each time to hear if I tapped the correct letter. What was previously free when Fleksy was still a paid app was just a sort of demo mode. It allowed you to type and see if you liked the app, but you could not send the text anywhere. Now Fleksy is completely free so there is no need for this demo mode any more, you can get the app for free and use all its features. Hi Shane, I think it's OK to comment on a post like the one from Andy, but maybe a bit more diplomacy is in order. I replied to Andy myself, but I feel it serves no purpose to use language which can easily be considered to be rude and insulting. Mind you, I totally agree that it is completely OK for a developer to decide to make an app available for free even though they charged for it initially, but we all have opinions and live in a free country where it's OK to express said opinions, it's OK to disagree with others and even to set them straight using facts and arguments which both David, you and I did, but it's better to stick to the arguments and leave out the derogative comments. Hi folks. Anyone know anything about if Fleksy is going to become more international? You try to more or less type the word and Fleksy guesses by the pattern of where you touched the scree which word it is you wanted to type. After you type a word you do a quick single finger swipe to the right and Voiceover will read the word Fleksy thinks you want. If the word is not correct you can swipe down to access a list of similar words and if the word you want is in the list you swipe right again to accept it and continue. When you finished typing you can bring up a menu and from there either send the text you typed to the mail app, the messages, to Facebook or Twitter or you can copy the text to the clipboard and paste it into any application you want. Unfortunately Fleksy cannot be set as the default keyboard in iOS so that anywhere the keyboard comes up you could use it because Apple does not give developers access to integrate such a keyboard system wide. Anyhow, I am not sure how long you have been a member on Viphone, but there are literally hundreds of messages about Fleksy in the list archives and now the Fleksy is free I suggest you simply download it and try it out for yourself. Also, if you ever want to know what an app is or does you can always just look it up in the app store or google it. Chances are you get more information and a better description than you would get on here. Hi, I bought fleksy in the very beginning when it cost $15, but I'm still very greatful they made it free. It will definitely provide those who are less fortunate the oppurtunity to fully use fleksy. Hi Sieghard, Why do you and I think so much alike. That's the first thing I thought when I saw the first post. What an excellent way to put pressure on Apple. I happen to think it just might work. What an excellent addition to the product when manufacturers are desperately looking for new ideas just to stay alive and what a great gain it would be for the whole of the world's blind population. If it was taken by Apple, a lot more development dollars would go into it to bring it to other languages and the possibilities are endless. Let's think positive. I agree Ron. I have been a Fleksy user since July of last year around the time that the product was officially released. Even though I paid the full price then, I strongly believe that I got my money's worth. Thanks to the Fleksy team for developing an app that is truly a game changer for those of us who are blind. Who doesn't? I think he's aggravated because the app has gone free. I can see both sides of the coin here though. With Fleksy going free, he feels like he got ripped off. On the other hand, I waited and didn't purchase fleksy because with the lack of it being among my keyboards, I didn't feel the need to purchase it. With this product now free, it is my gain to use it. I am very happy that the developers are able to make Fleksy free. I also have no problem with the fact that I bought the full version of Fleksy not too long ago. I will gladly pay for an app that will allow me to use my IPhone in a manner where I can leave the Blue Tooth keyboard at home, and I will gladly pay for an app if it allows the developers to continue to improve the product. Hi, as much as I hate the me too or I agree messages, let me be a bit hypocritical and say that I agree with the comments of people supporting the Fleksy team even though they may have paid for the app at either $15 or $5. I was one of the ones who purchased it at $5, but would still feel alright about it if I had bought it for $15. The app is very nicely put together, and the fact that they can make it free is a huge bonus for those who may otherwise not be able to afford it. Also, this is just life. I am not offended in the least that I spent $5 and it's now free because I am now keeping my fingers crossed that this will be the step for apple to purchase fleksy and integrate it as part of it's iOS. I don't know if that will happen, nor do I know if this is the goal of fleksy but I do not use fleksy very often even though I love it and it's an awesome app. I just find it very cumbersome to switch between the texting app and fleksy while carrying on a conversation via text. I like it for email and an occasional FB post. I think we should be supportive of fleksy's efforts to get this integrated with the ios in some way. I didn't get it before and am not that interested in getting it now, even though it is free, I don't use the on-screen keyboard and didn't like the program, anyway, when I was working with it during the testing period. Having said that, I am rather confused about what the people here want the developers to do. Say you're a program developer, and would, because you have found another source of funding for your program, because you want to get your program on more devices, because you want advertising revenue, because you want to give back to the community, or whatever other reason you have, like to make your program free of charge. Say that you couldn't do that from the very beginning for whatever reason, or even say that you tried to make a living profit on the program and found you couldn't, so decided to take the goodwill of making the program free. What ought you to do? Ought you to give a refund to all your purchasers? What if you've already spent the money on such things as shelter and food? BTW, why not do that whenever you have a sale? After all, there may be people who bought just before the sale, so it would obviously be reasonable to refund to everyone who purchased at the regular price. Ought you not to make your program free, thus leaving other people to pay when they need not and just collect whatever funds come in? I don't have a problem with Fleksy now being free. Things change with companies and people and they need to do what's right based on the current situation. I'm sure people would also complain if they found out that the makers of Fleksy were now getting other funding sources so they didn’t need to charge for Fleksy but they still continued to do so. I disagree with your statement that a lot of blind people are crying for things to be free. Some are, I'm sure, but that's not most or even a lot of blind people. It's also no different than the general community. I guess I'm a bit sensitive when the blind get lumped into one prejudged group, whether the source of that prejudgement comes from the blind or the sighted. I didn't get it before and am not that interested in getting it now, even though it is free, I don't use the on-screen keyboard and didn't like the program, anyway, when I was working with it during the testing period. Having said that, I am rather confused about what the people here want the developers to do. Say you're a program developer, and would, because you have found another source of funding for your program, because you want to get your program on more devices, because you want advertising revenue, because you want to give back to the community, or whatever other reason you have, like to make your program free of charge. Say that you couldn't do that from the very beginning for whatever reason, or even say that you tried to make a living profit on the program and found you couldn't, so decided to take the goodwill of making the program free. What ought you to do? Ought you to give a refund to all your purchasers? What if you've already spent the money on such things as shelter and food? BTW, why not do that whenever you have a sale? After all, there may be people who bought just before the sale, so it would obviously be reasonable to refund to everyone who purchased at the regular price. Ought you not to make your program free, thus leaving other people to pay when they need not and just collect whatever funds come in? Surely, that would be depriving someone of a useful program if they couldn't pay for it? What should the developers have done so as not to upset some people, if I may ask? Hi Ezzie, Fleksy is a keyboard/typing app. It allows you to type text without the need to exactly hit each character. You try to more or less type the word and Fleksy guesses by the pattern of where you touched the scree which word it is you wanted to type. After you type a word you do a quick single finger swipe to the right and Voiceover will read the word Fleksy thinks you want. If the word is not correct you can swipe down to access a list of similar words and if the word you want is in the list you swipe right again to accept it and continue. When you finished typing you can bring up a menu and from there either send the text you typed to the mail app, the messages, to Facebook or Twitter or you can copy the text to the clipboard and paste it into any application you want. Unfortunately Fleksy cannot be set as the default keyboard in iOS so that anywhere the keyboard comes up you could use it because Apple does not give developers access to integrate such a keyboard system wide. Anyhow, I am not sure how long you have been a member on Viphone, but there are literally hundreds of messages about Fleksy in the list archives and now the Fleksy is free I suggest you simply download it and try it out for yourself. Also, if you ever want to know what an app is or does you can always just look it up in the app store or google it. Chances are you get more information and a better description than you would get on here. Hi Andy, And how often have you bought something that went on sale shortly after, probably a ton of times without even knowing it. When I read the blog post I knew already that there would be some nasty comments from people who paid $5 for Fleksy and who are now angry because the developers decided to make the app free. Give me a break, it's $5, not $100. However, keep in mind that Fleksy being free may appeal to a lot of people and the way I read the blog post is that the idea behind this is to put pressure on Apple to allow developers of such apps to make them available system wide or, if Apple chooses to do so, for Apple to either buy them or come up with their own more intuitive keyboard. If that happens and I somehow have little doubt that the combination of an app like Fleksy becoming very popular and the fact that on phones like Android or the new Blackberry typing on a virtual keyboard is a much more effortless and faster process, we may indeed see Apple doing something really innovative from which we all benefit. Typing with fleksy is very much like the touch typing mode that is native to the iPhone except you don't wait to hear the letter before lifting your finger from the screen. Try the sentence This is a test. Once you have fleksy running, simply begin by touching the screen where you think the letter t is located. Without waiting to hear the letter spoken, lift your finger and touch where the h should be. Continue in this way until you've typed the entire sentence then to get the options menu, touch the upper part of the screen. I believe this is a great app too, but I have 3questions. Is there a way to delete when typing by letters? Can someone explain to me how to capitalize words? I have tried moving my finger up on the screen but I must be doing something wrong. Having a very difficult time bringing up the screen to send the message. Well, I think I just found the place to bring it up. I was touching the top of the screen and only hearing what I typed. It is in the middle. It is still more difficult to get to than before. Michelle, glad to know I am not the only one who is having some trouble bringing up the screen to send. The thing I like so much is that is even more responsive than the previous version. I have a tendency to make large movements with my finger and am trying to stop this, but it seems to know what I am waving all over the place to type. Very nice! Hi Reggie, You delete by swiping left. If you are typing the slow way, i.e. by touching and holding the screen until you hear the letter spoken, swiping left will erase each letter you typed this way one at a time. If you are typing the fast way by touching approximately where you think the letter should be and by doing the pattern, then a swipe left will undo what you typed since the last word, e.g. if you want to type Hello Peter and you typed Hello correctly and it read it back and then you realize you started out wrong for peter, you swipe left once and there is a little swish sound which means you can start over. If you typed Peter and it doesn't come up and is not in the list of suggestions, just do a swipe left after you reach the end of the suggestions and, if for example the last word in the suggestions was other Fleksy would make the swish sound and say deleted other. Now you can give it another try. As for capitalization, you have to find the letter you want to capitalize the slow way, then once Voiceover announces the letter lift your finger and do a 1-finger swipe up from the bottom towards the top, sometimes and I think it's mostly if you have typed nothing else yet, Voiceover just repeats the letter and you have to swipe up a second time before it will capitalize it. If you do want Fleksy to read back what you typed you can either raise the phone to your ear or you can just hover your hand or palm over the top of the phone, you don't have to actually touch the screen to trigger this. As for activating the menu once you are done typing, try and touch the screen at the level of where the volume up and down buttons are. In fact, you could put a finger over top of them so you feel both the volume up and down, then lift that finger move right just a bit (you don't have to be in the middle of the screen) and plop it down on the screen just to the right of where the volume buttons are, hold for half a second or so and you should hear the dong followed immediately by Voiceover saying Alert followed by the text you typed, as soon as you hear the dong you can lift your finger off the screen, if it is a long message you can touch the screen once with 2 fingers to stop Voiceover from continueing to read. Now you can swipe right and find the option you want, Copy and Clear, email, message etc. If you want to continue and add more text, double tap on the Cancel button just above the Home Key, it is the last option in the menu, but quickly found by putting your finger on the Home Key and sliding up just a bit. Thanks Rebecca. Still cannot figure out how to capitalize. Does it announce that the letter is capitalized? Seems that could be easier and so could bringing up the screen to send. It would be nice if there could be a clear button added to the choices of options in the menu. I know there is a copy and clear button, but what if I am practicing and just want to clear what I have written? I could have used this option earlier today when practicing in the updated app. I know that there may be a concern of having too many options there, but if you do it right, or even offer a button leading to a submenu of choices, the options could be easily managed. You know? I was thinking the same. There should be a simple clear button and the copy/clear. However, for now, you can erase your practice by just running your finger to the left and not picking it up. Eventually you will erase what you have written. BTW, it makes a sound as if you were rewinding an audible file or a tape, (now gosh what is a tape I hear from the younger folks). I completely agree. It's not so bad if you've only got a few words, slide left and hold to mass delete words but if you've got a decent amount of text, this would be nice. I mentioned this to the gf, sense she's the one that purchased fleksy for me and she said I was being to picky and complaining. LOL All the same though, her and I are both super happy with the update for sure. Only thing that would make it even better would be if we could have it implemented into an actual keyboard you could use for all edit boxes, but, unless apple decides to start allowing keyboards in the appstore, it's a no go, I figure. I agree, I'd hate to see another button on there when copy and clear does the job. If you are not using the text for anything, there's no harm at all. Hello All, I must say I *really* like the latest update of Fleksey. I find that I'm even faster now that we don't have to keep doing the tripple click each time we want to use the app and then I especially like the copy clear button at the top of the menus. This incredible app continues to improve with each new update! I'm glad that they have a free version for those who may want to try before they buy if especially if they don't know anyone who has the app. Has anyone put it on their iPad yet? I'm considering putting it on here to see how it does, but I do have a bluetooth keyboard case so I do always have a hardware keyboard for times such as now when I want to type a lot of text, otherwise I use the on screen one just fine. thanks for reading. Hi Katey , yes, I put Fleksy on my iPad. I am a terrible typist on a regular key board, and usually start out touch typing, and slowly revert to the hunt and peck method. With Fleksy my hunt and peck has increased in speed about 50%. Considering how well this app works on all my devices, I am beginning to believe that this app was created just for me!
