Yes, lack of braille support is why I will never support Kid Friendly
Software until it is developed. Even on an AppleVis podcast, Marty was
asked about braille support, and his reply was that he didn't know how
well it worked, since some people have reported that it does, while
others say it didn't. I'm here to tell you that I reached out to him
over a year ago to try and resolve the braille issues and was blown
off. He now says that braille will be supported in the next release,
but since whoever told him the braille support was working clearly has
no idea what they're doing, I hope he find some other betas testers
who actually do.

I've not been an RSS games player, but this might be worth checking out.

RS Games shuts the box on only computer playing, goes Apples to Apples with
iOS
Scott Davert yesterday 11:54 PM ET

Earlier today, RS Games announced on Twitter that there is now an iOS
version of its service available. The app, was developed with Kid Friendly
Software features many of the gestures and voice settings found in the
conventional Blindfold series of games.
While the app is free, not all games are free to play. The games that are
free include Slots, Blackjack, Pig, and Driedel. All other games come with a
free 7 day trial which starts the first time you launch them, whether you
play them right away or not. Once your trial expires on a specific game, you
can then continue to use it via an in-app purchase. All other games that are
currently on the RS Games Server are available for purchase. The prices on
games ranged from $2.99 for a few of the games, up to $5.99 for monopoly.
There are also bundles available which allows you to save a few dollars. You
can pay for unlimited access to all games for $37.99. After downloading the
app, you will find more details under the upgrades button.

This news will have players excitedly downloading the games, the developers
encourage players to check out the User Guide under the help button before
trying to play. From the limited testing I've done before writing this
article, the gestures appear to work well, and so do the keyboard commands
if quicknav is disabled. Unfortunately, even though there is a setting that
is designed for braille display users, none of the spoken feedback comes up
on the braille display during game play. This was tested under 2 different
iDevices with 2 different braille displays. However, for a 1.0 release, it
seems quite solid based on initial testing.

2016-07-27 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi!
I'm replying on this one because it's the latest I have. I read the
arguments and came to this:
RS Games client for iOS is a good thing, I wrote to developers about
it sometimes in 2012 or 2013 and I'm glad it exists now for iOS
users.
I don't believe or think blind folks have to get everything for free
and I usually don't have a problem to pay for the app if I consider
it worth it.
However, I tried BlindFold RS Games app this afternoon and I find it
very useful and intuitive but I'm really in the dilemma should I pay
or should I not. Considering the European watt the cheapest game is
$3.25 and the most expensive one $6.99 (if I'm remembering well). My
opinion on this is those in-app purchases should be much cheaper. Me
personally and many people I know don't have a problem to pay for
something which cost $1.25 or $2.50 but spending seven bucks is a
bit too much. There are tones of sighted games with decent graphics
and sound which cost just a few bucks and the same should apply for
the blind games.
Besides that, when I tested the game I was getting the commercial
blocks as seen in the PC app. I don't know are those going away
after in-app purchase but I doubt it because this is general server
thing with broadcasting advertisements to all clients and I don't
want to see those in the paid version. Nobody said anything about it
or I have missed it in the ters and conditions.
So, paying something is not the problem, problem is overpaying
because we are blind. That's why I never gonna purchase KNFB Reader
for $125 and I'll stick to TextGrabber and the Voice.

Anyhow, why not just agree to disagree, those who think it's ridiculous to pay can play for free on the computer and those who like having access to the games on their iOS devices and who don't mind paying somebody for their effort can pay. I guess it also makes a difference if you are a blind person who is out and about and who may like mobile access to these games or whether you are just sitting around at home for whatever reason where you can play on the computer.

The original developers were able to create the apps for free. Why couldn't they have found blind people within the community willing to work for free to port the app?

I Can’t believe how ungrateful some blind people can be. For years people have
been complaining that there wasn’t an app on iOS for RS Games. Now we have an
app and people are complaining about the cost. You don’t have to pay for the
entire bundle of games. That is only one of the options available to you.
Just buy the games you want and be done with it.

It takes a lot of time and money to develop apps. You can’t expect people to
do it for free!!! It just seems like some blind people want everything handed
to them. I’m sorry if this sounds harsh. I really don’t mean it to be. Not
all blind people are like this. It is just sad that so many of us are.

If you want a version of RS Games on iOS that you can play for free, go out and
develop it then. Maybe then you will have some appreciation for what it takes
to develop an app.

I’m done ranting now. Like I said, I really don’t mean to offend anyone. I’m
just tired of all the bitching and complaining because there are in app
purchases.

You are missing the point. The people who developed the games for windows did
it as a hobby because they wanted to and they apparently didn't care if they
got paid. The people who ported these games to iOS docare if they get paid.
Apparently it's their livelihood and they need to eat. So, you get to pay if
you want to play it on this platform.

YOU CAN ALSO USE THE PC/LAPTOP WITH YOUR SCREEN READER THESE GAMES are
fantastic and the creator should be very proud of themselves not all game
platforms are multi platform games.

I for one am very pleased with this but I can see your point of view as well
just wanted to let everyone know it is a multi platform product so just think
of it as being able to play on your phone in your lunch break and then use the
laptop/pc when you get home this is a bargain!!!

Also, I can get an app for free to play plenty of those games too. It's called
DiceWorld, and doesn't use some fancy UI that doesn't even use Voiceover. So
while y'all RS-games folks have to listen to what's going on, I can have my
phone in my pocket and my braille display in front of me, dicing along. I know,
most don't care about that, but being able to quickly feel the numbers rolled
during Farkle without having to spend several moments waiting, for, TTS, to,
finish, speaking, to know, what, I, have, is just annoying.

Also, I can get an app for free to play plenty of those games too. It's
called DiceWorld, and doesn't use some fancy UI that doesn't even use
Voiceover. So while y'all RS-games folks have to listen to what's going
on, I can have my phone in my pocket and my braille display in front of
me, dicing along. I know, most don't care about that, but being able to
quickly feel the numbers rolled during Farkle without having to spend
several moments waiting, for, TTS, to, finish, speaking, to know, what,
I, have, is just annoying.

Quite ridiculous.
If I were sighted, I could find an app to play for free. People make
these apps, and rip you off because you are blind. How fair is that?

Also, kid friendly software games aren't worth it in the first place.
I guarantee you if they had partnered with anyone else, it would
have been less.
I'll stick to playing for free on my mac, and those who choose can
get ripped off.

Cut the price by 75 percent, and we'll talk.

Re: RSS Games on the Apple devices, was RE: pretty exciting

2016-07-26 Thread Christopher Chaltain
A company can set whatever price they want. I'm not sure why there's so
much talk about fairness here. If you think the games are worth it then
pay for them, if not, then don't. If they're charging too much then
they'll either lower the price or they'll go out of business. It's their
call.

I can't speak for anyone's financial situation other than my own, and I
only know how much something is worth to me. I'd never put anyone else
down by saying that something they paid for was over priced. I'm also
very uninterested in whether others feel something is worth it or not.

There are a lot of reasons why someone might charge more for an iPhone
app then they would for a PC game. It costs a bit of money to become an
Apple developer, get an App ?Store account and push an app out to the
App ?Store. Maybe the company wants to recoup those expenses. Maybe the
company has in house PC skills but they have no experience writing
mobile applications. If there's going to be an iPhone app then someone
will have to develop it and maybe they'll charge for their skills and
expertise. Maybe they see the popularity of the iPhone, especially among
blind people, and they see how much blind people are willing to pay for
their iPhones, and they think they can make some money selling an iPhone
app but not a PC application. Only time will tell if they're right or not.

I'm not sure, but personally I believe they shouldn't be. I feel they
should charge you for at least the client, since it does take time and
money to keep that updated at the very least.

Hi okay I haven’t ever played games on my computer or phone but if I did want
to I would think the cost should be the same. So computer is free you say why
can’t they charge the same in the middle so people feel better about this. What
is the best games out there for a beginner. I am asking this for a phone Louise

RS Games shuts the box on only computer playing, goes Apples to Apples with iOS

Scott Davert yesterday 11:54 PM ET

Earlier today, RS Games announced on Twitter that there is now an iOS version
of its service available. The app, was developed with Kid Friendly Software
features many of the gestures and voice settings found in the conventional
Blindfold series of games.

While the app is free, not all games are free to play. The games that are free
include Slots, Blackjack, Pig, and Driedel. All other games come with a free 7
day trial which starts the first time you launch them, whether you play them

This news will have players excitedly downloading the games, the developers
encourage players to check out the User Guide under the help button before
trying to play. From the limited testing I've done before writing this article,
the gestures appear to work well, and so do the keyboard commands if quicknav
is disabled. Unfortunately, even though there is a setting that is designed for
braille display users, none of the spoken feedback comes up on the braille
display during game play. This was tested under 2 different iDevices with 2
different braille displays. However, for a 1.0 release, it seems quite solid
based on initial testing.

Really? You want to find a developer who will do it for free? Blind people
have to eat, too. And, even if they did find someone to do it for free, you
might sacrifice quality. So many blind people are so entitled. They think
that everything should be free to them because they’re blind. Honestly, I’ll
happily put down the money, once I have it. Get over it. DOn’t buy it if
you don’t want to, but don’t complain about how they’re ripping people off.
They’re not. It takes a lot to port something to the iPhone. Sighted people
pay for high quality games, too. Honestly, this complaining sickens me and
makes me ashamed of our community.

I'm really starting to agree with the poster who said something about people
being entitled, and thinking everything should be free on all platforms if it
is free on the others. For one thing, I don't think it should be free on Mac
and Windows. It takes time for them to develop the games, as well as the
clients and keep them updated. I think they should charge money just like the
iOS developer is doing. Not only does it support the iOS developer it supports
RS directly as well.

Hello,
People will hate me for this... I'm trying it now, but, considering it's free
on windows, I'm at a loss, as to why I should pay on IOS, just because kid
friendly software produced it. I'll play with windows, ι think, but nice to
have this option. maybe I'll write the developers in a while.

if it's not worth it to you, don't buy them. But what's the point of
complaining on list? Those who will want it will find it worth it, and
those who don't, won't. The other thing you have to remember is that
Apple charges a developer fee each year to keep apps in the App Store.
And, yes, maybe they could have found someone who knows xcoe to do it

Maybe not all blind people want to work for free, either.
Anyhow, why not just agree to disagree, those who think it's ridiculous to pay
can play for free on the computer and those who like having access to the games
on their iOS devices and who don't mind paying somebody for their effort can
pay. I guess it also makes a difference if you are a blind person who is out

Re: RSS Games on the Apple devices, was RE: pretty exciting

2016-07-26 Thread Michael Feir
You would be hard pressed to find blind people with the skills required to
produce iOS apps. it's a very new area of expertise for everyone and
especially for blind programmers. the original developers of these games did
so with knowledge gained over years of programning knowledge and as a hobby we
shouldn't expect that to be the case always. there are all sorts of economics
and other factors which dictate what can be produced for free and when people
feel that they can charge for their efforts. you don't have to pay for
subscribing continuously in playing games on RSS servers. I questioned the
wisdom of setting prices for the games as high as they have. there is also the
problem of the asymmetry of having costs for one group of users and not for
another. however I don't question their right to have a charge for the games.
this money will go to support future app development and will likely see the
benefits of it in both RS games that are free on windows plus the additional
apps produced by kid friendly software it's much more complicated than people
with no programming experience think it is. also there are different economic's
governing the customer base and expectations of developers of games for sighted
people and developers of games for blind people. A high percentage of blind
people are unemployed which means there is less spare money available to pay
for entertainment I don't begrudge paying for any game but I pick and choose
what I pay for in terms of what really interests me I might not pay for your
game if I don't like it. that means less advertising and awareness of your game
that you might have if I had gotten and liked it it's a fine line to be drawn
for developers trying to set prices in a market that is heavily disadvantaged
economically

have to eat, too.
Honestly, this complaining sickens me and
makes me ashamed of our community.

it out.
I've not been an RSS games player, but this might be worth checking
out.

Here is the full text of the article:

RS Games shuts the box on only computer playing, goes Apples to
Apples with iOS Scott Davert yesterday 11:54 PM ET Earlier today, RS
Games announced on Twitter that there is now an iOS version of its
service available. The app, was developed with Kid Friendly Software
features many of the gestures and voice settings found in the
conventional Blindfold series of games.
While the app is free, not all games are free to play. The games that
are free include Slots, Blackjack, Pig, and Driedel. All other games
come with a free 7 day trial which starts the first time you launch
them, whether you play them right away or not. Once your trial expires
on a specific game, you can then continue to use it via an in-app
purchase. All other games that are currently on the RS Games Server
are available for purchase. The prices on games ranged from $2.99 for
a few of the games, up to $5.99 for monopoly. There are also bundles
available which allows you to save a few dollars. You can pay for
unlimited access to all games for $37.99. After downloading the app,
you will find more details under the upgrades button.

This news will have players excitedly downloading the games, the
developers encourage players to check out the User Guide under the
help button before trying to play.

The original developers were able to create the apps for free. Why couldn't
they have found blind people within the community willing to work for free to

Thank you for your response. I find it ironic that we blind people ask sighted
people for excess ability to things we cannot use, but yet we can't be bothered
to make a program that would be accessible in a way that sighted people most

I must say this is fantastic news and I have just downloaded the app and think
It is wonderful as it allows you to play against other people online and to see
who is available to play against.

Thanks for letting us all know about this and thank you and well done to the
developers.

I almost didn't read this because the subject was very vague. I took a chance
and when I saw that the link was to Blind Bargains, I checked it out.
I've not been an RSS games player, but this might be worth checking out.
Here is the full text of the article:

RS Games shuts the box on only computer playing, goes Apples to Apples with iOS
Scott Davert yesterday 11:54 PM ET

Earlier today, RS Games announced on Twitter that there is now an iOS version
of its service available. The app, was developed with Kid Friendly Software
features many of the gestures and voice settings found in the conventional
Blindfold series of games.
While the app is free, not all games are free to play. The games that are free
include Slots, Blackjack, Pig, and Driedel. All other games come with a free 7
day trial which starts the first time you launch them, whether you play them
right away or not. Once your trial expires on a specific game, you can then
continue to use it via an in-app purchase. All other games that are currently
on the RS Games Server are available for purchase. The prices on games ranged
from $2.99 for a few of the games, up to $5.99 for monopoly. There are also
bundles available which allows you to save a few dollars. You can pay for
unlimited access to all games for $37.99. After downloading the app, you will
find more details under the upgrades button.

2016-07-26 Thread Gordon
They don't rip you off because you're blind. I purchased the KNFB reader
which my daughter can do for free since she's sighted. But I was happy
to be able to purchase the KNFB reader for a fraction of what it was
back in 2010 which people were paying over $1,500 for that ability. RS
games on the iPhone is a convenience that one isn't required to purchase
unless they want to. But someone somewhere had to spend their time
bringing that to the IOS platform. I'm really happy we have this because
it gives me something to do when I'm stuck somewhere waiting for rides
to show up.

Quite ridiculous.
If I were sighted, I could find an app to play for free. People make these
apps, and rip you off because you are blind. How fair is that?
Also, kid friendly software games aren't worth it in the first place.
I guarantee you if they had partnered with anyone else, it would have been less.
I'll stick to playing for free on my mac, and those who choose can get ripped
off.
Cut the price by 75 percent, and we'll talk.

Hi list. While I agree with a lot of what is said here, one thing you guys need
to realize is RS games itself did not make that happen. They collaborated with
another developer, which is the main reason why they are charging to play some
of the games. As everybody knows, developing apps is all costs Lee and
time-consuming process. Having every thing free just like it is on Mac and
Windows doesn't help kid friendly software in anyway.

All other games come with
a free 7 day trial which starts the first time you launch them, whether
you play them right away or not. Once your trial expires on a specific
game, you can then continue to use it via an in-app purchase. All other
games that are currently on the RS Games Server are available for
purchase. The prices on games ranged from $2.99 for a few of the games, up
to $5.99 for monopoly. There are also bundles available which allows you
to save a few dollars. You can pay for unlimited access to all games for
$37.99. After downloading the app, you will find more details under the
 upgrades button.

This news will have players excitedly downloading the games, the
developers encourage players to check out the User Guide under the help
button before trying to play. From the limited testing I've done before
writing this article, the gestures appear to work well, and so do the
keyboard commands if quicknav is disabled. Unfortunately, even though
there is a setting that is designed for braille display users, none of the
spoken feedback comes up on the braille display during game play. This was
tested under 2 different iDevices with 2 different braille displays.
However, for a 1.0 release, it seems quite solid based on initial testing.

I have tried to get sighted people to play these games, but they do not like
the web interface, and find the lack of graphical user interface on the
computer offputting. Does the iPhone version have a graphical user interface?

This is mentioned in the article. It also mentions that for a one-time price of
$37 you have unlimited access to all games. We all have to make a living and
while I am not much into playing games, for somebody who is I understand this
is not a bad deal.
