RE: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-27 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi,

Are they play 1 or sonos 1 devices?

Only the sonos 1 or the latest of the sonos speakers have alexa built in,

So the play 1 and play 3& 5 don’t have alexa built in.

I did wonder if the amazon echo devices would allow you to use the sonos play
devices by alexa, but I’ve never been able to get it to work or figure it out.

So if your smaller speakers are sonos 1 then alexa will work for you.
Play 3 I don’t believe will.

Hello Simon
Thanks. I was looking for a Kindle book on Amazon site and came across a link
for my connections. Then there was an option to connect Sonos and it worked, so
I am not sure why it did not work via the app on my iPhone. I still have a
strange issue. My Sonos One and two Sonos Play3 speakers are setup in the same
group so that when streaming from my iPhone all will play. But the moment I ask
Alexa to play music only the Play One plays. When I then look at the Room
Settings on my PC or in the iPhone Sonos app the Play3 speakers are unselected.
I can not understand why this happens when I play via Alexa.

Then I think you may not have heard a Sonos system yet and while there a few
limitations, you can set up a Sonos One or some of th eother newer speakers
either as an Alexa or Google Home speaker. One limitation is that you can't use
features like Drop-In which you can do between actual Echo speakers.

Hi Robert,

Well, I have a Sonos Beam and love the sound for music and MLB games. However,
on our Amazon Fire TV, the Beam doesn’t sound as good by a long shot. I heard
about the ARC, the newest incarnation from Sonos, but I just purchased the Beam
last year, and I’m not ready to buy another speaker!

Hi,

Of course, how audio sounds is quite subjective.

I have both a Sonos system consisting of two play 5 speakers, a sub, and their
TV sounder. I also have two HomePods setup in a stereo pair.

To me, I actually prefer the sound of the HomePod stereo pair to all of these
Sonos speakers. Don’t get me wrong, the Sonos speakers sound really good. To me
the two HomePods sound even a bit better. I was really surprised by this. I
assumed that all of these Sonos speakers would blow the two small HomePods out
of the water. Not the case in my ears.

Re: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-26 Thread Robert Carter

2020-07-26 Thread Fanus Buys
Hello Sieghard

I agree about the Sonos speakers but is the Alexa option country specific
because when I try to set the Echo Dot to work with Sonos One I get an error
saying it could not connect to the server.

RE: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Simon A Fogarty
I don’t really think you can compare the home pod to an echo as they are for
different purposes,

More of a comparison would be the home pod and the sonos products which are
meant for music / media playing.
And now with the new sonos products having alexa built in thye do compare more
to apple home pods.

I think a lot depends on how it’s going to be used. I have 2 Home Pods and
love them .. but I generally use them for listening to music .. or playing my
Apple TV through them .. controlling my smart plugs and such .. I think they
have superior sound to the Echo .. that being said, there are a lot more things
that work with the Echo .. and if you are into all the trivia .. games .. etc.,
there are a ton of skills for the Echo.

So, as most things ..”it depends” ..

RE: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Jim Fettgather
Nothing compares to the actual audio produced by the Homepod, nothing.

Except maybe for the Amazon Studio Speaker.

The Amazon devices certainly have a few more skills, no doubt about it, but
Homepod sounds fantastic, far better than most Amazon devices.

Just an opinion.

RE: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Carolyn
I have a friend who has an Echo Show, and it reads boxes of crackers, stuff
like that for her. Also, some way or other, I think she can order on Amazon and
maybe from Wal-Mart with the thing.

I think the best one is a toss up between Amazon Echo and Google Home, I have

be better on the home pod but for me having the most features is most important.

Re: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Mike Arrigo
I have an echo and mine is working great. I have never used the Apple home pod
which is Apple's answer to the smart speaker, but every review that I have read
about it says that it does not have nearly as man features as the Amazon Echo
or Google Home, also, you can play Apple music on your amazon echo. I have an
Echo and a Google home and I have no interest in getting the Apple Home pod.

RE: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Alan Lemly
Again, it depends on the type of questions you're asking. I have access to
Alexa, Siri, and a Google Home and find that Alexa consistently answers the
type of questions I'm asking. But like all things, these digital assistants
have a learning curve and I've no doubt gotten better at phrasing my questions
with Alexa who I use most often. She seems much more adept at specifying
calendar dates when asked for the third Tuesday of a particular month for
example. And if I'm remembering the price of the Home Pods correctly, I suspect
a couple of them cost you between $600 and $700 which is not insignificant and
a lot more than my four Echo devices.

I have really given up on the echo for answering most questions. Google is
better in my opinion. And my Google mini only cost me 20 bucks. I wouldn’t
listen to Sirius music on it. But for questions, and other voice only
listening, it’s fine. Most people in the tech press got it all wrong when it
came to HomePod. They said it was just another smart speaker and it fell short
with regard to Alexa and Google.. But that was never apples point. They all
have their uses.

Also, the amazon echo. Now has HQ music. and you can add external speakers, if

Re: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
Another option is the google home which I own. My mom got it for me
as a gift. I like it because I can listen to music from youtube which
you can't do with the echo. I also use mine to answer questions, as
well as help me get the correct spelling of words when I'm composing
email messages. It all depends on how you are going to use your
preferred device. Music also sounds very nice through my google home.

Re: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Mary Otten
I totally agree with Peter. I have a pair of HomePods, and they totally blow
the echo away. But they really are music listening devices, or podcasts, or
playing your Apple TV, like Peter said. If you’re into all that other stuff,
the trivia games etc., then the HomePod isn’t what you want.

RE: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Peter Logan
I think a lot depends on how it’s going to be used. I have 2 Home Pods and
love them .. but I generally use them for listening to music .. or playing my
Apple TV through them .. controlling my smart plugs and such .. I think they
have superior sound to the Echo .. that being said, there are a lot more things
that work with the Echo .. and if you are into all the trivia .. games .. etc.,
there are a ton of skills for the Echo.

So, as most things ..”it depends” ..

Re: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-25 Thread Alan Lemly
Janet,

I thought Apple's digital assistant is Siri. I would strongly recommend you
stick with the Amazon Echo rather than investing in a Home Pod running Siri.
All of these devices and systems have issues from time to time but my opinion
is that the Amazon Echo is the best of the lot.
