Re: The old Flexy keyboard

I remember using Fleksy when I bought my first iPhone in 2012. I stopped using
it when it became less accessible. FlickType is an amazing keyboard.

RE: The old Flexy keyboard

2018-11-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
When Fleksy first came out Kosta was part of the development team and it
started out just as Flicktype as a Voiceover keyboard. However, over time it
changed a lot, I think first it was a paid app for $14.99 or something like
that, then later they dropped the price to $4.99 and eventually (and today)
it's free. This of course upset a lot of people since in the blind community it
appears that many don't understand simple economics and marketing, i.e. things
change, prices change and that is just how it is. If you buy an Instant Pot for
$149 at Best Buy and then a few weeks later the item goes on sale for $99 and a
week later it again goes up to $149 then that is how it is. Anyhow, Fleksy is
still around, it has all sorts of fancy features and essentially it works
similarly to Flicktype in terms of predicting what you want to type by the
pattern, but it's not nearly as accessible and easy to use any more as
Flicktype is.

So I'm a flick type user and absolutely love how it works. But I keep hearing

curious about what flexy was and how it's related to flick type.

Hi all,

In fleksy how can one return to other native keyboards? I could not do it
unless I deleted the keyboard from the general keyboard settings.
Also I don't see any way to add a word to the dictionary. I don't hear any
of the letter names.

Thanks for any tips.

Best,

Ioana

My problem with Fleksy is that when I turn voiceover off, sometimes, even
though I have speech feedback switched on, I get no speech at all. I did at
first, but then it stopped. I had reinstalled it after not getting the
speech feedback, and then I got it again, but then it stopped working again.
I truly wish I knew why.

I also updated, and noticed that Fleksy still does not work with voiceover
on. You have to turn voiceover off to get Fleksy to work at all. Then when I
went to activate the menu, if Lexi crashed about three times. I'm not
noticing much improvement.

Fleksy VO is spelled F l e k s y space v o. (As I first wrote it.) Try
searching on that. I've heard that the original Fleksy has had so many

Hi Donald,

Do you tap on search in the bottom right corner of the keyboard after you
enter your search term? Often an app won't show up in the search suggestions
unless you do this. If I just type Fleksy into the search field of the app
store on my iPhone and tap on the search button the first result is Fleksy
and the second is Fleksy VO.

Flexy--Unable to get past the update alert message

2013-12-03 Thread Helena Fehr
Hi, all! I have that same problem with my flexy; it asks me to update it, but
then when I click on that, it goes to the app-store, where the only choice I
can pick is to open it, and then when I click the open button, it just brings
me back to that same alert.
Speaking of things you can't get past, I've noticed that when you use DropBox
on the iPad, (when you first install it, at least), it brings you to the
welcome page, and there's something that says to learn more swipe, and if you
already have an account sign in, but when you double-tap it, it does absolutely
nothing, and I haven't found anything you can do about it, except get sighted
help, turn VoiceOver off, and get them to click on the sign in thing, and then
turn VoiceOver back on, and then it'll let you go to the sign in page where you
type in your email and password and can sign in like normal. Also, while you're
in DropBox at that welcome page, you cannot click the home-button three times
to turn voiceOver off; you have to either go to the home-screen, turn voiceover
off there and get the sighted person to access Dropbox and get you to the
sign-in page, or else hold down the home-button and tell seri to turn voiceOver
off, get the sighted person to get you to the sign in page, and then tell seri
to turn voiceover back on; either way, it's a huge hassle. I've actually gotten
a sighted person to watch me figure it out, and she could see the sign-in page
on DropBox there, but there was no way for me to get to it with voiceover on my
own. Anyhow, I hope there are some DropBox people on this list because I think
this should be fixed; everything else works fine on Dropbox. Also, this is with
the latest iPad, so I don't know what it does with my iPhone four. I might try
it just to see what happens; I think I remember trying it before, and I never
had problems with it on the iPhone 4. Does anyone else have this problem?

God Bless!!!
Helena

May The Lord Bless you and keep you; May his face radiate with joy because of
you' May He be gracious to you, show you His favour, and give you His peace.
(Numbers 6;24)

In Jesus' Name.
Amen

There is a great podcast about using Fleksy on Applevis.
It helped me a lot. The only concern I have with Fleksy is that it doesn't
support my native language. Hopefully in the near future they will add more
 languages.
So the more people can have the benefits of this great app.
The more practicing typing, the faster you'll type I think. :)

Man, is there absolutely no way we can revert flexy back to the way it was
originally to where we can double tap or tap the top of the screen to get to
the contact info?

I hate this 2 finger swipe up to get to the contact info. I am all the time
putting in random numbers or letters in my messages when trying to get to
the contact info with this swipe up crap.

Sorry if this message is coming across is rude, not my intent, it is just
that I like flexy, and I fly across the board with typing on it, it is just
swiping up to get to the contact info that is driving me nuts.

2013-02-24 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

why not start your swipe up in that area above the keyboard? This way, if you
don't perform the gesture correctly, you have no chance of miss typing letters.

I have e-mailed

the old gestures as an alternative, not a replacement, to the new ones.
They do listen to all feedback they receive. But like other app

new/existing features.

I suggest you do the same.

happens? you have to just delete them from the end after you get it

How to write don't using flexy? and other questions

2013-02-24 Thread Tara Prakash
dear all. How do you write don't or other words with apostrophe sign
such as what's that?

Secondly, What is the best way of sending emails using this program? I
once tried by typing some text and choosing email from the menu. What
I could understand was that the text I typed in flexie was put in the
subject line. In the box for message body, I could hear type with
Flexy but did not know how to use that feature. So your suggestions
for using this program for sending emails are required.

With regards and appreciation for responses.

Re: How to write don't using flexy? and other questions

2013-02-24 Thread Charles Dean
Hi,
To type contractions like done, or can't, just type them in. The word be typed
with the apostrophe. If it doesn't show up as the first word do a one finger
swipe down to go through the selections.

To type a an email, type your subject then do a two finger swipe down to add a
line and start typing your message body. When you have finished what you want
to email, do a two finger swipe up to enter the menu. Now select email. You can
now do any corrections and fill in the to field with the iphones normal
keyboard and send your email.

Debbi,

I wonder if you aren't trying too hard for accuracy when you type with
fleksy. That was my problem when I first got the app and it still
happens occasionally when I think too hard about where I'm tapping on
the screen.

Try simple sentences at first for practice. Type quickly not waiting
to hear the letters as you go. And don't get discouraged. Eventually
you'll get it and when you do I think you will love this app.

This is one of many reasons why i never ever ever will get Fleksy. What would i

pop up a keyboard with relevant signs already in place. I know i'm politically

RE: I'm Just Not Getting the Hang of Flexy.

2012-08-21 Thread Jon Pierson
Hi,
The other thing that hangs up some folks trying to use Fleksy for the first
time is the tendency to hold your finger on the letter you are aiming for.
This is natural if you have been used to touch typing since you really learn
to wait for that verbal VO confirmation. But with Fleksy, the final decision
is made based on the pattern you type so waiting for a response from the
iPhone may actually be getting in the way of the logic Fleksy is trying to
use.

Hi,
The short answer to the why would I question is that most people report a
three or even four-fold typing speed increase on average.
Now if you already type like a machine gun on steroids then you have made
your point.
It certainly isn't for everyone but judging by comments made on this list
over the past couple of months, it certainly is a time saver.

Hi, for what it's worth, I'm not using Fleksy as much as I thought I
would. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a neat program for those
who will use it to its advantages. However so far I haven't experienced
a significant increase in typing speed.

I've even made sure to retrain my muscle memory to just tap quickly
rather than tap and hold a bit to hear the letter spoken that I want,
but still no go. If anyone is having trouble, all I can do is recommend
more practice.

Cheers.

Re: I'm Just Not Getting the Hang of Flexy.

2012-08-21 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I guess I'm just a lot more pragmatic. I'm going to use whatever tools
make my life easier and make me more productive. I wouldn't have been
employed the last 20 plus years without products like JAWS. I doubt we'd
even have the accessibility on mainstream products today like we do on
the iPhone without some of the blindness only products that preceded it,
like Outspoken, the Braille 'n' Speak and so on. Furthermore, I think
the strides we've made in getting access to mainstream applications
isn't going to be derailed by the occasional innovative app that some
blind person or someone who is trying to help the blind iPhone user
drops into the App Store.

Since I can't predict the future, I'm also not going to make any
universal statements like I'll never use a particular product or an app.
Didn't I see someone say recently they'd never use a Kindle because they
needed sighted assistance to turn on speech when reading a book or
wouldn't get an Android phone because you needed sighted assistance to
install and configure a screen reader? What are these people left to do
now that neither one of these statements are true? What if Fleksy
catches on in the sighted community or gets incorporated into IOS?

I'm all for people taking a political stand and choosing to use or not
to use an app for any reason whatsoever. That's why we have so much
choice and have so many apps in the App Store. I'm just providing a
different opinion. I hope people feel it's perfectly OK to use or not to
use Fleksy or any other app out there.

The other thing that hangs up some folks trying to use Fleksy for the first

This is natural if you have been used to touch typing since you really learn
to wait for that verbal VO confirmation. But with Fleksy, the final decision
is made based on the pattern you type so waiting for a response from the
iPhone may actually be getting in the way of the logic Fleksy is trying to
 use.

 Debbi,

I wonder if you aren't trying too hard for accuracy when you type with
fleksy. That was my problem when I first got the app and it still happens
occasionally when I think too hard about where I'm tapping on the screen.

Try simple sentences at first for practice. Type quickly not waiting to hear
the letters as you go. And don't get discouraged. Eventually you'll get it
and when you do I think you will love this app.

the way Fleksy works, it is equally valuable to sighted typists. For
example, my partner can type about ten times faster using Fleksy as opposed
to the built in keyboard. Plus, many people find their fingers too large to
safely hit the right key. Fleksy makes this unimportant. So, I suppose I am
saying that, for once, the cart has come before the horse and that something

 Hallo Krister,

I don't generally join in these debates about specially generated apps
etc, but in the case of Fleksy, I have been tempted. The simple fact is that
the way Fleksy works, it is equally valuable to sighted typists. For
example, my partner can type about ten times faster using Fleksy as opposed
to the built in keyboard. Plus, many people find their fingers too large to
safely hit the right key. Fleksy makes this unimportant. So, I suppose I am
saying that, for once, the cart has come before the horse and that something
developed with the VIP community in mind, might actually find a much greater
 mainstream market.

I think we may well see Fleksy being bought by Apple for inclusion into
 its IOS.

I have come to the conclusion that I simply have not practiced typing enough

phone. Ive gotten somewhat better but I', still not a proficient typist on
the phone. I think that as I force myself to practice more on the phone my
 skills on Fleksy will improve.

Hi Richard,
I had a bit of a problem with typing accuracy with Fleksy when I started out.
First off, let me ask you. How fast are you typing with Fleksy? You don't have
to answer me. Just think about it. Sometimes I find that I get some words
consistently right and other words consistently wrong. When I find one of these
words, I stop what I'm doing and practice typing out that word. Sometimes I
find I just need to be a little less exaggerated when I type that word. Or I'll
slow gown typing when I get to that word. My advice to you is to open Fleksy
when you have some time and practice. Try bigger words first. Delightful.
Practices. Exaggerate. Simplified. Mastery. Geography. These are just some
examples. As you get better with these words, try typing smaller sentences. Can
I do that? How is the weather? Type more slowly than you were typing before,
since you'll be dealing with smaller words which take more accuracy to get.
Sometimes typing just a little bit slower can make all the difference
Hope that helps,

For the person asking about smile wink. If you hold your finger on the

Find the colon, above the I, I believe, then lift your finger to type the
colon. If you wanted the semicolon for a wink, you'll need to flick down.
Repeat the process to find the parenthesis. Lol, remember the difference

Hello. At one time, I had the same problem you are currently having. Here
are a few tips:
1. Know the qwerty keyboard. Before using Fleksy, you should have a good
mental picture of where everything is on the qwerty keyboard.
2. Type with your index fingers. It does not work very well to type
exactly like you would on a qwerty keyboard. I have found that the most
productive and accurate way for me to use fleksy is to type with my index
fingers.

I really like Fleksy also, and I really like the button in the lower right

finger to get the new line it put a period on the end of the word I just
typed. Sometimes I did not want the period as I had put in a comma or a
colon. Has anyone noticed this? Perhaps it is my fingers!

On another note, how do you do a wink and a smile with punctuation! Curious

RE: I'm Just Not Getting the Hang of Flexy.

2012-08-21 Thread Louise Redsull
Hi Krister,
I understand the points you are making but do feel there is a place for both
mainstream and specialist apps. I agree all IPhone users need to get to
grips with the standard keyboard but honestly feel if a specialist app can
massively increase your productivity then that can't be a bad thing. I like
to have both mainstream and specialist apps and feel there is space for
both. Obveously it is a personal choice if you wish to purchase mainstream
or more specialist apps.

Hi,
This is one of many reasons why i never ever ever will get Fleksy. What
would i want it for when there's an adequate keyboard already present and
one that can adapt to the situations, so if there's an email, to type the
adress, there will pop up a keyboard with relevant signs already in place. I
know i'm politically incorrect but i say it anyway, why do i want a special
solution because i'm blind? And before anyone says it, it's not the apps
themselves i'm afraid of, they're there in the app store for grabbing, if
you want 'em get 'em, what i'm afraid of is the demand it brings. When we
get enough special solutions to do all kinds of things for us, we won't ever
want to investigate what's already in the store, because it doesn't do what
the blind require, and all of a sudden we're back in the hands of Freedom
Science fiction, GW Micro, Sendero and the other companies who sell badly
programmed solutions for a humongous price, and that's what i wanted to
avoid when i first got the IPhone.
And down from his soap box he slithers.

Re: I'm Just Not Getting the Hang of Flexy.

2012-08-21 Thread Michelle McQuigge
In my experience with this app, I've found Rose is right on the money
with her excellent advice. Establishing a good rhythm was crucial to
my breakthrough with Fleksy. Go too slowly and you're inclined to
confuse it. Go too fast and taps won't register properly. Getting into
a good groove enabled me to figure out how forceful the program needed
my taps to be. Once I figured out what it needed, I could then pick up
my own pace without loss of productivity.
I also think I had an advantage due to the fact that I do all my
typing with my thumbs (a holdover from the old Nokia phone days). A
friend of mine was having great difficulty with Fleksy as he typed
with a sort of hunt-and-peck approach involving his index fingers.
Once I had him hold the phone in portrait position and do nice firm
taps with his thumbs, the breakthrough was almost instantaneous. Like
Rose and me, I believe he found the larger words easier to master
first.

I hope this helps Debbie and all others struggling to come to grips
with this app. For those in search of a way to boost your typing
speed, it really is tremendously innovative. For those who aren't on
board with Fleksy for either ideological or practical reasons, more
power to you. :)

All the best,
Michelle

I'm not a big fan of the term blind Ghetto. With the trouble blind
people have finding employment, I don't think we should use disparaging
terms to label products and applications that could make people more
competitive in the market place. Which is more ghetto like, being
unemployed or under employed or using an product or application that
allows you to compete with our sighted peers?

Don't get me wrong. I'm absolutely all for incorporating accessibility
into main stream products and being able to use off the shelf products.
They're generally cheaper and usually have more features in a more
timely fashion. This doesn't mean that we're to the point though where a
product or application designed with the blind in mind still isn't
needed to fill the gap between the accessibility we have with a main
stream product and the ease of use a blind user needs.

I also don't think it's an either or situation. I think we can push for
greater and greater accessibility in mainstream products while still
taking advantage of products and applications developed with the blind
in mind. If this weren't the case, we wouldn't be in the situation we're
in now where we're buying off the shelf PC's and cell phones.

I can only think of a handful of apps on the iPhone that we talk about
on this list that were developed for the blind, so I think it's a bit of
an exaggeration to say things like here we are, demanding more and more
specialist products and yet another device full of special apps.

It is fun to type the Fleksy way.

I was looking around for the ampersand sign and came across the (at)
shortcut. Flicking down on the (at) brings up a bunch of email suggestions
like @gmail, or @yahoo. That is pretty cool!

I was also successful in doing the smile wink via punctuation.

I like that there is the option to use the lower right button for new line.

One question I have is, how do I enter a space. For example, when I entered
the symbol, I noticed there was no space between it and the following
word.

Anyway, I just wanted to add in my positive comments on this app. I'm
pleased more than I expected. I had fast fun composing a Facebook status

I use it in portrait mode. I just estimate where the keys are. I guess, to
practice, try using the regular keyboard to get use to where the keys are.

I really like Fleksy also, and I really like the button in the lower right

finger to get the new line it put a period on the end of the word I just
typed. Sometimes I did not want the period as I had put in a comma or a

Hello. At one time, I had the same problem you are currently
having. Here are a few tips:
1. Know the qwerty keyboard. Before using Fleksy, you should
have a good mental picture of where everything is on the qwerty
keyboard.
2. Type with your index fingers. It does not work very well to
type exactly like you would on a qwerty keyboard. I have found
that the most productive and accurate way for me to use fleksy is
to type with my index fingers.

Try roaming around the keyboard first so that you get used to how tall the

flexy and keyboard shortcuts

2012-07-15 Thread Christina
Hi all,

I think I'm going to purchase this app. :) I have a question though. I have
some keyboard shortcuts entered into my iPhone. I use these quite a bit,
especially when texting. I was just wondering if flexy ignores them. I'm
assuming they do since they are not in the dictionary. I was just curious.
This is not a make or break for me. I just wanted to know how that would play
out.

Thanks,
Christina C.

Hi,
Maybe i'm wrong and the problem is smaller than i think, but your suggestion
would mean that blind folks who want to use Fleksy as an alternative
keyboard for some reason or other would be more or less forced to commit an
action that could be seen as illegal and that surely would void all
warrantees from Apple, would we really want that kind of solution?
I don't know how jailbreaking is seen in the scandinavian countries, but i
for one don't want to jailbreak my iphone despite all the nifty features i
could get by doing so. I don't think it's worth the risk if something
breaks... At least not until my warranty is out.

Re: Otterbox again and nothing about Thoughts on Flexy being integrated as a keyboard option on IOS

2012-07-14 Thread Rob Harris
Very wise about the address just going to change subject!

But like I said about a day ago, I just had the Otterbox Impact, and did
get the phone in that with a used and flaky speed dots cover and did it
quite easy and it works a treat now. so whoever recommended that case,
I'll endorse it too.

I had already bought my Otterbox by the time I heard about Speed Dots, We
struggled to get the phone with the screen protector it already had and I
don't want to try to do another especially since I hear there are some
fitting problem.

Birthday is tomorrow, some could send me one already equipped! Laughing
cause I know it would never happen, especially since I won't post my address
online.

You bring up an excellent point. All this talk about alternate keyboards and
alternate methods of typing makes me glad that I have the speed Dot's screen
protector on my phone because I can type very fast with it. Yes, right now I
am dictating. However when I compare how fast I type compared to how fast

2012-07-14 Thread Christina
Hmmm, I don't personally like a solution that would require a jail break.
However, you bring up a thought for me. Flexy has something on their
instructions page describing something about offering their keyboard to
developers to use within their app. So, maybe there is a developer out there
that might have an accessible messaging/texting app where the flexy keyboard
can be used. That's just a thought. Maybe I completely misunderstood that
portion of the flexy instructions though. LOL! Things tend to go way over my
head.

Hi reggie all I do is as follows.

First I type out my message and if I want to respond to a particular message I
will just copy it and paste it in and click on send. However if I want to
create a email brand new I type out the message and then click on the favorite
of this group and the message it ready to be sent so all I do is click send. If
you do not see send that would mean the groups email address as you typed it
May be wrong. I have no problem sending emails now. I love this program.

RE: Thoughts on Flexy being integrated as a keyboard option on IOS

2012-07-14 Thread Louise Redsull
Hi,
I totally understand what you're saying. However, I'm not advocating not to
fight for apple to integrate other keyboards into the IOS. However, if they
are not going to do that I don't see an issue in someone creating a work
around as that's all most jailbreak tweaks are. It's up to you as a user if
you want to use it or not but it would be better than having nothing at all.

Louise.

Hi,
Maybe i'm wrong and the problem is smaller than i think, but your suggestion
would mean that blind folks who want to use Fleksy as an alternative
keyboard for some reason or other would be more or less forced to commit an
action that could be seen as illegal and that surely would void all
warrantees from Apple, would we really want that kind of solution?
I don't know how jailbreaking is seen in the scandinavian countries, but i
for one don't want to jailbreak my iphone despite all the nifty features i
could get by doing so. I don't think it's worth the risk if something
breaks... At least not until my warranty is out.
