Hi, It's worth noting that brailliant BI and Focus Blue are supported with
executive leather products cases for better portability and protection than any
of the stock cases which ship with the units. I haven't read that there's a
case for the braille edge but there ott to be.

I will really recommend a display with a good bag. The focus can fell out and
be harmed. There are problems with the braille cells. Apple has also created
a problem that makes focus a pain. You can only go to next line with the
button in the right edge of the display. If you read with your right hand,
and will use the left for going to new line it is not possible at the moment.
Again I am not impressed with the cells.

I have always used 40 cells display. I have been told that it is the best
with a long display. I have figured out, that 40 cells maybe is to long a
display. It can be an advantage in a few situations, but if you are reading
much as I am, I would really concider a shorter display. I think something
about 24 cells would be a great length for a braille display.

There are more controls on the Edge than the Focus 40 for some types

Hello Scott,

What is the difference between Focus 40 blue and Braille edge in terms of their

Hello.
As others have said, it depends on what exactly you want the display
to do and what functionality is important to you. If having something
exclusively for the iPhone is all you're looking for, certainly I'd
say the Focus 40 Blue may be the way to go. But if you want to be able
to read books without having to connect to your phone, or if you want
to have any internal functionality, the Edge will probably be your
best bet. Also, HIMS will soon be releasing an update to the Edge,
which will incorperate some cool new functionality that I don't think
I'm permited to talk about publicly.

Where do you get the New Kid Braille display?

verse of the Week

For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we
can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
   --Ephesians 2:10, NLT

Lord Jesus, you satisfy the deepest longing of our heart and you feed us
with the finest of wheat (Psalm 81:16). Fill me with gratitude and give me a
generous heart that I may freely share with others what you have given to
me.
Psalm 27:1-4, 11-14
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the
stronghold of my life;  of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When evildoers assail me, uttering slanders against me, my adversaries and
foes, they shall stumble and fall.
3 Though a host encamp against me, my heart shall not fear;  though war
arise against me, yet I will be confident.
4 One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after;  that I may
dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty
of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.
11 Teach me your way, O LORD; and lead me on a level path because of my
enemies.
12 Give me not up to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have
risen against me, and they breathe out violence.
13 I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the
living!
14 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage;  yes, wait
for the LORD!

re: iPhone 5 and Braille display question.

2013-05-25 Thread Ahmed Khater

Hello Scott,

What is the difference between Focus 40 blue and Braille edge in terms of their functions as braille displays exclusively for
iPhone? In other words, What gives the Focus 40 blue precedence over the Braille Edge as a preferred braille display for the
iPhone? This is very 9interesting for me to know in order to transfer this knowledge to people in my area about the proper braille
display to choose for those interested in using their iPhone with a braille display.

Thanks a million.

2013-05-25 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi Jim.

I would wait a little, and buy a brailliant, I have the 32 cells that is a
great display, it has a bug, that I have heard would be solved in the near
future.

I will really recommend a display with a good bag. The focus can fell out and
be harmed. There are problems with the braille cells. Apple has also created a
problem that makes focus a pain. You can only go to next line with the button
in the right edge of the display. If you read with your right hand, and will
use the left for going to new line it is not possible at the moment. Again I am
not impressed with the cells.

I have always used 40 cells display. I have been told that it is the best with
a long display. I have figured out, that 40 cells maybe is to long a display.
It can be an advantage in a few situations, but if you are reading much as I
am, I would really concider a shorter display. I think something about 24 cells
would be a great length for a braille display.

Cheers Annie.

2013-05-25 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi Annie. I just ordered a Focus 40 Blue and am a bit worried about what
you say below. Do you know if this is affecting all units or only a few?
I guess what I'm wondering is if this is a general design flaw, or
something seen only with a few units. From what I've seen about the
Focus 40 Blue, it's seems rather nice and so far, from my limited use, I
like the way the dots feel. I'm not a huge fan of Freedom Scientific,
but at least on the surface, it looks like they have done this one
right. I know it's too soon to tell, but I also am wondering if you or
anyone else has any ideas of repair percentages and the issues
associated with warranty issues with Freedom. I realize of course that
this strays off topic from an iOS discussion, so if it gets too involved
as things tend to do, we can certainly take this off list.

Re: iPhone 5 and Braille display question.

2013-05-25 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi Raul.

I have a focus that has a problem with a cell not all the time but sometimes,
it is difficult to solve, because if you have to change 1 cell you will have to
change 20. I do not know if there has been improvements in the last year, I
think so. The problem apple has made is that you can not use the rocker
navigators in every side of the display to go to the next braille line, you
could do that in earlier versions of IOS, now you can only use the little
button in the right side of the display. You can change it if you are one of
the jailbreakers and get the great functionality back.

Cheers Annie.

Hi Annie. I just ordered a Focus 40 Blue and am a bit worried about what you
say below. Do you know if this is affecting all units or only a few? I guess
what I'm wondering is if this is a general design flaw, or something seen
only with a few units. From what I've seen about the Focus 40 Blue, it's
seems rather nice and so far, from my limited use, I like the way the dots
feel. I'm not a huge fan of Freedom Scientific, but at least on the surface,
it looks like they have done this one right. I know it's too soon to tell,
but I also am wondering if you or anyone else has any ideas of repair
percentages and the issues associated with warranty issues with Freedom. I
realize of course that this strays off topic from an iOS discussion, so if it
gets too involved as things tend to do, we can certainly take this off list.

I will really recommend a display with a good bag. The focus can fell out
and be harmed. There are problems with the braille cells. Apple has also
created a problem that makes focus a pain. You can only go to next line with
the button in the right edge of the display. If you read with your right
hand, and will use the left for going to new line it is not possible at the
moment.

I have always liked Humanware displays Myself but maybe that is because I used

Re: iPhone 5 and Braille display question.

2013-05-24 Thread Scott Davert

Check out the Braille Edge from HIMS. The only advantage it has over some
others is the built in notepad function. If you want to be able to jot

If having the notepad feature isn't important to you, then I'd go with the

Re: iPhone 5 and Braille display question.

2013-05-23 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, Many of us will tell you our preference. Personally I find that a bit
meaningless. Cells and controls that feel nice to me may not be at all
comfortable to you. I strongly suggest you try to feel a few braille displays
and decide for yourself which feel good to you and which don't. Not an easy
task, but considering what you're paying it would be worth your while hunting
for some demo units.

The new brailliant BI and Brailleedge devices are real workhorses. The old
focus blue was alright although I am not a fan of the focus control surface or
cells myself. I've only trained on one new focus blue for a client and the
dots failed last month. Can't go by one in all fairness but for the price i'm
keeping an eye out to see if I notice a trend.

Avoid the alva bc640. They are incredibly breakable I've had four or 6 of them
fail on clients in the last three years or so. In fact, they were all the rage
here when they were the only modern thing to be funded, but as soon as you
could get a focus blue or a brailliant BI, no one here would authorize them any
more and the number of alvas I see has dropped right off the bottom of the map.

Best,

Re: iPhone 5 and Braille display question.

2013-05-23 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi Cait,

Focus bue should be alright on a mac if you use that platform. It works on
window-eyes but with very limitted functionality. If using window-eyes you
would be better off with a brailliant BI or a Braille Edge. If using NVDA, it
has native support for focus blue and brailliant BI, but I don't know about the
brailleedge.

If you have specific questions about compatibility you can email me off list
and I'll find out.

Best,

Erik Burggraaf

Do you have a pc or a mac that you use with this display as well as the i

you do? I'm not a jaw user is why I'm asking.
thanks for any input. You can answer off list if you want.

I have the Focus 40 Blue and truly love it. The braille is very easy
to feel and the unit is quite lightweight as well. As Raul said, it is
certainly up to you which one you decide upon, since many of the
 hotkeys are the same.

Hi, since the hot keys are pretty much the same when using the iPhone or
more specifically, iOS, it's up to you on which one you get based on
your own preference and available money and other factors like who is
the manufacturer. Humanware Brailliant and Freedom Scientific Focus 40
Blue are two good choices. There are others, like the HIMS Braille Edge
and the handytech Easy Braille as well. I'm getting the Focus 40 Blue in
the next couple of weeks and am looking forward to it.
