Re: Anyone tried the Envision Eli QR label reading system?

2017-08-03 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
hi Robin,
I do use the pen friend, and the sort of things it's useful for, which would
also apply to this app plus Q are codes, would be to label, for example,
containers in your freezer with information about what they contain. I also use
a lot of spices in my kitchen, I decant them into little jars, so I labelled
them and can easily find out which is which. The advantage is that you can feel
the label unlike a barcode.
hope this helps, Sandy

I like the bluetooth keyboard Anker puts out. Inexpensive, but good
action on the keys and fairly compact. It doesn't come with its own
case, so you may want to get one if you want to take it places.

How small is small?
I just got the Logitech K480. It can connect to three separate devices
including Windows or Android. There is a dial to select the device you want.
It is under $30 at Amazon.
There is a nice carrying case that is about $20.

I used to recommend the AmazonBasics, but it hasn't been available for 6 months
and looks unlikely to come back.

RE: Headphone Help

2017-08-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
That makes no difference. I think sometimes people think that just because a
headset uses Bluetooth 4.0 or 4.1 they are better, have less lag or whatever. I
can guaranty from personal experience that this is not the case because a year
or so ago I purchased an expensive (about $200) set of Plantronics Backbeat
Sense headphones. They used Bluetooth 4.1 and sounded great, but the lag was so
bag that they were unuseable with Voiceover. I have had many bluetooth
espeakers, single earpieces and stereo headsets over the last 8 years and none
was as bad as these. My 5-year old Outdoor Tech stereo headset which uses
Bluetooth 2.1 is almost as good as anything I have ever had and I definitely
found out that what bluetooth version a manufacturer uses means very little.
I'll never buy a bluetooth headset, earpiece or speaker if there isn't a return
policy which allows me to return it if I'm not satisfied with it.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: Headphone Help

2017-08-03 Thread Kelby Carlson
I have wondered about this to be honest. I got a speaker for Christmas
several years ago so I'm sure it doesn't use 4.1, and maybe not even
4.0. But there is basically no lag and has pretty good sound for how
small it is. You don't get the really good stereo sound, but it can
fill a room. (For reference it is the Soundbrick Plus.)

I haven't heard any major reports about the iPhone 7 speaker, where did you

I am just hoping the 8 doesn't have as many issues as I heard people had with
the 7 Plus. With the speaker not working after a while and all.

I'm pretty sure I heard that larger-capacity iPod touches were just released. I

The Gmail app

2017-08-03 Thread Hope Paulos
Hi all. Can someone who has the Gmail app please tell me how to compose a new
message? I have downloaded the app, and it seems relatively accessible… The
only issues I am having our deleting messages, I find that I have to go into
the message itself before I have the delete button… It doesn't seem as easy as
for looking up like the native mail app… The other issue I'm having is I cannot
find a compose button… If someone could help me, it would be greatly
appreciated.

Hope Paulos

Re: The Gmail app

2017-08-03 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hello, just an idea, if no one can answer your question, you can download the
free Microsoft Outlook app, set up your Gmail account with it, and you will
sure see the compose button, you can also delete a message without opening it
thanks to some nice custom actions in the message list, note no Office 365
subscription required to use Outlook, in fact no Microsoft account is required
at all.

Hello, yes there are now just 32 GB and 128 GB iPod Touch models available, no
news on iPad Mini but my prediction is they will go away as the entry level 9.7
inch iPad gains popularity.

Re: The Gmail app

2017-08-03 Thread Michael Feir
I'm writing this in the Gmail app itself. Near the bottom of messages like
yours you'll find options to replay. Just keep flicking right at the end of
the message and you'll find them. Also, to compose a brand new message from
sscratch, look near the bottom right of the screen and you'll find a
"compose" button. Double-tap it and a form will appear allowing you to
compose an email. I've found the Gmail app to be a better choice for me
regarding email on iOS. With the native Mail app included in iOS, you can't
do things like empty your spam folder. Gmail isn't perfect but they are
aware of blind users.

A big issue with Gmail in general on the iPhone, whether it's the web
version or the app, is braille screen input does not work when writing a

Re: iPad mini

2017-08-03 Thread Richard Turner

the 128 gb 6th generation came out when the 6 came out, so it isn't new.
Unless, they have released a 256 without making a fuss.
I bought the 128 iPod 6 when it first came out.

Re: iPad mini

2017-08-03 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hello, sorry, those storage options are not new, but the 32 GB is now the
baseline and not the 16 GB which has been discontinued. The 64 GB storage
option is also discontinued hence the only two storage options now, 32 GB
(baseline) and 128 GB.

it's not small, but i like the matias bluetooth keyboard. It is a full size
keyboard, including numpad. It does not fold. It looks a lot like the Apple

I like the bluetooth keyboard Anker puts out. Inexpensive, but good
action on the keys and fairly compact. It doesn't come with its own
case, so you may want to get one if you want to take it places.

While I think both the Verizon Wireless and Sprint iOS apps are better, the My

Re: My ATT app

2017-08-03 Thread Vicky Collins
I use it as well. And, for the most part, I've been able to do
whatever I wanted, meaning such things as viewing and paying my
bill and checking my data usage for examples. I did have a
problem two or three months ago when I tried to change my data
plan through the app, as I had to get sighted assistance to tap
on one of the buttons. But, the app is often updated, so things
may have changed recently.

Question about smart scales

2017-08-03 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi all,

I was looking into the possibility of getting a smart scale. Mainly for easy
accessible track' of weight over time.
I don't really want something very fancy and saw already some that are around
40 cad on amazon.
However I'd like to know about any experiences with the accessibility of the
app and accuracy.
Any recommendations are very welcome.

Best,

Ioana

Huawei came really close to selling as many phones as Apple - CNET

2017-08-03 Thread M. Taylor
CNET News - Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 12:12 AM
Huawei came really close to selling as many phones as Apple - CNET

Huawei's phone sales rose 20 percent year over year in the second quarter.
César Salza/CNET
The gap in global phone sales between Apple and Huawei is smaller than ever.
Apple, the world's No. 2 phone seller by volume, sold 41 million iPhones in
the second quarter. Huawei, the No. 3 global phone brand thanks to its
popularity in China and Europe, sold 38.5 million phones during the same
period, Counterpoint Research said Tuesday.
Huawei's numbers are up 20 percent from the same quarter last year, while
Apple's year-on-year growth was 2 percent. Of course, the Cupertino,
California-based company has little to worry about. Though it sells fewer
phones than Samsung and may eventually fall behind Huawei, it has always
topped profit share. In 2016, Apple accounted for just under 80 percent of
all smartphone profits.
"Apple is the most profitable smartphone brand on the planet with highest
brand equity, however, it is in a conundrum," Counterpoint's Neil Shah told
CNET. Apple is losing ground in China, while brands like Huawei and Oppo are
becoming more popular. "Apple has been losing revenues in China since (the
2014) iPhone 6 (and) 6Plus launch, which was the peak for Apple in China,"
he said.
Oppo and Xiaomi, two other Chinese phone giants, also grew considerably. The
former sold 30.5 million phones in the second quarter, a 33 percent rise,
while the latter's 23.3 million was a 60 percent increase over the prior
year.
Samsung is still king though, with 80.4 million in phone sales in the
quarter. LG, its South Korean competitor, sold 13.3 million phones, 600,000
fewer than in the same quarter last year.

Looking for a new phone this summer? Wait. USA Today

2017-08-03 Thread M. Taylor
Looking for a new phone this summer? Wait.
By Eli Blumenthal , USA TODAY
Students look at an iPhone at the Apple Store in the Taipei 101 skyscraper
in Taipei, Taiwan. (Photo: David Chang, EPA) NEW YORK ' With summer and
back-to-school sales fully underway, you may be tempted to by some of the
deals buy a new phone. Wireless carriers, electronic retailers'and phone
makers have come out with various promotions to lure summer shoppers,
offering heavy discounts and buy-one-get-one-free deals. While on the
surface they seem great,'don't be fooled. With the new Galaxy Note 8 set to
be announced later this month and potentially three new iPhones on tap for
September , now is probably the worst time of the year to buy a new phone.
'It is a terrible time to buy a new phone when you know new options are
being brought to the table in a month,' says Avi Greengart, research
director for platforms and devices at market researcher GlobalData. "Even if
you have no desire to buy a new iPhone, there are also new Android phones
coming," says Greengart. In addition to the aforementioned new Galaxy Note
and iPhones, rumors strongly suggest LG and Google are planning new devices
for the fall. Then'there are the price drops that follow new releases,
creating a better deal for those who don't want or need'the latest and
greatest. If history is any indication, many of today's'top phones will see
their prices lowered when these new big name devices come out. In the case
of the iPhone, last year's iPhone 7 would presumably drop to the cost of the
iPhone 6S, allowing you to get a better deal on what is arguably a better
phone (missing headphone jack notwithstanding). And the price drops and
promotions are bound to happen regardless on if you are on Team iPhone or
Team Android. As with recent years,'the promos are expected to be
particularly strong around the launch of the new iPhone, which Apple has
historically'announced during the first few weeks of September. The Galaxy
S8, Greengart notes, may be one such device that will see better deals as
carriers and Samsung may look to "raise the profile of a phone that was
launched several months ago that is still quite spectacular. Other
impressive Android phones, such as the HTC U11, may also see better deals
available as the marketplace refreshes. If you are specifically looking to
buy an iPhone 'you have to hold tight,' says Roger Entner, an analyst at
Recon Analytics. What about those with a busted phone that needs to be
replaced as soon as possible? "Get a refurbished phone," says Entner, "with
the expectation that you would probably lose $100 when you trade it in
again" for the new device. A refurbished 16GB'iPhone 6S phone generally
ranges between $319 at Best Buy and Gazelle to $449 directly from Apple,
with other options available from Amazon, eBay and others. Older models are
even cheaper. You may not even lose that much money on the trade-in, as
promotions around the iPhone are increasingly intense among the wireless
carriers. "When the new iPhone comes out there will be intense
competition'to capture iPhone customers, and they will make it in all
likelihood'very attractive for customers to trade in their existing iPhone.
Last year, all four major wireless carriers offered a free iPhone 7 to those
willing to trade in their iPhone 6 or 6S (assuming the older devices were in
good, working condition), with hundreds of dollars in'credits being offered
to those trading in various Android phones or even older iPhone models. "In
all likelihood, they will pay more the iPhone than they should," says
Entner. "And that's the opportunity'for the consumer. Follow Eli Blumenthal

Seeking Suggestions for a good iOS Package Tracking App

2017-08-03 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I would appreciate any suggestions you may have for a good iOS package
tracking app that can track UPS, USPS, FedEX, etc. I would like the app to
offer push notifications so I can tell when the package reaches various
stages in the shipping process. The app can either be free or paid, it does
not matter as long as it is VoiceOver accessible and easy-to-use.

Thank you,

Mark

Hi Mark and all,

I use parcel track.

Used to use

parcel

but think parcel track may be slightly more accurate with reporting scans.

RE: Keyboards for iPhone.

2017-08-03 Thread upliftfm
Hi
I've just purchased the IClever foldable keyboard and it's good. It pairs well,
has no lag that I can see. It's easy to use and is about £15 at present on
sale. No numpad. Folds to small. Comes with pouch. The backlit version is twice
the price and does not last long battery wise.

it's not small, but i like the matias bluetooth keyboard. It is a full size
keyboard, including numpad. It does not fold. It looks a lot like the Apple
keyboard. It can pair to 4 devices.
