Re: best epub reader app for I Phone and accessibility?

2013-03-28 Thread Mario Barbuto

  Hi Dan,

I guess Gutemberg project uses the so-called "social DRM", out of
copyright protection.
For this kind of ebooks the Apple free downloadable app "Ibooks"
could be suitable enough, but only in case of simple contents books,
I mean especially novels and litterature books in general.
In short, all that books readable almost sequentially from start to
end, from top to bottom.

Unfortunately, in case you need reading more complex books, the
Ibooks app often fails, not showing you all the features of the book.
I'm mainly thinking of books filled with tables, footnotes, indexes
with nested items, headings, meaningful images, refeences and so on.
Ibooks seems not to recognize tables and consequently they cannot be
red according to their structure, by column or by line, but just
sequentially line per line.
The text description tags of images, when present, are ignored as
well as nested paragraphs in an index.
Setting the VO rotor in navigation by headings you are not allowed to
jump to next or previous heading by the usual one finger down or up
sliding gesture.

I have found more suitable to reading Epub format, but not copyright
protected ebooks, the app called "Ilike2Read", downloadable not for
free, despite I did not find a complete accessible and usable app
yet, capable of taking advantage of all the Ebooks navigation features.
Not to mention Ebooks Adobe DRM protected that are almost
inaccessible to VoiceOver in Iphone and other apple devices.
Only the "OverDrive" app seems dealing a little with that kind of
books, but with bunch of shortcomings.

Of course, this is just my personal experience,
hoping it could help.

Mario.

Re: Opening a dropbox file in access note

  Hi Kimber,

I guess you have to open the .txt file in DropBox and then push the
button "Export". You should see the AccessNote option listed as one
of the export choicies.
But this is so easy that I guess you are facing some more complex
trouble I cannot figure out.

I hope my reminder could help you.

Warmly,

Mario.

Re: Opening a dropbox file in access note

2013-04-12 Thread Mario Barbuto

  Hi Kimber,

Usually I do these steps:

1) I run DropBox app;
2) I locate the folder where the .txt file is;
3) I click on the folder name to show its file list;
4) I locate and click the .txt file I wish to open;
5) after it's opened, in the low part of the screen I will find four
buttons. One of them is "Export", I guess the third.

6) I click the "Export" button;
7) from the opened menu, I click "Open in";
8) I will see the list of apps to edit a .txt files;
9) one of that apps is "accessNote";
10 I click on it and I will have the file in the AccessNote app, I
guess in edit mode.

I hope it could help you too.

Warmly,

Mario.

RE:Re: transfering contacts from nokia to iPhone?

2013-04-18 Thread Mario Barbuto
  Hello Simon,

about two years ago I did the following:

1) select all contacts on Nokia and copy them in the Nokia mass storage

2) connect the Nokia phone to a Windows computer as mass storage

3) locate into the Nokia phone the folder where your contacts have been copied
(something like "other/contacts"

4) select and copy all contacts files .vcf into an empty folder on the computer

5) pack all of them into a single file with extension .vcf by issuing the Dos
command: copy *.vcf allcontacts.vcf/B

6) send the allcontacts.vcf file as attachment to the iphone email account

7) download the mails into the iphone

8) locate and open the message with the allcontacts.vcf file attached to

9) open the .vcf file from inside the message and the iphone will ask if you
want to add the contacts contained in it to yours.

Some other friends of mine successfully experienced this method too.

I hope it will help.

Mario.

Good morning, Sarah.
Sadly, the answer to your question is a no.
Clearly, they can make a keyboard equivalent, so
I'm not quite sure why they have yet to create a
braille display keyboard equivalent. Perhaps in iOS 7? LOL.
Actually, I think Apple has a bit more of a
serious issue to work on in that they need to
fix the way VoiceOver no longer handles headings
properly, so this may get put on the back burner
for awhile. Maybe, and this is a crazy idea I have, they could fix both. LOL.

Cheers from the big Apple,
Scott

Re: Some more Braille questions.

2013-03-26 Thread Mario Barbuto

  Hi Caleb,

thank you for your good work.
In my opinion Brailletouch represents the most
flexible aproach to having a virtual Braille keyboard onscreen.
Nontheless I suppose Brailletouch users are
expecting some useful improvements such as:

- various braille table implementation, according
to european/national litterary and computer braille codes;

- some simple editing function allowing to move
the "cursor" back and forth along the writing
text without being forced to delete all backwards characters;

- the translation of menus and guide in languages other than english.

I perfectly know these new features would require
major development efforts, but they would
contribute to spread BrailleTouch to many more Braille users around the world.

I hope these suggestions could help.

Warm greetings.

M.

Braille Sense On Hand

2013-09-02 Thread Mario Barbuto

  Hello everybody,

I need to connect my Iphone to the Braille Sense OnHand Braille notetaker.
I have followed all the steps listed in the Hims OnHand manual, but
the Iphone doesn't see the Braille device.

I've an Iphone 4 and a 6.3 IOS version.

On despair, just for test, I tried to connect the Braille Sense to a
Windows PC, an Android phone, a Nokia N95 and all of them regularly
found the device that means its bluetooth component seems working as expected.

Some ideas?
Some suggestions?

Help will be highly appreciated.

TIA.

Mario.

Re: Braille Sense On Hand

2013-09-02 Thread Mario Barbuto
  Hi Adi,

unfortunately, in the "on "hand" device there are only two screen reader
terminal options:
bluetooth serial port and USB port.
Today I had the opportunity to try another Iphone 4S of a friend of mine,
reaching the same negative result.

Thank you for your help!

I heartily wish you the maximum success, hoping the hebrew voice will be
integrated into the Idevices soon.

Mario.

Re: Braille Sense On Hand

2013-09-03 Thread Mario Barbuto

 Hi Robert,

I suspect the OnHand works correctly with Iphone 5, but not with the 4 and 4S.
In fact a friend of mine living in Milan connects
OnHand and Iphone 5 successfully, while I did'nt neither to 4 nor to 4S.
Tomorrow I hope I'll have the opportunity to try
with an Iphone 5 and my own OnHand.
After that test and according to its result, I'll
get intouch with you offlist for more help,
taking advantage of your kind invitation.

Thank you very much indeed for your helpfulness.

M.

Re: Braille Sense On Hand

2013-09-05 Thread Mario Barbuto
After a strong struggle, I solved the problem
according to the instructions provided by Hims.
I mean performing an hard reset of the Iphone
device, long pressing both together the Home and
ScreenLock buttons for about ten seconds.
After that, the Braille Sense On Hand appears in
the list of VoiceOver bluetooth visible devices ready to pairing as usual.

Thank you very much indeed to people who gave me ideas and suggestions.

Warmly,

Mario.

Re: The Apple Braille Crisis. It's Got to be Fixed for our Kids

2013-09-20 Thread Mario Barbuto
  Hi Jonathan,

thank you very much indeed for sharing your entry and for the ideas issued in
it.

To those, I'd like to add some few items drawing people attention to the very
poor management of Braille reading in IOS:

a) Braille refresh often dramatically slows down while right panning;

b) panning left while in the last Braille window of a paragraph, will bring the
display to the beginning of that paragraph instead of the previous 14/18/32
characters of it, acting as a "beginning of paragraph" command instead of
PanLeft command;

c) there isn't an option like "no word wrap", allowing the Braille reader to
take advantage of all its Braille cells while right/left panning;

d) there isn't an option to automatically stop VO talking whenever a Braille
display reading button is pressed.

Just to list the major inconveniences or limitations I find in the IOS Braille
support.

Warmly,

Mario.

Re: braille displays?

2013-09-22 Thread Mario Barbuto
  Hi Alia,

I have had the chance to test various Braille displays connected to the Iphone
during the last months.
Despite in my opinion VoiceOver still offers a poor Braille support, I'd like
to indicate you the Focus 14 from Freedom Scientific:

14 eight dots Braille cells;
cursor rooting functions;
eight Braille keys plus a spacebar for Braille input;  various function keys;
20 hours battery life while  operated;
quick recharge time, even from the Iphone charger;
Bluetooth and USB connections;
less than ten hz wheigh (240 g) and very small in size;
practical carrying and protectiog case;
goodlooking aspect  and not too expensive in price;
very efficient support for Jaws screen reader for Windows;
support for BrailleBack screen reader for Android devices.

I hope this information will help you.

Mario.

Re: For Alia was Re: braille displays?

2013-09-25 Thread Mario Barbuto

  Hi Erik and all,

of course I can't offer you the opportunity to see one Esys Braille
device in Toronto,
but I could give some information on it derived from my direct
personal experience.

EuroBraille produces different Esys models from twelve to forty KGS
cells, equipped with eight dots and cursor routing.

Esys has Eight Braille rounded keys;
one spacebar and one function key;
two joysticks to the right and left side of the Braille line;
two or more thumb rotors.

The Esys display come in a very light, but solid metallic case of
various sizes, according to the number of the Braille cells.
It comes also with a protective soft pocket especially used for
transportation and safety.

It offers Bluetooth and USB connection.
The battery could be recharged through the USB port or a USB recharger.

Esys displays have also some independent internal functions like
editor, calculator, alarm clock, calendar, etc...

They mount a micro SD card up to 2GB for file and data storing.

In my opinion, the Braille reading is comfortable, whilst the writing
process is sometimes less accurate due to the keyboard bad reacting.
The editor's internal functions like searching text and moving to a
marker slow down depending on the file size, while the other internal
functions seem working  well.

VoiceOver, Jaws and NVDA work very well, as expected.
The battery life is too short: no more than five or six hours per charge.
The technical service seem to be expensive and not enough fast.
The price is rather expensive too.

I hope this helps.

Mario.

Re: I Found a Braille command for sliding to unlock in IOS7

2013-09-26 Thread Mario Barbuto

  Hi Teresa,

thank you for your information.

Actually the Braille command dots 2-4-6-space corresponds to the
three-finger left swipe and it works in all the situations where that
swiping gesture is required, for example to scroll on the desktop pages.

Warmly,

Mario.

Hi, all,

I discovered this on my own. Since I found that the dots-1-4-space
doesn't work anymore for sliding to unlock in IOS7, and noting that
one uses a three-finger swipe to the left to slide to unlock, I
decided to try the Braille equivalent, which is dots-2-4-6-space,
and it works great. :)

RE:Transferring contacts from a Nokia N82 to an iPhone 5s while preserving labels

2013-12-17 Thread Mario Barbuto
  Hi Pranav,

- save all the contacts into the Nokia 82 mass storage;
- join them in a single .vcf file;
- send it to yourself as attachment in a mail;
- pick that mail up by your Iphone email client;
- open the .vcf attachment;
- answer "yes" when it asks for creating new contacts.

Many months ago, this procedure worked quite well for me without data losses or
misplacements.

I hope this will help.

Warmly,

Mario.

Re: Transferring contacts from a Nokia N82 to an iPhone 5s while preserving labels

2013-12-23 Thread Mario Barbuto

  Hi Brian,

ou course you must have contacts in your Nokia Symbian phone.
Select and save all of them to the phone mass storage.
Connect that storage to a Windows computer and use the Dos command:

copy *.vcf allfiles.vcf/B

Now all your contacts are collected in the single file allfiles.vcf.

Proceed as indicated in my previous message.

All the best!

Mario.

Re: Setting brightness to 0 on Kindle app bug

2013-05-09 Thread Mario Barbuto

  Hi Rick,

it is enough to set the brightness to a value
less than 100 to produce the effects you
described: the left and right flick gestures do not work anymore.
Anyway, you could continue to use the various
menu options moving your finger around the screen
directly on the menu choices and tap them.
To get back the menu to normal, I mean, to turn
the left/right single finger flicks working as
usual, just set the Kindle app brightness value to 100 again.

This way, in my experience, the app reinstall process is not needed.

Mario.

At 18:24 08/05/2013, Rick Alfaro wrote:
I'm pretty sure someone else posted regarding
this, I think it was Raul. I'm seeing the following:

If I go into the Kindle app View options
available from the double tap menu, and set
brightness to 0 to conserve battery life, the
entire double tap menu is reduced to only 1
option which is return to book. I found this both on my iPhone and iPad Mini.

The only way I was able to get the menu back to
normal was to delete the app from my device and reinstall.

Just mentioning it here in case anyone else runs
into this. Note that reinstalling the app fixes
it and you don't lose anything, not even your last read place in your books.

Re: Braille typing apps

2013-06-03 Thread Mario Barbuto
Ari, if you prefer, you can change that in the
app options, setting upside down the fingers position scheme.

More generally speaking, despite I don't use

useful in some situations, especially in case of long input process.

The major inconvenience I find is the poor editing functions.
Brailletouch and BraillePad are almost similar,
except the last one is available for free.

Re: Selecting Text Using a Braille Display?

2013-06-26 Thread Mario Barbuto
  Hi Teresa,

I'd be happy I'm making a mistake, but I'm afraid VoiceOver does not support
text selection functions like those you are looking for, such as from cursor to
end of text or from cursor to beginning.
Actually I cannot understand why VO does not support them, but that is.
I don't understand many other things too, involving VoiceOver way of working,
such as, for example, no word wrap while reading in Braille or a gradual, but
continouus slow down panright advance while reading in Braille, specially long
sentences.
Sometimes I ask myself if people helping Apple to develop VO Braille interface
is really using it in its daily work.

RE:RE: Questions concerning using email on the iPhone.

2013-07-01 Thread Mario Barbuto
Yes, Sarah, you are right! But when you have hundreds lines to remove from a
text, this way I wish you "good luck!" and "see you tomorrow!".

The lack of very usual text editing functions, actually, in my opinion,
represents a boring limitation of IOS system and VO screen reader.

RE: RE: Questions concerning using email on the iPhone.

2013-07-02 Thread Mario Barbuto

  Hi Sieghard,

of course, I don't want to compare two pieces of technology so
different like a computer and a mobile phone.
I do completely agree with you the touchscreen systems have less
flexibility and a low range of features, including editing functions.
But some very easy to implement editing functions I'm sure will help
the users and will not cost too much from the programming side.
Christopher, for example, already suggested a very simple way for
having comfortable editing functions to select blocks of text like in
Emacs editor.

The same way, I guess many other blind users would have clever suggestions too.

Actually, my idea is even simpler than that Christopher suggested.
In fact, I'd appreciate just a couple of new functions included into
the edit menu:

"Select from cursor to end of text";
"Select from cursor to beginning of text".

This way, while editing an email answer, for example, you could
quickly and easily select and delete the long tail of consecutive
previous Replies, often consisting of hundreds text lines.

To finish, roughly speaking, it is a good idea to take a look at
other touchscreen systems like Android, to see if better editing
solutions could be implemented in IOS too, although Apple
accessibility developers recently seem to me a little less sensitive
to users suggestions.
I'll investigate the Android next weeks with the friendly help of
some other blind users certainly higher experienced than me in using
that system.

Warmly,

Mario.

Hi Mario,

Might I ask how you would suggest this can be improved? What gestures would
you like to see for selecting text and are there other touch screen devices
which offer a better experience? I guess I should rephrase this, do Android
phones offer a more user friendly experience when it comes to selecting text
since to my knowledge those are the only other somewhat accessible touch
screen devices out there? I have never used an Android device so forgive my
ignorance, but is selecting text and copy/cut/paste even accessible for a
blind user on an Android phone?

With a bit of practice I find it relatively easy to set my rotor to lines
and then use multiple pinch out gestures one after another to select a fair
bit of text. When you are talking about hundreds of lines then sure, I agree
that this would be a challenge, but then again I do have a computer and
while my iPhone is awesome and I can do lots of things with it, some things
are still done more efficiently on the computer and I would hazard a guess
and say that this holds true even for sighted people.

Sieghard

thank you for your useful notification.
Perhaps Shift+Option+DownArrow will select from cursor to end of text?
Are there, corresponding braille keyboard keystroke combinations for
these commands?

Then pressing backspace will delete that chunk of text. I didn't
test this on a huge document, but it's a nice and quick command if
one wants to remove the headers in an Email reply.

Re: Action games for iOS devices

2013-07-04 Thread Mario Barbuto

  Hi Alan,

I installed STB Chrome that promises to be a very funny game.
Unfortunately, something must be wrong in my actions because I cannot
read the values the nine buttons assume after you tap on each of them.

In fact, running the game from scratch, the nine buttons are labeled as
Mechanical clock T1 to mechanical clock T9.
After I roll the dice and get its total result, every following tap
on one of the nine buttons produce the tapped button itself changes
its label and it simply becomes "Button".
I didn't find any right way to know the numeric value of each button,
after having tapped it.

My IOS system is updated to the last version, while my Iphone is 4.
Some suggestions or ideas?
Where I'm making mistake?

Thank you.

Mario.

Thank you, Donna!
I guess it's better to renounce for the moment.

Alan, please, don't apologize...
The programer of the game should do it, instead...

Mario.

I have this same problem with STB chrome. The problem seems to come

game. After rolling the dice when you go through the boxes and VO
announces the boxes as being labled as T1, T2, T3 etc this is the
same as when VO will announce the boxes as properly labeled 1-9. So
in my observation of playing the game on a daily basis and the game
responding differently with VO with any game play on any given day I
can say that this is a flaw in the game itself. You could try
clearing the game from the app switcher before opening the game to
play. This helps sometimes but isn't a cure all fix.

Happy rolling!

Re: Introduction And File Storage Questionn

2013-07-29 Thread Mario Barbuto

  Hi Desi,

There are various apps you can sync in DropBox having your stored
files available everywhere and everytime, even out of wireless
connection, but with a 3G active.
I have used almost successfully AccessNote, Write2, PlainText and
some others, you can easily find in the AppleStore.
These apps create their own folder inside the DropBox folder where
they store the files.

Take into consideration they only manage txt format files, unfortunately...
They can also operate offline, syncing the new files when the phone
gets its connection wireless or 3G again.
Each of them isn't fully accessible; at any rate, all of them could
be managed almost efficiently using VoiceOver and a little patience.

Warmly,
Mario.

way to store a number of my Braille and text files on my iPod
