This was in reply to the message from McCallum Malcolm that appeared in
the list on Friday 10th and which had the subject line Newbie. The
message read:

I am setting up a lady of 'Mature years' with an iMac and running
10.3.9 with a C60 printer. She is a Physiotherapist (retired :-)) and
has all, and I mean all her buttons on. She has never owned a computer,
mainly because of costs. I will give her a flying start but wonder if
any kind Wamuggian would be a support person until she gets up to
flying speed. I will not publish her address(S. of Bunbury) for obvious
reasons but she is in 6230 and i will email her address to anyone who
is in the area. Will set her up on westnet dialup (cannot do ADSL in
this area)

After replying off list to Mac, I copied my reply to Mac to the list as
an afterthought.
I apologise to those who wrote off list, for my poor attention to
placing my reply in context.

It helps to have had some sleep before dealing with list mail ;-)

Faxing with G5 iMac and ADSL

2006-02-12 Thread Spin
Hi everyone, I am running a G5 iMac with OS X 10.4.4, and would like
to use the faxing capabilities of Tiger.

I have a Belkin 4 port router with wireless providing ADSL internet
connection. Currently I have it connected as follows:

Phone Line - splitter
- Phone
- ADSL router - Lan1 to Ethernet port on iMac

I've set up to Receive faxes Printing Fax preferences.
But there doesn't appear to be a modem in the G5, and there is no
connector for a phone line (just an Ethernet port)

Can I use faxing on the G5? If so, how? Thanks for any assistance.

Glenn.

Re: Interesting desktop idea from Sun

2006-02-12 Thread Michael Parker
A 3d desktop, is an interesting concept, but SUN
coming out with a pretty gui? Ok, I admit, i've been
a bit sceptical of SUN's GUI design ever since around
1998-1999 when they came out with some new gui and
totally confused the unix geeks for weeks.

My prediction is that Windows will do 3d desktops
second or barely first and in either case, okay. Sun,
if they do it... it will be far worse. (Sun computers
are known for reliability not a beutiful gui.) If
Apple is thinking about it, we should hear about it in
the Apple Developer conference mid this year, and if
they do it, it will be truly impressive. Apple has a
long standing reputation for their great GUI design.
(Not that I'm saying anything new here) . But I
guess, you have to wonder what is gained by a 3d gui,
and I guess I'll have to see it before I really grasp
the concept.

Probably old hat by now (I notice that an early
version of Longhorn stole this idea before it was
shelved), but the demo is very cool. I love the
idea of turning around the video or webpage to
reveal a sticky note :-) In some sense it made OS X
look kind of boring. Maybe we will see something
like that in 10.5? Apple have been very quiet about
10.5 since it was announced last May.

Re: Interesting desktop idea from Sun

2006-02-12 Thread James / Hans Kunz
an important feature of 3d is that you can have more windows open at
once without cluttering the screen you can move files from subfolder
to subfolder (on an other volume) much easier
the flip around write onto the back can be handy to store content
description, which in turn may help in a future search/find...

in the demo movie they forgot to actually work with the windows..

with the f11 function in osx all open windows go away which is
unpractical if you want to move files (eg sort documents)

IPod batteries

Is it better to keep my iPod battery constantly topped up or to let it run
down before recharging?

I know there was discussion about this with rechargeable batteries in the
past.

Where there is no internal modem you will need to connect a USB modem
externally to the iMac
and connect the modem phone jack via a double adaptor at the Phone
point .

IF it's a NiCad battery it is preferable to have it fully discharge
before recharging ,

IF its a NiMh battery fully discharging is not necessary
If it's a Lithium Ion battery , it's preferable to not fully charge it
unless you plan to make use of it.

Mine is an iPod Photo 60 G. A Lithium Ion from the table if found.

I understand it can also be used in Panther.
Has anyone used it in OSX 10.4?

PS2 to USB connector

2006-02-12 Thread Susan Hastings
Hi, we have ordered the above thingy, which we are told may take 2 -
4 weeks to arrive. We need it to attach a PS2 keyboard to a Mac (its
a special keyboard for people with disabilities). The little device
which used to come with printers is not suitable as its the opposite
configuration to what is needed. Anyway, if anyone knows of a way to
get one more quickly, please let me know. cheers, Susan.

Wanted: Mac boxes

2006-02-12 Thread Phillip McGree

Hiya,

My sister and I are packing up someone's household and need some
boxes. Apple boxes are always the best - they are strong and don't
fall apart, and have carry handles in the sides.

If anyone's got a Mac box or three that they have no need for, please
let me know and I can come pick it/them up in my van.

C'ya,
Phil

Re: PS2 to USB connector

2006-02-12 Thread Susan Hastings
Bob, this green thing is the opposite to what is required, we have
them floating around as well. As electricians say, we want a female
circular plug(no pins) and a male USB (not a port, but the end that
plugs into a port).

But, will drop in to Dick Smiths this week to see what they have, as
suggested by Christian.

thanks, Susan.

Maybe !
I have a green thingy , USB socket to circular plug with pins

the old Mac keyboard plug !
