Fwd: iPhoto Issue

2008-12-20 Thread peta belczowski

Hullo David

Thank you for replying - and thanks to everyone else who has been
trying to help with my iPhoto problem.

I have tried various suggestions from WAMUG and also some given to
me off-line, however with no luck. I work with my iPhotos a lot,
nearly every day - this is my passion - so if I lost my thousands
and thousands of photos it would be a disaster for me.

To those who have recommended that I find someone to come and look
at the Apple, I think that it is best I now do this. I am starting
already to have difficulty remembering what steps I have taken to
rectify the problem, so I think it is time to call a halt. Maybe
the Apple help-line may be able to talk me over a solution on Monday
morning, but maybe not.

Incidentally, I think the iPhoto Library was under my name, which
was next to a home emblem, so perhaps something strange happened
when I was first set up early this year with my (first) Apple.

My Apple details are as follows:

Mac OSX v.10.5.5
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
*Startup Disc - Information for this is not under the Apple emblem,
with the above info.

I live in Kalamunda - I can see that you seem to be in Manjimup
David! Do you know of anyone who lives up this way?

Does anyone know of an Apple expert who lives near to Kalamunda?

Any names/phone no's. would be appreciated.

Many thanks - what a lot of frustration this rainy Saturday.

Again, thank you to everyone who responded.

Hi Peta,
Use the Apple help line only as a last resort. The last time I use

Problem Solved: iPhoto Issue

2008-12-20 Thread peta belczowski
Thank you all so very much for your efforts to help me with my missing
iPhoto and my icon dropping from the dock (two problems).

This problem was caused by, in some mysterious unknown way, the iPhoto
having placed intself into the wrong directory. Now, a happy ending,
I am reunited with my photos.

Have a great weekend and a fantastic Christmas/New Year break.

Hi Peta,

You mentioned in one email how important your photos are to you, it
would be devastating to loose all your photos.

I work with my iPhotos a lot, nearly every day - this is my passion

Make sure you are doing current backups of your iPhoto Library onto an
External Firewire Drive, or at least burn CD's / DVD's of all your
photos.

Thanks for this Ronni

Yes, I had plugged in my Maxtor external hard drive (which I had been
using with my Toshiba notebook and which was set to automatically
back up every 24 hours) when I bought my Apple earlier this year. I
unplugged the Maxtor a while ago because I don't think it was that
happy to work with the Apple. So on my list of things to buy was an
external hard drive for the Apple. These were really expensive at
that time, so it was put onto hold. I note they have been coming down
in price more and more recently.

Any recommendations of brand/size or other thoughts?

*Incidentally, I did not discover and solve the (various) problems
with iPhoto by myself - I had a very patient and helpful off-line
helper, during nearly the whole of Saturday. So much appreciated -
there was no way that I could have solved this by myself!

Hi Peta,

I highly recommend Western Digital External Firewire Drives. The SATA
3.5 1TB (as long as you have a Firewire 800 port) or the Western
Digital 3.5 IDE 7200rpm Drives (Firewire 400 port) in a Sarotech
HardBox enclosures.

I've never had any of my drives fail.

Send an email to Daniel Kerr. I have purchased all my drives at
reasonable prices from Daniel Kerr of Macwizardry,

DROBO - Storage Robot

2008-12-20 Thread Ronda Brown

Hello People,

When Peta asked for advice about Backup Drives, it prompted me to send
some information on my new Backup Storage setup.
I purchased (through Daniel of MacWizardry), and have been using the
2nd Generation DROBO-Storage Robot for over a month now and I'm
thoroughly impressed, he is brilliant!
He is also FUN! He has lots of lights and looks very cool sitting on
my desk. DROBO Dashboard is one neat application.

Drobo is designed to actively monitor and protect your data at all
times. It is also programmed to optimise data storage so you don't
have to.
Drobo acts as a large, single pool of storage that is always available
and it's also inherently backed-up on the Drobo and protected
against drive failure or disk corruption. He is One Big Pool of
Protected Storage.

Drobo has Four (4) Data Bays. He will only take 3.5 SATA1 SATA11
Drives NOT IDE drives.

You must have at least two drives in Drobo.
I now have in DROBO three drives. 1TB SATA + 1TB SATA + 250GB SATA
Drives, giving me 2.25TB (2.04TB Actual). 934.96GB is being used for
Protection.
When I only had 1TB + 250GB, DROBO gave me the RED ALERT that I must
insert a new drive into the empty Data Bay indicated by the red light.

Drobo needed extra space for protection of my data.

You can use Drobolator Capacity Calculator to help you select the
number and size of drives to fit your needs http://www.drobo.com/Products/drobolator.html

You can just add new disks when you need more capacity, or replace a
smaller drive with a larger one, no data migration or reconfiguration
is required.

Your data has multiple layers of automatic protection.

Drobo works with Time Machine, SuperDuper, and other backup software
and utilities. It works perfectly with Déjà Vu (the backup I use).

You can Network Drobo. This explains Networking Drobo:
http://www.thedigitalstory.com/blog/2008/04/drobo_hard_drive_bac.html

Drobo utilises a revolutionary storage technology that makes it
simple for anyone to use, yet is powerful enough for business. Once
you experience the power of Drobo, the idea of keeping multiple
external drives or a RAID 5 array will seem as antiquated as that
28.8Kbps modem in the back of your closet.

This latest release Second Generation has 2 Firewire 800 ports 1
USB 2.0 port.

The First generation was only USB 2.0.

Now, it's also fast. Drobo is available with FireWire 800 and
enhanced USB 2.0 performance giving you the data protection and ease
you need, with the speed and interface you want.

The retail on them is now $1029.95 for the Drobo Storage Robot unit.
Then you use your SATA Drives or purchase more or larger drives when
you need them.

That's interesting Duncan.
I know I updated the Firmware without any problems at all. I think if

What issues did you experience?
Was it to do with your Firewall blocking the web-based firmware update?
Or did it fail to install?

Hi Barry,

One really easy way is just to use an encrypted disc image - all anyone can
see is the image file - you just double click it to mount and it asks you
for the password. No password, no mount.

Just use Disk utility to create it.

Re: USB flash drive security

2008-12-20 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Barry,

There is a Corsair Flash Padlock. http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/CMFUSBPADLOCK-4GB.pdf

http://www.corsair.com/products/padlock/default.aspx if you feel the
need to buy another flashdrive.

Creating an Encrypted Disk Image on the FlashDrive as Neil has
suggested is good.
Just make sure to always eject -- since the disk image is encrypted,
if it is damaged, the whole thing goes kaput!

Hi Rod,

It could be choking on a file.

The Time Machine menu bar extra (the reverse-arrow sync icon) will
have a black triangle exclamation mark in it.
The extra's drop-down menu will have Latest Backup: Failed… in the
top line.
Selecting that menu item takes the user to the System Prefs pane for
Time Machine which then shows an info button in red next to the word
Failed (also in red).

Clicking on the red i brings up a drop-down sheet declaring the
following:

Time Machine Error

Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to
the backup volume.

To ascertain which is the offending file, one could use the Console -
All Messages option.

Re: USB flash drive security

2008-12-20 Thread Neil Houghton
Well, that's one way of doing it.

Another way is to create a blank disc image (or more than one if you want to
split the info into parts) on your mac, then copy the info from the flash
drive to the disc image(s) on the mac. Then erase the flash drive before
copying the disc images across.

I don't know of any way to leave the info in situ on the flash drive and
just lock the drive - but you could always Google - it's amazing what you
can find out there!

Re: Time Machine Failures

2008-12-20 Thread Rod Blitvich
Hi Ronni and Eugene
I just found this:
In order to find the corrupted files (Disk Verify in Disk Utility did
not detect the corrupted files) go to the CONSOLE program, them click
system.log. In the finder box for Console, type backupd to narrow the
log to messages associated with backup. Look for references to files
associated with ERROR (-36) after you attept to run the back up. Then delete
those files and restart the backup from where it left off. If it halts
again, go back to the system.log and see if you can pick up any additional
corrupted files and delete them. I found several iPhoto files, as well as
iTunes files I had downloaded which were causing the Time Capsule to abort
backing up. (it was not reassuring that photos would be corrupted like this,
but oh well.) I also ended up deleting the enormous SYSTEM ARCHIVE file from
my old OS before I upgraded to Leopard, because this also seemed like a
problem.

Looking into Console I found my backup may have been choking on a faulty
file which was identified with the error -36 code.
Have deleted that file and will try again.

Hello People,

When Peta asked for advice about Backup Drives, it prompted me to
send some information on my new Backup Storage setup.
I purchased (through Daniel of MacWizardry), and have been using
the 2nd Generation DROBO-Storage Robot for over a month now and
I'm thoroughly impressed, he is brilliant!
He is also FUN! He has lots of lights and looks very cool sitting
on my desk. DROBO Dashboard is one neat application.

Drobo is designed to actively monitor and protect your data at all
times. It is also programmed to optimise data storage so you don't
have to.
Drobo acts as a large, single pool of storage that is always
available and it's also inherently backed-up on the Drobo and
protected against drive failure or disk corruption. He is One Big
Pool of Protected Storage.

Drobo has Four (4) Data Bays. He will only take 3.5 SATA1
SATA11 Drives NOT IDE drives.

You must have at least two drives in Drobo.
I now have in DROBO three drives. 1TB SATA + 1TB SATA + 250GB
SATA Drives, giving me 2.25TB (2.04TB Actual). 934.96GB is being
used for Protection.
When I only had 1TB + 250GB, DROBO gave me the RED ALERT that I
must insert a new drive into the empty Data Bay indicated by the
red light.

Drobo needed extra space for protection of my data.

You can use Drobolator Capacity Calculator to help you select the
number and size of drives to fit your needs http://www.drobo.com/Products/drobolator.html

You can just add new disks when you need more capacity, or replace
a smaller drive with a larger one, no data migration or
reconfiguration is required.

Your data has multiple layers of automatic protection.

Drobo works with Time Machine, SuperDuper, and other backup
software and utilities. It works perfectly with Déjà Vu (the
backup I use).

Once you experience the power of Drobo, the idea of keeping
multiple external drives or a RAID 5 array will seem as antiquated
as that 28.8Kbps modem in the back of your closet.

This latest release Second Generation has 2 Firewire 800 ports
1 USB 2.0 port.

The First generation was only USB 2.0.

Now, it's also fast. Drobo is available with FireWire 800 and
enhanced USB 2.0 performance giving you the data protection and
ease you need, with the speed and interface you want.

The retail on them is now $1029.95 for the Drobo Storage Robot
unit. Then you use your SATA Drives or purchase more or larger
drives when you need them.

Was it to do with your Firewall blocking the web-based firmware
update?

Or did it fail to install?

Cheers,
Ronni

I agree this is a great product BUT make sure you update the
firmware before you format the drives as we had a few minor issues.

Drobo is designed to actively monitor and protect your data at
all times. It is also programmed to optimise data storage so you
don't have to.

You can just add new disks when you need more capacity, or
replace a smaller drive with a larger one, no data migration or
reconfiguration is required.

Your data has multiple layers of automatic protection.

Drobo works with Time Machine, SuperDuper, and other backup
software and utilities. It works perfectly with Déjà Vu (the
backup I use).

Once you experience the power of Drobo, the idea of keeping
multiple external drives or a RAID 5 array will seem as
antiquated as that 28.8Kbps modem in the back of your closet.
