G5 iMac Slow-Down

2009-03-31 Thread Diana Graham Stevens
Graham's iMac [PowerPC G5(3.0), 1.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM running 10.3.9] has
become extremely slow.

All applications run slowly and collecting email or using the
Internet is so slow as to be useless. The connection is OK because my
G5 still works well.

I repaired permissions but that has not helped.

Can anyone suggest what is wrong/how to fix it?

Best wishes to all from Diana

Hi Diana ,

So how much spare hard drive space is there ... ?

When the Mac is short of Ram it writes out to the hard drive on
temporary files ,

so a nearly full hard drive will cause everything to slow up .

It's good to have 25% of the drive free .

Cheers

Hello Diana,

How much free space do you have on your hard drive? 10/15% is the
least amount you should have free.

Are there are any applications that hog the CPU?

Have you emptied the caches?
Download Onyx for Panther here http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/onyx_panther.html
use it to empty the caches.

Using whatsize will also give you an idea of the size of your various
applications, perhaps there are some you don't need that removing
would speed things up for you.

You can download WhatSize for Panther here:

I have closed all my applications and have re-launched Finder in

I think I had better start copying his files to another drive, it

Using Activity Monitor, can you identify what is going on on the machine?
- how much System Memory is used/available? If there is no memory
left, what is using all the memory?
- is the CPU fully utilised or not?
- is there a lot of Disk Activity going on?
- when you attempt to use the Web, are packets being sent/received in
bursts and then stalling, or being sent/received very slowly?

Activity Monitor might point you to where the slowdown is happening.

Tried that. CPU is variable but mostly not being used. RAM has 588 MB
free. No disk activity.

I don't really understand the graph of the Web packets but there are
spikes with gaps in between, height of spikes variable but mostly
near top of window.

As a test I tried again to download Onyx as Ronni suggested. It was
not quite as slow as before, at least I got to the download page. I
started the download. It only got 33 KB in the first minute, I went
away to feed the dogs. Next time I looked there were only red (out)
spikes and after 20 minutes it was still at 33 KB and nothing was
happening, no spikes at all, so I cancelled.

I then looked at the weather and iinet home page, they loaded slowly
but they did get there. It seems as though any large job gets stuck.

Hi Diana

It could be the drive is fragmented and needs something run over it, like
DiskWarrior to degfragment (or a similar program).
It could also be the start of a failing Hard Drive, hence why it's slow. So
make sure to keep a good backup. (Techtool can sometimes tell you the status
of a drive as well).

Hope that helps.

Iphone Screenshot Download and iWorks Tutorial Question

2009-03-31 Thread Wez
Heya all, Couple of unrelated questions that happened to have
cropped up at the same time.

Firstly I'm trying to get a screenshot off my iPhone. The preview
method works fine for photos to get them into the mac. The
screenshots however appear in .png format greyed out and are unable
to be touched. From what I can gather looking around I think its
possible with iPhoto which I don't have installed. I could email the
files if I had mail setup which I don't.

Secondly my Mother is trying to learn using the various mac programs
and is after a iWorks Tutorial/walkthrough or the like. She is after
a basic course which explains as much as possible she can run through
at her own pace? Anyone know of a good place to look for such a

No Macs for NSW schools

2009-03-31 Thread Paul Weaver
Saw the following in 'The Australian' today.

Chinese computer company Lenovo has won a contract to provide 200,000 laptops
for NSW secondary school students. The NSW government has also announced
agreements reached with software giants Microsoft and Adobe to provide an
extensive suite of software for the laptops. The Lenovo contract, worth $150
million, includes 25,000 laptops for teachers. It will be funded as part of the
federal government's $1.9 billion digital education program. Premier Nathan
Rees said his government would contribute $25.5 million for the software, which
he said would cost each student more than $5,500 if they were to purchase it in
a store.

Installing Leopard on G4 iMac

Hi Walter,

What are the details of your iMac, you need to check them to see if
Leopard can be installed on it.

If it meets the specifications, you need to purchase a Leopard DVD.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/

Technical Specifications:
General requirements
	• Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or
faster) processor

• 512MB of memory
• DVD drive for installation
• 9GB of available disk space

Re: Installing Leopard on G4 iMac

2009-03-31 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Walter,

If you have the full retail version of Leopard, then you should be able to
boot from the install disk and do the erase and install.

BUT many of the G4 iMacs (eg mine!) are not supported for Leopard (processor
too slow) - in which case you will not be able to install from the Leopard
disk.

If your iMac is officially too slow there are ways around this - Google is
your friend - but you may find the performance very sluggish.

Also, if you are having hard disk problems, I would make sure the erased
disk checks out OK before spending too much time on set-up.

Cheers

When I finished I noticed the CD seemed hot so we cleaned the fluff

Re: Installing Leopard on G4 iMac

2009-03-31 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Walter,

Technically, you should be able to install Leopard on the late model 1.25GHz
G4 iMac.

License-wise, unless you got the family pack, you are only licensed to
install it on one machine (either the G4 or the intel but not both).

As far as I know, Apple doesn't have any active software measures to stop
you installing it on two machines - it's an honour system.

If you actually want to run Classic apps, you should stick to Tiger.

Regarding the Tiger upgrade DVD - I think that it will probably check for an
appropriate existing system before installing - if it can actually see the
existing Tiger system on your hard drive (even though it's not booting) you
MAY be able to run an erase install directly over the old system.

I would think the easiest way would be just to try - the installer should
tell you if it needs a prior system present that it can't find.

Cheers

BUT many of the G4 iMacs (eg mine!) are not supported for Leopard
 (processor
too slow) - in which case you will not be able to install from the
 Leopard
 disk.

If your iMac is officially too slow there are ways around this -
 Google is
your friend - but you may find the performance very sluggish.

Also, if you are having hard disk problems, I would make sure the
 erased
disk checks out OK before spending too much time on set-up.

 Cheers

 Hi all,

I have a G4 lamp shade iMac which requires erase and install because
 of some corruption
on its hard disk. Have not been able to solve it with Disk warrior or
 Disk
 utility. The screen remains grey.

The iMac came with Panther V 10.3 and was running Tiger until it
 failed last week.
Can I install Leopard after the erase or do I have to start with
 Panther then upgrade
to Tiger and then to Leopard ?

 Looking for help,

 thanks

Hi Walter

As Ronni said the list only accepts plain text.

But I notice that your posts are now coming through to the post.

Hi Daniel,

I'm a little confused. I have posted at least once before, but have

Then I tried to send the question again but it won't go through.
The message is:

Do I have to select a particular font ?

You may need to check what email address you are sending from. The
list will only accept posts from subscribed email addresses.

For example I have about 4 or 5 email addresses but I only use
my .mac address to subscribe to the list, therefore I can only
post to the list by sending from the .mac account

Hi Diana,

could you please let me know whether I have to go onto the Wamug

Have just sent a query to wamug@wamug.org.au but it was not able
to be delivered.

Hi Walter

You just send an email. I don't understand why your message did
not get through. Try copying the address below and pasting it
into your email in case there is some hidden character in it.

WAMUG Mailing List wamug@wamug.org.au

If that does not work send me your message I shall send it to
the list.

I have sent a copy of this to the list, maybe someone will be
able to help?

Diana
