Re: charging iPod Touch

2010-01-16 Thread James / Hans Kunz
there is a strong possibility that the usb port you are using
delivers only 100ma which is not enough for recharge, it has nothing
to do with speed only with the 5v power coming out of the usb, high
powered equipment (chargers, harddisks) should not run directly of a
usb port any way..(if you overload the usb port shuts down) a
externalpowered usb hub could be a solution aswell
some dark world pcs front give you the same trouble if you connect
to a backside port all is fine

try all usb ports i'm sure one gives the power for your recharging

I have tried different USB ports, a powered hub, but no go. Both

Not a big problem, but it is interesting...any ideas for me?

Re: charging iPod Touch

2010-01-16 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi James,

This is why I suggested to Kevin to check in System Profiler all his USB ports.
System Profiler will show him what the Current Available, Current Required
speed.
Similar to this:
Current Available (mA): 500
   Current Required (mA): 500
   Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec

The iPod Touch requires at least 500 mA for proper charging as well as voltage
within specification.

Cheers,
Ronni

Thanks again Ronni and also James for your suggestions.

I'm not sure what happened, and I may have subconsciously done just
as you suggested Ronni, but now Acrobat is showing the printers in
the Page Setup requester. This after almost 3 days of trying all
sorts of things to get it working.

Now I can print my required size using Acrobat - I hope it lasts.

but I can then use the arrows to select my Epson TX700W printer or
any other printer I have installed and added in Print Fax.

You are not able to select any other printer, as no other printers
show under Format For?

Mike try this:
1. Open Acrobat Pro first
2. Then go to File Open to open the PDF in Acrobat

Then can you now see your Printers in the Page Setup?

To answer your questions:
Yes, the Epson R230 shows in the Print and Fax prefs, along with
my other printers.
To elaborate - I have no problems choosing the printer when
printing from Acrobat, or anywhere else - it is only that I can't
choose it in the Page Setup (in Acrobat only) which results in a
reduced print area available because of the Any Printer default
being used.

I can print from Preview OK - just that Acrobat has more output
options except, in this case, the printable area of a page. In
fact I can print OK from Acrobat except the aforementioned problem
- I can reduce the print size to fit the printable area but that's
not what I want with these files I'm printing.

I have seen someone else with this problem http://
forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=602214 but no solution.

Can you print a PDF from Preview without any problems?

Taken from Adobe Support:
At times, you may encounter problems when printing a PDF file.
For example, a PDF file can contain damaged content such as
images or fonts that cannot be rendered by Acrobat during the
printing process.
Choosing Print As Image bypasses that rendering operation by
sending the printer a rasterized image of the document.

To print as image:

1. Open the PDF file in Acrobat.
2. Choose File Print.
3. Click Advanced.
4. Select Print As Image near the top of the dialog box.
5. Click OK, and then click OK again to print.

although it doesn't matter which printer I use - it is the Page

On my wife's MacBook, using Snow Leopard, the Page Setup shows
all printers so it is just this version of Acrobat on this

Keynote DVD

2010-01-16 Thread Laura Webb

Good morning all

As a newbie user of Keynote I've managed to sort out how to create a basic
presentation. I've made good use of the on line tutorials. A good project for a
hot day!!

With a very new superdrive I wanted to put burning a DVD to the test, something
I've not been able to do before, because my MacBook previously only had a combo
drive. Some of you will remember all my recent problems with the optical drive
when upgrading to SL I did the burn of my keynote presentation through Finder
and had no problems with that.

I had expected the DVD would play on the DVD player attached to my TV so I
could view the slides in a larger format. It doesn't and just comes up as
unknown disc. Nor can I play it in the normal way through my MacBook. I can
view the new DVD of my Keynote presentation through Front Row (and like what I
see) so I know all the slides are there as they should be and that the burn was
successful.

Could someone please explain what I am doing wrong? Why can't I view my
Keynote DVD in the same way as any other DVD?

Regards
Laura

Hi Laura, did you burn the presentation as a Keynote document or did
you first export it from Keynote in Movie format? It needs to be
burned as a playable DVD from a movie format.

Also, when playing it on the TV do you want to be able to control the
slides or just play them through as a movie?

Hi Laura,

To play a DVD on a TV you first need to Create a DVD. A DVD requires a Menu
and conversion to mpeg format.

In Keynote 09 you can go to Share - Send To - iDVD

1.In Keynote you can go to Share - Send To - iDVD
2.Specify the size of the video you want to create:
Standard 4:3 or Widescreen 16:9
3. Chose a Playback Uses Method:
a] Manual Advance: Gives viewers total control over the slideshow as they click
to advance slides
b] Recorded Timing : Uses timings that you have recorded for a slideshow using
the command File record Slideshow
c] Fixed Timing: Runs the slideshow with no user interaction. You must set
slide duration build options. If slides contain automatic build timings,
those will be used.
4. Click Send: Then give the file a name and target your Movies folder.
5. Click Export

A Quicktime Movie file is written to disk. Depending on the number of slides,
it can take a few minutes to create the DVD Video file.
Before the export finishes, iDVD will launch automatically. Whichever theme you
were using the last time you had iDVD open will be active, and you might hear
the theme's soundtrack playing. You can click the start or stop motion button
in the DVD main menu to stop the animation and sound.
6. When the export finishes, click the Play button to test the DVD project.
a] Click Play Movie to watch the entire movie
b] Click Scene Selection to see an index of the presentation

Now choose a theme for the main menu of the DVD, one that matches the look of
your slideshow

1. Click the Themes button to access all available themes
2. Choose the Theme from the pop-up menu
3. Then click OK to apply the theme family to all menus

Now you need to populate the DVD menu to complete its design
1. Click the Edit Drop Zones button to access all the drop zones for the project
Drop zones are places in the menu where you can add (or drop) your own content.

2. Click the Preview button to preview your DVD
Watch the project all the way through to ensure smooth playback.
When finished with the preview, click the Exit button on the remote to stop
previewing the DVD
3. If you are happy with your result you can now click the Burn Button to
create the DVD
OR, Like I do, Go to File Save As Disc Image, then you can check the DVD in
DVD Player before you actually burn it to a DVD-R disc.

Note: Always burn a DVD at slow speed. I burn all my DVD's at 2X (perhaps 4X on
a Verbatim Up to16X DVD-R)
The slower the speed the better compatibility with DVD Players.

Cheers,
Ronni

I don't use Share Send To iDVD when I have an Audio Soundtrack in my

was all out of sync when played in iDVD.

in DVD Player before you actually burn it to a DVD-R disc.

Note: Always burn a DVD at slow speed. I burn all my DVD's at 2X (perhaps 4X
 on a Verbatim Up to16X DVD-R)
The slower the speed the better compatibility with DVD Players.

Re: Keynote DVD

2010-01-16 Thread Ronda Brown
You're welcome Susan,

My Keynote slideshows normally have an Audio Sound Track and I found using the
Share-Send to-iDVD the sound track was all out of sync when played in iDVD.

So I decided to Share Export to Quicktime.
Playback Uses: Fixed Timing
Slide Duration: 4.0 seconds
Build Duration: 1.5 seconds (these settings matching what I had in my Keynote
Presentation)
Repeat: None
Ticked Enter full screen mode when opened
Formats: Full Quality, Large
Audio ticked include audio (sound files, movie audio) include the slideshow
soundtrack

Exported to Movies Folder
Played the exported quicktime movie to check it and it was in perfect sync.

Then opened iDVD created a DVD project using this exported QT movie.
Saved as a Disc Image to check and it was fine when played in DVD Player.app
Then burnt a DVD from the disc image using Toast 10 Titanium

Played the completed DVD in my DVD Player / TV and it was perfect.
So, I would suggest if you have a sound track in your Keynote Slideshow, that
you export using Quicktime with similar settings to mine above.

Cheers,
Ronni

Could someone please explain what I am doing wrong? Why can't I view my
Keynote DVD in the same way as any other DVD?

 Hi Laura,

To play a DVD on a TV you first need to Create a DVD. A DVD requires a
Menu and conversion to mpeg format.

In Keynote 09 you can go to Share - Send To - iDVD

1.In Keynote you can go to Share - Send To - iDVD
2.Specify the size of the video you want to create:
 Standard 4:3 or Widescreen 16:9
 3. Chose a Playback Uses Method:
a] Manual Advance: Gives viewers total control over the slideshow as they
 click to advance slides
b] Recorded Timing : Uses timings that you have recorded for a slideshow
using the command File record Slideshow
c] Fixed Timing: Runs the slideshow with no user interaction. You must set
slide duration build options. If slides contain automatic build timings,
 those will be used.
 4. Click Send: Then give the file a name and target your Movies folder.
 5. Click Export

A Quicktime Movie file is written to disk. Depending on the number of
slides, it can take a few minutes to create the DVD Video file.
Before the export finishes, iDVD will launch automatically. Whichever theme
you were using the last time you had iDVD open will be active, and you might
hear the theme's soundtrack playing. You can click the start or stop motion
button in the DVD main menu to stop the animation and sound.
 6. When the export finishes, click the Play button to test the DVD project.
a] Click Play Movie to watch the entire movie
b] Click Scene Selection to see an index of the presentation

Now choose a theme for the main menu of the DVD, one that matches the look
 of your slideshow

 1. Click the Themes button to access all available themes
 2. Choose the Theme from the pop-up menu
 3. Then click OK to apply the theme family to all menus

Now you need to populate the DVD menu to complete its design
 1. Click the Edit Drop Zones button to access all the drop zones for the
 project
Drop zones are places in the menu where you can add (or drop) your own
 content.

 2. Click the Preview button to preview your DVD
Watch the project all the way through to ensure smooth playback.
When finished with the preview, click the Exit button on the remote to
 stop previewing the DVD
 3. If you are happy with your result you can now click the Burn Button to
 create the DVD
OR, Like I do, Go to File Save As Disc Image, then you can check the DVD
in DVD Player before you actually burn it to a DVD-R disc.

Re: Keynote DVD

2010-01-16 Thread Laura Webb

Hi Susan, Ronni Rod

Thank you for your input. I did, I think, use Share-Send-iDVD and followed all
the other steps through to Export but then could not work out what happened
after that! Perhaps I should have done the burn from there rather than Finder.

iDVD certainly did not launch automatically as I had expected it would.

I did want to try an audio track but when I went to Media and iTunes, rather
than my playlists showing, it is all individual tracks which was not what I had
in mind, given each one only goes for such a short time. For example I have an
Edith Piaf playlist which I thought would be appropriate for the slides which
are from photos of a cycling trip in France. So maybe I have to go direct to
iTunes rather than use the Media button.

I'll print out all the instructions provided and try again.

Many thanks.

Regards
Laura

Re: Keynote DVD

2010-01-16 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Laura,

When you add a soundtrack to your slideshow, the audio starts playing when the
slideshow starts and plays through to its end, or to the end of the slideshow
(depending on which is longer). You can also choose to have it play through
only once, loop, or play forward and then backward, if you want.
A file added as a soundtrack always plays from its beginning.

To add a soundtrack:
• Click Inspector in the toolbar, and then click the Document inspector
button.
• Click the Audio button.
• Do one of the following:
To add a song or playlist from your iTunes Library, click iTunes Library. Find
the song or playlist you want, and then drag it from the Media Browser to the
Audio well in the Document inspector.

To add an audio file from the Finder, drag it from your desktop to the audio
well in the Document inspector.
• To make the song or playlist play through repeatedly while the
presentation is running, choose Loop from the pop-up menu adjacent to the audio
well.
• To preview the song while you’re working on your slideshow, click the
Play button below the audio well.

Go here http://support.apple.com/manuals/#keynote download the Keynote '09
User Guide.
On Page 101 in the Keynote '09 User Guide, you will find Adding a Soundtrack
to a Slideshow

Re: usb, drives won't load

2010-01-16 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Rosemary,

What version of Disk Utility are you using? It should be version 11.5
If it isn't download install the Combo version overtop of your system.
Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo) http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959

If you do have the correct version of Disk Utility, I would suggest you try
running Disk Utility from another Admin. User Account.
If you don't have another Admin User Account on your MBP, create a temporary
account (you can delete it later if you wish).

If Disk Utility works from the other/new Admin Account, then the problem is in
the your User account.
If the other/new Admin Account also fails, then I'd run it from the SL
Installation DVD.
Just boot from the DVD and after you choose the language, go up to the Menu
bar, Utility's, and run it from there.

I think get Disk Utility working fist then we tackle why external drives are
not mounting.

Running the Combo Update overtop often sorts problems out, especially if
something has been missed in updates.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: charging iPod Touch

2010-01-16 Thread James / Hans Kunz

hi Ronni thanks for that info
it looks alike the keyboeard/ir/trackpad are using only 40ma of the
500ma available, i can imagine that a camera suck the 500ma which
means no further power avaiable on this port, it seems the bluetooth
is switched off thus the 0ma = no load

generally yes not all usb ports are equal
it is a special circuit that controls the power consumption of each
port if the limit is exeeded then this circuit (electronic fuse)
shuts down the power to the port, in most cases causeing failure of
the connected gadget, if a port is not delivering power you may still
use that port for data transfer through an externally powered hub, or
selfpowered units (most printers/harddisks)
in some cases a loose socket causes a failure (would'nt be the first
usb port i resoldered)

cheers James

RE: Bluetooth Magic Mouse

2010-01-16 Thread Crisp, Peter

HI all, I've followed Wendy's tips here and managed to locate and delete
the Bluetooth plist file and then a restart. First time i did this,
functionality was good (Left and Right mouse commands were working). I
still haven't explored the functions of the mouse beyond standard
pointing and Left Right click commands - until I get these reliable, not
a lot of point using it

I then did a software update which in turn required a restart after
the updates. Following this, the mouse reverted to its stubborn self (no
Left or Right mouse commands working) yet moving the mouse around would
move the pointer.

If it try Open mouse preferences I get the little video demo, but
still no Right or Left functioning from the Mouse.

I'm rapidly loosing credibility with SWMBO as it is she who uses the
Macbook.

Any further tips from anyone?

Peter.

Greetings Peter

Not sure if your problems are the same as mine -

I am having problems with Magic Mouse whereby it stopped doing all the
extra things like scrolling and became just an 'ordinary mouse'. Also
looking at the System Preferences Mouse, I no longer got the video
showing how to use the Magic Mouse, instead it just showed ordinary
mouse setups. After three lengthy phone calls with Apple Support, the
third person I spoke with suggested deleting the bluetooth plist in
MacIntosh HD LibraryPreferences and restarting computer. The Magic
Mouse then works properly however, this annoying fix needs to be done
every time I shut down and restart the computer. I am about to speak
with Apple again to see if there is a proper, permanent fix for it.

Hi Peter,

As Wendy said in her reply,
deleting the bluetooth plist in MacIntosh HD LibraryPreferences and
 restarting computer.
The Magic Mouse then works properly however, this annoying fix needs to be
 done
every time I shut down and restart the computer.

Hopefully Apple will have a fix for the Magic Mouse soon.
OS X 10.6.3 is due to be released very soon with a lot of 'fixes'

Just Hang in there Peter

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: charging iPod Touch

2010-01-16 Thread Ronda Brown
Thanks James,

With the iPod Touch ... Inside the ipod Touch is its own charging regulator
circuit. It will only take as much amperage as the battery/regulator will
allow.
Any USB port that can supply at least the correct amount specified current at
the proper regulated voltage will work.

I think on my MacBook Pro the rear USB port, the one nearest the screen, is
in fact already on an internal hub, shared with everything USB inside the case:
the keyboard, the Bluetooth, the trackpad, the iSight camera and the infra-red
receiver. I would suspect that adding a four way hub to this is bound to end
in disaster.

From the Apple Developer Reference Library :

“The USB ports support 500 (mA) at 5 V for 2.5 W power per port. ”
MacBooks and MacBook Pros and Minis are said to have eight USB ports like the
Pros, etc
However, power draw and how it varies across ports, with one port on each
MacBook being the high-power high-current-draw port, is mentioned. (The single
port on the MacBook Air is high-current-draw.)

hi Ronni thanks for that info
it looks alike the keyboeard/ir/trackpad are using only 40ma of the 500ma
available, i can imagine that a camera suck the 500ma which means no further
power avaiable on this port, it seems the bluetooth is switched off thus the
 0ma = no load
generally yes not all usb ports are equal
it is a special circuit that controls the power consumption of each port if
the limit is exeeded then this circuit (electronic fuse) shuts down the power
to the port, in most cases causeing failure of the connected gadget, if a
port is not delivering power you may still use that port for data transfer
through an externally powered hub, or selfpowered units (most
 printers/harddisks)
in some cases a loose socket causes a failure (would'nt be the first usb port
 i resoldered)
 cheers James

 Hi James,

My MacBook Pro, has 3 USB Ports. The one I mentioned below is the High Speed
 USB Port 'Built-in iSight'.
This Port has 500 (mA) Current Available 500 (mA) Current Required.

The USB Port - Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad / IR Receiver
has 500 (mA) Current Available 40 (mA) Current Required.

The USB Port - Bluetooth USB Host Controller
has 500 (mA) Current Available 0 (mA) current required.

This is your field, I don't profess to understand it, I was only pointing
out that All USB Ports are Not Equal.

 hi Ronni
500ma av 500ma req that's really is a tight fit so i'm not suprised if
 there is a on/off/on/off effect..
the required power should be clearly below of what's available for reliable
steady work you say at least which would confirm that my guess is
right, then in the beginning of the charge cycle any charger take more
power then towards the end of a cycle

 Hi James,

This is why I suggested to Kevin to check in System Profiler all his USB
 ports.
System Profiler will show him what the Current Available, Current Required
  speed.
 Similar to this:
 Current Available (mA):500
Current Required (mA): 500
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec

The iPod Touch requires at least 500 mA for proper charging as well as
 voltage within specification.

there is a strong possibility that the usb port you are using delivers
only 100ma which is not enough for recharge, it has nothing to do with
speed only with the 5v power coming out of the usb, high powered
equipment (chargers, harddisks) should not run directly of a usb port any
way..(if you overload the usb port shuts down) a externalpowered
usb hub could be a solution aswell
some dark world pcs front give you the same trouble if you connect to a
 backside port all is fine
try all usb ports i'm sure one gives the power for your recharging

I have tried different USB ports, a powered hub, but no go. Both
machines are running 10.4.11 with plenty of RAM.

Not a big problem, but it is interesting...any ideas for me?
