Re: Fonts in Font Book

2012-06-27 Thread Chris Griffiths
Have you considered a font manager such as Suitcase. I run this manager
(Suitcase 4) and it works flawlessly. I think it's only $130 or something like
that.

I tested running Helv Neue Light overriding the system font and it works fine.
I don't think it can be done with font book.

Otherwise, I have heard that you can write a script to deactivate the system
font but I don't know how to do this. …Others might!

It's the lets start a riot before we know all the details! YAY! Grab your
 pitchforks,...lets go! Apple are evil!!!
The product hasn't even been announced yet! lol.
Sure, I'm sure at first it will be a bit annoying. But as Carlo has
mentioned, I'm sure *someone* will make an adapter. Heck, Apple themselves
might do it! (They did for the new Magsafe2 adapter).
Then the current accessories will keep working. Once you upgrade, or the
product dies. You purchase a new one that has the new 19pin adapter.
Yes it can be annoying at first, but overtime there's probably a good
reason for it. Make a smaller adapter/charger then find it works with xyz
and wow, it's the best thing ever!! :o)
I have Dock connector extender already for my iPhone. Because it has a case
and sits in a Universal charger, it won't fit with the case on. Rather then
taking the case off all the time, I simply bought a Dock extender. Now it
sits in the charger fine, and I can keep the case on. Works great. Sure,
cost me a little bit more then just having the Universal Dock. But hey, it
does all the things I want it to do with the iPhone.

And I'm sure the flip side of this, if Apple made a larger iPhone to
house everything and keep the current adapter we'd see headlines saying
Apple iPhone too big to carry around. (ok, I'd be rubbish at writing
 headlines,...but you get my point,...lol) :)
Sure, we don't always agree with everything that Apple do (I'm at that
point with still trying to decide on the current 15, but I won't go there
again). But over time, there's normally a reason for it. Perhaps not just
 straight away. (3.5 floppies anyone?)

And I'm sure the same will be said with the new (unannounced) iPhone dock
 connector
 Only time will tell.

 Enjoy!!

accessories may not continue to function in the old way and may have to
connect via bluetooth instead. My guess is that simple sound out will
remain on the new connector and may be accessible by an adaptor.

On 04/06/2012, at 9:41 AM, Ronda Brown wrote:

 Hi Lorenzo,

You are correct, Apple did release some early MacPros with
 mislabeling/miswiring problem.
What happened was two wires got mislabeled. This didn’t happen when the
Bluetooth module was added to the computer, but during the actual assembly of
 the Mac Pro.

The Bluetooth module is a small chip placed on the motherboard, and it has to
be connected to a tiny wire that runs to the Bluetooth antenna.

But, I don't think that is the problem with the MacPro Chris has, because the
bad bluetooth connection has only happened lately, not from purchase time. If
Chris is concerned that it could be the wiring, he could take it to a
 technician and have it checked.
Or, I do have a document showing how to fix the wiring.

Distance certainly could cause jerkyness, as it has a spasmodic
connection. Bluetooth does not have a long distance reception.
Does it stop being jerky if you move the mouse closer?

Forums have also suggested WiFi interference but surely Apple would have
 thought of that one??

Are you using a 5GHz Wireless Network or a 2.5GHz wireless network?

If you have installed any mouse add-on, uninstall it, especially USB
overdrive (uninstall not just remove the preference panel).

Check a few other things you could try changing and then test to see if
 it helps.

 1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu, then choose Mouse
 from the View menu.
Set the Tracking slider to adjust how fast the pointer moves as you move
 the mouse.

 2. Try using a different surface to see if the tracking improves.

 3. Turn the mouse over and inspect the sensor window.
Use compressed air to gently clean the sensor window if dust or debris is
 present.

Bandwidth intensive devices could also affect tracking.

Re: Jerky Mouse

2012-06-01 Thread Chris Griffiths
Ok…

10.7.4

2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 14Gb Ram MacPro 4 1Tb harddrives internal.
1Tb external for backing up (this is wired, not wireless)

24inch NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB graphics

Mouse has been like this for months. Can't remember when it started. It goes
from working perfectly to lagging when moving, slightly jerky. Just barely
perceptible sometimes but extremely annoying when you have to do a very fine
photoshop retouch or anything fine.

Forums have suggested that it could happen when there is a lot of processing
happening but this doesn't seem to make sense to me.

Daniels suggestion that it is too far away makes more sense but it can't be
more than a metre. And anyhow, how come it is fine and then changes?

I have turned off any other bluetooth.

Forums have also suggested WiFi interference but surely Apple would have
thought of that one??

I can live with it but just thought I'd give you guys a challenge ;)

Thanks heaps

Re: Jerky Mouse

2012-06-01 Thread Chris Griffiths
I'm using a Belkin N300 300Mbps

I have my iphone between the MacPro and the mouse.

I use a 6MHz phone but only just bought it.

You see, I can't even reply to your testing as it is working perfectly again!!

Next time it jerks I will move it closer.

Tried changing mouse mats etc no difference. I think it is software related.

Distance certainly could cause jerkyness, as it has a spasmodic connection.

Check a few other things you could try changing and then test to see if it
 helps.

 1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu, then choose Mouse from
 the View menu.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

Re: Mail attachments to PC

2011-04-05 Thread Chris Griffiths
I have exactly the same issue.

I zip my files and send. Then ask them to email me back to check they have them.

It's only an issue with Jpgs. I think it just standard for Microsoft programs
to imbed all RGB jpgs.

Don't think there is any other workarounds.

I'd also be grateful to know other ways.

Chris, I have this issue with Mail also when it comes to single-page image
files. I'm not sure why, but a couple of workarounds:

Right-click and Compress the image file, ie. convert to a zip file, before
attaching. This usually works, although there's a chance that the recipient's
mail filters treat the zip file as suspicious. Some corporates don't allow
 incoming zip files at all.

If sending a single page image file in a format which does handle multiple
pages, such as pdf of tiff, add a blank page (Preview can handle this) so
that you send a two-page document to the recipient.

Happy to hear of easier workarounds and some insight into the underlying
 cause.

Yes, I to have this issue. I zip everything I send to Windows users.
That way they get it.

Generally don't have any problems with jpgs, word docs or pdfs.

And it has nothing to do with Send as Window friendly attachment.

Hope this helps.

Re: Brother colour laser printers

2010-09-20 Thread Chris Griffiths
My wife has a dance school and we bought Brother printers because they
were cheap and we just needed a stop gap until we could afford more
efficient, expensive printers. This proved to be a big mistake. For
the cost of the cartridges over a 3 month period we spent at least
twice what a 'good' printer would cost. The Brothers turned out to be
VERY expensive. One day I said enough is enough and literally
unplugged the Brothers and through them in the bin and replaced them
with one Xerox ($550, cartridges $185 or so). Do you know that we have
not had to replace the cartridge (apart from the original; they are
always low with toner) since we bought it. Brilliant!

Hope this helps

Hi Chris,

Are you running the latest software on the iPhones? Settings
General About - Version 3.1.3?

The mic is on the bottom right hand side (Speaker is the other
grille on bottom left).

It's not being obscured by a finger, or a case at all is it!
You haven't put the call on Speakerphone?

Re the Dropouts.

1. Reseat SIM card by removing from iPhone and placing it back in
and then test

2. Call carrier and ask if they are working on your area.

Cheers,

I'm sure the people close to the top a Apple, and the members of
the iPhone software development team know the reasons, but outside
of that, we can only speculate. I'm certain that it has something
to do with performance issues, battery life and any number of other
associated reasons. I'm equally certain that the whole situation
regarding flash-like behaviour will change as the web industry
begins to adopt HTML5. In the meantime, you still have your
computer...

I agree with you Paul.

It won't be long before traditional print will be a rarity especially

Offset print will decline rapidly. I have even seen it in the last few

presses a lot less and some have even stopped some presses. Now if you
know about these presses you know how much it costs to stop and start

I guess I wasn't talking about the romantic young couple. Yes, I can

Apple have not done much on previous models except for update

In fact single CPU has taken a 1200 price hike and reduced available
memory, still no Blu-Ray. Especially now that the argument has been
sorted. Still looks unlikely to connect to that super IO highway
via Serial ATA which is a necessity when burning Blu Ray disks.

So people will be weighing up what one can get on the other side of
fence, or searching for alternatives. But, there is a lot of bang
for your buck as High End Desktops are concerned; price comparison
is tangible.

I know my current situation will not modify much, although the
higher prices mean a larger tax relief if one can sustain income
levels. Something I think we all are asking ourselves at moment,
whilst reducing or sustaining charges to clients. A task made more
difficult when governments are asking for restraint, as necessary
services are reporting substantial increases into the near future.

This will test Apple faithful as alternatives are on the surface
substantially cheaper, but productivity and relevant software
becomes an issue. Something I believe in many circumstances the gap
has closed, but certain industries have some variance or substantial
increases to change. Then there is the Hackintosh factor

As a loyal Apple user for sometime now it gets disconcerting when
Apple does not support local market. Yes I know we are a little blip
on their radar, direct importation could make machinery little more
competitive. Something Dell, HP, Sun, and other specialist US based
companies have been doing for a while now, reference their US
pricing against local?

Disappointed with upgrades, Apple missed an opportunity to move to
the next level in digital media production. Life cycle of my current
machinery to be extended, whilst utilising other alternatives to
fill in an ever growing HD market. Alas the wait for HD - Blu Ray
compatible FCP and DVD Pro looks like being a long time coming, oh
well back to the many variations of achieving desired results. Sorry
Apple!!!

If you are going to have different Mail Accounts, you could try this:

Turn that option off. (Uncheck in iTunes - Mail Accounts Sync

On your iPhone, you will set up your own MM account and the other

Hi Everyone,

Just printing a business card from InDesign on my G5 Dual 2Ghz with
3.5Gb Ram and I notice it takes 10 seconds or so just to bring up the
printing dialog box. I was waiting till Macworld to update to a new
Mac Pro maybe with the new Intel chips in them but they were a no show

So what should I do? Should I wait a month or so and hope a new Mac
Pro will rear it's head, should I buy an iMac 24 Dual 3Ghz (as a
temporary fix) or should I just buy the Mac Pro that's around now.
It's just that I have waited 6 months for the new Mac Pro's new
Cinema Screens and now I just don't know if I should wait. You see
it's costing me in time waiting for my old mac to process projects.

Stumped.

If you decide that you can't wait you may want to look at building a

Pop, are you able to throw a query out to the WAMUG for me please?

I am considering an iPhone and whilst I am confident it can do all
of the fancy things – app downloads etc, I want to be able to
locally synch my email, contacts and calendar to the iPhone using
the Bluetooth connection DIRECT TO THE LAPTOP – ie NOT WiFi via the
Phone service provider. I use Outlook 2003 and not exactly sure
which version of Exchange Server exists but at least a starting
question. I am interested to know if anyone has actually done it
this way – as opposed to someone saying “well it should be ok” – as
that doesn’t prove anything for me.

Let me know if you know what I mean and if you’re able to flick it
out to the Mac community that would be great to see any responses of
affirmative proof.

Attach that to your email to them, and they will get it as an

Basically all I need is an unlocked handset, as it will be for use on
Etislat www.etisalat.ae in the UAE.

Optus FAQ states...

-
The iPhone 3G will be locked to the Optus Network.

If you connect the iPhone 3G to a Post-Paid (on account) contract
you are
able to unlock the handset by calling Optus Customer Service. No
unlocking

fee is applicable.

With Optus Pre-Paid an $80 fee applies if network locking is removed
within
the first 6 months from the activation date. Alternatively, the
customer

needs to have recharged up to the value of $80.
-

So I interpret this as that an unlocked version of the iPhone would
cost me

$80 more than buying the just the handset itself. Correct? Is there a
cheaper option?

I don't like the idea of being a guinea pig - there's gotta be
someone out
there who's tested this already, ie. an Optus-sold unlocked iPhone
on a

foreign network?

Why is it that only Optus sell an unlocked version (if that is still

So maybe there will be queues.

Good marketing strategy. A little bit like owning a restaurant and

Don't know about queues though. Seems like a lot of people are

Since the Apple resellers aren't selling the iPhone, it's the

likely to be any queues of Apple fans at these shops?

Re: Skype audio quality

2007-10-10 Thread Chris Griffiths
I've often encountered the same thing. I'm wondering whether it has
to do with the differing connection speeds. In other words, if I am
on 512 and my caller is on 256 the caller breaks up and I'm clear.
Because I noticed that when we were both on 512 we had no problems.

Having been unhappy with iMovie08 I was then stricken with the will

not export syndrome with iPhoto08.
This is well documented on MacFixit and elsewhere and is apparently

due to plugin problems with addon plugins that are brought in at
installation from the previous version. In my case a trashing of
iPhoto and an effective clean reinstallation solved the problem.
Others may have a period of tooth gnashing and head scratching so
hope this helps.
Apart from a real dumbing down of the capabilities of iMovie, which

the special download of iMovie HD for 08 takes care of, I am only

mildly enthusiastic about iLife08 - it seems pointed fair and square

at the easy canned options approach, which is fine but the more
sophisticated bits should not have been hidden in the process.

Re: Strange iMac

I have a problem with my 20 iMac. When I try to start it up it goes
through the process of starting up i.e. it shows the apple icon and
the spinning wheel then it shows the panel with the big X starting
the system, then it shows the background picture and nothing else. No
dock, no icons nothing but the background pic. Up in the top right
hand corner is a tiny piece of the spotlight icon and when I move the
cursor into that area I get the spinning coloured wheel?
