Re: Video playback slowed down.
Hi everyone - hope you don't mind me jumping on this question with a related issue I have recently purchased a macbook pro 2.8 intel core i7 4gb ram 1333 mhz ddr3 lion 10.7.4 I have used the transfer my mac utility from my older macbook The issue I'm having is that some of the apps are VERY slow - much slower than the old macbook (albeit i did max the ram on that unit). Preview in particular is the worst offender. I have done the obvious - used disk utility to repair permissions and with a 750gb drive with loads of space on it, I can't see anything that is an obvious factor. My web search indicated that sophos may be slowing it down. Would appreciate any suggestions, many thanks in advance (and Ronnie, pls don't stop whatever you are doing to be first to reply ;) Best regards Justin Davies On 22/06/2012, at 11:35 AM, Ronda Brown wrote: Hi Adrian, Something you could try is: Open System Preferences General and uncheck the “Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps” option. People have had success with streaming video in Lion by doing the above. I have not experienced any problem with streaming video in Lion BUT I have always had this setting UNCHECKED! The suspicion is that the background task that takes a snapshot of the memory and system state for each running application is failing behind in taking snapshots when large amounts of RAM are updated. In video streaming by definition the application memory is undergoing large frequent updates. If the suspicion is correct, then instead of dropping work items the snapshot application is trying to process an ever-increasing list of work. The result appears to be CPU starvation to video playback. Thanks Glenn, for a little more information please see http://emergination.com.au/saasu or type saasu perth into google (excuse the blatant plug). Hi all, a quick update on this I complained to nuance about their support, and they relented and provided assistance. I found eventually after plenty of backwards and forwards that getting the volume on the microphone right in system preferences made a difference and I'm now getting good results again. A tip - if you ever want to cut the queue and get something resolved, go straight to twitter. I looked at other products on the market - at that stage ibm's via voice, dragon and macdictate. via voice had ok reviews but macdictate was the one specifically for mac, so it was the logical choice - and had best reviews. In other words, I don't think you have a lot of options Best regards Justin Davies On 12/06/2011, at 8:46 PM, Stuart Breden wrote: I am trailing Dragon Dictate but not with much success. Re: keynote issues
Thanks Ronni! Best regards Justin On 14 Apr 2011, at 5:07 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: I can understand your frustration. Hopefully iWork'11 won't be long will have much needed improvements. /Quote: Given that it has been more than 2 years since the launch of iWork ’09, will an update be coming soon or will Apple simply wait until OS X 10.7 Lion is launched in the Summer. The reasoning behind this is as follows. There are several new features that are being incorporated into the next version of OS X that could be fairly integral components of how iWork ’11 will operate. Therefore Apple may not launch iWork ’11 until the new features can be utilized by users running 10.7 Lion. The primary feature which is likely to be of the most use in iWork ’11 is the use of Lion’s AutoSave and Versions features. As its name suggests, Versions records the evolution of a document as you create it’. Therefore, if you wish to revert to an earlier version, Lion brings up a Time-Machine like screen to allow you to select which one you want. Similarly, if you shut down an application, the AutoSave and Resume feature will automatically reopen where you left off. It is likely that this will somehow be expanded and tightly integrated within iWork ’11. The second feature relates to the AirDrop and sharing features. AirDrop allows you to share files with anyone around you wirelessly, something that would be incredibly useful in iWork ’11. In addition, recent rumors are suggesting that Apple will be relaunching MobileMe this year with a much greater emphasis on cloud storage and sharing. It is likely that this will be a big component in iWork ’11 and another reason why we haven’t seen it up until now. Apple has already dipped into this with the iWork.com beta but we may see a lot more functionality when it finally launches There are also more minor new features of Lion, like full screen apps (a feature already implemented in iWork ’09), more Multi-Touch gestures and enhanced security, which could add functionality to iWork ’11. Of course, Apple would obviously not make iWork ’11 exclusively compatible with OS X Lion, but rather may choose to take advantage of new features in Lion that aren’t available in Snow Leopard. Given that Apple is preparing for a launch of Lion in the Summer, is it reasonable to expect iWork ’11 at the same time? /End Quote http://www.applebitch.com/2011/03/11/opinion-iwork-11-on-the-same-day-as-os-x-10-7-lion/ Cheers, Ronni Sent from Ronni's iPad On 14/04/2011, at 4:39 PM, Justin Davies m...@justindavies.com.au wrote: Many thanks for your prompt response Ronni, I found that i couldn't export from keynote and then open with powerpoint 2008 for mac - yet was always able to do so before. If you have GPS enabled and the posting process you use embeds the location in its EXIF then yes this information will be posted. And as we all know with sites like FaceBook there is, really, no such thing as true, effective, privacy of data posted there. You might find that what ever service you post your image up to will by default strip the EXIF data out or minimalise it (like with pBase's images) or it may be that the program you use to upload does much the same (ie lightroom has a minimalise EXIF option on its export and upload functions). One thing to note is that different GPS/Cameras work differently indoors. As GPS satellite signals can't penetrate very well once you walk indoors (or even under heavy tree cover (and in fact even sometimes under really heavy cloud cover)) your GPS loses the signal. Some cameras just continue to tag all the images you took as being at the last known GPS lock, other cameras will tag the location as unknown. Personally I think this is a very useful function but something that should be disabled by default. I shoot with DSLR's which are, both fortunately and unfortunately, at this point built in GPS free so to gain this function I need to carry a separate GPS unit and then link the time data on the image to the time/location data on the GPS's log. But I certainly would not want this function by default and as yet have not used this with any uploaded images. The E-02 error indicates that a cartridge is expended or not installed properly. You have stated that you have reseated it and are getting the same error. The printer should have an arrow pointing to which cartridge is giving you the error. If it is the same one you just reinstalled, there is a good chance that the contacts on the cartridge are defective and you need to bring it back to where you purchased it and exchange it for another cartridge. Once you get the new cartridge, install it and that should take care of the problem. You can also go into the print software and check the levels of the other cartridges -- if one is empty it may be causing this error. What happens is when you reseat a new cartridge it will charge the cartridge -- prime it, flush ink through it, then set it. After the printer ran this diagnostic, it may have used up the last of another color cartridge's ink. You can check the other ink levels by clicking the printer icon down near the clock in the task bar and going to the printing preferences' maintenance tab status monitor. You can also access it by clicking start / control panel / printers faxes / right click on printer icon / printing preferences / maintenance tab / status monitor. If you are still having a problem, you can call Epson technical support at (XXX)XXX-. Be sure to get your serial number which is located near the ink cartridges. It is an number beginning with JGJY. Can't do Blueray, but the current Macminis can't either. My old Macmini has 4 USB ports. I use one for the keyboard/mouse, and one for the EyeTV stick. A slightly expensive, but very useful extra to an EyeTV, Mac, Toast setup is a screen colour calibrator. Makes colours much more vibrant on my system, which uses a 24 Samsung monitor as the screen. Should give even better results on a HDMI-driven TV screen because TVs screen makers tend not to worry too much about rendering colours very accurately. Just compare the pictures on the various screens running the same p[program in your local TV retailer. But to incorporate itunes, iphoto, internet capability, avi file (and other file types) DVD playback and perhaps others by piggybacking a macmini into the mix, sounds like something that will give me access to some of my media which is slightly inaccessible currently and some further functionality that I have never experienced on the home TV platform. Below you note about burning off to DVD using Toast. Does the macmini have a burner on board or is it an external attachment? How many USB ports does the macmini have? Can it accommodate the eyetv dongle as well as an external drive/burner attached if that is what's required? Can it function with a hub if I need multiple USB ports? I had anticipated up till now an Apple TV would give me what I want (with the atv hack of course and maybe an attached external drive for mega capacity) but maybe the Macmini approach will give me all this and more than the Apple TV will give for around the same or even a little more $$'s. No, this is not correct. I've never experienced any problems using Firewire Target Disk Mode Migration Assistant to Transfer data from one Mac to another. When you do the migration, you should do it as soon as you first boot up the new Mac and it offers you the options. Don’t create a user account and then do the migration, since if both accounts have the same name you will run into problems. If you migrate your account off the old Mac (or clone) it will transfer seamlessly to the new Mac, together with Preferences and most of the registrations. I’ve done this with Intel Macs as the destination PPC Macs as the source. The process has always worked perfectly. A few people have hinted that PPC to Intel migrations may somehow be problematic but I have not seen anything credible about any specific problems that can be directly attributed to using Setup Assistant / Migration Assistant for this. The only precaution I always suggest is to make sure the older Mac is working properly (no issues/problems) to run Disk Utility’s “Repair Disk” on its drive before starting the migration. (Note that this will require starting it up from an installer disc or other bootable disk with Disk Utility on it.) Also, take the time to organise the old Mac's files folders uninstall obsolete applications, delete old documents that are no longer required, update applications , etc. In other words … Prepare to upgrade from to an Intel Machine and Snow Leopard beforehand. What I believe you are referring to above, is my comments to you after you posted this to WAMUG: Quote: I’ve migrated the information from my old G5 iMac to a new Intel 21.5-inch: 3.06GHz 500GB hard drive iMac. Not every thing migrated. End Quote: So I pointed you to these comments made by 'Kappy' http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1872713 But I have never found using Firewire Target Disk Mode Migration Assistant on booting up a new machine not to transfer everything I select across to the new machine. When I got my latest Intel iMac fro work, I let the Apple show do it using the the function when you turn on a new iMac for the first when it ask if you want to import data from another Mac. I imported a few problems and am still trying to sort them out. If there are any problems on the old Mac they will transfer across to the new Mac. I'm about to upgrade from my home PowerPC G5 to an Intel iMac. Will have a good look at Rhonda's suggestion on her web site. Hi Glenn, I had a different problem with Macspeech in that I ended up with lots of profiles. This happens when the profile is stored inside a dropbox folder or similar. Not sure if this is your issue - however I found the macspeech people responsive when I lodged the issue with them. I'm using the plantronics headset that came with the unit. For some strange reason login hooks and logout hooks are stored in /var/root/library/preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist. of course, not many people use those but if you do use them and completely delete /var/root/library then any login and logout hooks will disappear. Re: migration assistant problem
Neil, and Susan, thanks for your detailed responses. Indeed turned out to be user accounts. After wiping the hard drive and reinstalling, all seems to be running spot on. Thanks again for your help. Best regards Justin Davies m...@justindavies.com.au On 29 Nov 2009, at 10:29 AM, Neil Houghton wrote: Hi Justin, I think this problem is usually when you set-up the new computer with a user account that is not exactly the same as on the old machine the folders with the red negative file are what you see if you try and look at another users folders. If you used migration assistant to migrate user folders then you should have the same user accounts as the old machine and so need to log into them using the (old) usernames and passwords. If you just use the default mac options when first setting up a new machine then that all usually happens pretty seamlessly. If you first set-up the new machine with a fresh owners account and then use migration assistant to bring things (other user accounts/ folders) over then you can run into problems if you are not exactly clear how the accounts are defined and set-up. Personally, I have several different computers (a couple of iMacs and a laptop) each has user accounts for both myself and my spouse. As a result I have need to transfer the user accounts around from time to time so what I do is just set-up a fresh owner account (called computer admin or some such thing) on each machine at first set-up and everytime I do a fresh system install these accounts just stay as admin accounts with no personal data etc then I can migrate user accounts from machine to machine as I see fit the admin accounts never get migrated and so variations in the admin account name/details are not important. Note that this approach will not suit many people you need to be careful to keep track of what is current in any user account from machine to machine but we each tend to use one of the iMacs as out personal computer and then just bring the laptop up to speed for the occasional trip away if we used the laptop more often I would look to just set-up some form of user folder synchronisation (as discussed in many WAMUG postings). However, if you are just migrating successively from an old machine to a new machine, you are probably best just going the simple Apple route and letting the set-up assistant take care of everything. If you are not sure exactly what you have done in terms of setting up new users and migrating old ones over then, providing that all the info is still on the old machine and you havent yet started creating new data on the new machine, you might be best just starting again restore the new machine using the disk(s) provided and then on first start-up let the initial set-up bring everything over from the old machine. You should repair permissions on the old machine before you start and, of course, it goes without saying that you should have back-ups of everything before you start! Also, there have been many previous WAMUG postings by Ronni and other WAMUG gurus (much more experienced and knowledgeable than myself) covering tips precautions covering system installations, updates, migrations etc check out the archives. I am hoping that listers may have some of this RAM in the shed gathering dust and may be willing to donate it to this cause. I have plenty of the DDR RAM used in later models. I have plenty of 32 and 64Mb sticks of either PC100 or PC133 RAM, but nothing larger to enable these machines to effectively run 10.3 or 10.4. Second hand PC133 RAM is very expensive. Once again I can assure listers that the machines from this project are given absolutely free to needy people. To date I have placed around 30 Macs in homes and organisations and have seen the results bearing fruit. regards Kevin 94183869 -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

I have heard that 3 Mobiles will be very good. In regard to your time frame, if your existing contract comes to an end on July 30, you can choose to continue to pay monthly without committing to another contract. Carriers do use the end of contract time to 'coerce' you into signing a new contract, and sometimes it is worth it if they throw in a discount or free handset. The last Telstra contract I had I left running for about 3 months after then end before switching to Vodafone. The main reason was that they left it until the last month of my contract to tell me I could save money on a lower cost plan when they could have switched me over 6 months earlier! Keyboard - powerbook doesn't recognise it straight away
Hi wamuggers, got a small but frustrating problem - each time I shut down my powerbook or disconnect the external keyboard, I have to connect the keyboard 3 times before it recognises it and allows me to type. The mac mouse which is connected to the keyboard works no problem however. I have a powerbook g4, latest os and it is a mac keyboard. Interestingly I never had this problem with a dell keyboard I used to plug in into the powerbook. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated... Keyboard
Hi James, Ronnie, thanks very much for your responses. The keyboard could be power hungry as I have a mouse plugged in to the left usb socket in the keyboard and a printer plugged into the right. I only connect the keyboard when I have the laptop connected to mains power. I had no trouble with the Dell keyboard on currently os. As to why I use an external keyboard, it is a question of ergonomics. Any ergonomist will tell you that typing directly onto a laptop keyboard for extended periods of time eg all day, and particularly looking down at the laptop screen will eventually lead to posture problems, loads of back and neck pain, and forearm soreness as well. You don't see laptop only setups often in corporates any more as a result. For the small amount that they cost, you should get one too. Definitely better to type on IMHO. Thanks for input thus far... Justin maybe the keyboard is power hungry thus it appears unreliable, i have seen that sort of problems on windows machines where on the front only certain memory stick worked, some othere got slow after connecting them to the backside socket they worked on full speed just something: can you borrow a mains powered usb hub try the keyboard with that oneJames On 26/05/2009, at 16:45, Ronda Brown wrote: Hi Justin, I'm intrigued ... why are you using an external keyboard on your PowerBook? I can 'sort of' understand why some people prefer to use an external mouse instead of the trackpad, but an external keyboard on a laptop? Were you using the Dell keyboard in Leopard? I think USB drivers aren't loaded until the OS starts up. Are you allowing enough time for the operating system to fully boot up. I wonder if it's not getting power quick enough to the USB port for both keyboard and mouse? saasu
Hi, I replied to the accounting software question but see it didn't make to the list, so trying again, apologies if came through previously. Best acctg software IMHO is saasu.com - it is web based, significantly better than myob in my view, scalable to large companies. You can sign up for a free account and use it as long as you like for free provided you use less than 15 transactions per month. YOu can also give your bookkeeper or acct free access to the system too. The software is developed in Australia and building a huge customer following around the world. The founder is a former Perth guy and they run a great company. Really worth the time to check out. I find it easier to use, more logical design. And whilst most of their customers are PC platform these guys develop on mac Hope that helps Best regards Justin Davies m...@justindavies.com.au www.justindavies.com.au 0414 567 638 9309 9309 Business website: www.emergination.com.au -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
Monitor and keyboard problems
Hi all, I'm running a G4 Powerbook and I have just bought a 22 samsung monitor plus a mac keyboard. The apple controls seem to have over ridden the monitor settings - as a result I can't adjust the brightness of the monitor (the brigthness buttons on both keyboards only change the laptop screen). I have tried mirroring displays, using the laptop closed so there is only the monitor, as well as my normal setup where I have both the monitor and laptop running. Second problem - the mac keyboard requires me to pull the usb plug out and put it back in again for it to work, which is very unmaclike behaviour. I am running osx 10.5.6 Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Hi, for those Mac fanatics interested in a retro feel, I have a Mac G3 Bronze Powerbook that I am interested in finding a new home for. Request for developer with Java and Mac experience
Hello all, I hope you will forgive the commercial nature of this post, but I am looking for someone who is familiar with Java development on the Mac (most important) and on Windows environment using Sarfari and Netscape/Firefox and IE browsers (with Explorer being more important for the Windows environment given the likelihood that Explorer will disappear from the Mac scene in the not too distant future.) The person must be able to communicate with our clients and existing development team, and be able to work independently. This may be up to a three month contract, and we can pay $50 per hour. The person will have to hand over the application to client staff, therefore must be able to document the design. The ideal candidate will be someone with web enabled applications development experience, but a strong Mac / cross platform bent. This is to compliment part of a significant development contract that we have, currently being developed in .Net with SQL back end. This specific application is to replace an Excel based application that only runs on Windows, hence the Java approach to deliver a single application that will run on both platforms. Web delivery of the application is a mandatory requirement. So, if anyone can assist, or if you know anyone, please do let me know directly at my work address below. Thanks in advance. USB Stick corrupting Powerpoint files
Hi all, I have a USB stick I use to transfer files from my work pc to my mac at home. This works fine with all files bar Powerpoint. If I take a powerpoint file from my pc, put it on the usb stick, put it in the mac, then double click a powerpoint file - whether still on the USB stick or transferred from the USB stick to my mac hard drive - I get the whirling beach ball of death. Force quit doesn't work, so I have to hold the power button down to restart. I have powerpoint 2004 on the mac and 2000 at work. My mac is a G4 powerbook with 10.3.9. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Best regards Justin Davies [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ipod - Itrip frequency for best reception
Hi all, great newsgroup I regularly follow being very much a mac fan Can anyone tell me if they have found a frequency that really works with Itrip / ipod? I find that for at least half of my journey up the freeway i get static on 87.9 which is the default. A colleague of mine simply bought an in car kit that goes into his tape deck. Thanks in advance... Best regards Justin Davies [EMAIL PROTECTED]
