[WAMUG] "But 3 Get 1 free" Update

2023-12-26 Thread Maureen Smith via WAMUG
Hello Fellow WAMUGgers,

I hope you and your loved ones had a happy and relaxing Christmas day and have
not been injured in the rush to get a Boxing Day bargain.

You may remember that an email was sent to the list on the 18th of December
informing you that your Committee had decided that list members who had paid
their membership fees for the past three years, 2021-2023, would have free
membership access for 2024

Today, according to our financial records, I emailed each member to whom this
applied.

For the rest of the list members, remember, ,you can still read list posts and
are always welcome to attend the WAMUG General meetings each month.

If anyone has any queries regarding membership fees, I am happy to assist where
I can

Kind regards,

Maureen

[WAMUG] "Buy3 and get 1 free"

2023-12-18 Thread Maureen Smith via WAMUG
   Hello Fellow WAMUGgers,
At the November Committee Meeting, your Committee decided that list
members who have paid their membership fees for the past three years,
2021-2023, will have free membership access for 2024.
It is the Committee's way of saying thank you for your continued
support. Consider it a “Buy 3 and get 1 free” deal, or perhaps an early
   Christmas present.
We have a record of the members who have paid fees for the past three
years and they will contacted individually via email within the week. I
will notify the mailing list when this occurs.
   Kind regards,
   Maureen

 Hello fellow WAMUGgers,
Do you know the origins of the idiom to "wing it"? To 'wing it'
   means
to make something up as you go along, and it originates in the world
   of
19th-century theatre when actors might be learning their lines at the
last minute while standing in the wings or were on stage and had to
   be
 prompted from the wings.
I have given you this gem of knowledge, not so it may be helpful at
your next quiz night, though that may be true, but because at this
month's General Meeting, the committee is 'winging it.'
We do not have any new software demonstrations, but when we meet, we
can all contribute something that may inspire, help or further
   develop
our knowledge of all some things Apple.

[WAMUG] Tuesday's meeting

   Hello Fellow WAMUGers,

I learn a lot in meetings. For instance, did you know that by bending

1 Available or coming in macOS Sonoma

   2 Airdropping over the internet

   3 Creating a collaborative playlist

   4 A look at a Journal App

brings "new dimension" to users' documents and presentations "with 3D
objects. (Needs Ventura at minimum to work.)

[WAMUG] WAMUG General Meeting

2023-06-04 Thread Maureen Smith via WAMUG
   Hello Fellow WAMUGgers,

I hope you are enjoying your W.A. Day. For most of us, it is a bit wet
(to say the least), and we may be spending our time indoors on our
iPads or Macs or phones doing what we can do so well with Apple
products. This email is to remind you that our meeting is tomorrow,
June 6, at 7:30 pm, and we have some informative topics to help you
gain the most from your devices, especially if you have upgraded to
   Ventura.

If you haven’t yet done so, join the meeting and see what you will be
able to do when you do.

   MEETING TOPICS

1 As usual, we will start with our Q session. So if there are any
questions that haven't been answered on the list ,or you would like to
have a more personalised answer, we will certainly help solve your
   problem - if we can.

We will be demonstrating some more tips and tricks to be found in
   Ventura mail and messages

   2 Mail
 * Unsending mail - Useful for those occasions when you realise, just
after you have clicked Send, that you didn't mean to send it to
   your boss.
 * Scheduling email - Very handy.
 * Rich Links - A way to give your email more context and detail at a
   glance.

   3 Messages
 * How to edit a message up to 15 minutes after you have sent it.
 * How to undo send message after you have sent it.

4 We will be looking at the new Free Form app which is Apple’s new app
designed for idea generation, planning, and collaboration

5 And finally. a look at PowerPhotos app. - This not an Apple app, but
it does work with the built-in Photos app on your Mac, giving you tools
to help you get your photo collection in order

As always, if you have found something nifty that works for you, we
would love to hear about it.

[WAMUG] AGM Meeting

2023-04-18 Thread Maureen Smith via WAMUG
Hello fellow WAMUGgers,

On May 2, we will hold our Annual General Meeting, followed by our normal
monthly meeting. Think of it as a 2fa. (Translation - two for one.)

The AGM will not last long and generally entails the President's and
Treasurer's reports and the election of officials. To have your say and vote
for committee members, you must be a paid-up member of WAMUG. To ensure foreign
interests with large off-shore bank accounts do not hack this auspicious
election process, we have a cut-off date after which only paid-up members can
vote. The date is Thursday, April 27 2023

Please be aware that you can join WAMUG at any time but can only vote in the
2023 WAMUG elections if payment has been received by April 27.

Now onto the voting. (I feel as if I am channelling the AEC)

To cast your vote, you need people to vote for. It's simply Democracy 101. The
task of being a committee member is not onerous. We will not be mounting
special operations to take over other organisations.

It does involve attending monthly committee meetings, but these can be done via
Zoom if members cannot travel or do not live in Perth. But the essential part
of being a committee member is giving input and ideas. You do not have to be
knowledgeable about Apple products and software - I am testament to that.

Please think about joining, even just for 12 months.

If you want to become a committee member, help fellow members and wave
minuscule amounts of power. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to
contact me via my personal email address.

Cheers,

Maureen Smith

[WAMUG] WMAU General Meeting includes Photos, ChatGPT, & Infinite Macintosh

2023-04-01 Thread Maureen Smith via WAMUG
   Hello WAMUGers.

I hope you escape unscathed from any April Fools jokes. Most jokes
these days are online, and the Washington Post has a tradition of
debunking many brand and celebrity 'pranks' they can find. Check these
out for yourself and see if you would have been caught out. The Post
   ruins April Fools' Day, 2023
   edition [1]https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-entertainment/2023/04/0
   1/april-fools-pranks-hoaxes-2023/

When you have finished, you should turn your attention to some real
online information that is not foolish, promotional or a hoax. It is
   WAMUG's April General Meeting.

   Our agenda for this month.

 * Q

 * 'Saving Photos" (We did not cover this in March's meeting. We hope
this'll be a discussion rather than a presentation, as each of us
has a way that works for us of saving and organising these
memories. If attendees want to show what they do, it's easy to do
with Zoom. The conversation could range from a digital shoebox
collection to the ultimate catalogue method using Apple's Photos
app. I am sure there will be something for everyone

 * ChatGPT- a brief look. How it could work for you.

 * Infinite Macintosh - If you remember (or are curious about) using

[WAMUG] WAMUG General Meeting

2023-03-05 Thread Maureen Smith via WAMUG
   Hello Fellow WAMUGers,

Depending on when you read this, I hope you are enjoying, or have
enjoyed, this long weekend. I am letting the List know I can attend
this month's General Meeting. I thought it would clash with the other
group I have joined, the Perth Local Time Travel Group. Fortunately,
they postponed their meeting until last Tuesday.

So, I will be zooming in to hear and, hopefully, contribute to our
WAMUG General Meeting on Tuesday 7th, March. (Again, depending on when
you read this messages tomorrow or today). Zoom will be open from 7:15
pm for a 7:30 pm start.

Besides our Q session at the start, we will be looking at Parking
Apps, as we didn't get to cover that in the last meeting. Following
that, will be a discussion on how we save our photos. Attendees will
have the opportunity to explain how they save and organise their
photos, and if they wish, they can demonstrate by presenting their
screens. (Something that's easy to do on Zoom.)

The conversation could range from a digital shoebox collection to the
ultimate catalogue method using Apple's Photos app. I am sure there
   will be something for everyone.

[WAMUG] February's meeting

2023-01-28 Thread Maureen Smith via WAMUG
   Hello WAMUGgers,

Christmas has passed, the New Year festivities are over, and Australia
Day has been and gone. If you are feeling the post-celebration blues,
don't despair. There is a celebratory event on the horizon.

WAMUG's first meeting for 2023 is just nine days away. Yes, our first
member's meeting will take place on Tuesday, 7 February. So mark the
   date in your calendar.

WAMUG general meetings are open to WAMUG members and their friends and
list subscribers. If you know someone who might want to join in, please
send them the meeting details. (Just no horses. Experience has found
they are so negative in meetings, such neigh-sayers.)

   Meeting Format

As usual, we will begin with general greetings followed by question
time, and then 'show, tell and ask topics.'

   This month's topics are

 * Phone parking apps - their uses, security etc.

 * Revisiting the application Keychain.

   How it works,

Why you should use it and

Do you need another password manager app?

 * Using QR codes on your macs

These ubiquitous black-and-white, two-dimensional barcodes were
designed to be accessed using smartphone devices. But what if you have
a mac? Tune into our meeting to find out.

So mark the date in iCal and set a reminder. We look forward to seeing
   you.

[WAMUG] December's WAMUG General Meeting

2022-12-03 Thread Maureen Smith via WAMUG
   Hello Fellow WAMUGgers

We are now in the run up to Christmas.

 * Stores are getting busier.
 * Musak has been replaced by Christmas songs.
 * Red and green decorations abound with sprinklings of artificial
   snow.
 * And ….. it is time for our last General Meeting of 2022.

Join us this Tuesday, 6th December at 7:30 over Zoom for some knowledge
   gathering and Christmas cheer.

   TOPICS

1. This month our esteemed President, Peter, will take us through
Raycast, a free productivity launcher helps you complete tasks,
calculations, etc easily and quickly without having to open various
   applications.

1. We will also do an overview of the Version 2 Affinity Suite of
products which is proving to be a worthy competitor for Adobe. For
a limited time you can purchase a Universal Licence for the entire
Affinity Suite. Although this may not be something you are likely
to use, if you have friends, staff or children who use Adobe
Products invite them to attend the meeting.

[WAMUG] November's General Meeting

2022-10-30 Thread Maureen Smith via WAMUG
   Hello fellow WAMUGgers,

We will hold our general meeting this Tuesday, the first Tuesday of the
month. There is something else on that day but I cannot think what it
might be. Obviously not as important as our meeting if it has skipped
   my mind. (Hee Hee)
I know some members who could not attend last month's meeting submitted
questions and did not receive an answer. This is due to the differences
in styles of email and meeting communications.
Questions asked in a face-to-face or electronic meeting such as Zoom
allow everyone to interact, to go back and forth, saying "No, no,
that's not what I mean", or "Is this what you mean"? Questions asked at
meetings allow us to check our understanding before answering and
   enable others to contribute.
So if anyone has questions and cannot attend the meeting, post them to
the list. I apologise if this sounds harsh, there is no intention to
offend anyone. We can discuss such questions, but it is a moot effort
if the questioner is not present to hear the answers.
   Below are the meeting details.
   WAMUG General Meeting
   Agenda includes
   1 Q & A time - send your questions to the list.
2 A overview of the changes to Apple's books
   3 Zoom tips

   Hello Fellow WAMUGgers,
Our next Users Group Meeting will be this coming Tuesday, 4 October,
   via Zoom.

As mentioned in a post on the list on 5 September, the committee often
needs help to come up with topics for our meetings, which is certainly
   the case this time.
So …… we are asking our members two things.
1 Any suggestions from you regarding discussion ideas or topics?
They do not have to be groundbreaking or complicated. Often a question
develops into a discussion and learning for us all.

[WAMUG] Users Group Meeting

2022-09-28 Thread Maureen Smith via WAMUG
Hello Fellow WAMUGgers,

Our next Users Group Meeting will be this coming Tuesday, 4 October, via Zoom.

As mentioned in a post on the list on 5 September, the committee often needs
help to come up with topics for our meetings, which is certainly the case this
time.

So …… we are asking our members two things.

1 Any suggestions from you regarding discussion ideas or topics? They do
not have to be groundbreaking or complicated. Often a question develops into a
discussion and learning for us all.

2 If you have learnt something new or have an app, are you willing to
share this with others? No great expertise is necessary; ask those who have
seen some of my demos.

Meeting details will come out shortly.

Users Group Meeting

Cheers,

Maureen Smith

2022-06-16 Thread Maureen Smith
Hi Rosemary,

We are still having the meetings on the 1st Tuesday of each month. I am not
sure what happened last month.

A message was sent to the list on the Monday prior to the meeting. It included
the usual instructions. I saw your email about the meeting in the evening and
sent a reply.

I will check in with you before the next meeting to see if you have received
the next meeting announcements.

Cheers,

Maureen

[WAMUG] WAMUG Members meeting Tues 7 June 2022

2022-06-06 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello Fellow WAMUGgers,

I hope you have had a relaxing long weekend. Now the WA Day celebrations are
over it is time to focus on the normalities of the week, among them being our
monthly Members’ Meeting.

The topic for this week has a ’holiday’ feel about it. We talking about a
Safari. Not the African variety more the orchard kind. (Apples specifically.)
We will be looking at how you can extend your Safari as well as investigating
Tab Groups, Pin Tabs, and the Translate function.

If you are like me and keep using computer and software tools that you always
use because you just don’t have the time to explore, this could be a meeting
for you.

As usual, it will be via zoom. There will be opportunities to ask questions
that may not have been answered on the list, or any others that come to mind,
at the beginning of the meeting

[WAMUG} Christmas Present to you

2021-12-27 Thread Maureen Smith

IHello Fellow WAMUGgers,

On behalf of the Committee, I hope you all had a relaxing Christmas with family
and friends and, if you are experiencing the heat, you can keep cool.

Did you know the 12 Days of Christmas actually starts on Christmas Day and
lasts until the night of January 5th? So if the Committee were to follow the
song's list of gifts, we would be sending each of you today "Three French
hens." However, with Australia Post closed for four days, we though it a tad
unwise to attempt to post livestock.

But .. we do have a gift for you. We have decided to REDUCE our annual
membership fee to $20:00.

At a recent Committee meeting, a reduction in fees was proposed. COVID has
seen the demise of the monthly General ‘face to face’ meetings. Instead, we
have continued using Zoom. Because we are not physically meeting, we no longer
have to pay for third party insurance, the most significant annual expenditure.
So the Committee decided to reduce membership fees.

Although anyone can join the list, only paid members can post queries and
answers. WAMUG annual fees are payable from 1 January, 2022.

So next time you hear the 12 days of Christmas, instead of singing "Three
French hens, " Change it to RE-DU-CED FEES.

Cheers & keep safe.

Final Call - Subscription & AGM

2016-03-06 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello Wonderful WAMUGgers,

I hope you are having - or have had, depending on when you read this- a
relaxing long weekend, with no demerits for driving and lots of fruit -
especially apples.

Two reminders

1 If you have been meaning to pay for your subscription but have just not
got around to it yet, then it would be advisable to do so ASAP.
The elves that work behind the scenes will be moderating list members on
Thursday 10th March.

AGM - Please read

2016-02-20 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello Fellow WAMUGgers,

All members, and their loved ones (or your favourite enemy, provided you don’t
fight), are invited to the combined WAMUG AGM and LUNCH.

Time - 12:00pm

Place - Mt Lawley Golf Club, 1/ Walter Road Western Australia 6052.

Dress Code - “Smart Casual is accepted with dress shoes. ( Jeans and cargo
pants, things, runners and T-shirts are not acceptable.)”

Cost - Members $21.00 Non members $31.00.

In order to confirm the number of people attending, it would be appreciated if

a) Payment be made by electronic transfer, as you have done when paying
your memberships-

NAME : Western Australian Macintosh Users Group
BSB : 306-075
ACCOUNT: 4197787
NB - Please quote your name in the reference area .

b) Please inform me via email that you are attending, and if bringing
guests, how many.

Last year we had a similar format, and the opportunity to socialise, put names
to faces, enjoy a good meal and not have to wash the dishes afterwards, was
appreciated by those who attended. I am sure it will be the same this year.

As I mentioned in my email - Save the Date, Jan 24, - over the last few years
we have battled to have sufficient members attending to comprise a quorum and
without a quorum there is no meeting.

The committee has been working on changes to our Constitution which will allow
a reduction in the number of members required for an AGM and will allow for
proxy voting on issues, so members who cannot attend AGMs and Special General
Meetings can still have a say in the group’s decision making . Information
concerning these changes will be emailed to members within the next three days.
however, in order for these changes to be voted upon, we need you to attend.

Any queries, please do not hesitate to enquire and remember -

For want of a quorum the meeting was lost.
For want of a meeting the committee was lost.
For want of a committee, the list was lost.
For want of the list, WAMUG was lost.
For want of WAMUG, apple users were lost.
For want of apple users, the world was lost.
All for the want of a quorum.

Cheers,

Save the Date

2016-01-23 Thread Maureen Smith

Hello Wonderful WAMUGgers,

Your committee held it’s first meeting for the year and on the agenda was the
Annual AGM.

Those who have been members for a number of years will be aware that the last
few years we have battled to have sufficient members attending to comprise a
quorum. There are a number of factors both personal and organisational that no
doubt contribute to the decline in numbers.

The committee has been working on addressing this issue but it is a bit of a
Catch 22. We need to have people attend the AGM in order to change the
attendance requirements in our Constitution.

This year the AGM will be held on Sunday 13th March at 12:00pm at a location
TBA. It will be a combination of the AGM followed by a chance to socialise
over a meal. Loved ones are also welcome.

Please take the time to place this date in your iCal. We really need you!

More information will be coming out via the list.

Annual Member Fee Payment

2016-01-19 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello fellow WAMUGgers,

Headlines Just In!

Road Rage is on the increase after a few quiet weeks!

AM & PM peak hours are becoming fuller!

Publicity for upcoming television programmes are on the increase!

Hot Cross Buns are now on sale!

These are headlines are indications that the festive season is well and truly
over and we can now tackle those 2016 goals and aspirations.

Hopefully, one of your goals is to continue your subscription to this wonderful
list.

The subscription runs from its January - 31 December each year and costs
$30.00.

BENEFITS

A paid subscription allows you to receive the list, and post requests and
information. I am sure you will agree $30.00 is far less expensive than a visit
from your neighbourhood IT consultant, and a lot less time consuming than a
trip to the Genius Bar.

PAYMENT

There is a grace period of two months for you to make you payment, but we do
have to ‘moderate' the list by the end of February. This means the wand is
waved and those who have not subscribed are deemed ‘moderated’ and unable to
post to the list.

You can pay by pay by electronic transfer or post a cheque.
ELECTRONIC TRANSFER:-

CHEQUE:-

Group” and post to:

WAMUG Treasurer
C/- PO Box 1204

REMITTANCE ADVICE

Please email a copy of the remittance advice to <members...@wamug.org.au> This
assists us in identifying and confirming your payment and helps speed up the
process. This can be very beneficial if you urgently need to post to the list.

THANK- YOU

A big thank-you to those wonderfully organised members who have already paid
their dues.

If you have any queries don’t hesitate to send an email to
<members...@wamug.org.au> and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Cheers to everyone and a little something found on the net to put a smile on
your face.

Tuesday's Meeting

2015-08-01 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello Fellow WAMUGgers,

The winter solstice has passed and we can now look forward to the balmier
nights and days of Spring. According to my iPhone weather app, Tuesday will be
partly cloudy with a maximum of 18 a mimimum,of 7. With no predicted rain,
hail or snow, hopefully you will be able to make it to our monthly meeting.

This month is ”PDF month” with our topics chosen ‘just because’. We will be
looking at Flip PDF - changing your PDF documents into stunning booklets. Could
be just the thing to save your child’s art work rather than cluttering up the
fridge. We will also examine PDF to Keynote for mac - if you want to have the
said art work as a keynote presentation to run in the background at their 21st
- and we will have quick look at using Preview to make memes.

There will be a few other tips tricks to be shown - some you may know some
hopefully new,

Looking forward to seeing as many as you as possible .

Membership Information

2015-03-06 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello WAMUGgers,

Last Thursday, 5th March little ticks were added or removed from little boxes
in the software that runs our mailing list. (Are some of you remembering the
Pete Seeger’s hit of the 60’s)

Most people who receive the list would be blissfully unaware that anything had
happened.

However, if you post to the list and receive an automated message something
like -Your mail … is being held until the list moderator can review it for
approval it usually means you are not a financial member.

Although financial membership runs for the calendar year from 1 January to 31
December we accept membership throughout the year. Information is available on
our website under the tab Join.

I am sure those of you who have paid their membership will agree that $30.00 is
very cheap for the advice and help that is given.

Again, thank you to all members who contribute to make this organisation a
success

Cheers,

Maureen

Committee News

2015-02-28 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello Wonderful WAMUGgers,

Please take the time to read this ‘bulletin.’ Below are three items of
importance that concern us all.

1 FINALISING MEMBERSHIP

Thank you to all the members who have paid their dues. Financial membership of
WAMUG allows members to post queries to the list and to receive advice and
information. Your $30 subscription runs for the calendar year from 1 January
to 31 December. We are now in the third month of this year and it is time to
review the membership list to ensure that paid-up members have the privileges
they are entitled to. If you have already paid your membership you have
nothing to worry about. Everything is 'hunky-dory.’

If you are reading this, or you know of somebody who wishes to avail themselves
of expert advice and list camaraderie, please ensure that the $30 membership is
finalised by Thursday, 5 March. Extra details are our website.

Again, thanks to all those who have already supported a wonderful organisation.

2 AGM

Many of you will be aware that over the last few years we have struggled to get
a quorum at out AGM. According to our constitution we require 20% of our
membership or 15 members ( whichever is less) to be present at the AGM if it is
to be viable. The actual AGM only takes about 10 minutes and includes a
summary from the committee, the election of office bearers and the Treasurer’s
report.

This year we are trying something new in the hope that it will allow more
members to attend. Our AGM will be held at the Dome Cafe, 897 Albany Highway
East Victoria Park at 12:30 PM on Sunday 8th March. After the AGM part, we
invite you will stay, order some lunch, chat socialise.

This is another chance to match faces to list names. Family members and
significant others are welcome to attend but only paid up members can vote at
the AGM.

So give yourself a break from the Sunday roast and come, socialise and vote.

In order to provide Dome with the number of attendees, please email me off list
if you intend to come and if appropriate how many will be accompanying you. It
would be appreciated if this information can be given by 6 PM on Thursday, 5
March.

3 COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP

A few weeks back we called for nominations for committee membership. Again, I
ask if any person would be willing to join the committee and assist in
furthering the aims of WAMUG. It would be great to have some ‘new blood.’

The current committee of Peter Hinchlife, Peter Botman, Peter Smith, Daniel
Kerr, Bernard Barnwell and yours truly, have all nominated for 2015. However,
another one or two members would help share the load and we would feel less
guilty when we have to miss meetings or need time off.

If you would like to give something back to WAMUG being on the committee could
be for you. it is not an onerous responsibility and as the old adage goes
“Many hands make light work.” If you have any queries about this feel free to
email me off list.

Once again, thank you for all your interest and support. WAMUG only exists
because you the members contribute and so willingly share your interests and
knowledge.
Hope to see many of you at the AGM.

Cheers everyone,

Committee Notice

2014-11-30 Thread Maureen Smith
Hellos Fellow Wamuggers,

Final Meeting

I was at the hairdressers the other day chatting away to the young lady doing
my hair the topic of Wikipedia came up. She casually mentioned “Of course you
can’t trust Wikipedia, anyone can change anything.”
It was at that point I started to tell her some of the facts behind Wikipedia,
having been privileged to hear a talk given by Gideon Digby earlier this year.

If you have any bias for or against, or just want to hear the behind the scenes
information on this cultural phenomena come to our meeting this Tuesday.

Not only will Gideon be talking about Wikipedia but will also talk about the
WIkimedia Foundation, the non-profit and charitable organisation that operates
many wikis. of which Wikipedia is just one.

So, set your recorders and/or computers to tape your favourite television
programmes, leave the washing up to someone else and head on down to the last
WAMUG meeting for this year. Details on our website.

End of Year Get Together

In the past, the WAMUG Committee has hosted a barbecue for members on a Sunday
in December. At our last meeting we decided NOT to host the event this year as
over the past few years the numbers have drastically declined, for a wide
variety of reasons.

If we have misjudged the situation, after all we are only human,(to date none
of us has been bitten by a genetically modified spider, or in fact any
genetically modified species) please email the list and if there is sufficient
demand we can organise something.

Cheers, everyone and I hope to see you at this Tuesday’s meeting

WAMUG 30th - Memories

2014-08-09 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello fellow WAMUGgers,

Earlier I posted some members ‘memories’ of their inception into, “the
never-ending battle for Truth Justice and the Apple way” (apologies to
Superman).

Ronni, a stalwart and life member of our organisation emailed me a copy of the
speech she gave when being awarded her Life Membership. In her speech she
explains how she came to join WAMUG and how strongly she believes in WAMUG’s
principles since joining and why she is so willing to give help. She has given
permission to post this speech to the list.

As we celebrate, this our 30th year, I find it inspiring that within our
organisation we have such a variety of members ranging from those with such
wealth of experience as Ronni, Peter H and Daniel, as well as members who have
just bought thier first Apple product and everyone in-between. I hope we
continue to support each other and encourage others into the fold.

Go WAMUG!!

Cheers,

Maureen

WAMUG ‘Honorary Life Membership' Award speech

I am honoured to receive this award.
It is unbelievable and something I will treasure forever.

I am humbled; as I am just one of a team of extremely talented people, who give
so much of their knowledge, their experience, their professional advice and
their time.

I am proud; to not only be a member, but to have provided assistance to other
members.

Back years ago, when I first started using a Mac computer. I experienced a
problem with an external burner I had purchased. It took me some time to get
enough courage to post a message asking for help.

A person responded to my 'plea for help' by typing the letters RTFM!
At that time I didn't know what RTFM meant.
I eventually corrected the fault myself and did find out what the letters RTFM
meant.
Consequently, I did not post a message asking for help again!

What I did do, was start researching everything I could find out about
Macintosh Computers and how they work. I purchased so many books, subscribed to
so many Mac magazines, downloaded so much information from the Internet.
I soaked up every bit of information I could.
I took my first Mac apart and put it back together again and was surprised it
still worked!

I've had good mentors along this journey of learning, who have taught me many
things.

Eventually my journey brought me to WAMUG!

I have strongly believed in WAMUG's principles and work since joining many
years ago. And I have tried to give help and encouragement to people wanting to
get the best possible results from their Apple Mac experience.

I don't expect accolades for helping people. Helping people gives me a good
feeling.
We all experience problems at some time and need help.
If we can help each other, that is what we do It's The Mac Way!

So In Conclusion: To be recognised in this way for my work is very gratifying.
It's a great feeling to be appreciated.
And I thank you for it.
Thank You!

WAMUG 30th - Memories

2014-07-24 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello fellow WAMUGgers,

As we are celebrating 30 years of WAMUG I though it might be interesting to
share what memories we have of all things Macintosh /Apple and beyond.

Earlier this month, Severin Crisp wrote to me of his experiences 40 + years
with computers and his association with Apple . It makes for a very interesting
read.
He has given permission to share it to the list.

I am sure others have had lengthy and/or interesting associations with Apple.
It would be great to hear your memories.

Cheers,

Maureen

Severin Crips’ Email

My introduction to computing was on a Bendix G15 at National Research Council
of Canada in Ottawa where I was a PostDoctoral fellow from 1960. It was a
single user machine on which you booked time and it had paper tape input and
typewriter output and had a regular maintenance outage for one hour every
morning! Shortly before we left Canada in 1964 (plus two sons who had
materialised in our time there) the division acquired a new machine, still
paper tape input but which ran Fortran, to which then I was introduced. Back
in Physics at UWA an IBM 1620 card machine had been acquired and was a huge
advance. Still single user for which you could book time but many jobs run by
the Computing Centre staff as batches. I remember almost wheelbarrow loads of
boxes of cards! Then a DEC10 time sharing machine appeared, a huge step
forward in speed and capability including direct talk to the computer from a
terminal! and the announcement that this would satisfy the University’s
computing needs for at least the next 5 years. In 6 months it was up to
saturation and the CDC Cyber machines, extensive mainframes with card readers,
magtape drives, line printers and the works all running principally batch
more or less took over. A later DEC machine ran as an adjunct, usable from
remote terminals around campus for direct input/output, a foreshadowing of
desktop machines.

The PCs started to appear, both IBM and others and Physics elected to go Mac, a
brilliant choice as far as I was concerned! Machines proliferated through
teaching and research, I had a DEC PDP-8(?) controlling my X-ray spectrometer
and collecting data and communication directly with a Mac in my office. For
home I bought one of the first 128K bundles, with a dot matrix printer and a
carrying case, around $2000 from memory. It was subsequently upgraded to a
MacPlus with a massive 4MB of memory and used as office computer in my wife’s
art gallery. On my desk at work I had stepped up to an SE 30, a real speed
machine, and progressed through a series of upgradings until my retirement in
mid 1964 at which time we moved to Albany and I purchased a PowerMac which
since then has progressed though a series of necessary(??!) indulgences to my
current 21.5inch iMac, which cost a similar amount to that first 128k Mac.

In my time at NRC in Ottawa and in Physics at UWA there was always expert
advice and comment for problems immediately to hand, usually from someone just
a door or two down the corridor or at the help desk in the Computing Centre, a
vital thing when unravelling Fortran puzzles! In Albany that was not similarly
available and at some stage I discovered WAMUG on who/which I have relied
heavily every since. So many times a seemingly hopeless impasse has been
resolved by an exert input, I know my experience mirrors that of many others.
Notably Ronni and Daniel have pointed me in the right direction many, many
times as have so many other members. Much information sits in the archives to
be unearthed; I admit to laziness and just reask the question. I cannot speak
too highly of the benefits I have had from my WAMUG membership, my $30 annual
fee is trivial for the return I get, not only from direct answers and speedy
resolution with no time wasted when problems arise, but from general learning
from seeing solutions emerge from other member’s dilemmas and generally about
things Mac.

My one regret is that I have never attended a WAMUG meeting nor have I met any
members (other than Neil Houghton who lives nearby) face to face; I am a true
member in absentia. Advancing years, which see us both in our 80s, make trips
to Perth rare and become a serious physical effort. Sadly I will not be able
to join with you all on August 10th for the celebration. The WAMUG committee,
who keep the show going the way itv does, deserve at least an Order of
MacStralia in the next honours awards, without them there would be nothing.

I will be there with you in spirit, “Floreat WAMUG!”.-- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List --

Committee Notice

2014-07-20 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello fellow WAMUGgers,

Here is this month’s update in most things WAMUG.

August Meeting

There will be a change of venue for our next meeting. This is because our
normal meeting venue will be unavailable during August. The meeting, on Tuesday
5 August, will be held at Collier Village, 11 Morrison Road Como. Closer to the
event, we will give more specific details on the location as the village is a
large complex.

At this meeting there will be a demonstration of the new LaCie Fuel Wireless
Drive.

This is a drive that allows you to
Expand your iPad capacity without cables
Share files with 5 devices at once
Play media on devices via mobile app
Stream to Apple TV and AirPlay devices
It is portable and very light which makes it a great asset for travellers. No
need to worry about running out of storage for those holiday snaps or how to
keep the ankle biters amused while you check on your WAMUG emails.

We will also be looking at an iPhone Bluetooth handset that allows you to talk
while checking your iPhone calendar, maps, etc, as well as ensuring your iPhone
does not get lost under the paperwork on your desk.

In the software department there will be a demonstration of SheepShaver. No,
this has nothing to do with shearing sheep! It is software designed to emulate
older Mac operating systems. So, if you have a program that you can no longer
use because of advances in Apple’s operating systems, this may be the answer

Finally we will be looking at how to make the best of your iBook app on your
iPhone or iPad.

WAMUG 30th Celebration.

If you are intending to come remember, confirmation and payment need to be made
by Wednesday August 6th. Payment can be made by electronic transfer, cheque or
you can pay when you attend August’s meeting.

Year.” (Yes it is a rather long title but is still shorter than “A time to
celebrate Apples 30th year with with a social function, a chance for members to
get together and put faces to those names and email addresses.”) The function
is not solely for WAMUG members but also their families and friends.

Date - Sunday 10th August.
Time - 12:00 for a 12:30 Lunch.
Where - Burswood Atrium

Further details will be sent out after the next committee meeting.

We realise ,whatever date we choose, some of you will be unable to come due to
other commitments. However, we would love to have as many as possible attend.
It is a good opportunity to meet and greet in 'real time' and extend our
friendship beyond the list.

Monthly Meeting

We held our second meeting at the The Professional Prowest Real Estate in High
Road, Willeton and things ran even smoother than the last time, with everyone
chipping in to set up pack up. We were all done and dusted by 9:30 and had
no long walk to our parked cars. The tea, coffee biscuits time and allowed
for lots of conversation and show tells as well as convivial chatter.

Peter Hinchliffe shared his expertise on the topics of “Using the Dock More
Effectively Tips Tricks When using Spotlight. He also gave an impromptu
summary of the WWD conference having watched it live the morning before. (And
people say only teenagers can do late nights!!!) Peter Botam took the time to
show us how you can use Preview to modify fill in those pesky Government
forms that frequently have glitches in them, and don’t allow you to save them,
and don’t have boxes big enough to fill in all the details , and leave
essential information out etc etc. I think you get my drift.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday July 1st. You will be informed as to what
will be included closer to the date.

So, in the words of a favourite grunter, Th-th-th-that's all folks!”

Cheers, everyone,

Maureen Smith

Committee News

2014-04-23 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello fellow WAMUGers

This email is to let you know of some things that were discussed at the recent
Committee meeting.

Change of Venue

Firstly, we have a change of meeting venue starting with our meeting on May 6.
For a few years now we have had the use of Future Sphere at Christ Church
Grammar School in Claremont. Although these facilities were state-of-the-art,
the location, school changes to the layout and function of the building plus
timing restrictions (we had to be out by 9 pm or alarms started ringing and
beefy security men would arrive at the door) contributed to a steady decline in
attendance. Consequently, the committee has been searching for for an
alternative meeting place that fulfils our requirements and whose cost won't
break the bank”. Perhaps in the the spirit of full disclosure ii should mention
at this point the there actually never were any beefy security guards, just
once the caretaker arrived when yours truly incorrectly set the security
code.!!!

We have been very fortunate in obtaining a large office space in High Road,
Willeton, thanks to the generosity of the Professional Prowest Real Estate.
This new venue is easier to get to, no parking hassles and there is no need for
us to have to vacate the premises by 9pm of an evening. This being the case we
have returned to a meeting start time of 7:30 pm, which should make it easier
for all of us to get home from work, have something to eat and then make the
meeting.

So we look forward to starting afresh with our meetings and hope to see a
number of you attending. Further details will be posted next week on our
website.

Survey Results

Secondly, and possibly the news you have been waiting for, we had a look at the
results of our recent survey. Thank you very much to the 62 members who
replied. Taking those few minutes to answer the questions has given the
Committee a broad overview of the location of our members.

Over 90% of those who replied lived within the metropolitan area, and for the
sake of this survey that included postcodes within 30 km of the Perth CBD.
These members were distributed fairly evenly north and south of the river.

The rest resided in the country with the majority in Western Australia, 1 in
New South Wales and 2 in Tasmania.

Celebrate Apple’s 50th year.

Finally, if you have not been aware 2014 marks Apple’s 50th year. We thought
we would like to celebrate this anniversary with a social function, a chance
for members to get together and put faces to those names and email addresses.
Although there is still more planning to be down we have tentatively decided to
have lunch at the Burswood on a weekend in August. More information will be
coming out after the next committee meeting, but for now keep it in the back of
your mind.

Many thanks for your support,

Committee Notice - Survey

Hello fellow WAMUGgers,

This is a big thank you to the 44 list members who have responded to the
survey sent out last Wednesday.

There is still a chance to complete WAMUG’s shortest survey and gain the
satisfaction that comes from crossing another task off your to do list.

Remember it is completely anonymous and comprises only 2 ‘answers’. Are you
financial member, and your postcode.

Please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8GCHLXZ and fill in your
answers.
The survey will stay open until the wee hours of Sunday morning and can be
taken by any list member, financial and non financial members.

Committee Notice

2014-03-19 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello fellow WAMUGgers,

Just two pieces of information for your perusal.

1. At the recent committee meeting it was decided to forgo our usual
monthly meeting for this coming April. We haven’t abandoned idea of the
meetings we just need a short breather. In May we will resume the monthly
meetings at a new location and time. More on that in the future.

2. In order to help us help you we would like to get a ‘feel’ of the
location of our members. We know, for instance, that there is a strong
contingent of members in the Albany region but we are not really aware of where
other members hail from. We may only have half a dozen metropolitan members and
the rest are in the country!! If we have most of our members living south of
the river then organising an event in Joondalup is not likely to be successful
!!

In order to find out this information would you please take a minuscule amount
of time to complete possibly the shortest survey ever. It is completely
anonymous and comprises only 2 ‘answers’. Are you financial member, and your
postcode.

Please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8GCHLXZ and fill in your
answers.

We will keep the survey open for 10 days

Many thanks,

Maureen Smith

AGM news

2014-03-14 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello fellow WAMUGgers,

Well we made it through our second attempt at the AGM and I sincerely thank
those members who battled parking and did some cross county walking in order to
attend. (Okay, so it was only across the oval but it was getting dark!!! ) The
committee members of 2013 were all willing to stand again and were re-elected.
Peter Hinchliffe, although remaining on the committee, has taken a well earned
rest as our President.

Peter has been President of WAMUG for as long as I have been a member (4 years)
and I am not sure for how many more years before that, and I understand, has
been a part of WAMUG since its inception. I would like to thank Peter, as I am
sure all of us would, for the work he has done as President and will continue
to do for WAMUG. As I said earlier, Peter will still be a member of the
committee and an active member of the List, which is really fabulous because as
the newly elected President I am going to be calling on his expertise from time
to time. [Didn’t notice that on my life plan.] 

Your 2014 Committee is (not in any particular order)

Maureen Smith
Peter Hinchliffe
Peter Botman
Peter Smith
Bernard Barnwell
Daniel Kerr

Once again, thank you to those who turned up at AGM / Take 1 AGM / Take 2 and
to those who turned up to both and thank you for your thoughts and suggestions
on improving WAMUG.

Cheers,

AGM - Round 2

2014-03-09 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello Wamuggers,

Just a reminder that our 2nd attempt for an AGM will take place this Tuesday.
This meeting will only comprise all the ‘official stuff’ so should be over in
less than an hour.

The meeting will be held at Christ Church Grammar School, Queenslea Drive
Claremont and starts at 7:00pm.

Location Map
If you log into ,http://www.ccgs.wa.edu.au/ccgs-world-page/campus-map you
will see a Google map of the location of Christ Church Grammar as well as a map
of the campus. (Click on both to enlarge)

Parking
Parking can sometimes be a bit of a problem if there is a function at the
College, so if there is no parking along Queenslea Drive use the College
parking closer to Stirling Highway.
Use this link to see what I mean.
http://www.wamug.org.au/wp-content/uploads/FutureSphere-Parking-01.tiff

Hopefully, we will see you there

Re: Henry V the AGM

2014-03-08 Thread Maureen Smith
Hi Michael,

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my impassioned??? speech.

The committee realises that no matter what night is chosen for a meeting some
people who want to attend just cannot because of prior commitments like yours.
Certainly 21st century life is full of a myriad of choices that the Englishmen
at the Battle of Agincourt did not have and I for one am very happy to be
living now with its complications rather than in 1415.

Once again, thank you for your response.

Re: Henry V the AGM

2014-03-08 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello Nathalie,

Thanks for your thoughts and the time taken to respond. As a committee we have
been acutely aware of the difficulties associated with synchronous meetings and
what you have said would certainly ring true for some of our members. We
definitely have a strong online arm of WAMUG ,i.e. the List, and I know that
committee has discussed, on a number of occasions, ways of expanding and
improving our online services.

Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how indiviuals see it, since WAMUG
is an incorporated organisation we are subject to certain legalities, rules and
regulations. Among them, is the requirement to have office bearers, a committee
and an AGM regardless of whether we have physical meetings, chatrooms, Skype
each other, or just use the List. That was the reason for e-mail to the List
and the plea for more committee members.

Once again, thank you for your comments, your interest and your support. It is
appreciated.

Cheers,

Maureen Smith

 Hi All:

I love Shakespeare, so this post really engaged me. I attended one of last
year’s meetings and made an effort to go to show my appreciation for the work
the committee does in maintaining the list.

I commented the following to the in-person group then, but would like to
present my POV to the wider group on this subject.

Synchronous meet-ups are problematic, and getting to be more so when so much
value can be delivered in an asynchronous way. On one hand it is about other
commitments; on the other it is about giving people a reason to meet up in
person by delivering something they want but cannot get on the list. I asked
the group to articulate what they thought the value of the meet-ups would be,
and they said things like comaraderie, learning, support and so on.

I went home and thought about it, and realised I get all of those things from
the list itself. People on this list have supported me in times of dire need
(Hello Ronni!) without us being in the same country, much less in the same
 town or space.

I am guessing that for some of us meeting in person is something we do when
there is a compelling reason to. Although some of the items on the meeting
list will be very important to some people, none resonate with what I happen
to be doing on my Mac.

However, if there were specific jobs that people in the WAMUG community can
take on in an synchronous way to make the list and online community better, I
believe that there would be support from all the locations that people hail
from on this list. The appeal of a more traditional support structure (office
bearers, in person meet ups) is something that doesn’t have as much value to
me in terms of time spent as much as being able to toil away in the wee hours
of the morning (or night) knowing that my efforts are supporting the group,
and the people who do want to meet up, as a whole.

 Nathalie

Re: IMPORTANT!! WAMUG Annual General Meeting

2014-03-02 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello Fellow WAMUGgers,

In response to Peter Hinchcliffe’s AGM notice I too urge all members that are
in Perth to consider attending the AGM. Not that I have anything against our
country members but I do realise the journey might be a bit long.  It is
during this AGM that the Report of the Committee and the Financial Statements
is given and, most importantly, the election of the Officers and the Committee.
A committee needless to say, is vital to the future of WAMUG.

I have been a member of WAMUG since 2010 when I made the transition from
Windows to Macs. I have attended virtually all the meetings since then and
have always come away with some information, an answer to a question or a
product which I have later included in my personal arsenal of software.

About two years ago I tentatively put up my hand to be a member of the
Committee because I valued the meetings and wanted them to continue. I say
tentatively, because compared to the knowledge of Peter H, Ronnie, Daniel and
others, I am a mere private in the “WAMUG army”. However, it is a decision I do
not regret.

Although I may lack huge expertise in all things Apple - actually extend that
to all things ‘computerish’ - I found out I did have things to offer, just as
we all have. Being a teacher-librarian I have no problem in presenting to a
group so I have on occasion given demonstrations at the meetings. Your
expertise might be in organisation, or a particular software package. Maybe you
are great at secretarial stuff and would be happy to take minutes at a meeting,
or you have a video and would be willing to video edit a meeting. Whatever
your gifts consider becoming committee member.

The more committee members we have the more support we can give to you, our
members and to ourselves. Perhaps consider joining for just this year.
Certainly no one is expecting a lifetime commitment but as the proverb states
“Many hands make light work.”

Cheers to everyone,

Maureen Smith

Re: IMPORTANT!! WAMUG Annual General Meeting

2014-02-27 Thread Maureen Smith
Hello Joy,

The next meeting will be held at Christ Church Grammar School, Queenslea Drive
Claremont. The meeting starts at 7:00pm and we are all done dusted by 9:00pm,
and that includes a break for coffee/tea.

We charge $5.00 per person per meeting to help offset the cost of public
liability insurance - a mandatory retirement - and room hire etc.

Location Map
If you log into ,http://www.ccgs.wa.edu.au/ccgs-world-page/campus-map you
will see a Google map of the location of Christ Church Grammar as well as a map
of the campus. (Click on both to enlarge)

On the campus map, The FutureSphere is building L in the middle along Queenslea
Drive [Grid ref: G9]. It is upstairs.

Parking
Parking can sometimes be a bit of a problem if there is a function at the
College, so if there is no parking along Queenslea Drive use the College
parking closer to Stirling Highway.
Use this link to see what I mean.

Hopefully, we will see you there.

Cheers,

Maureen Smith

This is a reminder to everyone that the meeting of Tuesday 4th March is the
WAMUG Annual General Meeting. It is very important that we have at least 15
people attend this meeting, in order to prevent the situation which arose
last year when we failed to get a quorum.

To this end, we will be offering a range of door prizes to those who attend,
and these items will have serious value. Further information will be release
in the next couple of days. We are seeking several more committee members to
add to our small group, most of whom are overworked and over-committed in
other areas to do full justice to the job.

If you are keen to see WAMUG continue, as are all the members of the
committee, please consider nominating for a place with us. Our meetings are
casual (a little too much at times!) but every one on the committee is
committed to to the continuation of WAMUG and the concept of the monthly
meeting. If all we hear is be be believed, 2014 is going to an exciting year
for Apple, and it's great to be able to help bring some of that excitement
 to WAMUG members.

2011-01-01 Thread Maureen Smith
To all Wamuggers,

I am what some would term a list lurker. (Sounds somewhat malevolent doesn't
it?)

I just wanted to 'break cover' and thank all the wonderful people who
contribute to the WAMUG list, especially Ronnie, Daniel Kerr and Peter
Hinchcliffe. Your information and suggestions are so valuable.

Thank you to everyone who participates and I hope you all have a wonderful 2011.

Cheers,

Maureen Smith

Re: WAMUG Annual General Meeting

Can you tell me where the meeting will be held? Thanks

Tomorrow night (3 March) is WAMUG's Annual General Meeting.
Accordingly, we are looking for new Committee members and Office
Bearers. If you make to no other WAMUG meeting this year, please try
to come along tomorrow night. We urgently need your input and
support, and the Committee needs fresh blood!

If you are in any way entrepreneurial, feel that the WAMUG meetings
(and WAMUG itself for that matter) are dull, colourless and boring
and need something added, feel that you can spare an hour so every
month and are keen to see WAMUG continue in its present form, or
even in a different form, or have any opinion at all. please
consider nominating for a position on the committee. WAMUG Needs You!

Please not also that in order to vote you must be a financial
member. You can make the payment of $30 in several ways:

1. By Cheque (made out to Western Australian Macintosh Users Group)

2. By paying Real Money

3. Online by visiting http://www.wamug.org.au/join/ and clicking
on the red Paymate link on the right of the page

4. By direct Electronic Transfer, the details of which are:
Bank: Bankwest
Account Name: Western Australian Macintosh Users Group
BSB: 306075
Account Number: 4197787

Once the official part of the evening is dispensed with, we will
have a look at the new features of iLife 09. This will probably take
up the great of the evening, because there is a great deal to show.
iLife is a major upgrade to Apple's perennial showpiece software
suite, and while we will be able to cover most of the new additions
and changes, there will be much we won't get to cover. For me, the
changes in iPhoto alone are worth the price of admission.

Hope to see you there!
