Re: Mail problem
Many thanks Susan, David and Ronni for your suggestions. It is definitely not an iiNet problem. Nor does it concern settings which have been checked, double-checked and re-checked. I did indeed try removing the account and adding it again as a new account. Not only did this not work but I was then faced with the interesting learning curve of converting .emix files and resetting all the massages up to September 18. I remain mightily puzzled. I could find no reason for this, and suspected a bug in iinet's software. Not feeling strong enough to debug a possible bug at iinet, I re-arranged my message protocols to get round the problem. Hi Michael, Only this one account is not receiving mail, from the same ISP as others that are working perfectly on the G5? You can send ok from this account? The settings for this account are exactly the same as the other accounts? You have checked the correct Port SSL is selected? When you click on Get Mail for this account, what happens ... do you receive a message? To see what is happening when you click Get Mail choose Window Activity Viewer (Command-0 [zero]) If you are completely sure every setting in the 'bad' account is the same as the other 'good' accounts with the same ISP, the only thing I can think 'might' be happening, only I cannot see it happening to the same account each time :-( I take it the account is a POP account. Mail may be exceeding a limit on the number of simultaneous connections set by your mail server. This occurs most often when you check your email using more than one client, or on more than one machine at a time—though under some circumstances, Mail may attempt to open a second connection to a mail server before closing an earlier one. IMAP supports multiple simultaneous connections, whereas POP does not. Sorry I can't come up with any other suggestion at the moment. Failing that, it will default to the 3G network. If that's turned off, it will just use GPRS. One thing to remember is that when you have your iPhone in sleep mode, it will turn the wifi radio off to preserve battery life, so if you have anything set to connect to the net automatically, such as mail set to push or fetch, it will do so using cellular data even with wifi turned on. If you don't want this to happen, just remember to set mail to manual, push notifications off, etc. Basically, anything that would connect automatically. The only thing they might have escaped with, in boxes and suit cases, are the family photos and a few mementos. Or perhaps they have salvaged on or two items from the ashes or the floods. These objects have now become more precious than the cars, furnishings or even the buildings that were lost. Perhaps they are now the only record of their lost relatives and friends. If you aren't using (or considering) Naked DSL and iiNet, you might want to ignore this altogether. I recently asked to switch from my ADLS2+ account to Naked DSL, so I could keep my existing phone line and still use VOIP via iiNet. Just in case you want to do this as well, be aware that your broadband could be off for up to 15 days (ours was out for 8) and your phone line will be down for a few days as well. I made the mistake of relying on talking to iiNet people and not doing additional research as well. The sales person made no mention of this gap in service, but if you know what to look for it is in the FAQs on the iiNet website. Anyway, after the Naked DSL was connected, it was up for a day or two and then disconnected. A Telstra tech checked the line at our house and at the exchange, and told me (he called my mobile) that my line had been disconnected at the exchange, that he had reconnected and it would now work. So after another 2 days of no broadband (or phone), it worked again. iiNet thinks that lines get 'accidentally knocked out all the time' (yes, that is what iiNet support say), but after doing some research I found this thread: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm\?t=1129224 From this thread ... I had a tech at my house yesterday that told me an interesting story about one of the most common faults he sees with iiNet Naked lines. When Telstra techs are connecting a new line (for anyone), they are supposed to call up the Cable Assigner to find out which piece of copper cabling to use. Some of the laziest techs will then go searching for their own free piece of cable that is easier to set up (closer to the house or whatever), by checking lines for a dial tone. Since the Naked lines do not have dial tone, the tech will then take that line and use it for someone else's house! So he reckons a big part of his job is going into a house, attaching a cable break finder to the line. If it says 50m or 200m or something like that, then its usually that a Telstra tech has used the exchange line for someone else's house, and your bit of wire has been disconnected. He told me a specific story of a student who had this happen to him three times in the space of a month. = Hmm, this suggests my Naked DSL line might be disconnected at the exchange because it doesn't return a dial tone .. and it sounds like the cause of my problem. The tech at the exchange said it had been disconnected, not 'knocked out'. Has anyone else experienced this or something similar? iiNet support assume the cause is accidental, and are not interested in exploring other potential causes. On a separate note, now the physical line is up the Naked DSL service is getting regular drop outs. That is, it will work fine, then stop, and the modem reports the physical line is up but there is no ISP connection. Then after a while the line does connect again (by itself). I had forgotten to remove my ADSL filter - it still worked but the line was noisy. When I figured out it shouldn't be there and took it out, the line quality seemed to improve. However the dropouts have not stopped. Any suggestions on ways to resolve the dropouts would be appreciated. I'm using a Belkin VOIP 4 port wireless modem (F1P1241EGau). iiNet advise this modem is compatible with Naked DSL, and the software (Runtime Code Version: 0.27 (Sep 29 2005 18:19:14) is also compatible. iiNet are convinced it is a line issue and won't look at other options, however I'm hoping someone else in WAMUG has experienced (and solved) this dropout problem. The way I see it, even if I can stop the dropouts, possibly I am going to get the 'accidentally knocked out' line problem occurring whenever a Telstra tech is looking for an available line at the exchange and finds my line without a dial tone. This makes me think Naked DSL is going to be a constant drama. Does this sound familiar to any other Naked DSL users? Michael On 01/12/2008, at 8:14 AM, Neil Houghton wrote: Hi Stuart, If you are just inputting text on top of the pdf, I use Formulate Pro http://code.google.com/p/formulatepro/ they say it is Beta but I have found it works fine for me - and it's free!! (They also say you can add graphics but I haven't tried that myself). If you are actually wanting to add new content in front of the existing pdf (as opposed to writing over the existing pdf) have you thought of using the inbuilt features of preview which lets you add pdf pages so, for example, you could have a text document for your new content (eg a Word or Pages document) save it as a pdf (from the print menu) then add that pdf to the front of your questionnaire pdf to combine the two. Preview also lets you add annotations to pdfs. Probably best to have a play with the different options to see what works best/easiest for you. Hope that helps. Cheers Neil -- Neil R. Hello Michael, From http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20080929133440824 Some users have reported an issue wherein, after applying Security Update 2008-006 for Mac OS X 10.4.11, their systems repeatedly display the message Your network settings have been changed by another application. This message is sometimes accompanied by dropous in wireless connectivity. The potential fix is as follows: Delete the following files from Library/Preferences/ SystemConfiguration • com.apple.airport.preferences.plist • NetworkInterfaces.plist • preferences.plist • com.apple.nat.plist then restart. NB. I would suggest if you have many settings in your Network location you should copy all of that information somewhere and then move, instead of delete, the above files to your desktop until you know the problem is fixed before you trash them so you can retrieve this information later if needed. iTunes Authorisation
I have just restored (with Super Duper) to a new machine and am encountering problems in iTunes authorisation. Many of my playlists will function normally but for all iTunes purchased music I get the message This computer is not authorised to play. (title of tune). To play this song you must authorise this computer to play songs using the account [EMAIL PROTECTED]. This is not my account name. When I correct it to my actual account ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) I get the message that the machine is already authorised and upon attempting to play the tune I once more get the initial message asking me to authorise in the name of an account that does not exist. And so on... I know this sound a bit confusing but nowhere near as confused as I am becoming. Any suggestions? G5 Problem
My dual 2 GHz G5 has developed problems and is currently hors de combat. A problem which started about a week ago and was, at that time, intermittent, has now become constant. The machine starts normally and will function for a brief period of time before freezing, at which time the drive is screaming and the machine displays a greyed-out exhortation to re-start. Etc. Before the problem became acute I was able to run TechTool Pro, Disk Warrior and Disk Utility. No drive problems were noted and a few files were repaired. I also replaced the directory. As I am more than stuffed without CS3 or a machine that will drive a 30 monitor I would welcome any suggestions. Both drives are backed up and the main drive is cloned with SuperDuper so I would lose only some recent installations if a new drive is indicated. I can't keep the machine running long enough to see if a reinstall from SuperDuper would be of any help. I would welcome suggestions or observations regarding probable/ possible cause of the malfunction. It would need the same flavour of OSX ... ie to say Leopard or Tiger , that you are running on the G5 , and the version on the external drive should NOT be later than what you are using . IF you can start up and run OK from that external drive ( Firewire or eSata ) action a combo update to the OSX you have on your G5 . Assuming that clears the problem , follow it with Permissions repair . I had a great day today using that technique clearing theBLUE Startup SCREEN that hit me this morning at start up . Re: Cyrillic Oddities
It seems likely that my address has been harvested. Quote from wikipedia: Another common method is the use of special software known as harvesting bots or harvesters, which spider Web pages, postings on Usenet, mailing list archives, and other online sources to obtain e-mail addresses from public data. Spammers may also use a form of dictionary attack in order to harvest e-mail addresses, known as a directory harvest attack, where valid e-mail addresses at a specific domain are found by brute force guessing e-mail address using common usernames in email addresses at that domain. For example, trying [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], etc and any that are accepted for delivery by the recipient email server, instead of rejected, are added to the list of theoretically valid e-mail addresses for that domain. The best remedy that I have so far received is to change my email address. Any less draconian suggestions? Or will it just go away :-) Michael On 27/05/2008, at 4:26 PM, Stephen Atherton wrote: HI, This is Russian spam. Whoops! RED FACE! (and definitely OT!) Don't know how on earth this happened, Please disregard unless overcome by prurient curiosity! Michael On 04/04/2008, at 5:56 PM, Michael Kane Taylor wrote: Hi all, just a quick notification of a mixed show at Rainier which is quite good fun. Worth a visit if you have time. Good coffee too!. Michael Greetings What can be classified as a piece of art? As John Berger denotes ‘the relationship between what we know and what we see is never settled’ (John Berger, Ways of Seeing, p.7), so then are the parameters of art ever-changing? These are questions that have been central in regard to established art institutions and avant garde art movements since the early 20th Century. The French artist Marcel Duchamp shocked the art world in 1916 with his piece Fountain, a urinal transplanted from its usual private setting and placed in a public art space. This work, which came to be the signature piece of the nihilist Dada art movement, challenged preconceived notions of what can be defined as art and mocked the high-brow bourgeoisie expectations of displayable art. In a recent art survey Duchamp’s Fountain surprisingly came top of a poll of 500 art experts’ opinion of the most influential modern art work of all time. Whist critics commented that the choice of Fountain ahead of works including Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) came as a shock, they concluded that it “reflects the dynamic nature of art today and the idea that the creative process that goes into a work of art is the most important thing - the work itself can be made of anything and can take any form. The choice of Duchamp’s ‘Ready-made’ Fountain indicates that what constitutes a work of art has now been seen as a defining point in the history of modernism. Dadaism has been revived in Rainier Gallery’s exhibition ‘Everyday Art’, where a host of primarily local artists, among them Janette Dyson, Kate Petty and Julie Ferns- Phesant, have brought vitality to the mundane and the everyday. Like Duchamp, the works in ‘Everyday Art’ function to give new meanings to seemingly dead, disregarded and decaying found artefacts and humdrum activities in order to broaden our perspectives of what art can be. The exhibition questions whether our understandings of art has progressed since the early 20th Century coming to acknowledge concept and process to be the essence of art works or whether we are still confined by the narrow frameworks of art as making “pretty pictures”. Hi all, I find that a 30 inch Apple monitor with Etye TV digital tuner is pretty good! HD TV is mind-boggling, and still cheaper than a comparative HD TV. I can't say I've seen an LCD/plasma which can compare to the trueness of a CRT. Find a nice widescreen CRT and add a set-top box and you'll get a cleaner image, nicer blacks, no motion lag AND it'll be a lot cheaper, because the technology is (said to be) End Of Line. I've even gone so far as looking at the $20,000 Bang and Olufsun (or maybe it was $40,000) and it's really not as good as a really good CRT. The only 'good' LCD I have heard about is the $60,000 professional broadcast colour correction monitors, and these don't usually come with speakers or a TV tuner. Re: Apples to Apples
Picking up on Hans' last paragraph and totally off topic but fun, so apologies in advance. The (dual processor) Amiga was arguably ahead of Apple in the mid-80s. Michael The Amiga computer was a machine ahead of its time. When it was released in 1985, its color screen (4096 colors in HAM mode!), four- channel sampled stereo sound, preemptive multitasking GUI, and custom chips to accelerate both sound and graphics made the year-old Macintosh seem antiquated and the PC positively Paleolithic. Re: Skype - how do I switch from speakers to handset automatically?
Glenn, My Keyspan seems to do it automatically without intervention on my part. After reading your posting I tried playing iTunes through the speakers and then dialed out. iTunes faded out and the sound switched to the handset. I had not tried this before but had manually switched from Line Out to Headset prior to dialing out. Seemingly this is not necessary. Maybe the difference is that I am not using the internal speakers? re.Skype phone
I am a confirmed Skype user , and for good reason. In answer to Denise’s query, Skype is a free download. If you have a built-in speaker and microphone on your computer you are ready to use Skype. If you have neither of the above, you will have to buy a USB headset or USB phone. Calls to other Skype users, wherever they may be, are free, The sound quality is usually excellent. Skype communicates with all platforms. I have just noticed that, as I write, there are over 6,500,000 Skype users on line. To call other landline or mobile users you will need to deposit ‘Skype-out' credit in units of 10 or 20 euros. Most landline calls (inc. the USA) cost 0.017 eurocents a minute, That is less than 3 cents Australian. Calls to mobiles vary, but mobile calls to the UK cost about 20 cents per minute. The recent addition of video for computer-to-computer calls and SMS for landline is good. Though the quality of iChat video is better. There are a variety of phones and headsets available. I use the Keyspan cordless USB phone. It is designed to integrate with Skype but will work equally well with iChat or any other audio coms application. In general, for calls to landline phones, I use Skype for overseas calls and iiNet VOIP for all local and national calls. I only use my regular number to receive calls. I use an iiNet VOIP/Landline/ADSL2+ package. This service is cheaper than Skype for national calls. It is also free between iiNet users. I have not had a Telstra bill in six months. Re: Skype phone
Hi Laura, I have been, for some time now, using the Keyspan cordless Skype phone. I have nothing but praise for this little phone. I was previously using a headset, which was excellent, and if I were, for some reason, to need hands-free, would use it again. However, the real advantage of the Keyspan is that it may be used at up to 100 metres from the computer. The phone is fully integrated with Skype in that contacts etc may be seen on the Keyspan display and call may be made directly from the phone. It will also open and close Skype. It also looks less conspiratorial if one is using the video option on Skype! The headset is quite confronting on video. Greatly recommended. Re: Skype phone
A quick follow-up to my letter and that of Nathalie. The AAA batteries on the Skype phone are re-chargeable through via USB connection. The charge lasts for ages and batteries re-charge very quickly. Incidentally, if 'phoning friends and family the video option is great. Also, the 2.5 Beta version is out with more features. Including SMS. Best, Michael On 24/01/2007, at 5:19 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi All: I can vouch for Keyspan as well--although one issue I have noticed is that it takes AAA batteries. If you are OK with using the batteries to make calls then that is great; but factor the cost of the batteries into the overall cost of Skype. I call the USA for hours every week and I find that i can have a cap on my phone calls on a regular phone of $60 per month. This makes my regular phone cheaper than Skype! And when people from the USA call me, Skype charges for Australia are either the same as or worse than some of the good deals on telcos there. So don't assume you are getting a great deal because you are using VOIP. Ms Works
I have encountered a seemingly insoluble problem. I started keeping records on the Ms Works database in the dim mists of the eighties. Since then they have been loaded into a succession of machines, culminating in my present G5 dual core. All was fine in Classic until I had to bite the bullet and do a clean install due to the effects of too much inherited gunk clogging the arteries. The machine now flies but I am unable to re-install MsWorks. I have an external disk drive which should do it but the dialogue simply says 'install unsuccessful' or some such snide comment. The records are extensive and I have been unable, over the years, to port them into any other programme. As my accountant wants some info' there is an element of urgency. Headset Problems
I am experiencing an irritating problem with my Logitech headset. I am using a G4 Mirrored door 1.42 desktop machine using 10.3.5. When the headset is plugged in, 90% of the time it immediately (or shortly thereafter) provokes an invitation to restart my machine. On the other 10% it performs admirably. Which is in itself a puzzle. Thinking that this erratic behaviour indicated a problem with the headset itself I borrowed another Logitech headset, only to find the same problem. The only point made in the accompanying literature from Logitech is that the USB keyboard must be plugged into USB port One for effective performance. I am not sure which one this is but assume that it must be one or the other of the monitor USB ports. Juggling around between ports seems however, to make no difference. I am now assuming that I have a problem with a corrupted system file. Before I go through the tedious business of an archived clean install and the subsequent Software Update downloads, does anyone have any suggestions? I should mention that the iSight microphone and my older USB MacAlly mic work well. Michael -- Michael Kane Taylor Ph: 61 (0)8 9498 0952 Skype: Mikanta

Re: Skype
You are right Ronda, in stating that free calls are available only to people with Skype installed. However, the programme is free and is 'cross-platform' for Windows XP, Linux, Pocket PC and Mac OS.10.3. Try that with iChat! Incidentally calls to phones, worldwide, cost 0.017 Euros ( 2.9 cents Au) per minute. Try that with Telstra.! I have had Skype for some weeks now and find it to be excellent. I experienced initial problems with a faulty headset and, subsequently, an indifferent microphone , but that was entirely to do with my own set-up. This has now been addressed and the sound quality is quite exceptional. Michael -- Michael Kane Taylor Ph: 61 (0)8 9498 0952 Skype: Mikanta
SkypeHype
The article that you refer to Graham is pretty factual and low on the hype. I have found the programme to be a bit quirky but it has already been updated in the three days since its release and no doubt that process will continue in the light of user feed-back. So far, I have found the audio quality to be astoundingly good. Also, there is absolutely no time lag or pause between responses. Quite apart from the outstanding (and free) computer-to-computer calls and the super-cheap overseas calls it is a cheaper way of making STD and Mobile calls within Australia. Not everyone has had the fairly trouble-free introduction that I have experienced, as evidenced by feedback on the Skype site, but it is certainly a step forward in telephony. Re: Skype for Mac
Steven, Skype works fine with my ancient Macally USB microphone and the external speakers but the headset (Logitech) is a total disaster. It causes crashes every time I attempt to use it. Actually I suspect that the headset itself might be faulty as the computer crashes if I boot up with the headset connected. When it did work it was excellent and recipients reported excellent audio quality, but it inevitably caused problems leading to voluntary, or involuntary, disconnection. The Macally works OK but I am told by recipients that the quality is not very good. I was wondering if the microphone on iSight would be better. Michael, I have Skype installed and it seems to work okay. I haven't yet tried it with iSight, but can do if you like. My Skype Name is slugdog. My main problem is not being able to get the headset microphone to work - don't know if it's the headset, or something to do with the line-in port on the Mac?? Maybe they're not compatible? It's an el cheapo headset from Dick Smith's or somewhere - Verbatim. Happy to hear from anyone regarding tips as to why this might not be working. I've been to Sound panel and changed device from Internal Microphone to Line In, but still doesn't seem to have made a difference. (Using a 17 1.5Gz PowerBook running 10.3.5). Steven Has anyone used the new Skype Beta for Mac? I downloaded it the other day and it is fantastic. Both computer-to-computer and computer-to-phone are excellent and the sound quality is amazing. Spent a happy few hours contacting all the overseas friends that I had been to mean too contact on steam-phone. I had a few hiccups when my Logitech headset repeatedly crashed a hitherto un-crashed Dual 1.42 G4 but it worked fine with my USB mic. I would be interested in learning if anyone has experience of using Skype with iSight.
