Re: Movies on the iPad 3
Hi Adrian Awhile back my young fella grabbed a copy of VLC from the app store and uses that to transfer TV shows and movies to his iPad 1. Unfortunately it is no longer available. I am currently trying out Movie Player (from the app store) which allows you to transfer movies using iTunes, dropbox, wifi or direct download from the web. It costs less than a cup of coffee and the best thing is it lets you play those sometimes annoying attachments your friends send to you in an email from the dark side So far it is working fine cheers Pedro On 29/03/2012, at 5:55 PM, cm wrote: Hi Adrian, Importing into iTunes is the standard way to get movies onto your iPad or Apple TV. Some ripping software will put them into iTunes for you directly. Others WAMUGites will know better than me about the options out there. For viewing on your iPad, if you are at home rather than travelling, you can stream the movies directly from your Mac. The streaming software will convert on the fly from many formats (WMA, flash, etc.) to iPad suitable .m4v / .mp4. I use Air Video for this. Hi Daniel While we are on the subject, I need another Hard drive to supplement the one Ali is using for her time machine backup . They might be slightly dearer than some of the other Brands but the FireWire 800 I've always found to be a lot faster then USB2. Some of the larger chain outlets would probably not carry as much FireWire gear and it's not in the interest. They would stick more to the USB items as they can sell it to both Windows and Mac people. Whereas your Mac outlets or specialists would tend to carry or order in FireWire items. That's what I tend to do as I find FireWire more reliable and faster. From a price point of view then USB can be cheaper yes. In answer to your USB3 question Peter, USB3 isn't available on any Mac's. Apple have gone with the new technology, thunderbolt, so its unsure if we'll see USB3. It was my Birthday; and I had returned home from Hospital after another operation for my battle with cancer, which had recurred after years of remission, and losing my husband to cancer in 2003. My prognosis was not the best and I was trying to come to terms with it, and learn how to deal with it and move forward; this time without the support of my darling husband. I can not remember how I came across the Video Speech, but to this day I remember Steve Jobs words; “Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith… You’ve got to find what you love.” All of Steve’s speech was inspirational, but these particular words motivated me beyond belief. I decided to change my life ... 'take on' Cancer again and beat it, and since I had lost one love, find what I love doing and learn to do it to the best of my ability. I knew I loved Macs and everything to do with Apple, but I had never had the time to really pursue this passion. Well, the rest is history, I threw my energies into ‘living with cancer' and doing something I really love … working with Macs and anything Apple. Install on all macs like all Mac app store apps. 10:37 am 4Gb 10:37 am Lion available only on Mac App Store One thing that annoys me with this,...and this is just my personal opinion,...but for people that are on small downloads are being penalised. I know some clients that have 2GB limits. How are they to get a 4GB download?? And sometimes with it charged at excess rates of 15c/MB that makes the remainder 2GB of the download costing them about $300 if they don't realise. As it's purchased through the Mac App Store, then it's not like you burn it DVD for them or something. Maybe I'm missing something here, and more info will become available later. Sure, maybe for the US where download limits are large and internet is cheap. But unfortunately we still have some low limits here in Australia. Again, maybe I'm missing something, or I'm not keeping up with the times but I just think there should be a couple of options. For those that don't realise or unsure about it, doesn't it leave them out of the loop for Lion? I suppose the other problem I see with this, is if you have to download it is that some clients don't want to do that. They feel more comfortable with hiring someone to come out and do it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to sound like I'm complaining about a loss of income or anything. I just know that for some, they may not feel comfortable in downloading and installing. They prefer to call me out to do it. I can't now go out and say,..oh, well I have to sit here for a couple of hours while this downloads. Sure I could say,..well start it downloading and call me when it's finished if you have any problems. I'm guessing that once it's downloaded you can burn the dmg file to install it, but then you wouldn't be able to do that as a) it wouldn't have been paid for, for another client and b) wont' give correct download figures to Apple. Maybe there will be a pay but don't download option. I guess time will tell. Just a couple of things that sprung to mind when I saw it. I mentioned it to another friend of mine who was online at the time and they said, oh, guess I'll have to watch my downloads for that month as I won't have much of my allowance. So really, they are sort of being penalised in a way. But, as mentioned, if it can be paid for and not downloaded, that may be a work around. :o) Oh well,...Im' sure as more info comes out we'll know. :o) On that note,..time for some sleep I think,..the iCloud info is still scrolling through MacRumors,...but I'll read the rest in the morning. Apparently Apple altered the SATA power connector in such a way that removing the hard drive from the system -- or even the bay it resides -- will cause the hard drive fan to spin at maximum speed. Even further, placing any third party drive in the machine results in the iMac failing the Apple Hardware Test, even if that drive was replaced with the same model that the iMac is shipped with. Apple seems to be specifically disallowing hard drives they don't approve of, locking new iMac owners into AppleCare in case something happens to the hard drive within the first three years or using an Apple-authorized repair center. We've touted the virtues of AppleCare many times. However, a good many tend keep their iMacs much longer than three years, and a hard drive is guaranteed to eventually fail. But since upgrading the current iMacs involve removing the screen, even thoughiFixIt says it is fairly easy to access the internal drive, I wouldn't want to go near that anyhow, and neither would your average custom Rod Blitvich - Amy Sam¹s Dad Yes, been following that once since saw it the other day. I'm not sure why they would do that. It does really close it off from other brands and options. Not necessarily at the time of purchase (though some are saying that's true too as Apple don't do options for larger SSD drives eg 480GB, 512GB SSD), but also later down the track. What if you buy a 1TB drive then a year down the track the drive dies (or you want to upgrade) for a larger drive. You're then stuck with buying what Apple offer you (Which sometimes is dearer then other brands or places). eg, even at the moment Apple don't offer a 3TB drive, yet you can buy this as Western Digital (and others make them). This has certainly gained a lot of momentum on some of the forums I've been reading. With lots of people hoping someone will bring out a hack or something for it. I just don't quite follow the reasoning for it. You've previously been able to change or upgrade the Hard Drive in iMac's with whatever drive you wanted, it didn't have to come from Apple. So why change it now. This seems to be happening more and more of late with certain things that Apple are doing. Look at iPad 2's for example. Why do the Apple Stores get a lot of iPad's (eg Apple Perth in Hay Street) yet the Apple resellers get minimum (or no) stock. (I was going to go on a bit more detail,..but think I'll just leave it at that without starting a flame war,...getting into trouble,..or,..well whatever may start from it,...lol). I just don't get it. Maybe I'm missing something, or not seeing some big picture or live in my own little world too much,..lol. Just my 2cents worth. If you need to create media rich content it is not the tool for that. And let’s consider secondary education. I think a Laptop is right for years 7-10. Unless you’re doing graphic design or other unit reliant on content creation (and even then it might happen in a lab), the iPad lends itself to Year 11-12. You can see the days of bulky school bags disappearing and all your textbooks being on an e-reader (iPad with ePub format even better). Jeff Strauss has good points but they aren’t really all relevant to education. He is a techie with 5 years in education and I beg to differ that what he says is relevant for any student. He uses arguments regarding power users and graphics designers that are irrelevant to many students. Might be relevant to some professionals but not students. Most people outside education (and sometimes inside) get caught up in the technology and seem to think we’re training the students to become top notch programmers, designers, photographers and movie producers. Techs will see things differently (I know, I’m a techie!). It’s all about the education – same information, different delivery – and teaching thinking, problem solving and many other skills to prepare them for life. Does it matter if a student uses a Mac or a Windows PC? Not if they get the life skills (although I believe the Mac is a much more engaging platform). Glenn, I would recommend you talk to teachers in schools that are using iPads and make your decision based on that and your schools needs. We work with a lot of schools mostly going MacBooks, but we have several schools trialling iPads. Use Albums in iPhoto on your Mac to sort the photos into Albums first. If you are wanting to sort the photos imported directly from a camera into the iPad, without using a computer. One App for doing this on the iPad that I’ve read ‘good' and 'not so good' reviews about is Photo-Sort for iPad. http://photo-sort.webs.com/ /Quote: Photo-Sort for iPad - Organize your photos and videos into folders Want to organize and name your photos and videos as you want, directly on your iPad, and without needing to go through a computer, use Photo-Sort. Stolen iPhone
Evening all After spending a weekend with my new iPad2 ( yeh!) I have been brought back down to earth with news that my partner had her iPhone4 stolen today. We did the whole find my phone thing but my guess is that it was turned it off straight away as it could not be found. I have tested it awhile ago and it worked fine. The phone carrier has been notified and a new sim has been issued and the number changed over. I have sent a remote lock and a message and my question is this, if they take the sim card out replace it with a new one can it still be tracked. Hi Carlo and Ronni Thanks for that. No, unfortunately there was no passcode set ( a lesson there for everyone reading this) and the police asked for the IMEI but not the phone carrier. That will probably require that you choose software relevant to your son's needs but that is a whole other question and possibly one that dedicated groups are already addressing.a) So 3G or Wifi only? If you intend to used the internet from you iPad mainly from home, work or a WiFi enabled public place, such as many cafes and libraries you can get by with the Wifi only model. You will need 3G only if you make significant use of the iPad while outside (say the map application) or in areas where you do not have access to WiFi -- perhaps customer sites if you are in the service industry. To use 3G you would need a data plan either prepay or postpay. It is true that iOS 4.3 will have a personal hotspot feature, the current version of iOS already has a tethering feature. You can only use this if your carrier allows it. Internode, for one, currently allows tethering but they could choose to charge extra for this feature at any time. ATT in the US, for instance, charges $20 a month for 1GB of data using tethering.b) How much memory? If you want the iPad mainly to run apps for yourself and your family, then the 16GB is probably sufficient. Once you start to store media on the iPad such as films or photo's they you may find that you need more memory (32GB or 64GB).I, personally, went for the 3G / 32GB model. I have not to this point used the 3G feature apart from some tests of tethering and once at a cafe with friends to show them some features of the iPad. :-}. The 32GB has been way more than enough memory for me because I keep my main iTunes collection on my MacBook Pro and only transfer a small number of films and photos to the iPad on an as needed basis. My main video consumption on the iPad is the iView feature of the ABC. iView programs can be viewed with either a dedicated iView app on the iPad, which uses no storage, or by streaming the programs from my MacBook Pro with a app called Video Server -- this also uses no storage.I went for a slightly cheaper iPad because I was planning even at the time to get and iPad 2 as well. This time I will likely get WiFi only / 16 GB as that will meet my needs.Cheers,CarloOn 2011-03-09, at 20:58, Brian Risbey wrote:Hi everyone, about to lash out on an iPad2 but which model?I believe that the next iPad/ iPhone software update will include a data hotspot enabling both our iPhone4s to allow data and Internet access- if so I would only need a wifi version, correct?Apparently iPads are great for children with Autism, my son has one available to him at school hence the interest.BrianSent from my iPhone-- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List --Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtmlGuidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtmlUnsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au-- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List --Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtmlGuidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtmlUnsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au --TheWAMacintoshUserGroupMailingList-- Archives-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe-mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au --TheWAMacintoshUserGroupMailingList-- Archives-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe-mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au 15" MacBookPro 2.66 GHzCore i74GB/1067 MHz 500GBOS X 10.6.5 Snow Leopard --TheWAMacintoshUserGroupMailingList-- Archives-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe-mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

Re: MacBook Air vs MacBook pro
Just had a play with a new one down at the new MAXstyle Myree store, which I am very impressed with, lots of room and all the apple goodies on show and very friendly and informative staff.I must say I am very impressed with the new air. Very fast and enough power to do almost anything. We had over seven different programmes running including safari and it still had enough power to run imovie with ease. It of course would not replace a desk top and if I was travelling with one I would take a small portable hard drive if I planned to take a lot of photos, but for me, its a winner Anyone interested in a near new 13" MacBookPro ? hacheersPedroOn 09/11/2010, at 5:06 PM, Aurora74 wrote:Yep the second ed. At least they have given an extra USB slot on the new one. Remote DVD share has been disappointingly slow. I have cloned my install discs to USB keys which works well.Start up/shut down is great. Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem or software as Daniel has mentioned. Frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device can cause Kernel Panic. Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. 'Looping On' should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run, perhaps overnight. In case no problem is found after running the test overnight, you can exit the loop and stop the test by clicking on the Stop Test or Cancel buttons. Hi Stuart Pity you can not wait a little longer as a new iPhone will be due out sometime this year. You check the phone plans here, http://mobile-phones.watoday.com.au/MobilePhones?s_rid=watoday:affiliatestrip:content3:mobile_60x90_99unlimited Pedro On 06/04/2010, at 8:02 AM, Eugene wrote: Hi Stuart, how long is a piece of string? Plans have to be weighed up according to your usage. You need to work out how many calls you expect to make, whether a data plan is important, even who has the best coverage in your area. THere are a few sites that that give you comparisons in plans but then again you first need to weigh up your needs. As far as finding your phone, when you get your next bill it will have an itemised list indicating the suburb where the calls were made as indicated by phone towers in that area. The police can use triangulation to get a more accurate location of the phone but they won't resort to this method just to find a lost phone because according to them it is an expensive procedure and the phone needs to be turned on of course. Evening all This post is in two parts. Firstly I hope everyone survived the carnage alright. I saw the intensity of the storm on my Pkt weather app and raced home to make sure everything was secured and all the electronics were unplugged. In doing so I saved the new iMac, big screen TV and the old PC which still has a bit of useful info on it. Trouble is I forgot about the telephone line and the TV aerial. Result, one very close lightning strike fried the telephone, netgear modum and the Sony DVD recorder. All will have to be repaired or replaced. The first two can be replaced with one item. BOB from iinet. Does anyone on the list have any experience with this device? Well worth it for just those sort of instances. They also cover the phone line as well. Come with a lifetime warranty and also protected equipment warranty as well. Re: Shared tab missing
Hi James Have done a re-start as you suggested and checked both are on the same network and still no shaw. How do I determine if bonjour is working? Pedro On 13/01/2010, at 8:57 PM, James Devenish wrote: Hi Pedro, For a Mac to show 'Shared' in the Finder's sidebar, there must be at least two computers correctly operating on the same network. This is because Shared is hidden for solo computers. Your computers seem to think they are solo, and a failure in merely one of the pair would cause this to happen. You should double-check that both computer are truly connected to the same wireless access point. (E.g,., it's possible for one of them to have latched onto a neighbour's wireless by mistake.) Secondly, Bonjour must be working on both computers. Bonjour is essential for automatic Sharing in both the Finder and iTunes. So just in case Bonjour has failed, you should restart both computers (reboot one of them about 10 seconds after the other, to be sure, and then check their Airport network names in the Network System Preferences). I'm pretty sure that the 'Shared' sidebar should be visible in the Finder even if File Sharing is turned off. Re: Shared tab missing
Hi Ronni The network is set up through a Netgear ADSL2+ wireless modem/router. No Airport Extreme/Express/Time Capsule is in place and both the iMac and MacBook access the internet wirelessly through it. I looked at what James said yesterday and as both are able to access the internet and all the right shared boxes are ticked I was stumped as to why they could not see each other. It was not until I rebooted the modem that all is working fine. My nearest neighbour is about half a kilometre away so no other network would cause trouble either. iTunes sharing is also working fine and Alison is now enjoying Aretha Franklin on her new iMac Again thank you everyone for their input cheers Pedro On 14/01/2010, at 12:18 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: Ok Pedro, Shared is only present in the sidebar if you have any connected severs or any bonjour computers on your local network. If none of these are available the Shared section will disappear. It will reappear when needed. So, as James suggested yesterday, somehow your iMac MacBook are either not connected to the same Network, or sharing is not setup correctly. How is your Wireless Network setup, are you using the wireless through an Airport Extreme or Express or are you just using an ADSL Wireless Modem/Router? Why I'm asking this, is if your have Wireless enabled on an ADSL Modem as well as on an Airport Extreme/Express/Time Capsule it will cause problems. You should disable wireless on the ADSL wireless Modem and just use an Airport hardware to setup an Airport Wireless Network. Has this problem only happened after ?? Have you been able to Share with these two computers before on your Network? Cheers, Ronni On 14/01/2010, at 12:02 PM, Pedro wrote: Hi Ronni Tried that , still no go. Got myself an HP C4480 All In One.It printed and copied fine, but would not scan.I have emailed HP numerous times regarding this and also downloaded all the updates. However I still have a printer that cannot scan.I have decided to cut my losses and make another purchase. Can anyone please recommend one up to $120 that works totally with the latest OSX ?I am happy to change brands if necessary (although I would prefer HP or Canon)Regards,Stephen ChapeHi StephanI'm not sure if this will help your current situation but I bought a inexpensive HP all in one awhile back and was usingit on my MacBook using the included software. For the price it worked fine although the software was a little flakey and not very user friendly. When Snow Leopard was being released all the guru's on the list advised everyone to clean out their computers and do a little house work. One of the programmes that was not supported was the HP printer so I uninstalled the driver and waited until HP undated it.Once it was announced all their current printers were updated all I did was plug the printer into the usb port and OSX did the rest. It advised me that new software wasavailable and I downloaded it and haven't looked back. It now prints and scans better than ever and it is all done through System PreferencesHope this helpscheersPedro -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List --Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtmlGuidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtmlUnsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au MacBook 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo2 GB/667 MHz 160GBOS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard --TheWAMacintoshUserGroupMailingList-- Archives-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe-mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
