My contacts/calendars have stopped syncing (Again!) I’ve carefully gone through
the procedures (Sent to me by Ronni-your good self) to no avail. I’ve just
updated the OS to 10.10.2. but the problem existed before the update.
I haven’t “Fiddled” with any settings that might cause this problem. Please

Do you mean the 'Sound' pane in System Preferences is missing?

If preference panes go missing, follow these instructions:

 1. Quit System Preferences (if its open).

 2. Open your User Folder, and then navigate to the ~/Library/Caches folder. (
The tilde symbol ~ is an abbreviation for your Home folder.)
If you're unsure where your Home folder is, use your Go menu to take you
 there.

 3. Delete the ?com.apple.preferencepanes.cache? file.

 4. Open System Preferences, it should work normally.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

Robert, I've recently gone through some similar travails.

My solutions were to log out of iCloud on each device, leave it a few
 minutes, then log back in.

Sometimes it seems to need a reset.

 Hi Robert,

Have you gone through the steps in the two tutorials I did for you Offlist
 last November?
Setup iCloud on a Mac and iOS Devices.pdf Calendar Contacts Not
 Syncing to iCloud.pdf.

 A) Calendar not syncing to iCloud
 1. On your Mac Check the Calendars are in ?iCloud? NOT ?On My Mac?
When you create an event make sure it is on the ?iCloud? Calendar (Look at
the Calendar field - when you edit the event)

 * Only Calendars and Contacts in iCloud groups will sync.

 2. On your iPhone - check your Default account in
Settings Mail, Contacts, Calendar scroll to Calendars section - Default
Calendar - iCloud (Calendar in iOS7)

 B) Contacts not syncing to iCloud
 1. On your Mac - Open Contacts from your Dock
Contacts Preferences - General (Accounts in Mavericks) - Default Account:
 iCloud
Contacts Preferences - Accounts - iCloud (enable this account is ticked)

In the Tutorial Calendar Contacts Not Syncing to iCloud.pdf
Calendar not syncing to iCloud - Page 1 2
Contacts not syncing to iCloud - Page 2 3

Thanks Ronni Daniel!.No luck with control command F Ronni, however,Daniels
suggestion worked!

On 2 Dec 2013, at 9:15 pm, Daniel Kerr wa...@macwizardry.com.au wrote:

 Hi Robert

If no joy with Ronni's suggestion a couple of others to try that can also
 work,….

 1. If you hover over the top of the iTunes window (about in the middle) then
you'll see the icon change to an arrow pointing up and down. Drag this down
to make the top of the iTunes window smaller. Then once you've made is
smaller that way, click in the grey area at the top and move the whole window
up. This should bring it up below where you can see it. Sometimes you have
to repeat this a few times to get it working. (You can also do the same with
the left and right sides as well to bring it in, if it ever goes that way as
 well).

 2. In System Preferences, go to Displays. Depending which version of the OS
you're running, the next step can differ. But where it says Resolution
change this to scaled. Then choose a resolution lower then what you're
running. (e.g. 1600x1200 or 1280x960). This will then shrink all the
window. iTunes should then shrink to fit into the window you're working. Then
go back and change it the resolution back to the higher resolution. This
should generally then keep iTunes at the smaller resolution it was at when
you changed it. You can then drag the corner out to make it bigger again.

 3. If you can get to the Window menu in iTunes, you can go to Zoom then it
will expand out to the full size of the screen. Then you can drag the corner
 into the size you want.

Hopefully something out of these suggestions works with Ronni's as well.

Let us know how you go.

 Kind regards
 Daniel

 Hi all.

The time is fast approaching for our annual general meeting which is held
in conjunction with the March monthly meeting each year.

This year's AGM will be held in conjunction with the monthly meeting at
 the FutureSphere.

At this year's AGM, the Committee, as usual and as required, will stand
down and the meeting will elect a new committee for 2013.

 NOMINATIONS for the Committee

We are calling for nominations for the committee. Please consider standing
for the committee to assist WAMUG. The committee is a totally voluntary
group that is always looking for some fresh views and ideas. Whilst
committee meetings are held every month, you may not be able to attend
every one. Please don't let this stand in your way. Even if you can only
attend a few throughout the year, please consider becoming a member. There
is a committee email group that keeps all connected as well.

The committee must have a minimum of five members to function under the
constitution. We currently just have that minimum five members. At this
stage, most of the current committee have stated a willingness to stand
again but we ask for your help to keep the committee functioning well.

 Please consider it.

You can nominate via a reply to this list if you so wish but I'm trying to
organise a specific off list email address for people to use. It will be
available within a day or two.

Special Resolutions - name change and constitution amendments

There will be a number of special resolutions put at the AGM dealing with
the previously discussed change of name of WAMUG plus some amendments
recommended by the Department of Commerce to comply with statute law.

I apologise that these resolutions have not yet appeared on the web site.
They will be up within a couple of days along with a proxy voting form for
those who are unable to attend the meeting but wish to vote - and you are
 encouraged to vote.

To force quit an application, choose Force Quit from the Apple menu (or
press Command-Option-Esc), then choose the unresponsive application in the
Force Quit window, and click Force Quit.

Optionally, you may be able to Option-right click the application's icon in
the Dock and choose Force Quit from the contextual menu.

Additionally, you can force quit the front-most application in Mac OS X
v10.5 or later by pressing Command-Option-Shift-Esc for three seconds

If the disc is spinning it won't come out!
 Disrupt the spin:
If you listen carefully, you can probably hear your optical drive powering
up down over and over again.
As long as the disc spins, it’s not coming out.
The first step is to get your hands on a very thin piece of cardboard or
even a folded business card (so it’s twice as thick).

Now restart your Mac and hold down the mouse/trackpad button as you poke the
 cardboard inside the SuperDrive slot.
The goal is to slip it above the CD or DVD — towards the left side of the
drive — and gently jiggle it around to put pressure on the disc. You might
have to continue this for up to a minute or so, but it often works when all
 other methods fail.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

To force quit an application, choose Force Quit from the Apple menu (or
press Command-Option-Esc), then choose the unresponsive application in the
Force Quit window, and click Force Quit.

Optionally, you may be able to Option-right click the application's icon
in the Dock and choose Force Quit from the contextual menu.

Now restart your Mac and hold down the mouse/trackpad button as you poke
the cardboard inside the SuperDrive slot.
The goal is to slip it above the CD or DVD — towards the left side of the
drive — and gently jiggle it around to put pressure on the disc. You might
have to continue this for up to a minute or so, but it often works when
 all other methods fail.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

Ah that is good to hear Bob,

If I sounded a bit abrupt last night I apologise. I had started work at 5:30
and it was a heavy work day.
I had just put my meal in the microwave (I don't cook), poured a glass of red
and sat down to 'take a break'... when you 'HELP' email came in.
Sounded as though urgent help was needed, and thinking it would only take one
email reply to you to sort it, I replied but that did not happen and the
rest is history ;-) All is good that ends well.

 Kind Regards,
 Ronni

 Hi Robert

I've switched a few people over from mobile me hosting to my hosting
 service business (http://www.hostingservicewa.com.au).
It has a lot of the MobileMe features and a lot more. All can be run out
of Cpanel (easy to work with) and has file manager and a lot more. Plus a
lot more email and features as well if required.
You can directly upload from iWeb. The reason to either use the File
Manager or an FTP upload program is that MobileMe has a way to sort of
 wreck the domain name.
For example if you have your own domain name and then upload from iWeb
you'l get an address that looks like
http://www.mydomainname.com.au/mydomainname/home.html so it doubles it up.
Whereas by saving to a folder then directly uploading you get a much nicer
 looking web address http://www.mydomain.com.au

I also use Transmit, and although not free it's quite cheap for it's
feature set, and it's very easy to use. You can favourite your site on
the left hand side (in a Finder looking window) and your Domain in the
right hand side. It then has a Sync feature that you just click on, and
any changes made in your site locally get uploaded to your site online.
Very easy. I've set a few of these up for other clients and shown them how
to use it all, while I was out doing other consulting work.

My hosting set is actually written in iWeb and uploaded from the folder.
 Very easy to look after.

 Hope that information helps :o)

 5. I have done the rebuild and synchronise account.
 6. I have to send this from my iBook because I can't receive or send emails
 now.
The hard drive is getting full and I have tried to clear some space but
perhaps it is not enough to enable Mail to rebuild.
(My quick solution is to go to Officeworks this morning and get an external
to clear a lot more space on the hard drive OR if the group can suggest
somewhere else to get an external quickly, I have to do this anyway because
the drive is getting towards capacity)

 Hi Rick,

Is this a POP Account and are you leaving Mail on The Server?
If it is and you are leaving mail on the server, go to Mail File
Preferences Select the Account, select the Advanced Tap, check Remove copy
from server after retrieving a message:, and select “Remove Now”.
That will leave nothing on the mail server if you are comfortable with that.
Then, manually delete any additional messages that may be taking up extra
 space.

You can then remove as much as possible from your Hard Drive until you have
 enough Free Space on it.
Sounds like your Mail might require some clearing out and your Hard Drive.

It's under the Universal Access prefs, and there's a button there to

Re: OS 10.6.8/OS Lion Question

2011-08-05 Thread Robert Miller-Eves

HEELP!
I decided to try Carlo's suggestion - Made a Carbon Cloner copy on ext. drive,
Partitioned the internal Drive (Mac OS Extended(Journaled).Installed Lion on
main System,Installed snow leopard on small partition and applicable soft ware.

Results!
Lion will not open as default -have to hold option on startup otherwise I get
the spinning wheel and a circle with the diagonal line.
On startup with option I get the Lion Volume but no Snow Leopard Volume. The
Leopard Volume does show up on the desktop in Lion.
tried running Disk Warrior on the Leopard Volume to no avail.
Checked out Spotlight Prefs in both systems.Need more help with that !
Please help.Thanks!

 Hi Robert,

Just to add to what Ronda has said and to give you some other options.
Assuming you are migrating towards Lion on your iMac, you have a number of
options to run 10.6 Snow Leopard in an auxiliary role.

Here is a setup that I recently put in place for someone with an iMac. A
large internal partition of the hard drive runs OS X 10.7 Lion and this
partition also contains all the data files, while a much smaller internal
partition contains OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard can see all the data
files available to Lion. To boot into Snow Leopard, one just restarts the
computer while holding down the Option key and one sees a selection menu to
choose either operating system. By default the computer boots into OS X 10.7
 Lion.

To get this setup proceed as follows. I will give just a thumbnail sketch of
the steps below, but if you want to proceed and can't follow the abbreviated
steps, please write back to the group.

 1) Make a clone of your system to an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner
or equivalent, just to give you an exit strategy should something go wrong.
 2) Use Disk Utility to make a new small partition on your internal drive, 50
 - 150 GB should be ample. Use the default Mac OS Extended (journaled) format.
 3) Run the Lion upgrade application to move your main system to OS X 10.7
 Lion.
 4) Install a new copy of Snow Leopard on the small partition and install the
software you would like to run under Snow Leopard there.

Now you can will boot into Lion by default but can boot into Snow Leopard by
holding down the Option key. You can run Freehand and Photoshop CS2 by
 booting into Snow Leopard.

There are a number of variations to the above. One is to put Snow Leopard on
an external drive. If this is bootable (as described by Ronni below) you can
boot into it by holding down the option key. Another variation is to use copy
your original bootable Snow Leopard install back to the the small partition
-- this, however, will likely require you to make your Snow Leopard install
much smaller by deleting redundant files.

Remember that while you may not be able run certain applications on both
systems, all the data files of each operating system are visible to both
operating systems, so there is not need to maintain two copies of your data
 files.

One small complication is that you need to stop Spotlight from indexing both
operating system application files. That is to say, if you use Spotlight to
launch, say, Disk Utility (as I do), you don't want the Lion version showing
up in Snow Leopard, and the Snow Leopard version showing up in Lion. This is
solved by excluding the Snow Leopard Application file from within the
Spotlight preferences on Lion, and excluding the Lion Application folder from
within the Spotlight preferences on Snow Leopard.

 Cheers,
 Carlo

 Hi Robert,

I would suggest a better way is to do what I have done. I cloned my OS X
10.6.8 system using Super Duper (you can use Carbon Copy Cloner if you
prefer) onto a bootable External FW Drive. Then purchased Lion OS X 10.7
from the App Store and installed Lion on an external FW Drive.

This way I can boot into Lion for testing purposes before I decide if I want
it on my main work MacBook Pro.
By doing this, my work MBP is not being disturbed by any ‘glitches’ that I
 might find using Lion.

You can use a USB External; Drive if you wish, I just prefer using FW drives
(of which I have many ;-)
Very important: You first must format the external drive in ‘GUID Partition
Table’ Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled) otherwise you will not be able
 to boot from the drive.
(If you require details how to format an external drive, please post back

 Hi Robert,

Don't panic, I think you are in a reasonably good position.

I just want to confirm where you stand. The way I read it, you have the
 following

 1) A fully operational OS X 10.7 Lion install on your main hard drive
 2) A backup of your old system on an external drive
 3) A non-functioning install of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on a partition of
 your main hard drive.

So let's see if we can get you to where you need to be from where you are.

On problem seems to be that Lion does not boot up by default. To change
 that please try the following:
 * By holding down the Option key, boot into Lion.
 * Bring up System Preferences = Startup Disk
 * Select Mac OS X, 10.7 as the system you want to use to start up your
 computer

The system should now reboot into Lion.

Don't worry about Spotlight for now, it will do no harm and we can fix that
 later.

Finally, I have a question for you. Please do the following:
 * With the computer shut down, plug in your external hard drive -- the one
with the Snow Leopard 10.6 backup on it.
 * Reboot while holding down the Option key

Does the external drive appear as a start up option?

If so select it and see if you boot up into your old system.

 Cheers,
 Carlo

Ever since upgrading from OS10.4 only the Pioneer registers and is

The Hitachi shows up in the About this Mac menu but not in the Disc

Re: Certificate invalid password rejected

2009-05-16 Thread Robert Miller-Eves
I think you might find that the problem is at Big Pond's end! I'm
getting a similar problem .I do not use a certificate to log in but
the server rejects my username and password at first attempt -opens in
a different page and then accepts!

I'm changing to highway 1 on Tuesday!

Good morning all,

For the last few days I have been unable to connect to my Bigpond
mail account even-though its Online Status says On Line and my
Mobile Me account and WWW are working OK. On initial attempt to
access it I get a Certificate Invalid prompt that says Certificate
for this server is invalid, you might be connecting to a server that
is pretending to be Bigpond, etc., etc. The certificate looks OK.
to me however when I click connect I get the Password Rejected,
Please re enter it etc. which gets me nowhere and it goes Off Line.

I have run the Keychain First Aid and permissions correction to no
avail. I searched the WAMUG Archive and found the posting for the
last time I had this problem but was unable to find the answer that
fixed it. I will, once again, be indebted to the list if anyone can
solve this problem for me.

you haven't then I'd be looking at doing that as a first priority.

Assuming you have another Mac to hand (yours?) and a firewire
cable, boot

the Emac in target mode and clone it's drive to somewhere, eg:
- spare external drive (ideal)
- disk image on an external drive (with enough space)
- disk image on your machine (again with enough space)

Now, I'd feel safe to address the problem.

As Bob says, sometimes the stand-alone Combo update often works
best for
updating - and the fact that you used Auto update doesn't stop you
running
the Combo update over the top of this - and you shouldn't lose any
info.

Since the problem only appeared after the auto update, it seems highly
likely (though not certain) that this is the root of your problem
and so
running the Combo updater over the top may be all that's needed to
fix it.

For future reference - no one has recommended start up in Single
User Mode, but this can often work wonders with Macs that won't
start up properly. Boot the Mac, then immediately hold down Command-
S until you see some scrolling UNIX code on a black background.
This allows you to run fsck (that's not a bad spelling mistake - it
stands for File System Check). You type fsck -fy at the prompt and
wait for it to do its thing. It has worked for me when even
Diskwarrior has failed. It fixes a multitude of problems with the
disk catalog, permissions, and many other things.

In fact, I had to use it on my old G4 tower just a week or so ago
following an iTunes upgrade. the computer would not progress past a
solid blue screen, but following a restart in Single User Mode and
running fsck ,everything came back to normal and it's been running
perfectly ever since.
