Good morning,

If you have Auto Updates selected does the OS also get automatically updated ?
I am still using Mojave and want to stay with it for now.

Cheers

Re: Interesting read regarding AV Software

2020-06-08 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Stephen and Marcus,

/quote

There are viruses written for the Mac, iPhones and iPads, they do exist but
Apple is successful at deflecting them because Apple expends a huge effort in
keeping their customers safe, protecting customer privacy via an effective
multi layer defense system built into many layers of the operating system
(which deflects viruses, hackers and other malware).

Apple responds very quickly to new virus threats, automatically updating all
Mac, iPhone and iPad users around the world immediately and invisibly. If you
have Automatic Updates” turned on (which is the normal setting for all users),
then you will receive updated virus protection, invisibly, the same day that
Apple releases it. This is why there is no *Active* virus/malware in the Apple
community, so there is nothing to worry about.

Hi Marcus.
I used to use Intego which did slow down my Mac.
But I have had no noticeable slow down with Avast.

However I do recommend the Premium (paid) version.

Re: Interesting read regarding AV Software

2020-06-07 Thread Adam Lippiatt
I recall I had a suspect attachment to an email many years ago reported by the
virus software I was using at the time (I can’t remember which, it may be what
I am using now). But that attachment was said to be a Windows virus. So, in
effect that makes zero effective viruses for me since my first Mac in 1987.

However, in my mind as a low risk but high consequence category, I have
continued to pay for Intego virus software and it has never reported anything
(else).

It doesn’t seem to slow the system down with its “real time scanning”, but if
you want to do a “full scan”, although Activity Monitor doesn’t show much
processor use, it makes the system pretty much unusable and takes a long time
to do the scan.

Ideally I would like to get rid of it.

But, is AV software like vaccination? If enough of us get and stay inoculated,
we have provided immunity for ourselves and herd immunity for the group (ie
disincentivizing Malware creators from bothering with the MacOS)?

Strangely I see Windows as the place where viruses abound, but I run it in
Bootcamp, but for nothing critical to me, so, I haven’t bothered with Windows
AV software. I don’t think I have picked up anything .

People mightn’t recommend Norton’s, but do you run or recommend other AV
software or just think that no AV software is needed?

Thanks

Adam

Yes that is interesting, but do you Personally choose to instal AV software.
I always update my Apple systems ASAP and expect to then be malware secure.
Should I buy Norton as Al suggests?

Re: Interesting read regarding AV Software

2020-06-06 Thread Alex
Hi Marcus & All,

I am not an expert but am a bit dubious about Al & his claims especially when
he promotes Norton. Although my experience with Norton was on a client’s
Windows machine, I found it virtually impossible to delete it from their
computer & it made their computer painfully sluggish to use. Could be
different on the Mac environment? Others may be able to comment better.

Cheers, Alex

Re: Interesting read regarding AV Software

2020-06-06 Thread Stephen Chape
I have been using Avast Premium for about 2 years and I am very happy with it.
Only cost an extra $10.00 for the Family Pack for 3 Macs.
So myself, my wife and our daughter use it.

It has warned me on several occasions when an attempt was made to hack my Mac.
It also found 3 Malwares on our daughter’s Mac and destroyed them.

Of course a skeptic would say that was designed to impress me as a customer.
But I like to feel that it was genuine.
