My first reservation was that the documents are stored on a server and are thus vulnerable to being stolen if the server is compromised, or (less likely) if Dropbox changes its policy and decides to reap my private data. The other reservation I had was that the default install on a Mac is quite invasive and adds tentacles to Finder and runs a background sync process. I mitigate the privacy issue by not putting critical data in Dropbox. So I would avoid storing in Dropbox any data that could lead to identity theft such as passwords or bank accounts. For my other concern it turns out that one can reverse many of the OS changes done by the default Dropbox install. You can, as you guessed, leave your files where they currently are. For any data directory that I wish to have Dropbox sync with its server I place a symbolic link in the Dropbox directory linked back to my data directory. This can be done in the Termnal as follows. (Note: I have also moved my Dropbox directory to a more convenient location using Dropbox preferences, but it is your choice if you wish to do that.) If the directory you want to share is /Users/blitto/mydata and your Dropbox folder is at /Users/blitto/Dropbox you could use the following Terminal commands to create the symlink. $ cd /Users/blitto/Dropbox $ ln -s /Users/blitto/mydata The second command, ln will do the link and the switch -s tells the link command to make a symbolic or soft link rather than a hard link. I was trying to add an edited .mov file taken with my iPhone but it seemed all too difficult for Sandvox. Seems like it uses a Quicktime plugin and Windows users need to have quicktime installed before they can use it. Maybe the problem was that I'd edited the movie in iPhoto, shortening it, and then YouTube wouldn't accept the modified file, only the full version - but that's a different issue. In Sandvox, your website is stored in a single file on your computer. You double-click it to open and edit the site. I'm sure you have used Apple’s Pages word processor / page layout editor, so you’ll soon see how things work. Working in Sandvox 2.6.4 is similar to iWeb with 'drag drop' interface, but it has much more to offer. Also once you have designed your website, Sandvox generates it using HTML5, and makes sure the code is compatible with all major browsers on the Mac PC, and with Mobile Devices. I have kept a copy my iWeb Site on my computer so have been able to drag items I wanted to use when building my Sandvox website. This file was downloaded from my hosted website (not MobileMe). You can continue using iWeb, but it doesn't look like Apple will ever update it, so eventually you will probably find you need to use another program. My new - built in Sandvox (still a work in progress) support website is at ronnibrown.net I use HostingServicesWA as my Hosting Service which was originally a subsidiary of MacWizardry, now its own business. I recommend HostingServicesWA; as my experience with them has been problem free. Mum's Internet
Dear WAMUGers FINALLY i think i have convinced mum and dad to get the Internet. I also looked at the possibility of using my Canon camcorder (AVCHD coding) as a USB camera for direct iMovie recording. No success. I understand some old firewire DV camcorders might work. I did a brief search for camcorder to webcam software converters but had no success. Forum articles seem to stop discussing the issue about 6 years ago. I bought a Logitech c615 HD webcam (USB) for under $100. It has a fixed focus. I use it with an active 5 metre USB extension cord. I've had video cameras in the past, but now tend to choose one of my stills cameras when I want to capture video, with excellent results. It also depends on how much zoom you want, as well. A Sony DSC HX9V captures good video quality, stereo sound of reasonable quality given its a small camera, and since you can record at 60 frames per second, it can be adjusted to smooth slow motion video. It's been out for about a year so shouldn't be very expensive to buy. Any video is space hungry, so they will need an external hard drive for storage which I think can be set up in iMovie. Portable Hard disk failure?
Dear WAMUGers I bought a Lacie USB portbale hard drive for school about a fortnight ago. Once or twice it seemed a little slow to mount or appear on my mac. Today i plugged it in and it did not mount. I tried both of my USB ports, checked the cable etc etc. Dirk Utility could not se it either. I tried it on another mac - same thing. Later i gave it a little band on the desk and guess what - it mounted! Any suggestions? Well, I did not have a iPad 3 so can't really comment whether that is correct. But I have found the speed amazing, I could not believe the speed when I first opened Mail and it downloaded well over a thousand emails, Inbox and Sent from my four email accounts, in a flash. Safari loads web pages very fast... everything is fast on this iPad ;-) The Retina Display is beautiful, displays images so clearly. Reading text and eBooks and ePUB books is a pure delight. There were a couple of moments where the Apple guy seemed to have toexplain to the Telstra guy just how the plan worked:"no, no, that's not applicable to this plan - this is what it says on your(Telstra's) website!"Anyway, he finally declared it set-up, we activated the SIM and I made sureI made my first phone call before I left the AppleStore. What is niggling me, is that my bills are actually showing as:NextG CapPlan $49: $39.003G Data Pack 200MB: $10.003G Data Pack Promotional offer: $5.00crGiving a monthly total: $44.00So, one the one hand, I seem to only have a 200MB data allowance - whereas Iwas told, at sign-up, that the Telstra NextG CapPlan $49 for the iPhoneincluded a 500MB data allowance - but, on the other hand, I seem to begetting $5/month discount on the data plan.So far, I haven't been downloading much data - I'm always connectedwirelessly at home and (so far) don't do that much away from home - so ithasn't been a problem - but, given Telstra's exorbitant data rates, I wouldhate to one month use more than 200MB and get hit with a huge bill.I am trying to work out what went wrong with the sign-up - but the Telstracontract I signed at the AppleStore, under Mobile Plan details, just says:Other: $49 NextG CapWith no mention of included data allowances.200MB was the data allowance on this plan before they announced the increasein data allowances at the end of July - the allowance was increased to 500MBif you signed up between 30 July and 30 September - so I was well withinthis envelope.Of course the plans have all changed since then, so Telstra's site is of nohelp (not that it ever is!).Given that I seem to be getting a "3G Data Pack Promotional offer" - I amwondering if that is how they implemented the increased data allowances intheir (very confusing) system - eg, if the $49 plan had been implemented asadvertised would it show something like:NextG CapPlan $49: $39.003G Data Pack 500MB: $20.003G Data Pack Promotional offer: $10.00crGiving a monthly total: $49.00(I'm just guessing here!)Is there anyone else out there who signed up for the Telstra NextG CapPlan$49 between 30 July and 30 September who could tell me how their bill ismade up?I guess at the moment I'm wondering whether to leave things as is and save$5/month (given I seem to be staying below 200MB, at present) or chase it upto get the plan, as advertised, with 500MB data (which should remove anyexcess data worries) - and, presumably, be up for another $5/month.Any feedback gratefully received ;o)CheersNeil-- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List --Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtmlGuidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtmlUnsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au --TheWAMacintoshUserGroupMailingList-- Archives-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe-mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

Can't replace HD in new iMacs?
http://www.tuaw.com/2011/05/12/owc-replacing-main-hard-drive-with-third-party-is-not-an-option/OWC: Replacing main hard drive with third party is not an option in new iMacsbyMegan Lavey-Heaton(RSS feed)on May 12th, 2011The folks over at Other World Computing, best known for providing affordable upgrades for your Mac,delivered some bad newsregarding installing a third party hard drive in the new Sandy Bridge iMacs.Apparently Apple altered the SATA power connector in such a way that removing the hard drive from the system -- or even the bay it resides -- will cause the hard drive fan to spin at maximum speed. Even further, placing any third party drive in the machine results in the iMac failing theApple Hardware Test, even if that drive was replaced with the same model that the iMac is shipped with.Apple seems to be specifically disallowing hard drives they don't approve of, locking new iMac owners into AppleCare in case something happens to the hard drive within the first three years or using an Apple-authorized repair center. We'vetouted the virtuesof AppleCaremany times. However, a good many tend keep their iMacs much longer than three years, and a hard drive is guaranteed to eventually fail. But since upgrading the current iMacs involveremoving the screen, even thoughiFixIt says it is fairly easyto access the internal drive, I wouldn't want to go near that anyhow, and neither would your average custom Rod Blitvich-Amy Sam’s Dad. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .0409 681 256 rb...@iinet.net.auhttp://web.me.com/blittoThe day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suckis probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners --TheWAMacintoshUserGroupMailingList-- Archives-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines-http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe-mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
What Happens to my iDisk and MobileMe websites
found this this morning on TUAWcheersBlittoWhat happens to our iDisk and MobileMe websites with the introduction of iCloud? For now, nothing. All MobileMe accounts have been extended to June 30, 2012, so nothing will change for a year. You'll still have your websites and iDisk information; Apple isn't going to suddenly delete it on you.As far as the long term implications of iCloud on MobileMe, we have heard a few reports from users talking to AppleCare Support that there will be a form of iDisk in iCloud this fall. However, until Apple says so, nothing is official (although we sure can speculate). In the meantime, it's business as usual. Keep using your iDisk and MobileMe websites as if nothing happened Monday. Everything will keep working, at least for another year.I will say this though: lots and lots of Apple employees use iDisk and the MobileMe websites every day. All Apple employees receive a free MobileMe account, and they would be the first ones to give feedback if the services suddenly disappeared. Apple is reportedly "so pumped up" about Lion that it wants to ship the new machines with Lion preinstalled rather than forcing users to upgrade on their own once the new operating system is released next month. For instance, new Thunderbolt-enabled Sandy Bridge MacBook Air models expected to go into production this month have been ready and waiting for some time, according to people familiar with the matter. But management is currently unwilling to usher the new models into the market with the current Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system.Instead, the Mac maker is said to be locked on waiting till it can image the new notebooks with a Gold Master build of Lion so that buyers are afforded the latest and greatest Apple experience." I have only used about $2 worth of the data. My re-charge options are a bit horrific, only one month choices or one year (see below): $20 1GB (1.95c per MB), 30 days expiry $30 3GB (0.97c per MB), 30 days expiry $60 6GB (0.97c per MB), 30 days expiry $80 9GB (0.86c per MB), 30 days expiry $100 12GB (0.81c per MB), 30 days expiry $180 12GB (1.46c per MB), 365 days expiry Quite disappointed with Telstra over this. If I use the Cloud and sync my contacts, do all my contacts go into the cloud taking them away from, or off my laptop? Should this be the case then if I'm out of range of either phone or internet does this mean I can't access my contacts until I come back into range/area? 2. Does this apply to all sync'ed info like, music or calendar information? 3. Which device takes preference in the sync? If I make alterations on both devices, e.g. laptop and ipad, and one alteration updates another, what happens? Thanks in anticipation. And you can leave it in, all the time? cheers blitto the Smartsuit Slim MicroSD card adapter from Apotop can add up to 64GB of storage to your 13in MacBook Air or MacBook Pro; the drive just slips into the often-idle SD Card slot on your computer, automatically augmenting your available memory.
