Does anyone know which browsers have implemented
the headers attribute of td elements?

There is a th element that's specifically a table header cell which
(afaik) is implemented by all current browsers but (afaik) does nothing
different from a td

But I probably entirely missed the point of your question :-/

[wdvltalk] RE: Hosting a home-made site!

2003-01-20 Thread Jon Haworth
Hi Tony,

 Basically, the site's a bookstore
prototyped on a jakarta-tomcat-4.0.1 server and
 incorporates a shopping cart model.

You've got quite hefty set of technologies there, sounds like it's quite a
project :-)

You didn't say what sort of price you were after, and it could be difficult
to find a host with everything that you need, but you could do a lot worse
than speak to http://www.f2o.org/ - they offer a piece-by-piece service, so
you might be able to bolt on the bits you want.

If you give us a bit more info about what you're after you may get some more
suggestions... did you want a dedicated server? co-lo? just some space on a
box somewhere?

Cheers
Jon

Usually it's styled differently (IE6 does it bold centre by default).

Apart from that, it's identical - it's even the same definition in the DTD:

  !ELEMENT (TH|TD) - O (%flow;)* -- table header cell, table data

No navigation probs - well, other than I'd need the map to know where the

have is on the content side - I didn't find anything on what people are
allowed to do with their mobile home when they aren't in it... what
restrictions there are on renting outside the family, for example. I might
have missed it...

Good site!

[wdvltalk] RE: WinXP

2003-01-20 Thread Cheryl D. Wise
If you purchase the upgrade from the same company that your purchased a
*new* computer with Windows XP Home you can upgrade for $79. It is a MS
promotion. Mark was asking specifically about purchasing a new PC.

If you are going to upgrade an existing machine you can't get it for that
price at least not legally. However if you upgrade certain computer
components at the same time such as adding a hard drive, DVD, etc. you can
purchase the Windows XP full OEM version for less than the upgrade price.
I've done that in the past when upgrading a system and OS at the same time.
Last time I did that I think I purchased the OEM version with a new system
board/cpu for a total of less than $200. Moved the computer from a K6-400 to
an Athlon 1200 which was a very noticeable improvement in performance and
allowed me to keep all the ram, etc. that I already had.

[wdvltalk] Windows screenshots - with mouse pointer

2003-01-20 Thread Jon Haworth
Hi all,

This is a *really* trivial question, but Googling didn't help and none of
the three technically-inclined people who work here have any idea :-)

I know that PrintScreen and Alt+PrintScreen take screenshots of the whole
screen and the active window respectively, but they automatically hide the
mouse pointer. This is usually a very good thing, but I've just had to:

- take a screenshot
- open control panel, mouse
- take another screenshot
- crop the hand pointer out of the mouse control panel applet
- paste it over my screenshot

To save me a couple of mins next time I need to do this, anyone know if I
can just hold down Shift (or something) to keep the pointer visible?

Cheers

You could try: www.techsmith.com they have a program
called SNAGIT which works great for screen shots. I can
do screen shots w/or w/o the mouse, just move the mouse
off the area where you want the screen shot and it's not
there.

There's usually some more processing I want to do to the image anyway.
Surely you must have a graphics package installed that can do screen

[wdvltalk] td headers

2003-01-20 Thread David Blakey
Maybe I should ask this a different way.

What I am trying to do
In my table, each 'cell' will have five cells: two side by side and then
three more below. The headings of each column will also show this block of
five pattern. It is actually similar to having five columns in a group but
arranging them differently. The first column will be a 'straight' set of
headings. To make things easy for people using a visual browser, the five
'mini-cells' will each be a different color, and this will be the same in
the column headings as well. All of this is easy to do and pretty
straightforward. Anyone who cannot see the table and the colors could be
confused. I would like audio browsers to say the column header for each
mini-cell.

What I would like to know
I can specify a name for each th element in the headings. eg, th
name=meantime.
I can specify a reference to this heading in each td element. eg, td
headers=meantime.
What I want to know is how I can test this. If I can't get it to work on a
generally available audio browser, then I shall find some other way.
Maybe someone in the US who has done something similar on federal sites can
help.

David

[wdvltalk] Re: td headers

2003-01-20 Thread Janet M. Russeau
I think you can add the title attribute to each TD so you could add a
small description of each cell's content. e.g. title=First description
here

From what I understand about audio browsers, is that they will read the
text contained in the title attribute. You can add the 'title' attribute
to your links as well to add a better description of what will happen when
the user clicks the link.

Example:
// a href=weekly.html
// title=choose this link to view the weekly schedule of
// events for the week of January 20, 2003.Weekly Events/a
//  for January 20, 2003.

Unfortunately, I haven't used an audio browser yet to test my site either.

[wdvltalk] Validation for body margins

Has anyone ever come up with an alternative way to set body margins that
will validate with W3C's HTML 4.01 Transitional? I'm using the typical:

style=margin:0;padding:0

and this is one of the few errors I have left. Couldn't find much of
anything doing a Google.

You can give any element the attribute Title and visually, this gives a
popup Tooltip containing the text of the title when the mouse cursor is
over the element. It's possible audio browsers would speak the title in a
similar way - worth trying?

[wdvltalk] Re: Validation for body margins

2003-01-20 Thread Janet M. Russeau
When using a style declaration, there is a specific order in which the
attributes have to be listed, e.g. top, right, bottom, left.

You could try listing the attributes in this order and see if it validates.

HTH,
Janet

Has anyone ever come up with an alternative way to set body margins that
will validate with W3C's HTML 4.01 Transitional? I'm using the typical:

   BODY leftmargin=0 topmargin=0 marginwidth=0 marginheight=0
 style=margin:0;padding:0

and this is one of the few errors I have left. Couldn't find much of
 anything doing a Google.

 TIA,

[wdvltalk] Re: td headers

2003-01-20 Thread David Blakey

I use text aloud, a very good text to speech reader. Is that what you
mean by audio browser?

It may be. I didn't want to use the term 'non-visual agent', which I
suppose is the correct technical phrase.

Do you know if it renders 'td headers=meantime' by saying the content of
the 'th' whose id is 'meantime' when it says the content of a 'td'
containing 'headers=meantime'

eg,
for
th id=meantime abbr=mean timeMean time to completion/th
and later
td headers=meantime37.0/td
does it say either of 'Meantime to completion 37.0' or 'mean time 37.0'?

David

I suggest to use stylesheets (CSS) instead of this kind on

and please let me know which browsers you used and your

[wdvltalk] RE: SCR http://www.jdvisions.com/testpage/index.htm

2003-01-20 Thread Joseph Harris
Jan,

If and when OE or my ISP permits mail to be sent...!

(and IE 5.5 on 98SE is a bit slow today) your site seemed to come up
reasonably quickly, though IE didn't find it at first go. Once told to go
fetch it came up fine and the main picture was refreshingly fast in
appearing (56 modem).

Generally your colours and layout form a good background to the pictures and
the white on black wording surprised me with its success. The links worked
quickly (though they are all roads to nowhere as yet).

Buts:
1/The black wording across your logo is not readable enough; you need
either a light shadow or a different colour. If that is light shadow that
you have already tried it isn't enough, or it otherwise isn't doing the job.
Pity. It's a good line.

2/The widow in the last paragraph is a 'jarring note', emphasised because it
is above the bottom picture. I suggest 'lighted' be changed to 'lit' thus
pulling 'night!' on to the line above.Or make the paragraph more active;
See (or Ask about) the miniature inflatables. Print your comapny logos on
any of the puppets. They may be lit (or lighted) to entertain day or
night!

3/The pin-stripe background has one disadvantage which would be enough to
make me leave the site (but I can't stand most effects on televisin either).
When scrolling it gives a flicker effect which is most disturbing; I know
it would be fine if no scrolling were involved, but we surfers are not
considerate about you designers ;-).

Hope these are helpful.

Joseph

jac,

I agree with the others; nice site. Clean, pleasant and attractive to
visit. Particularly like your active letters, their calm and variety.
Fast linking. Also like the arrows identifying where you are; neat.

the buts:

The print was small for my taste, particularly for such a long line length.

Still alot to be done as you'll see - 1 page is missing content but design
wise I think it's almost complete. There's a flash intro (oh no!...) but
 there's also a skip button...

Let me know of any hassles you have with it.

 TIA

[wdvltalk] Re: SCR please: Northern View

2003-01-20 Thread Cheryl D. Wise
In the flash intro I found the blue script a bit difficult to read but I'm
on a 1400 x 1050 laptop monitor which isn't exactly the norm.

Once I entered the site I found the flash text loop very distracting. I'd
stop the effect after playing once because there is a lot of text on the
page and I found it very difficult to read it with the animation constantly
going on off to the side.

Text is too small to read on my computer even with my reading glasses on. I
tried to resize the text but you used a 10px font and I couldn't resize it.
Because you didn't specify header text sizes those I could resize but
frankly I wouldn't stay on the site once I couldn't get the text large
enough to view. I expect that your target audience may well be in my age
range (mid 40s) or greater so you may want to rethink your font size. In the
same vein when the browser window is over 900-950 px wide the line length
gets too long to read comfortably larger text would help there too.

I'll agree with the comment that the arrows are neat.
