Re: [webkit-dev] build.webkit.org down

2013-01-23 Thread William Siegrist
build.webkit.org is back up. I reduced the retention of build archives from 2
weeks to 1 week to regain enough space to get the master running again. I'm
still waiting on space calculations to figure out what ate up all of the space
(the server uses 9TB of space currently after deleting 1TB of archives). We had
over 2TB free last I checked manually, but our server monitor had a typo in its
config that made the build.webkit.org's space usage report 5x lower than it
actually was, so I did not get any alarms until it was too late.

The server might be slow for a while due to the extra CPU and IO load of my
space calculations.

Looks like we have a problem with commit queue.

I don't think the commit queue relies on the database directly and I don't own
the hardware it runs on, so you should start a new thread and be more specific
about the problem you're seeing.

I'm all done with the fix. Due to the way we sync the two servers, you may see
the svnsync author for a few seconds in Trac if you catch the process
half-way through. If the author stays at svnsync for more than a minute, let
me know. I believe the process is fast enough now that this should be rare.

  Hi,

  bugs.webkit.org and trac.webkit.org is unavailable again. :(
  Could you check it, please?

This is caused by a problem on a host that I don't have sufficient
privileges on to be able to address the issue myself. I've pinged people
that should be able to resolve the issue, but given that it's currently 3am
in California it may be a few hours before they're awake and fixing it.

Thank you. Is there any way an on-call or monitoring system could be set up?
While it fortunately occurs much less frequently nowadays than it did
earlier in the year, it --please excuse my directness-- is unacceptable for
a project the size of WebKit to have critical infrastructure unavailable
like this for several hours. Even though it's 3am in California, there are
many contributors in Asia and Europe who are severely impacted by this.

We have people online virtually 24x7 that are capable of investigating and
addressing issues with the webkit.org infrastructure. I'm one such person.
This particular case is an unfortunate combination of events: a configuration
error on a subset of the new hardware that webkit.org was recently migrated
to has unintentionally limited the number of people that can access the host
that is currently experiencing problems, and the person that such issues are
escalated to is currently on vacation. It's an unfortunate combination, but
also one that is unlikely to repeat.

One thing we should look in to is improving the process for reporting issues
with webkit.org infrastructure. webkit-dev isn't an ideal way to report
issues that our monitoring system hasn't noticed as there's no separation
between the regular discussion and more urgent issues, so the emails can be
 overlooked.

I am back from vacation and just wanted to let everyone know that I am sorry
that so many things went wrong and combined to create significant downtime.
Like Mark said, we do have systems in place for monitoring, and we usually
catch and fix things quickly, even at 3am. The new hardware is a big change
for us, and our monitoring system is also changing to accommodate the new
environment, so I will be spending time this week getting to the bottom of the
database issue and making sure we're covering everything we need to with our
monitoring systems.

As for a better notification system, we can create a webkit-sysadmin list that
contains the people with shell access and send admin@webkit mail there.
Currently, I'm the only recipient of admin@webkit mail, so we should fix that
single point of failure. Does that seem reasonable to everyone?

Thanks,
-Bill

I can't seem to find an option or even an easy hack to get the full author name

Re: [webkit-dev] Is bugzilla down ?

2012-07-19 Thread William Siegrist
Yeah a maintenance page would be nice, but usually these outages aren't so
long. I did have a 503 on the old server for the first DB move. The need to
re-do the DB migration made this a lot messier then it should have been since
it happened after the DNS change. I like to be paranoid and leave httpd off
entirely while we're transferring data, which makes a maintenance page hard to
put up.

Anyway, bugzilla is back.

Sorry for blowing way past the time estimate, but it turns out our test DB
migrations, and our first real migration, were not loading all of the data due
to some improperly encoded values, which made them take way less time. In case

Re: [webkit-dev] build.webkit.org down?

2012-06-21 Thread William Siegrist
The server does not run the unittests, but it does normally run `buildbot
checkconfig`. However, we had to temporarily bypass the checkconfig test during
restart due to a bug in Buildbot:

http://trac.buildbot.net/ticket/2279

The best thing to do when working on the buildbot config is to have buildbot
installed on your local machine so you can test the config before committing.
That avoids the confusion of the reconfig not happening and people thinking the
automatic reconfig is just broken.

[webkit-dev] Hardware Upgrade Update

people both near and far having both fast and slow downloads, and the problem
has been reported against more than 1 service and more than 1 piece of

I'm seeing many fewer clients connected to git and svn. I'm hoping that means
the bandwidth problem went away and the backlog has cleared? Is anyone still
having problems with a slow connection?

Re: [webkit-dev] Git/SVN is slow

2012-03-16 Thread William Siegrist
No, as far as I can tell the servers are operating normally. From home, I can
checkout webkit in 30 minutes, which is of course very close to the servers,
but not much closer than Mountain View. My home trace does not seem to go
through Level 3, so maybe its a 3rd party network issue. I've tried to tweak
the servers to compensate but nothing has made a difference so far.

Does anyone get decent download speed from svn besides me?

 G ood morning WebKit crowd,

since at least some weeks, updating git.webkit.org and/or
svn.webkit.org is extremely slow for me.
I have a git fetch rate below 3KiB/s average - surfing the web and/or
downloading anything else is acceptable with my 10MBit connection.
I'm located near Cologne, in Germany -- do any other european
WebKittens suffer from the same problems?

It has always been pretty slow for me too (Ireland), occasionally as bad as
you describe but more often in the 80-100KiB/s average. Thanks for sharing
 the chromium mirror tip.

Our network provider is looking into our bandwidth problems. It looks like this
may affect more than just git or svn.

My first idea was that I gives you ssh or something else access to the
svn mirror and the following post-commit hook will do the synchronization:
 /usr/local/bin/svnsync synchronize --username svnsync
 svn+ssh://svnsync@remote/home/svnsync/svn

But your suggestion is reasonable and more safe than mine, when
 svn.webkit.org does
a specific HTTP request and then our svn mirror will start the
 synchronization.

Let's talk about it in private mail after we finished setting up the server.

PS. So could you unban our subnet in the near future, please?

 Thanks for your patience!

For anyone following along at home, upgrading to Buildbot v0.8.5 alone
actually made build.webkit.org substantially slower. After profiling it for
a while we noticed that it was spending an exceptionally long time
performing queries against its SQLite database. Some analysis on the queries
that were being run showed that the database lacked appropriate indices for
the queries, causing full table scans across rather large tables. Ouch. A
few CREATE INDEX … statements later and now build.webkit.org is responding
much more quickly than it has been in quite some time.

If anyone notices any bad behavior that they suspect may be related to this
 upgrade, please let us know.

 svn.webkit.org (and trac) appears to be very unhappy at the moment;
seems like this is likely related?

It may be that svn.webkit.org is unhappy about the thundering herd of
reconnecting build slaves after the downtime. We'll look in to it.

I'm rebooting it again. I'm not sure if this is the same cause as the overnight
problems or the slaves getting new checkouts.

The server was overloaded and had to be rebooted. It is up now. It may not
handle all of the slaves doing a svn checkout at the same time, but I'll keep

From a backend hardware standpoint, I think using svn.webkit.org will give you
better results than git.webkit.org on average. Plus I'd have to make sure the
git syncing completed before sending the build event to the master, so it
complicates the svn hooks which potentially slows down or prevents commits
when something is wrong with git.webkit.org.

it seems something happened with svn.webkit.org, because many bots fail with

Have you got any idea what happened with svn.webkit.org? If it is stabilized,
I can do a trick on the Qt bots. I'll stopp them, copy an up-to-date svn
 working
copy to theirs storage and then restart.

I think we should find an automatic and better way in
the future to avoid similar problems. For example:
 - hack buildbot source not to do rm -rf
 - migrate buildslaves to git.webkit.org somehow
(It needs many hack to save svn revision number on the bots)

[webkit-dev] Server Maintenance Imminent

2011-10-20 Thread William Siegrist
Sorry for the short notice, we need to perform critical maintenance on one of
the servers. The maintenance is on one of the filesystems and could take a
while (hours) and affect all services below, so be prepared. There is a chance
that it will only affect build.webkit.org and not take that long. I'll be
starting in the next 20 minutes.
