Re: [webkit-dev] build.webkit.org down
build.webkit.org is back up. I reduced the retention of build archives from 2 weeks to 1 week to regain enough space to get the master running again. I'm still waiting on space calculations to figure out what ate up all of the space (the server uses 9TB of space currently after deleting 1TB of archives). We had over 2TB free last I checked manually, but our server monitor had a typo in its config that made the build.webkit.org's space usage report 5x lower than it actually was, so I did not get any alarms until it was too late. The server might be slow for a while due to the extra CPU and IO load of my space calculations. -Bill On Jan 23, 2013, at 7:57 AM, William Siegrist wsiegr...@apple.com wrote: build.webkit.org went down over night due to running out of disk space. This is caused by a problem on a host that I don't have sufficient privileges on to be able to address the issue myself. I've pinged people that should be able to resolve the issue, but given that it's currently 3am in California it may be a few hours before they're awake and fixing it. Thank you. Is there any way an on-call or monitoring system could be set up? While it fortunately occurs much less frequently nowadays than it did earlier in the year, it --please excuse my directness-- is unacceptable for a project the size of WebKit to have critical infrastructure unavailable like this for several hours. Even though it's 3am in California, there are many contributors in Asia and Europe who are severely impacted by this. We have people online virtually 24x7 that are capable of investigating and addressing issues with the webkit.org infrastructure. I'm one such person. This particular case is an unfortunate combination of events: a configuration error on a subset of the new hardware that webkit.org was recently migrated to has unintentionally limited the number of people that can access the host that is currently experiencing problems, and the person that such issues are escalated to is currently on vacation. It's an unfortunate combination, but also one that is unlikely to repeat. One thing we should look in to is improving the process for reporting issues with webkit.org infrastructure. webkit-dev isn't an ideal way to report issues that our monitoring system hasn't noticed as there's no separation between the regular discussion and more urgent issues, so the emails can be overlooked. I am back from vacation and just wanted to let everyone know that I am sorry that so many things went wrong and combined to create significant downtime. Like Mark said, we do have systems in place for monitoring, and we usually catch and fix things quickly, even at 3am. The new hardware is a big change for us, and our monitoring system is also changing to accommodate the new environment, so I will be spending time this week getting to the bottom of the database issue and making sure we're covering everything we need to with our monitoring systems. As for a better notification system, we can create a webkit-sysadmin list that contains the people with shell access and send admin@webkit mail there. Currently, I'm the only recipient of admin@webkit mail, so we should fix that single point of failure. Does that seem reasonable to everyone? Yeah a maintenance page would be nice, but usually these outages aren't so long. I did have a 503 on the old server for the first DB move. The need to re-do the DB migration made this a lot messier then it should have been since it happened after the DNS change. Re: [webkit-dev] build.webkit.org down?
The server does not run the unittests, but it does normally run `buildbot checkconfig`. However, we had to temporarily bypass the checkconfig test during restart due to a bug in Buildbot: http://trac.buildbot.net/ticket/2279 The best thing to do when working on the buildbot config is to have buildbot installed on your local machine so you can test the config before committing. That avoids the confusion of the reconfig not happening and people thinking the automatic reconfig is just broken. -Bill On Jun 21, 2012, at 12:28 PM, Osztrogonac Csaba o...@inf.u-szeged.hu wrote: Hi, In this case we could have avoided the breakage with running this unittest. [webkit-dev] Hardware Upgrade Update
As I have mentioned before on webkit-dev and bugs.webkit.org, we have acquired better hardware and are transferring all of webkit.org to it. This morning, I just wanted to let everyone know that we are now in the process of transferring data onto the new hardware. What this means is extra load on the old hardware for a while, so you may notice decreased performance, especially with lists.webkit.org and build.webkit.org. Re: [webkit-dev] svn.webkit.org problems
The server was overloaded and had to be rebooted. It is up now. It may not handle all of the slaves doing a svn checkout at the same time, but I'll keep an eye on it. Making the slaves not throw away their working copies when this happens would make my job easier. From a backend hardware standpoint, I think using svn.webkit.org will give you better results than git.webkit.org on average. Plus I'd have to make sure the git syncing completed before sending the build event to the master, so it complicates the svn hooks which potentially slows down or prevents commits when something is wrong with git.webkit.org. -Bill On Dec 21, 2011, at 8:43 AM, Osztrogonac Csaba wrote: Hi, it seems something happened with svn.webkit.org, because many bots fail with svn error again and again. If it is stabilized, I can do a trick on the Qt bots. I'll stopp them, copy an up-to-date svn working copy to theirs storage and then restart. I think we should find an automatic and better way in the future to avoid similar problems. For example: - hack buildbot source not to do rm -rf - migrate buildslaves to git.webkit.org somehow (It needs many hack to save svn revision number on the bots) br, Ossy ___ webkit-dev mailing list webkit-dev@lists.webkit.org http://lists.webkit.org/mailman/listinfo.cgi/webkit-dev
