[weewx-user] Weather station suggestion.

2021-11-29 Thread James Muirhead
I need a suggestion for a new weather station as the transmitter died on
mine (Carl Ohlson WH-1080).

   - Reasonably wallet friendly, please (Cyber Monday discount a bonus)!
   - Available for purchase in UK, but can be imported from China /
   wherever!
   - Rain / Humidity / wind speed & direction.
   - Solar recharging a bonus.
   - Compatible with WeeWX.
   - Having a base station with display and USB interface preffered, but
   not essential.
   - Would prefer not to have to mess with SDR.

I've checked a lot of places (Amazon, AliExpress, eBay, etc) but not found
anything that definately works.

e.g. WS1040 - https://tinyurl.com/yybs2qrr

Does everything which works with Smart Weather on Windows work with WeeWX?
Cannot seem to find an answer to this anywhere!

Thanks in advanece for all the support.

Re: [weewx-user] WH1080 sender / receiver appears to have died, suggestions?

2020-08-23 Thread James Muirhead
I tried to resync it at 1am, no joy. However I did notice that the sender
LED doesn't go off. It just stays on and flickers.

I took apart the sender (FYI it's glued shut) and gave it a good clean
(with IPA and a toothbrush).

Oh, and I dug out my SDR gear and checked if it was actually broadcasting
anything on 838MHz. But no dice, that area of band is strangely dead right
now!

So I have a few theories...

1) Some IC on the sender is stuck in a boot loop for whatever reason.

2) There's an intermittent connection I haven't found.

3) Do we know what sender does if one of the other sensors isn't connected?
Does it just boot loop? Because if there's a dead sensor, it may just be
that.

I'll have to see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the help thus far...

PS - So looks like I shall be buying another weather station. Anyone got
any recommendations on one generally available in UK, that won't break bank
and works with WeeWX? Preferably without needing an SSD receiver (personal
preference).

PPS - In fairness, it did last over 10 years!

2020-08-21 Thread James Muirhead
I didn't change batteries in receiver as such. I've previously converted it
to Lipo and charges via USB connection to Pi. But I did disconnect and
reconnect said battery. And yes, on at least one occurance I did wait 2
minutes. Done about every combination.

Doesn't beep when press down button for for seconds.

Thanks.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: WH1080 sender / receiver appears to have died, suggestions?

2020-08-21 Thread James Muirhead
I lost my manual aeons ago, have downloaded. It's on it's 10th (ish) set of
batteries now!

I tried to press down arrow for 4 seconds, but has no effect (backlight
goes off, about it).

I tried to remove batteries for about 30 minutes yesterday (so I could give
whole thing a good clean). And they died at some point in middle of night
anyhow.

Manual also says it will attempt to reconnect every hour, and I've so far
left it for almost a whole day and still no connection.

Any other ideas?

Many thanks.

[weewx-user] WH1080 sender / receiver appears to have died, suggestions?

2020-08-20 Thread James Muirhead
My WH1080 sender / receiver appears to have died.

The battery low indicator had been on for some time and died about 0130
this morning.

I changed out the batteries in the sender today and it does not want to
communicate with the receiver now. LED in the sender comes on and receiver
appears normal.

I've reset receiver and sender in both orders and left for an hour, etc,
etc. WeeWX WebUI shows no signal (but I don't know how this is generated).

The communication icon on receiver comes up sporadically for a minute at
start and for quarter of a second once in a while.

I'm gonna take apart the sender tomorrow and give everything a good clean,
see if it helps.

Has anyone got a suggestion, other than "buy a new weather station"?

Thanks.

PS - WeeWX is working perfectly. But I have WeeWX installed on an Orange Pi
PC (1.3GHz Quad, 1GB RAM). Shout if you want anymore information.

Re: [weewx-user] FTP not working since last system update

2019-11-09 Thread James Muirhead
Thanks for that, the #FTP.last file had got horrifically corrupted. In fact
it thought the local copy was a directory!!!

It also brought to light that I made a typo in the script I use to stop
WeeWX, backup, update and reboot the Pi. Meant the data files doubled in
size every Sunday morning. Sorted now. Also has dramatically reduced the
size of the buffer.

[weewx-user] RAM disc for web server data

2019-07-24 Thread James Muirhead
In case this is useful to anyone...

As the web server data is written to the SD every 5 minutes, I felt it
would be appropriate to create a RAM disc for it. Should, in theory,
improve lifespan of the SD card.

Anyhow, I just created an entry in */etc/fstab* for the folder which is
just the weather data, in my case it's the root of the web server
*/var/www/html* but in your case (and default) may be
*/var/www/html/weather*.

The entry is...

*tmpfs /var/www/html tmpfs nodev,nosuid,size=20M 0 0*

I gave it 20MB of RAM even though the web server is currently using ~700KB,
but I have 1GB of RAM total to play with and will allow for potential
expansion. Plus, it's the only thing I have on this particular Pi (Orange
Pi PC running Armbian).

Just means, that on boot it can take up to 5 minutes for the web server to
be populated with files and will likely return a 403 error when you try to
look at it from a browser.

I also created a temporary splash page that just says "loading, please
wait." which is loaded by a cron entry on @reboot.

*cp /home/pi/temp-splash.html /var/www/html/index.html*

Hope this is useful to someone. Has been quite fun to instigate.

-James Muirhead.

TBH, I have a load of different SBCs running various different servers
around my house. So I tend to just upgrade whenever I get a new one, old
pies becoming a simpler variety of server...

   - Raspberry Pi rev 2 - MQTT, web, print & scanner server (going to be
   replaced soon),
   - Raspberry Pi rev 2 - X Link Kai,
   - Banana Pi M1 - TV server (4 DVB-T tuners & a hard drive),
   - Orange Pi PC - Open VPN,
   - Raspberry Pi B+ - DreamPi,
   - Raspberry Pi 2B - Octoprint,
   - Raspberry Pi 3B - Octoprint,
   - Raspberry Pi 3B+ - NextCloud (to be replaced with a Banana Pi M1),
   - Raspberry Pi 3B+ - RetroPie (Pi 4B won't fit in case :'( ),
   - Orange Pi Zero 256MB - WeeWX with a WH1080.
   - Raspberry Pi A - Kite Aerial Photography rig (will be upgraded),
   - Raspberry Pi A - Portable dev kit for use with Lapdock (will probably
   be upgraded),
   - Raspberry Pi A+ - FM transmitter server (for internet radio in shower),
   - Orange PI PC (coming soon) - ZNC server.
   - Etc,
   - Etc.

I would love a Pi4, just not yet as I can't get RetroPie working great yet!

I'm running the default skin on an Orange Pi Zero with 256MB of RAM. Does
have a quad 1.2GHz CPU though.

[weewx-user] FYI... Weewx working on an Orange Pi Zero.

2019-06-30 Thread James Muirhead
Just thought I'd let folks know. WeeWX works just fine on an Orange Pi Zero
(256MB RAM version) using the Armbian Stretch image. Weather station is a
Fine Offset WH1080 (purchased from Clas Ohlson) connected via USB.

System uses 86MB of RAM total. I've got lighttpd installed as my local web
server. Also uploading to WOW, Wunderground & FTP.

Decided to use this because they're little and they have 2 ports (Ethernet
& USB), plus, they're about £10.

PS - Please, no comments on how I'm against Raspberry Pi, I have about 15
Raspberrys (no 4B yet), 2 Bananas & 2 Oranges! I'm an equal opportunity SBC
buyer! I buy based on what I need it to do and a reasonable budget for
that.
