TASK DESCRIPTIONWith the new image grid implementation, texts that are too wide for the image container are truncated (with an ellipsis). Previously, they would just wrap into multiple lines. This breaks, for instance, the “cocktails” query, since you can no longer read most of the cocktail recipes.

Assuming we don't want to enforce that limit, I'm thinking we could add some progress bar towards some ideal length & warn users once they're over, but still allow them to submit it.
 Kind of like how we warn when a user attempts to submit something without categories, but still allow them to submit it. Or maybe not even warn at all: progress bar might suffice to nudge people towards the desirable length.
 I don't think we need to display an exact "x characters remaining" count if we don't really enforce it.



As for support in different languages: assuming we have no other research, we could start out with Twitter's findings of nudging people towards  in most languages, and  in Chinese, Japanese & Korean?

I am definitely leaning towards encouraging, not enforcing. Before we can wipe the column, we need to decide what to do with this – we can either add another LabelConflictFinder implementation based on Cirrus/Elastic, or use term_text instead of term_search_key in conflict detection (and accept that “foo” and “foO” will no longer be detected as a conflict).

Some more information – using term_text doesn’t only mean case sensitivity in the search, it also means that «thé» and «thé» will be considered different (one uses a precomposed character, one a combining diacritic), or “foo” and “‎foo” (the second one starts with an LTR mark), or “foo” and “foo ”. The term_search_key normalization takes care of all that for us (Unicode normalization, removal of control characters, stripping of leading and trailing whitespace, and finally case conversion).

@Lydia_Pintscher any opinion on this? Yup. Wikidata descriptions show up in search results, nearby and watchlist on Russian and English but not under the title. You cannot enable this via beta. On all other projects they show up in all places. First, Caption should look just like Description (language dropdown field and text box for caption). Wireframe: F14642908: Screenshot 2018-03-07 09.53.54.png
Second, should Caption be required, not optional -- @Ramsey-WMF? I'd like to see it be required.

I am not sure how to proceed with determining character count. Who can we reach out to?

Currently, term_search_key is still used for TermSqlIndex’ implementation of the LabelConflictFinder interface – to find entities with the same label and description (you’re not allowed to produce such conflicts when editing or creating entities). Before we can wipe the column, we need to decide what to do with this – we can either add another LabelConflictFinder implementation based on Cirrus/Elastic, or use term_text instead of  term_search_key in conflict detection  (and accept that “foo” and “foO” will no longer be detected as a conflict).

After that:


write empty values if search uses Cirrus/Elastic
add maintenance script to wipe the columns (in batches, etc.) – not yet sure if this should be part of update.php
add maintenance script to re-populate the columns and note in docs/options.wiki that admins who disable Cirrus/Elastic again must make sure to run this script

This is not an easy change as it needs to be done directly on the master, or otherwise ids will not match.
The table is pretty small (23M on disk - 16224 rows) so it can probably be done directly on the master. I would still prefer to go for the approach we took for other similar changes like: change_tag, tag_summary and watchlist tables which is:


Do the alter on codfw
Wait for the DC failover
Reimport the tables on eqiad.


I prefer that approach because:

-It is not an urgent request and failover might be happening on Q4, so not far away from now.


I prefer avoid doing such changes (adding auto_inc columns) directly on the master and getting it replicated thru all the replication chain if there is an alternative way.

TASK DESCRIPTIONWe would like to add a numeric primary key to the wbqc_constraints table (replacing the current string as the primary key). As far as we’re concerned, this can be done at any time and isn’t urgent.

TASK DESCRIPTIONWhen analyzing the difference between a SPARQL query using "wdt" and one using "p" user @Larske noticed strange duplicate datasets in the "p" result:

When analyzing it further, he was able to narrow the problem down to the geoPrecision value in the coordinate node: It seems some coordinate nodes have multiple values (0 and some other value) for wikibase:geoPrecision:
