Thank you Suyash, and I hope you and everyone that has been following the
announcements enjoyed the show as much as we did when receiving and
reviewing the images.

Our congratulations go out to Mona Hassan Abo-Abda, who won first prize in
Wiki Loves Monuments 2023 with a stunning photograph
<https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e7/Giza_Pyramids_during_%22Forever_is_Now%22_exhibition.jpg>
from the 'Forever is now' exhibition with in the background the Giza
pyramids in Egypt, and to all the other winners and honourable mentions.
Our thanks go out to the international jury, the national teams (46 this
year!) and all other volunteers and staff who, in so many different ways,
all join in organizing Wiki Loves Monuments every year.

All international winners can be found in the 2023 winners gallery on our

Thanks Aafi!
I was not sure how limited this right was, so thanks for confirming this.
This means that only CN admins (52 accounts now have this right, but there
are a lot of double names in this list
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ListUsers/centralnoticeadmin>) and
Stewards (27 people at the moment) can do this. One of the suggested
improvements in the exchange on Phabricator now is to indeed add the right
to publish the translations of CN banners to the rights of translation
admins.

(Mind you: there was also a very persistent bug
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T308614> that was solved around
June/July this year, that indeed prevented users to mark the translations
as patrolled. That bug is solved now, and this feature request actually
evolved out of that specific bug report.)

[Wikimedia-l] Why do translations of the Central Notice banners take time to go live?

2023-08-21 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
Hi everyone,

I am one of the Central Notice banner admins that create our banners on the
Wikimedia projects that inform you about for instance the Wikimedia Sound
logo contest, Wikimania or at the moment the consultation round for the
Movement Charter drafts.
As you may not be aware, for these kinds of global banners where we ask for
community members to help with the availability of languages (the "[Help
with translations!]" text at the bottom), all incoming translated messages
need to be manually set to live by a Steward, CN admin, or Meta translation
admin - and we don't have too many of these.

>From my own experience, this can be a long and intensive process because I
don't speak all of our languages and Google and Yandex don't know several
of them either.
With 60-80 translations per global banner, it is a lot of work to check
sentence by sentence if the proposed text (and also the corrections that
may come in at a later moment) makes sense. To make this process easier and
more equitable for both sides (CN admins/stewards and community members) I
created this feature request on Phabricator
, to hopefully put more power to
the community in this process.

If you have additional thoughts on this, please add them to the request on
Phabricator.

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 award ceremony announcement

2023-04-14 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
Hi everyone,

I am excited to share with you that next Tuesday April 18, the winners of
Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 will be announced.
Wiki Loves Monuments is a federated photo competition around built
heritage, which is held annually since 2010.

As always, we'll be hosting our award ceremony through our social media
channels on Twitter and Instagram
, where we will have a
countdown from the number 25 to number 1.
We have scheduled two countdown windows: we will announce the honorary
mentions on Monday April 17, starting at 6pm UTC with number 25 and
counting down to number 16 at 10.30pm, announcing one image per 30 minutes.
We'll have a little break after that and will return with the number 15 at
7am on Tuesday April 18 and again announcing one winner per half hour, to
finish with the celebration of the international winner of Wiki Loves
Monuments 2022 at 2pm UTC.

Please keep an eye out for our posts, and join us in admiring these
beautiful images of built heritage around the world, and congratulating the
winners.
A gallery with all the winning photos will be published on our own blog
and on the WMF Diff site afterwards.

Our thanks go to the national organisers, the national juries and, of
course, the 2022 WLM international jury, without whom none of this would
have been possible.

On behalf of the Wiki Loves Monuments international organising team,

Best,
Ciell

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Is GoogleTV violating Wikipedia's license?

2022-08-30 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
We had a similar problem with the Dutch KPN interactive tv six years ago,
and as members of the Dutch WP community contacted the tv provider KPN, who
referred us to Metrological for the issue.
Metrological has been very responsive and with the next update of the tv
app the copyright claim was replaced by a cc-by-sa notice for all three tv
providers (KPN, Telfort and XS4All) they served.
As I mentioned, this was in 2016, and I have no idea how the situation is
nowadays, but back then just sending an email and reaching out about the
wrong copyright claim worked for us.

Best,
Ciell

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Join the new Movement Strategy Forum community review

2022-06-12 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
Hi,

First: I am a big fan of having 'one front door' for people that are trying
to find answers to questions they do not know where to ask (last year's
movement communications insights on this
).
I think a forum, actively moderated by people helping and pointing users to
the right places, would be a huge improvement for community questions and
input. Especially the one-click translation service is imho a big plus in
service in comparison to Meta.

It does however worry me that when I joined the forum last weekend to take
a peek, I stumbled on a thread with a very specific question about Commons
and giving permission via VRT. The thread had multiple replies, but no one
had a real substantial answer. Well, replies were along the lines of 'No,
there is no template for this' and 'This should be discussed on Commons'.
While the answers were somewhat correct, they were obviously not helpful
for the person asking this specific question and, as far as I could tell,
none of the respondents were a member of our VRT teams. So this user was
effectively not helped by posting the question on the forum.
Even more so, because the question on the forum was not noticed by VRT
agents (most of us working on the permissions queues and Commons will have
the /Noticeboard on Commons on our watch list and can be pinged if country
or language specific knowledge or advise is needed for a question), and
secondly it will be more difficult for the people working from our end that
will have to follow up if the person does decide to bring the question to
Commons or VRT after all.

Besides that, with my MCDC hat on, I hope after this trial period we'll get
to see the data on how many people interacted about the Movement Strategy
that we have not heard from in the previous 5 years through any of the
other platforms that are in use to gather feedback. Already trying to watch
several channels with Strategy discussions, I count on the MSG team to
bring back these numbers and a summary of what is being discussed on the
forum back to Meta. Even in a virtual world there is a limit on how many
channels a Wikimedian can watch.

*NB: I see Sj's response crossed mine while I was writing, but let my
example underline the issue of 'no unified notifications' and a possible
problem with 'coherent archiving'. *

*Please also be aware G-translate does not know all languages we have
projects in, some of which are however supported by Yandex that is an
option to choose for the Wikipedia article translation tool already. *

Best,
Ciell

2022-05-25 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
Thank you for organizing this Mehrdad!

A sound logo may be one of the solutions to the need to know where
information comes from: we should *not* be invisible (or 'inaudible'?) now
that our information is not only read but also heard through sound devices.

The issue of (in)visibility was also recently addressed in the interesting
conversation between Guillaume, Nicole and Nikkie
 in the first WikiMove video-podcast.

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Collection / Special:Book usage

2022-05-02 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
Hi,

Realising I am late to this exchange, but I just wanted to share that I
used this tool 2 years ago: I (as a volunteer of WMNL) printed the
Wikipedia article about the Dutch city of Hengelo through PediaPress, to
celebrate the anniversary of collaboration with the library in the town.
They had been organising monthly Wiki-gatherings for 5 years and did a lot
of work on describing their districts' local heritage: this was how we
thanked them for their work.

The book itself was not fabulous (because there were very few corrections I
could make to the not-so-perfect visual presentation), but what is a
greater gift to a GLAM, or an individual volunteer, than to see the outcome
of their years-long work in print?

Just an idea on how this can (also) be used again in the future, if there
is a way to fix or re-design the extension.

Best,
Ciell

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Foundation org chart

2021-07-10 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
Bill/Will mentioned this might be a new organisational chart
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organizational_chart>of the Wikimedia
Foundation. Of course, visuals differ depending on what you are trying to
visualize.

This one
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Wikimedia_structure_and_government_-_Community_Content_Moderation_and_the_DSA.pdf=6>
for instance would be more along the lines of what you, Dgg, are
mentioning: how the different parties are involved in our projects. This one
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Wikimedia_structure_and_government_-_Community_Content_Moderation_and_the_DSA.pdf=12>
would be more about how content on the projects is governed, and the
different layers in responsibilities we have. This one
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Educatie_Universiteit_van_Amsterdam_14_november_2017.pdf=31>
is more about how content is added to projects (example in this case:
Wikimedia Commons): this is
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Wikimedia_structure_and_government_-_Community_Content_Moderation_and_the_DSA.pdf=7>
a visualisation on the parties that re-use our content outside of the
projects.

It would probably be impractical (or impossible even?) to put *everything*
in* one* visual without the purpose of the illustration becoming too broad,
and the chart or visual therefore surpassing its purpose (visual support
for a concept).

Vriendelijke groet,
Ciell

Thank you Bill, I always find organisation charts very much enlightening,
and have been missing something like it for the WMF for some time now.

I think all the departments of the WMF-side are equal, right? For instance,
legal has no higher 'status' then fundraising or research: employees are
equals, just with a different function in the organisation. Therefore all
the different departments should be presented in a horizontal line, not a
vertical one, like in this one
 for
example.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Final report on the Techstorm 2019

2021-02-09 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
Thank you very much for your thoughts and suggestions Lea! I'll be sure to
pass them on to the rest of the team.

Personally, I think the strength of the Techstorm is its very personal
approach: this is where the Techstorm actually differs from a 'normal'
hackathon. I am afraid this will not work in an online environment and
would rather wait an extra few months to be able to organize it again as a
physical event.
I think the one thing we all are learning from COVID is to practise
patience: for some things there simply is no good online substitute.

But I am not the only person on the team, and this surely needs to be
discussed in a broader way.
WMNL is having an online Wiki Saturday this Saturday for all interested
volunteers about the activities in the annual plan, and this surely will be
a talking point.

Ciell

[Wikimedia-l] Final report on the Techstorm 2019

2021-02-08 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
Hi all,

It gives me great pleasure to (finally) share with you the evaluation
report of the *Techstorm* 2019*. Though the Techstorm was organized in
November 2019, other priorities came to play for the organisational team
due to the global pandemic, but over the past festive season and after, we
finally found the time to finish up our evaluation report.

Please go to the pdf-file on Commons

to read more about the vision behind the Techstorm, the goals of the event,
our metrics and, last but not least, our lessons learned.

A new Techstorm 2021 is in the Dutch chapters' annual plan, but if Covid
regulations will not permit these gatherings we will ask WMNL to include a
Techstorm in the annual plan 2022.

Keep techstorming every one!

Vriendelijke groet,
Ciell

* *Techstorming* is like brainstorming in a technical environment. The Wiki
Techstorm 2019 was held in
Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on the *22nd & 23rd of November 2019*.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Universal Code of Conduct Drafting Committee - Call for participation

2020-07-31 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
Yaroslav did, and again the Framwiki case was mentioned. And while I do
realise this bruised and scarred the relationship between the English
community and the WMF, please realise the UCoC could benefit a lot of other
communities. Those who are not vocal on this list, and are just the silent
readers. Those who maybe do not even know this list exists, or do not read
because of English not being their first language. Those who have been
struggling to keep their wiki on track maybe, and do not have the time or
knowledge to design and agree on behavioural ground rules. Or in countries
where the volunteer work we do even might be dangerous, so they just try to
stick to writing. The UCoC could benefit the whole movement, so please keep
a global perspective on this.

And yes: I do agree we as volunteers deserve to give our input, and we
deserve to be heard. But I do think we will get our chance. For now, it
will be up to the writers to start a draft. Give them time to set this up
properly.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Operation and oversight of OTRS system

2020-07-09 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
I agree with Tomek here.

And let me emphasize that not all OTRS admins have access to all queues: in
fact, I think only the admins do. OTRS is a very fast system with queues
per project and again per language, and access is given per queue. A queue
is mostly created per Wikimedia project and language, except for the
subject-related queue like WLX which is just for the competitions, and
maybe chapters and WMF. Most of us only have access to a few queues, if
more then one.
But this access comes with knowledge, so if you are concerned about a
person's knowledge on the subject of the emails they are handling, just
reach out to one of the OTRS admins and express your concerns.

Hi Pine,

1) For me, as non-native speaker, it really helps to see someone speak
while I am hearing them. I applaud Maggie for doing this on screen. There

as she pointed out) and it's been 11 months, it is not strange that she
cannot recall all the details. I think her answer would have been more
specific when she would have had the time to research the question.
And with the new UCoC, an Ombudsman/audit would also be introduced for the
T cases. Imho this would be a good way to learn and develop from. For
staff, and for all Wikimedia users involved.

I am really interested in the "outside review for English administrators
and functionaries". Could you please share with me (on or off list) a link
to how that is formed, implemented and carried out?

[Wikimedia-l] How the Dutch language WP handles COVID-19 (just some inspiration for other small communities)

2020-03-19 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
Hi!

I read about the beautiful COVID-19 Wikiproject here on wikimedia-l, and
through Twitter, about the Italian, German en English Wikipedia giving the
relevant articles on COVID-19 their own box on the front page, to inform
readers looking for information.

We discussed this

on the Dutch language Wikipedia and concluded that our community is to
small and not knowledgable enough, to act as health information portal. We
have governmental institutes in place where people are being directed if
they want to know what to do and what not. These websites will always be
more up to date, and also there is no (large-scaled) mistrust in the
measures that are now being taken.

Therefore, the community decided to take a different approach: through our
featured article section on the main page
, we now highlight articles to
put the COVID-19 in a broader perspective.
Today's FA is on Alexander Fleming (Nobel prize winner for his discovery of
penicillin), the upcoming days for instance will be about the Spanish flu
(the influenza epidemic that hit Europe just after WW1) and about
Decamerone (for some reading inspiration).

Maybe a thought for other small communities, that wrestle with the same
topic.

Ciell

Hi Gnangarra,

With the Corona virus spreading rapidly around the world: can you tell me
(us) something about the scenario for Wikimania when the virus would still
be heavily active in August?
People might want to wait a bit longer before applying, or maybe want to
know more about cancelling their travels after they have confirmed the
scholarship. Will this be possible?

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Techstorm 2019: live on YouTube

2019-11-20 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
Hi everyone,

Last year the gender gap working group of Wikimedia Netherlands organized
the Women Tech Storm (May 2018) and the first Wiki Techstorm (October
2018). The Techstorm is a very diverse conference, open and inviting to
everyone. Our main aim is increasing diversity within the broader Wikimedia
movement, as well as decreasing the gender gap by emphasising on the
participation of women and non-binairy people to the event.
The Techstorm offers workshops and guidance for people with beginning or
intermediate experience in coding and/or Wikimedia skills, and has a high
mentor-student ratio.

This Friday and Saturday the 22nd and 23rd of November, we come together in
Amsterdam for the Wiki Techstorm 2019. For this years event, we approached
our cultural partners, and have added an extra layer. By working together
with our friends from GLAM institutions all over the Netherlands, we have
collected media and data that will be shared through Wikimedia Commons and
Wikidata this upcoming weekend. This means our participants get hands on
experience on how to process specific tasks, and the institutions get a
better idea of what can be done with their input (collections), what they
can ask of us, and how to get the best results. There will be 11 workshops,
on various fields of developments within Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.
We also invited a few of our expert developers from the Netherlands, to
help us develop and renew apps and tools.

Curious about the event? Or would you like to know the basics of Wikidata
or Commons, al the newest on structured data, how to create a map using
Wikidata, or how to scrape a website?
Please join us through our live streams on the Wikimedia Nederland YouTube
channel. Go to our live stream overview
 on Mediawiki
for the link per session.

More information about this years event can be found on Mediawiki
, an extensive report about our
2018 activities

is also available.

Vriendelijke groet,
Ciell

2019-06-18 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
Hi Lodewijk,

You say:

*"My main takeaway from this discussion would be that it's good if there is
a neutral review option for actions by the T team (or the WMF in
general), such as an ombudsperson."*

I think this is a very good idea, last Saturday we talked about an internal
audit for this, same idea I think.
I know of several instances where the T team had to act/ was asked to
act, and reviewing procedures from time to time should be a normal in a
healthy organisation.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] New board for Wikimedia Belgium + evaluation behaviour WMF

2019-06-17 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
Hello Caroline,

I'm very sorry for what happened back in Capetown and that today you are
reminded of this again through a public mailing list, where the story is
starting to lead it's own life. I can only imagine that you felt the need
to correct this misinterpretation of what happened to you.
I know Romaine for several years and recognise the behaviour you are
describing and even though I know he doesn't mean any harm with it (it's
his enthusiasm that gets the better of him), I do realise it may cause
distress with the other person. If you want to talk to me about this,
please contact me of list. If this was enough for you, please do not feel
you have to send any additional responses.

Hi all,

I was present at the assembly last Saturday and the whole situation is very
complicated. I think, in his emotions to tell his story, Romaine indeed got
two situations mixed up here and the emotional part should not be discussed

Furthermore I know first hand that both the chair of WMNL and WMBE are
involved in the conversations with T and the WMF: there is no need for us
to re-review this process, that is still ongoing at the moment.

Please let's close this thread.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Cheat sheets visual editing on Wikipedia

2018-07-12 Thread Ciell Wikipedia
