If it relates to editing English Wikipedia, I can help monitor the
activities of the students online and provide help and support when they
need it. So that they don't end up with copyvios or vandalism.

It was a lot of fun along with serious business. The club started on the
14th with over 40+ attendees. The greatest success was that almost 100% of
all students returned the next day. Hence, we hope to have generated a lot
of interest as well as made it clear to them, that editing an encyclopedia
is serious business.

 Hello All

This is a slightly belated report of the Wiki 11 celebrations in Pune on
 January 15, 2012.

The celebrations were coincided with the first gathering of Wikipedia
 Club Pune http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Club_Pune.
The Club had met on the 14th where participants were instructed on the
model, nature and basics of Wikipedia.

The 15th saw 40+ participants gather in the computer lab at SICSR, Pune
for hands-on Wikipedia editing as well as the 11th anniversary
celebrations. The numbers therefore made this the *largest Wiki 11
celebration in India*. The participants were largely high school and
college students. The morning session involved a detailed explanation of
 the five pillars of
 Wikipediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Five_pillars stressing
the importance of contributing neutral and free content. Feedback for each
sessions was immediately gathered on the Wikipedia Club Pune Facebook
 Pagehttps://www.facebook.com/WikipediaClubPune
 .

The second session involved hands-on editing beginning with talk page
posting, signing of posts, sandbox editing, wiki-linking etc. Then
following a detailed explanation of referencing, the participants were
encouraged (under supervision) to reference articles related to Pune.

The final session involved the business end of the Wiki-11 celebration
 with a huge Wiki-globe
 cakehttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_Club_Pune_1.JPG.
We were further buoyed by the presence of the WP English SIG chair Ashwin
who encouraged and helped the participants in editing and did the honours
cutting the cake. The participants and the organizers participated in a
Google+ Hangout with Hisham and the rest of the WMF office in Delhi and
Nitika and the WP 11 party in Kolkata. The participants were quite excited
with both Wikipedia and its community. Their enthusiasm was reflected in
both their editing as well as willingness to return for the next meeting of
 the club.

The pictures of the event have been uploaded to commons and can be found
 here http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_11_in_India.
The next meeting of the Wikipedia Club Pune will be on Saturday, 21st Jan.

The Wikipedia Club and celebrations were quite excellently organized by
Abhishek Suryavanshi and several other Campus Ambassadors in Pune.

 Warm Regards

[Wikimediaindia-l] Outreach opportunities: Wikipedia workshops at tech fests

2012-01-19 Thread Nitika
Hey folks,

There are over 20 Tech fests that are being conducted by several institutes
across India over the next 2 months. I'm sure my list is not completely
exhaustive and I might have missed a few. I was wondering if any of you know
friends, family members, faculty members, students, administrators associated
with any of the following organisations who might be able to help us out in
participating or getting a slot for a Wiki stall or a workshop during these
tech fests?

These fests might prove to be a brilliant opportunity for us to do massive
outreach programs. I am assuming, to be on a conservative side, that each fest
has a footfall of minimum 1000 participants. Even if we are able to take part
in say 10 such events during the next 2 months, that means we have the

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki academy/event at Pragyaan 12 - NIT Trichy

Forward this to the list and the Chapter, we need a plan ASAP.

I spoke to Saagar today.
Here are the main issues:
Plan: We need a plan of action, and we need it fast.
I was asked if this was a contest or a workshop, to which I stated that it
was a Workshop.

Here are the key points we discussed:

1 Date/Day/Schedule: The event is spread over four days, and is jam
packed. We need to schedule it properly, and get a follow up mechanism in
place.
2 ISO certification: Pragyaan is the fourth Technical fest in India to get
ISO certification. Because of this, the organisers, have to sign an MoU
with the organiser/promoter of each individual event. I believe the chapter
needs to do something about this. The main purpose of this is to show that
the event is taking place and to promote it.
3 Swags: I was suggested that we have a small trivia session thru the
session and give out same Laptop stickers/tees/etc.
4 Accommodation: This is really tight. We need to inform the number of
participants beforehand to make sure that we can get accommodation.

I know Bala won't be able to make it. What about other Community members -
Chennai, Coimbatore, Salem, Bangalore, Kerala?

Do remember, this is NIT Trichy. A BIG event. I believe Tinu and Logic had
done something at NITT earlier. Hoping that they would do it this time as
well.

Hoping for a response soon.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki academy/event at Pragyaan 12 - NIT Trichy

On Thu, Jan 19, 2012 at 16:00, Nitika ntan...@wikimedia.org wrote:

I'll be more than happy to formulate a plan/proposal for this.

Pragyaan 12: http://www.pragyan.org/12/home/ is running through
23rd-26th Feb that means we have enough time to organise this well. Going
through the website I feel that they'll have different events running
simultaneously on all 4 days and don't not have provisions for stalls. But
please correct me if Im wrong.

They did have stalls last time I think, but don't know about this time,
gotta check with Srikanth.

 Here is what I propose:

 1. Organise at least 8 Wiki sessions during these 4 days. We can keep the
morning sessions in English and every evening we can conduct in Tamil.
Doing 2 sessions every day will mean that the participants can pick and
choose the date and time according to their own convenience. This might
lead to more people attending the session.

IMO, we don't need to do it for all the 4 days. 2 days with high
participation might be better than 4 days with moderate participation.
Again, this is my opinion.

 2. We should organise Editathons everyday where participants who have
already attended wiki sessions during the day can join in. It's important
for newbies to experience and practice editing before they fall in love
with Wikipedia and Editathons can provide them such a platform. :)

That's great! We can throw one morning for a Commons event probably? Just a
thought.

 3. I personally really like the idea of Trivia sessions. It keeps the
 participants enthusiastic and interested.
 4. How about using this tech fest as a platform to get interested people
 kick off a Wikipedia Club?
 5. How about inviting the participants to join in the Tamil Wiki Media
 Contest?

In fact the Tamil Wikimedia contest will be ending on the 28th if I'm not
wrong. Its a great platform to publicize it.

Participating in an event as big as this one will definitely need more
volunteers. Could I please request more people from Chennai, Coimbatore,
Bangalore, Kerala to raise hands if they'd like to volunteer on ground for
 this event.

 More ideas/suggestions are welcome.

 Thanks
 Nitika

Total footfall count was around 1L for the Techfest.
The response for Wikipedia stall was great !!

IITB's Techfest just got over. VJTI's (Mumbai) festival (Technovanza) is
from Feb 3rd to 5th (I can connect here- ping me offline). UDCT's festival

Feb, but this seems to be limited to biomed.

Most other major college tech fests in Mumbai will happen next semester
 (S P Jain, D J Sanghvi, etc).

 Hey folks,

There are over 20 Tech fests that are being conducted by several
institutes across India over the next 2 months. I'm sure my list is not
completely exhaustive and I might have missed a few. I was wondering if any
of you know friends, family members, faculty members, students,
administrators associated with any of the following organisations who might
be able to help us out in participating or getting a slot for a Wiki stall
or a workshop during these tech fests?

These fests might prove to be a brilliant opportunity for us to do
massive outreach programs. I am assuming, to be on a conservative side,
that each fest has a footfall of minimum 1000 participants. Even if we are
able to take part in say 10 such events during the next 2 months, that
means we have the opportunity to create awareness about Wikipedia amongst
 at least 10,000 more people.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Outreach opportunities: Wikipedia workshops at tech fests

2012-01-19 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
FWIW Some thoughts below.

1. Footfall measures dont mean much from our POV. If 1000 people attend a
college tech fest, at best 200 will walk near where our stall is put up,
50-100 might come and hear us, 10 might engage in discussion(mostly to
clarify doubts on their previous edit experiences), 1/0 might start editing
after the day. If you say all 1000 will come and listen to us on the stall,
Please attend one, you will know. If you still think college student mass
attend tech fests for learning from these programs that run on tech fest, I
cant help you, that's just a minority. (Any student on the list who can
speak form heart on why student mass attend these events without trying to
be politically correct?)

2. It is good to do a general outreach + academy for maximum 1-1.5 days,
but its good to get the facts straight, especially if there is a hint of
sponsoring / spending big time for these events since in all probability
this has to be equally treated with any other city outreach events (In
fact I would rate the latter better, since people attend those for
Wikipedia as sole reason, hence may most likely have more interest)

3. This crowd (mostly Engineering students who attend these tech fests) are
mostly aware about Wikipedia (Heck just go and look at college articles,
people come and spam about when events happen to get publicity), So its not
even like we are reaching unknown / outside online world folks who are
target in bookfairs(for ex) which are similar in many levels.

Regards,
Srikanth L

PS : Am mentioning the above facts with a notion that physical outreach in
general gives better returns, which I might not agree wholeheartedly.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Outreach opportunities: Wikipedia workshops at tech fests

2012-01-19 Thread Yuvi Panda
*Technical* outreach at these kind of places are also good - I did a 3
night workshop at IIT Madras' Tech Fest in October and the response
was great! (We got atleast one new contributor, so yay!).

It was very MediaWiki focused (rather than Wikipedia focused), which I
think was a mistake. Doing technical outreach that's Wikipedia focused
would be much better off in terms of returns.
