Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] An Innovative Outreach effort
Dear All, If you guys won't think I am repeating a similar incident like Deba and Sri, i had a similar experience too... After our WikiConference @ Mumbai, I traveled on Kingfisher flight back to my place (Chennai, I am from Chennai btw). I am usually a last minute guy.. so I went to the airport pretty early and i was given access to the Lounge. When I was looking through the pics taken during our conference, a middle aged biz man asked me if I attended the conference... I said yes.. and he told me tht he wanted to come.. but cudn make it cos of his work... I was not wearing wiki T shirt, but i pinned the Wikipedia badge given by Ashwin Baindur on to my t-shirt. he was very eager and asked if I can share what al happened I walked him thro th entire conference and he wanted to know what exactly we guys did... so i took the liberty of tellin our editing stuffs in a nut shell he took serious interest in the initiative...and as luck would have it. we were on th same flight... and had a few editing session inside th lounge.. i felt happy tht i was able 2 contribute 2 our cause.!! Thanks, Ade. On 10 March 2012 14:04, nischay nahata nischay...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, I have recently been involved with Wikimedia activities and would like to know who gets a Wikipedia T-shirt? Something similar happened to me and PlaneMad (Arun Ganesh) in Mumbai. I was wearing Pune T shirt and him Mumbai T Shirt, and the person serving us food from the canteen was having fun reading the word 'Wikipedia' in the languages he could read (Kannada and Hindi, I believe?) - he could not read the english. Arun spent a while explaining Wikipedia to him, a conversation I was not able to take part in because of my lack of Hindi knowledge (sigh). -- Yuvi Panda T http://yuvi.in/blog ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l

I won't say it was very fruitful, or that I showed them any live demo or ppt. Rather I focused on a few crucial question which were on their minds: If you DIDN'T show them a ppt, the chance that it WAS fruitful is a lot HIGHER :) If you spoke about so much things to these people, then most likely it was fruitful, because they will now at least understand Wikipedia better as readers, and maybe they will even try to edit. For a casual chat in a train, this is very good. If a lot of Indian take a lot of long train rides, then consider preparing something more structured and taking people's emails for follow-up. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] WikiWomen's History Month
Speaking in personal capacity, for me it was a delightful moment to edit Dance in India as INCOTM last month. That was a celebratory moment as far as women's participation goes. Although I do understand that this is something more symbolic about March, it was a nice thing to do in Feb and maybe continue every few months. Just a thought though. [Wikimediaindia-l] Chennai Unofficial Wikimedia Projects Hackathon on 17th March
Hello everyone! Me and SrikanthLogic are conducting a small Unofficial Wikimedia Projects hackathon in Chennai on 17th March. You can find more details and register for it here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Chennai_Hackathon_March_2012 Also, I'd request the community to add ideas here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Chennai_Hackathon_March_2012/Ideas. Note that this hackathon is *not* a purely MediaWiki hackathon, and the aim is to build hacks/tools/gadgets around the API/Content than mediawiki extensions itself (Extensions/Patches to MW are welcome too, but not the goal). So tools that make your life as an editor easier, tools that make content discovery in multiple languages easier, tools that help Wiki* spread, anything at all your mind can think of - please post on the Ideas page. Thanks! -- Yuvi Panda T http://yuvi.in/blog ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l

These are: * Wikipedia:WikiProject Hinduism - Redtigerxyz. * Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian Cinema - Vensatry. * Wikipedia WikiProject Mumbai - Karthikndr. * Introducing Newbies to WikiProject India initiative - Debastein (based on his Teahouse participation). We welcome them to their new responsibilities and they are now proud members of a select club indeed - people who have publicly volunteered to look after an area of responsibility on WikiProject India. Please welcome them on their talk pages and not on the list(s). They join Bpositive (INCOTM), Kondicherry (WikiProject Gujarat) ssriram_mt (Tag Assess 2012). Redtigerxyz has asked for fellow co-coordinators for WikiProject Hinduism, if any one is willing and forthcoming. We would like to intimate readers that we are constantly looking for editors to help with the various departments and task forces. There are more than seventy more areas needing looking after. And if the project you are interested in already has one, welcome to it - we need lots of dedicated voluntees per department or task force not just one. [Wikimediaindia-l] India Programs-Fortnightly IRC: Thursday March 15th @ 9pm IST (Indic Languages) Thursday March 29th @9pm IST (Outreach Communication) (#wikimedia-office)
Hi Folks One of the essential things that India Program needs to constantly work out is keeping the community informed of the work that we are doing - so that this work is clearer but also to help cross-pollinate ideas amongst a wider set of community members who might not have been engaged on specific village pump / talk page discussion or involved in particular activities (e.g. outreach events) or wikiprojects. We used to have a monthly IRC with the community and India Program. (For those who are not familiar with IRC, it is an Internet messaging system similar to a regular chat room. It's very simple to use and you can join in by clicking on the following link: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#wikimedia-office.) I have been remiss in conducting these for the past few months - and I'd like to make amends by restarting, with a couple of modifications. a) I'd like to propose fortnightly instead of monthly. (I was wary of doing it any more frequently than monthly earlier because I didn't know if there would be enough on the plate to discuss. I have changed my mind now - because there is too much to discuss to cover in a single monthly session.) I'd like to propose that we do it in the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month at 9pm IST (which is GMT + 0530) - THOUGH NOT THIS MONTH - BECAUSE I HAVE MISSED THE TIMELINE. Just for March, we will do it on March 15th and March 29th (both at 9pm IST which is GMT + 0530) b) I'd like to propose that we do it focussed on specific work streams instead of general. The reason I say this is that - as with many community meet-ups, folks will give time to attend a meet-up or participate in an IRC only if there is a topic of relevance to them. To that extent, we could do one IRC on Indic languages and one on Outreach Communications. I'd start both the IRCs with a re-cap of India Programs activities for the fortnight (or so) prior to the IRC and forward from the IRC - and then we could talk about either Indic langauges or Outreach Communications. The March 15th one will be focussed on Indic Languages and the one on March 29th will be on Outreach Communications. Having said that, there is quite a bit of overlap on these topics - so feel free to join both. The more the merrier! Please do also invite anyone who is interested to know more about India Program or - even more importantly - interact with fellow Wikimedians interested in a particular activity to join in. (It's quite a lot of of fun {citation required} - and i've heard a rumour {citation required} that there was actually a romance that started on one of the IRCs...) As always, the logs will be put up on meta for the benefit of those who can't attend and for the record. I'll send a reminder on the day of the session and one 30 minutes before the session. Thanks hisham ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l
