Dear friends,
Our colleague User:Khalid Mahmood, the most prolific contributor to the Western
Punjabi Wikipedia[1], has died earlier this month, after long illness.
Khalid was an educator from Pakistan who was passionate about creating and
sharing free knowledge. He had great plans for promoting the mission in
Pakistan. He has made more than 67 thousand edits across the projects. He
attended Wikimania 2012 and 2014, where some of us met him.
If you wish to leave condolences or share memories of Khalid, I suggest his
talk page on
Meta:https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Khalid_Mahmood#Condolences_and_remembrances

Yours,
   Asaf

practically the same language, but Western is written in the Perso-Arabic

Dear Dhaval,

Thanks so much for your question. Access to CIS email id, admin privileges on
our website content management system, subscription to staff newsletter, access
to staff calendar etc. are only revoked when a ex-partner, ex-staffer,
ex-intern and ex-volunteer makes a request or there is grave risk to our
objectives. I could give you a list of ex-CIS folk with contact details if you
would like to verify this. We have mostly assumed good faith since July 2008 :-)

When we articulate the same value in CIS's institutional ethos as trust

Muzammil and the team to find out whether it would be advisable for him to post
using this id to the Wikimedia mailing lists.

Dear Vyas,

  Good News Muzammil,

But I have seen questions raised for you regarding this
number. People have found out that till mid February there
were only around 27 thousand pages, how did Urdu wikipedia
reach 50,000 mark in 2 months?

I will have to examine the extent of bot activity. However, a
high level of bot activity was also seen on Hindi Wikipedia in
the past.

Someone also found that most of the recent activity is due to
Bot operation and 90% of pages are less than 20kb in size,
which means they are nearly substubs.

I would rate most as stubs. But even these can be forerunners
for good articles of the future.

Regards,

Muzammil

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia user group in Pakistan

2013-10-08 Thread Saqib Qayyum
Thank you all for your best wishes. I really appreciate such a good response
from the Indian community.
@Arjuna, we already have a mailing list for Pakistani Wikimedian community so I
think there's no necessity of IRC room as well.
@Rohini, I would like to see your valuable contributions to Wikivoyage.
@Sibi, I liked your idea, currently most of the Wikimedians interested in this
user group are actually based in Karachi so we will more focus on Karachi
especially.
@Tejaswini, we already have many Wikimedia projects (in local language such as
Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi and Pashto.

If you are doing anything about including local languages in Wikipedia I would
be very happy to share whatever plans are being made in India.

Very happy to hear :-) . Deep from my heart wishes for the initiative . The
areas which you have mentioned are quite broad . If you are more specific think
we can have a point by point discussion .requesting fellow wikipedians to come
forward in sharing their rich experience .

Dear Indian Wikimedians,

Although Wikimedia chapter for Pakistan is still in the discussion phase, we've
working on creating of an official Wikimedia User Group, since the numbers of
our community members at the moment are not sufficient for the creation of a
chapter.

The main objective of this user group will be to act as a voice and
representative for the Pakistani Wikimedian community and to promote Wikipedia
and various Pakistani language Wikimedia Foundation projects throughout
Pakistan and further strengthen the community.

The initial goals our user group will be:

Organise regular meetings and meetups in major cities of Pakistan for
discussions etc and planning of a Wikipedia workshop and Wikipedia Takes The
City photo contest in 2014

To empower and engage Pakistani Wikimedians in both on-wiki and off-wiki
activitiesGrowth of the Wikimedian community in Pakistan

Creation of Wikimedia Pakistan chapter in the long run
Some ideas and suggestions from Indian chapter members will be welcomed and
highly appreciated.
