Dear All,

I am 100% support with Tinu Cherian opinion. And as per my knowledge this
is first time where we meet. If truly any meet up organized in Kolkata that
is our great news. I am strange I have been quite actives in both Bengali
and English wikipedia about 3 year, I have never seen any wikipedia kolkata
meet up page.

Ok , number is not our main mission. Our mission is create a free online
encyclopedia.

 Hi Srinivas ( et all),
If the mail was intended to me alone ( as per
the salutation ), this below mail could have sent directly to me ( instead

 To clarify your comments.
There was no recorded history of any kolkata meetup, till
then. That is why I took the liberty of calling the meetup as 1 (
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Kolkata/Kolkata1 ) . I have
created the page announced it ( with link) on the India alias too, very
long back. Nobody have informed me/ Shiju or the other organizers ( 2 of
them from Kolkata only) about it when we created the Kolkata meetup page. I
trust you also didn't know about it till then. Having said that, this wasn't
intended to take away any credit of someone...

When we thought of a Chennai meetup this year, I remembered the wikicamp ,
Chennai in 2007 and created a page for this Chennai1
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Chennai/Chennai1(
just to record the historical data) and called the Nov 2010 meetup as
 Chennai2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Chennai/Chennai2 .
There may be even more meetups that actually happened between Chennai1
Chennai2. Bangalore 3rd meetup (held at my home and attended was by you also
) was called Meetup3 , as there were 2 pages for Bangalore and Bangalore2
already created. We are still not sure whether
 Blore2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Bangalore/Bangalore2had
actually taken place, but still we created the new meetup page as
 Bangalore3

If you still have objections on numberings, please move Kolkata1 to
Kolkata2 and create a page for Kolkata1. Please get in touch with your
friend to get more details on that meetup. That will help us all in knowing
 more about it.

Please understand these numberings are primarily for tracking purposes and
creation of pages.. What matters more is not the numbering or the naming,
but the efforts purpose behind organizing such meetups .

 Hope that explains it better.

Thanks for sharing - would definitely be appreciated if we had .SVG
formats to use. We're encountering this problem with some of the really
beautiful stuff people have uploaded on the Wikipedia 10 gallery on Commons
 - lots of great stuff, but it's all PNG, which means we can't print them off
 as big banners :(

So if anyone has the ability, would be great if you could also upload SVG
versions alongside PNGs. Even if we can't get it done in time, would be
great to have these as part of the historical record.

 thanks!

  Hi Praveen,
May I ask , what is not really clear about the chapter ? Wikimedia India
  chapter is registered now as a legal entity in India [1] in Jan 2010 ;
 there
is an Executive committee with 7 members , the office bearers are
 [2] Arun
Ramarathnam, President ; BalaSundaraRaman Lakshmanan, Secretary ; Arjuna
  Rao Chavala, Treasurer etc
May be it is time for the chapter to open up the membership to the
  community?
or even making the agenda meeting minutes of the Wikimedia India
 chapter
EC available to all like the Wikimedia Foundation Board [3] ( so that
 these
confusions to common Wikimedians can be avoided) ?
If there are still any misunderstandings/unclear things, the EC members
 must
  be happy to answer them.
I'm all excited to see the Wikimedia India chapter getting more active
 and
the chapter community working closely in the coming days.

all issue. Anyone can join our advocacy programme without edit wikimedia.
Nos of edit is not criteria. The chapter created as society so there must be

I have also added the office positions, per MoA , to

creating it -- I found it really useful. I don't spend a lot of time

 feel caught up :-)

Here's a small suggestion, which you should ignore if you like.
Personally, I'd love if the chapter would post photos of its Executive
Committee members on the site here:
 http://wikimedia.in/wiki/Executive_Committee_Members. I think I've
probably met half of the Executive Committee members over the years,
but it'd be easier for me to mentally keep faces attached to names if
there were images on the wiki.

Feel free to ignore that, if it'd be a hassle.

 Thanks,

In Bengali Wikipedia is not like ban, but we thoroughly watch/check the
quality of translated content. If translation quality is not standard
Bengali, we not accept. Most of the times we faced junk translation from
Google translator. If any one translate English Wikipedia content to Bengali
Wikipedia with proper Bengali content we would accept.

 * Does the surge of number of Indian language Wikipedia articles has

*Why should regular Wikipedians be motivated to contribute when Google
pays to do the same ?*

I didn't answer them due to the sensitivity of the issue. But I am now
curious on a statistical point of view.

I am not referring to the philosophical question on whether paid editing is
 good or bad.

But is there a way to find how many of the articles created in last year
were created by normal editors/bots and Google translators in each of the
Indian language Wikipedias? Somebody told me , the translators are supposed
to leave the translate URLs of Google in the edit summaries to get paid?

Which are the languages on which Google translations are happening ? I know
it happens on Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu, at least. Any other ? I
know it is banned to Bengali Malayalam.

society has been seeded by the Govt. of West Bengal (Dept. of Information

through Unicode and Baishakhi KB which is more similear as Inscript Bengali.

But my personal experience is not very good, when I go any govt office in

Governments to move to Unicode as the encoding standards? Is it the
tools they use? The workflow? A legacy issue - we'll never be able to
 open our old files?

I'm trying to map this space out - it's just that I am coming to see
it as being really really important and want to try and do something
 here.

Also, the GoI is slowly making some noises about standards and
openness etc. and I am hoping this are small points that can add up.
 For example, the TAGUP report:
 http://finmin.nic.in/reports/TAGUP_Report.pdf

 From the Executive Summary:

Chapter 6 points out some key design considerations for the solution
architecture. The solution architecture should be designed to be
flexible, reusable, extensible by stakeholders, and free of vendor
lock-in. Given that many Government projects touch end-users such as
citizens and firms, the Government should also play an active role in
promoting banking and accessibility for all. This can form the basis
of a platform for delivery of services.
Chapter 7 addresses openness in implementation of Government IT
projects. It describes the relevance of open standards, open data, and
open source. The Government should not only be a consumer, but also
strive to produce and facilitate open standards, open data, and open
source. It also suggests the creation of an open source foundation for
open sourcing software from Government projects.

 Give me a little hope.

 Best,

 Gautam

Dear sankarrukku Sir,

Hello sir how are you?

Regarding your comments *we can not upload the photograph of any old
Indian painting or sculpture to Wiki Commons*. I am just clarifying you
that can do that. You you have to prove that those images are *old Indian
painting or sculpture* by proper source and painter and *sculpture name.*

Just I want to mention that According to The Indian Copyright Act,
1957http://www.education.nic.in/CprAct.pdf(Chapter V Section 25),
Anonymous works, photographs, cinematographic works,
sound recordings, government works, and works of corporate authorship or of
international organizations enter the public domain 60 years after the date
on which they were first published, counted from the beginning of the
following calendar year (ie. as of 2011, works published prior to 1 January
1951 are considered public domain). Posthumous works (other than those
above) enter the public domain after 60 years from publication date. Any
other kind of work enters the public domain 60 years after the author's
death. Text of laws, judicial opinions, and other government reports are
free from copyright.

There are certain points which were raised in the discussion.

Wikipedia is paranoid about Copyright. Of course this is a result of the
U.S law and any number of cases. There was a time when any image available
on the web was accptable to Wikippedia. I think they had some problems then.
Of course there are some people who take delight in Deletion. Kind of a
 sadism.

So to keep such images in Commons, either Indian government or Commons
needs to have a policy addressing all pictures for which original authorship
is unknown, or at the least about paintings of God which is widely
available. Until then, we can either assume good faith and keep this image
or start a new mass DR for all the images in the category Hindu deities.

Indian government will not do anything. But Wiki Commons can do
something. Another thing which is surprising is there is no assumption of
Good faith. I am a volunteer. How do I benefit by the uploading of the
image? Actually most volunteers like me do end up by spending money, because
my internet connection is not free. I do not use an internet connection
provided by any organization. This atitude of there is no assumption of
Good faith will put off many people.

I can not imagine anybody from India suing Wikipedia over an obscure
 painting in a temple.

Now they are quoting the U.K law on which the Indian law is modelled to
say that Wall paintings are not covered. This would effectively stop upload
of many of the paintings in temples.

But in India in a public temple, the installed idol itself is held to be
the temple’s legal owner, and the beneficiaries—those to whom the endowment
is dedicated --—are the general public. Does this change the position? I
 wonder. I have posted this.

I am having another problem with this image. There is one person called
Pebble101 who is bent on deleting this image from the article. He deleteds it
time and again for no reason. He could be the author of the last unsigned
 remark on the deletion page.

The problem is there is nothing I can do. When I had such problems

wiki.wikimedia.in separated. but I would do the oposite (ie: redirect
wiki.wikimedia.in to wikimedia.in but with the actual content - like in
wikimedia.de and wikimedia.pt. A diferent portal would only be useful if
was like wikimedia.fr one (in their case the wiki is almost not used at
 all).

And talking about that: Do you people have it wikipedia.in domain? Because
if a chapter would give good use to that would be you (with the thousand

the code, we are updating to place in our wikipedia.pt (now a redirect to
 pt.wikipedia.org).

 Hi Anirudh

I brought up the issue with wikimedia.in domain earlier, why not have it
redirect to the wiki itself and add a section for blog/news on wiki. It
would seem like there would be a lot of redundancy between the two, and it
would only require more work to update both separately.

Either way, I have experience with smaller wikis and new mediawiki
installations. I can help with the wiki itself and better organize it.

is available in 273 languages, out of which 20 are Indian. Bengali was the
third Indian language in which Wikipedia was made available,” says Jayanta
Nath, administrator of the Bengali Wikipedia. The archive boasts of both
English articles translated into Bengali as well as articles written by the
team just for the Bengali archives. To access Wikipedia in Bengali, the user
has to type “bn.” instead of “en.” before Wikipedia in the address bar. *
* *

*Because it is not just translation and has its own group working on the
content, the Bengali Wikipedia has an independent character and identity.
But while the English Wikipedia has 3.6 million articles, the Bengali site
has only 22,000 articles. “Our strengths are famous personalities from
Bengal, Bengali literature and Hindu religion,” says Nath. The user base is
also considerably lower compared with the original English online
encyclopaedia — 0.1 million against 1,000 million. “There are about 150
active contributors to the site from places like Bangladesh, West Bengal,
the US, UAE and other places,” says Nath. *
* *

*The users are not always impressed. “I have checked out the Bengali
Wikipedia. I find the articles in English more detailed. Plus, Bengali
Wikipedia follows a very bookish Bengali, not the way we speak it. It is
difficult to follow,” says Saikat Bhattacharya. *
* *

*An entry on **Chokh (eye) in Bengali Wikipedia reads: “**Chokh pranir
alok-songbedonsheel anga o darshanendriya. (The eye is a living being’s
photo-sensitive component and visual organ.)”*

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia India blog site is now ready

2011-09-22 Thread Jayanta Nath
Hi ,

Thanks for sharing. The design of the blog is very nice and clean. and
choosing the wordpress for creating the blog is the right description.

But i think there is a chance to improve the looking, overall functionality
and post writing style. I have found some weak points and i am mentioning
this to help in improvement.

   - the wikimedia logo and the name of the languages at the banner are
   resized in a proportional manner.
   - the button Join and the link it points (
   http://http//wiki.wikimedia.in/Membership-FAQ) does not work properly.
   - the post is written in a way that it look that someone is describing to
us, but no name is mentioned as the author.
   - i think there is FAQ section is necessary
   - a favicon should be added.

i am not sure who has made this blog site, but i think he is in this list.
just keep exploring with the wordpress, it is specialized for creating blog
as well as the other type of website.

These are my personal opinions, I just checked it once and i think these
improvements are necessary. There is a chance to add other functionality to
improve the performance.
If you think that I can help you then please let me know.

1. Apply on our own letterhead for participation
2. name address
3. required space : stall (sq. mt) / table
4. space allotted in the last two years
5. photocopy of current trade licence catalogue

sector, not the IT sector. And we are non-profit.

It is a good idea to remind our partners that although we're based on
Internet projects, we are not at all *about* the Internet, but about
  free
knowledge, and the creation and dissemination thereof.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] On the spot Chapter membership.

2011-12-05 Thread Jayanta Nath
Hi,

There are some free and open source minded/Linux group
members around Kolkata,They have some knowledge about Wikipedia's
philosophy. Some of our community member wants joint on spot payment
method,as like we have at WCI2011 . They are not so comfortable with other
method.Although On-spot India Chapter membership is not our main* *project
scope. If India community/Wikimedia India chapter feels wrong, we
can withdrawn this facility from this project.

I think we are going for numbers game here. Whats the point of on-spot
membership? Seriously, does having 50,000 chapter members do any great
thing for Wikipedia? I seriously fail to understand (in the past, future),
what can the chapter do with just so many members who do not have an idea
about Wikipedia community and many of whom may not go beyond attending
 meetups and conferences.

Sorry if am sound odd here, I just dont like this part of chapter, where
the chapter instead of instilling confidence in community and making them
members, chooses people who attend a meetup / conference / stall to become
its members.(In many cases makes someone member of chapter without having a
clue about it. I personally know this since my friend who happen to
accompany me to a meetup, just because he had nothing else to spend time is
a chapter member now) I do not mean any offense to any of those who sign
up(they may be genuinely interested, good guys), but just fail to
understand what we are trying to achieve with chapter membership numbers.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikimedia-in-WB] Kolkata W11 Meetup report

2012-01-18 Thread Jayanta Nath
Hi Everyone,

*Update on Wiki11 Meet
uphttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Kolkata/Kolkata8
:*
We were about 28 people together in Kolkata celebrating Wikipedia's 11th
Anniversary. :)

We started the meeting with a general introductory round. There were
students from Jadavpur
Universityhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jadavpur_University,
IIFT, Neetaji Subhash Chandra Bose Engineering College, some people who had
joined us for the Wiki Kolkata Photo walk, a reporter from Times of India,
an editor,Neelanjan Dasgupta
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Ne0Freedom,(User:Ne0Freedom)
who has been contributing to Wikipedia since 2005 (but it was his first
Wiki meet ever), a lot of newbies who wanted to know more about Wikipedia
and our various projects amongst several others. It was great to see that
about 50% of the people were new to Wikipedia family and joined us on this
special day.

Then Nitika (We are very proud where she have came first time in kolkata
and motivate us) spoke about various programs that the Trust is currently
involved in. Some of the new participants wanted to know more about Wiki
Loves Monuments competition, Chapters initiatives on GLAM projects, Offline
Project etc. Then Bishakha introduced herself and spoke about SOPA.

The introductory talks were followed by me giving a small presentation
about the various programs, Wikimedia India Chapter, Bengala Wikipedia,
initiatives taken by the Bengali community members etc. There were some
questions about using translation tools for Wikipedia articles.

We then celebrated Wikipedia 11 by cutting a yummy cake. :) This was
followed by Kalyanda giving a hands on training to newbies regarding how to
upload pictures on Commons, how to use a picture from Commons on Wikipedia
and basic Wikipedia editing. There were lots of questions about how to add
a reference, how to edit and Kalyanda addressed all these questions.

We have collected names and email addresses of all the participants so
thats its easy for us to follow up with them and invite them to other Wiki
activites that will take place in Kolkata.

*Next Steps:*
1. We are planning to organise a Kolkata photothon on the Chinese New
Year, 23rd January. As you know Kolkata has the biggest China Town in India
where there will be lots of celebrations on this particuylar day. Hence we
have decided to go down to China town and click pictures that can be
uploaded on Commons.
2. We'll try and organise a full WikiAcademy for all the newbies who joined
us for the celebrations to inform them more a about Wikipedia editing.
3. We'll soon organise a Kolkata Wiki meet up for Feb and invite all the
participants as plan of every month wiki meetup/workshop at Kolkata.
4. We want to start with WP: Kolkata where we all will do collaborative
editing and improve/add articles about the pictures/monuments/buildings we
had clicked during the previous Kolkata photo walk. Just for information,
we contributed over 450 pictures on Commons as a result of this photowalk.
5. Sucheta is organising a WikiAcademy in her college, Neetaji Subhash
Chandra Bose Engineering College on the 25th Jan. Over 70 students have
already registered for it. Jayantada and Kalyanda are supporting her for
this event.
6. Deepon is also speaking with professors/Chairman at Jadavpur University
to figure out the possibility of conducting a WikiAcademy there.

I looked at the talk page on Meta - thank you, Shyamal!

For those who do not know: OCR means Optical Character Recognition.
When we want to get archival documents onto the web, it's nice to have
photos of them, but it's even better to OCR them so that people can
clearly read, copy, excerpt, translate, and remix the text.

Is there a central list of the problems that OCR software (especially
open source OCR software) has with text written in Indic languages? If
so, I could help encourage people to fix those problems, as volunteers,
via a Google Summer of Code/Outreach Program for Women internship, via a
 grant-funded project (such as https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG
), or via some other method.

People who would like to make Wikisource more easily useful for Indic
languages might want to contribute to the Wikisource vision development
project that's going on right now:

 https://wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource_vision_development

The ProofreadPage extension (part of the Wikisource technology stack) is
being worked on right now in Aarti K. Dwivedi's Google Summer of Code
internship. http://aartindi.blogspot.in/ She might be interested in
knowing about these issues, so I am cc'ing her.

Also - just because people on this list might be interested! - if you
have an old historical map that you'd like to vectorize to get it onto
OpenStreetMap, try out the new Map polygon and feature extractor tool:

The edit-a-thon is a part of the 16 days of activism against gender

accessible and popular. The competition lasts for a month, starting on
January 1, 2014 and ending on Jan 31, 2014. The competition focuses
especially individuals and schools and includes some attractive prizes
including E-book readers, Tablets and selected books for those who lead
the scoreboard. In this competition, books that was recently released by
Kerala Sahithya Academy to its public collection will be digitised.

Details of the competition; There are two specific competitions

 *Competition for individuals:-*
This competition is for the general public. It includes typing and
proofreading of selected books. The main aim is to attract people who are
active in social media into Wiki Grandhasala activities. Those who wish
to participate in this competition should register before January 31st
2014. Here are the pages which are to be typed in as part of this
 competition.

 *Competition for schools:-*
Presently many student groups, through the IT Cell of their respective

  We can continue discussing there)

 Hi,

Thanks for the elaborate work plan.

 1. The way the budget is presented at

 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Access_To_Knowledge/Draft_Work_plan_July_2014_-_June_2015#Budget

is misleading. A good percent of this budget will be spent on staff
salary, travel logisitics and other things which will not be there if the
work is done by the community. So, this is not the actual cost needed for
the desired output but the cost arising because of the involvement of paid
 professionals.

So besides this way of presenting the budget, there should also be a
regular way of presenting budget like how the chapters are asked to submit
during FDC application. It can be noted that during the last round of FDC
funding application, WMIN faced very strict criterion regarding
 infrastructure cost, staff salary cost.

 2. I have an eerie feeling that the community development work in India is
getting outsourced to NGOs like CIS at the cost of crippling budding local
chapters like WMIN. The way Hindi Wikipedia seeks help for content
management (fixing Google articles) confirms my concern.

 3. Where can I find WMF's open assessment of the work done by CIS-A2K in
the previous year? How is the cost for the work done justified? If the cost
if justified, then the actual communities and the content they have
developed on their on own are worth many crores of Indian rupees. But, we
face strict guidelines when applying for grants whereas NGOs like CIS don't
 have that strict criterion.

 Ravi

Hi Dhaval, Lets hope ! May be WMF will answer the you questions specific.

 Hi Asaf,

Let me put everything aside and ask a few simple questions to you, as I
see you as a representative of WMF here.

 1. Why was WMIN denied the large portion of the grant requested and why do
we have separate grant to a private organisation?

 2. WMF have seen the results of previous funding to IP, which was a total
disaster, why CIS was chosen and is still considered to carry out
activities, even after refusing the grant for many of those tasks proposed
 by them (WMIN)?

 3. When are you (WMF) going to stop funding CIS and any other private
 organisation (other than WMIN)?

I will appreciate straight, short and simple answers. If they could not
be answered in length of less than double of the length of question,
 please do not attempt.

 Thanks,
 Dhaval

I will be responding to Ravi's further questions as time permits,

In the meantime, I protest against your behavior, Ansuman. It is
unacceptable. Despite multiple past recurrences of this pattern as well as
past apologies, here we are again -- you lash out with wild and inflated
accusations, generalizations, and hearsay; when challenged to provide
details and references, you gradually back down and often admit your
original allegations were entirely unfounded; nevertheless, you do not
apologize or retract your original statements (alternatively, you somehow
manage to apologize (as you do below) even as you attack indisciminately).
This is precisely the behavior that had cost you my respect before, as you
 mentioned.

I am interested in having good faith conversations with any community
member about our India strategy. As you have seen, I have responded openly
and honestly to Ravi's questions about our strategy, and those of you who
have had some conversations with me before can attest I speak my mind and
 do not keep you guessing.

I had done the same in response to your own questions previously
(contrary to your assertion that I did not), but it quickly became clear
you were far too bitter to be interested in actually discussing
constructive ways forward. For whatever reason (perhaps a personal stake?
is there some personal background you'd like to share with the community?
I think so.), you are far more interested in attacking CIS and/or WMF than
you are in promoting the Wikimedia mission in India and in your region and
 community.

I will continue to engage with those members of the community interested
in having a civil and fact-based conversation. (I thank Pradeep, for
example, for his calm contribution to the discussion (on-wiki, where I
shall respond), even as he expresses strong crticism and skepticism of the
 entire engagement model.)

I encourage the rest of you reading this to take Ansuman's ranting with a
large grain of salt. Get the facts (as distinct from empty assertions) and
judge for yourselves, by all means, or reserve judgment until you do.

Again, I will engage further on-wiki as soon as I'm able, but probably
 only tomorrow.

Asaf

Thanks Ravi for the detail analysis and questions. Few questions I've
asked before but nobody cared to answer till now, now being answered.
:-) Which these paid employess didn't care to put up in two years is now
 being out!

I'm extremely dissppointed, nobody (not even WMF staffs) cared to tell
the community these important things, which should have been disclosed much
 earlier in 2012.
I've asked, raised my concerns several times at meta; cisa2k talk pages,
vishnu's talk page, on this mailing list. But these paid employees didn't
feel the necessity to answer them!! One time someone even gone out of
context and talked about costing his respect but didn't feel the necessity
to respond further and tell these things..

If only WMF's intent has been clear to us and there has been
transparency in this project, I wouldn't have felt the necessity to blame
cisa2k for their terrible mistakes and incometencies.

If only i had known that WMF doesn't expect any real outcome but just
want to see how it goes, then i would not have asked those questions being
rude. You have wasted so much of my time!!

Even now I see no attempts to bring transparency. Clearly nobody cares!!
WMF is also responsible for this lack of transparecy but they don't seem
 to care much.

So far as per the ongoing discussion at proposal talk page, *there is
no transparency, it's not been disclosed yet who was involved when this
project was approved!* Few facts yet to be confirmed and questions

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia India Chapter affairs

2014-08-28 Thread Jayanta Nath
As you may be aware, two members of the Executive Committee of Wikimedia
Chapter India have submitted their resignations with immediate effect.
However, there has been not any internal action or response or a call
notice for an urgent Teleconference for further discussion on possible
actions from the remaining office bearers namely the Secretary and
Treasurer.

Wikimedia India Chapter is going through a critical phase with several
important and crucial decisions and deadlines pending. The surprising
resignations from two board members at this juncture has made this a
complex affair. We have very important timelines and deadlines to be
complied with, in the coming few days.

Due to the above critical situation, a resolution has been put forth within
the official Internal Wiki (board members' wiki) on whether to accept or
reject the resignations.

One of us from the EC will be informing you of the decision output of this
resolution duly.

This is for your general information.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia India Chapter: Current state of affairs

2014-09-01 Thread Jayanta Nath
Dear Wikimedia India Chapter members and other interested stakeholders in
the list,

Dear members,

The Executive committee of Wikimedia India has held an emergency
teleconference on their official DSNL channel on 31 Aug 2014. As salient
items on the agenda, the following topics were discussed and decided upon:

1. Earlier, Radhakrishna Arvapally, a senior chapter member and former
Chair of Bangalore SIG, was co-opted by an emergency resolution. The
resolution was passed unanimously. The resolution had also proposed another
senior member. However, due to heavy personal engagements, the second
nominee requested the EC to exempt from such considerations.

Radhakrishna was invited to the telecon and was officially welcomed to be
part of the EC.

2. Jayanta Nath, a senior Wikipedian from Kolkata and EC member, was
unanimously elected as the new President of the Wikimedia India Chapter.
Also, Radhakrishna Arvapally and Viswanathan Prabhakaran were elected as
the new Secretary and Treasurer of the chapter respectively.

3. Any decision about hiring is kept on hold for now. The current EC agreed
together that the opinion of the new EC (emerging through the upcoming
general elections) should also be taken on-board for a major decision like
this, since they are the ones to deal with the newly hired candidate(s)for
a longer term.

4. Another extra ordinary EC Telecon was scheduled to be conducted
tentatively on 02 September 2014, 9.00 PM to take up other urgent matters
pending for decisions.

This is for the general information for all chapter members and other
interested stakeholders.

Thank You,

Jayanta Nath

[Wikimediaindia-l] Report of the Board Camp conducted at Bangalore on 20, 21 22 September 2014

2014-10-03 Thread Jayanta Nath
: Subsequently, as per the
instructions by the registrar of societies, a formal request has been
submitted to the registrar which shall comply with the necessary legal
requirements for conducting the AGM and elections anytime before 31st of
   December 2014.]
   6.

The EC also decided to make the membership application process easier
and user-friendly by adapting to better technical means. This may include
the ability for a new applicant to fill up the form online and then create
a print-out. The membership-renewal process may totally bypass the need of
any physical forms. Instead, members should be able to update any changes
in their data via online forms and submit the same along with electronic
fund transfer. The EC also corroborated the possibilities for multiple-year
memberships up to 3 to 5 years.
   7. The EC also decided to accelerate the process for establishing
standard documentations on Conflict of Interest, Terms conditions for
staff, Code of conduct for various positions, travel and incidental
allowances policy etc. The EC initiated the basic steps to form a framework
for the Advisory Committee. These tasks will be pursued upon so that the
upcoming Annual General Body can ratify the same and put them into regular
   practice.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Extraordinary Circular-Wikimedia India Chapter

2014-10-03 Thread Jayanta Nath
Extraordinary Circular

Dated: 03/10/2014

During the past several weeks, there has been significant developments and
major changes in the team of governance of Wikimedia India Chapter
(WMIN). The Executive Committee (EC) effective as of now, would like to
clarify the sequence of events that unfolded and the remedial steps the EC
took as and when necessary.

   -

On August 27th, Moksh at 8:03pm tendered his resignation as the
President of WMIN Chapter as well as a member of the Executive Committee.
Within minutes, Pranav Curumsey too sent in his resignation from the
   position as an EC member.
   -

With this, the number of remaining EC members became 5 (Five).
   -

On 30th August, the remaining EC members immediately put up and passed
an emergency Resolution accepting the resignation of both Moksh Juneja and
Pranav Curumsey. This resolution was signed for by Jayanta, ViswaPrabha and
Nikita. Srikanth signed against this. Karthik did not participate in this
   resolution.
   -

Further, on the same day, another Emergency Resolution was passed to
co-opt two new members to fill those two vacancies. By consensus, two
senior Chapter members were selected to be the new EC members. All the
then existing EC members viz. Jayanta Nath, ViswaPrabha, Srikanth, Nikita
and Karthik unanimously voted for both these candidates.
Radhakrishna Arvapally, a senior Chapter member and former Chairperson
of Bangalore SIG was one among them. Due to severe personal engagements,
the other person gracefully refused to be an EC Member. Due to privacy
concerns, we prefer to conceal his identity.
   -

With this, the number of effective EC members became 6.
   -

On 31st August, an Emergency Telecon was held. Jayanta Nath was elected
as the new President as well as Radhakrishna as the new Secretary and
ViswaPrabha as the Treasurer. All the existing EC members (viz. Jayanta,
Radhakrishna, ViswaPrabha, Srikanth, Nikita and Karthik) attended this
telecon and all of them had voted for the new office bearers unanimously.
   -

On 2nd September 2014, there was another Telecon mainly to discuss about
the urgent pending matters such as elections, AGM, formation of an advisory
committee etc. All the Six EC members (viz. Jayanta, Radhakrishna,
ViswaPrabha, Srikanth, Nikita and Karthik) had attended this meeting.
   -

Soon after this meeting was over, Srikant submitted his resignation.
With this, the number of effective EC members fell back to 5 (five). This
necessitated the co-opting of two more members to the board of directors.
   -

During the next EC telecom, which was held on 5th September, Dr. Ekbal
Bappukunju was co-opted in. This was supported by all attendees (viz.
Jayanta, Radhakrishna, ViswaPrabha, Nikita and Karthik) unanimously. The EC
was now back with a strength of Six members. There was still one more
vacancy in the board to be filled up. EC decided to seek out and absorb one
more potential candidate from the list of chapter members.
   -

Finally, on 10th September, during yet another Telecon, Nikhil Kawale
was co-opted to the remaining one position. This meeting was attended by
Jayanta, ViswaPrabha, Dr. Ekbal, Nikita and Karthik) all of them
unanimously voted in favour of Nikhil.
   -

As is evident from the above, Wikimedia India Chapter would like to
state explicitly and assure everybody who may be concerned that at no point
of time during this period, there was a decision or deliberation that took
place without sufficient quorum or majority as stipulated by its Memorandum
of Association. Further, the Executive Committee itself was never in
minority as suggested by certain messages appeared in open mail lists.

The above circular is signed by the following members of the Executive
Committee of Wikimedia India Chapter effective as on date:

President: Jayanta Nath

Secretary: Radhakrishna Arvapally

Treasurer: ViswaPrabha

Karthik Nadar

Nikita Belavate

Dr. Ekbal Bappukunju

Nikhil Kawale
