My phone must have sent you a different email than what I typed on it,
because I don't recall typing the word "only" anywhere on my previous
reply. Maybe my memory's going, but I also vaguely recall typing
something about them being criticised for not doing something AND being
criticised for doing that very thing they were previously criticised for
not doing, which is rather more specific than "the chapter getting
criticised".

Hello everyone!

I've worked for Wikimedia UK since just before we hired our first Chief

August, I'll be leaving Wikimedia UK for a new role - still in London,
but doing something rather different, and with a fair bit more
responsibility. Those of you who are my friends will know what this new
job entails - I'd ask you to keep it to yourselves. To those of you who
don't, you're free to ask me on Facebook!

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Wikimedia UK under both Jon and
Lucy. It's really something to see how the charity has changed over the
years - from a small, absurdly hopeful organisation with limitless
opportunities, to a larger, but more stable and more focused charity
with a solid track record of events and partnerships, and with what I
firmly believe to now be (post-governance-review) the best governance in
the movement.

I have full confidence in the team of staff and volunteers here to keep
things moving forward, even if Richard Nevell does get overly focused on
castles from time to time. I'll be staying on as a volunteer, of course,
and I will probably focus my initial efforts on sending Richard Nevell
pictures of castles while he's working, which I'm pretty sure counts
towards our metrics.

On a more productive note, highlights of my time here include:

  * Learning to cycle in London (pictures not on Commons, although there
might be a video)
  * Our "Finance and Fundraising communal pickled onion jar", relabelled
"pickled fox" after went on the NHM Spirits Tour (pictures not on
Commons, except perhaps in the background)
  * The "Wikimedia UK does WLM" tour of an unlit Grade II listed
Victorian Public Convenience (pictures on Commons)
  * Driving Katherine Bavage to despair by uploading pictures of her to
Commons, and only then explaining what Commons is (I await the
inevitable deletion request from someone who takes this too seriously)
  * Participating in the Chutney Making from Waste Fruit and Vegetables
World Record Attempt, a World record attempt for amount of people
making chutney simultaneously (pictures not taken, too busy eating
chutney)
  * Wikimania 2014, which only those who served can
/truly/ understand (pictures on Commons, I imagine, although I tried
to avoid them)

I wish everyone at Wikimedia UK - volunteers and staff - all the best,
especially Daria, who now holds the crown for "longest serving staff
member". Working at Wikimedia UK has been an enlightening experience,
but also a privilege, and something which I will never forget.

Shoulder rig--some people like these, some don't. Are you doing a lot

Video light box.--don't you have a couple of these already? If you
have an event where you need more they might be worth renting.

A pair of this

Filters--could have sworn you have some. Anyway circular polarisers
are pretty useful. Anything else I'd wait for a specific need.

These

Extra batteries and memory cards.--Yup.

I can't comment on the battery life of the EOS M, or the 1100D in Wales,
but the 60D don't really need extra batteries. There's already 2 Canon
original batteries each of which last more than enough for most if not
all use cases.

Memory cards though, yup.

A bigger telephoto lens--You've got a fair bit of reach with your
current setup and there aren't really any cheap ways of doing this. If
you really want more than the cheapest decent option would be a second
hand Canon 100-400mm L IS MK1 which london camera exchange are
currently selling for as low as £650.
https://www.lcegroup.co.uk/Used/Canon-EF-100-400mm-L-IS-USM_153926.html
ebay may be cheaper.

It's not so much the need for a bigger one, but rather another one.
There's currently one for the 3 cameras that can use it. Personally,
there's events I can certainly photograph much better/at all with
another telephoto lens given the existing one being used in Wales currently.

To: Wikimedia Mailing List >

Dear Wikimedia friends,

**Call for Nominations - Affiliate Selected Board Seats**

This year the Wikimedia chapters and Thematic Organisations will select
two members of the Wikimedia Foundation Board.

We would like to invite nominations for candidates to be elected to the
WMF board in this process. Please help us by distributing this call for
candidates as widely as possible through such forums as mailing lists,
village pumps, and blogs.

*Role of WMF Board members*

The Wikimedia Foundation board provide governance and strategic
oversight of the WMF. The role of Wikimedia Foundation board members is
set out in detail here: https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Board_member

Successful candidates will bring expertise and understanding to help the
Board further its goals and ability to work effectively at a strategic
and governance level. The work of the Board is conducted in English
(though fluency in additional languages is an advantage) and the role
involves a significant commitment, including travel to several in-person
meetings in California or worldwide.

*Nominations and selection process*

Nominations should be posted using this form on Meta-Wiki:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliate-selected_Board_seats/2016/Nominations

If you need assistance completing the wiki-template, please contact one
of the election facilitators who will be happy to assist.

Nominations are open until the end of 8 March 2016 (midnight UTC). To be
entered into the ballot, a candidate's nomination must be accompanied by
a statement of support from a Chapter or Thematic Organisation, which
may accompany the nomination or be received no later than 22 March 2016.

The timeline for the selection process can be seen here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliate-selected_Board_seats/2016

There is also a selection FAQ here:

A moot point. Or a chicken and an egg issue?

I was not allowed to raise a motion from the floor that the question be
not put at the 2014 AGM (with regard to a Members' Resolution). In
other words, after some discussion, I wanted discussion of the item
stopped and no decision being taken.

The formal legal notice of a general meeting of a company must state
the general nature of the business to be dealt with at the meeting and
A resolution of the members of a company is validly passed at a general
meeting if (a)notice of the meeting and of the resolution is given .

Last year, a (non-statutory) email was sent on 27/06/2014 to all members
telling them to propose any resolutions by 06/07/2014.

Regarding that resolution last year well, I don't think an ultra
vires proposal should have ever got to the meeting, but the board wanted
differently.

formally notified of the event?

Well, you can't give a formal notice of a general meeting containing the
resolutions to be considered if you don't know what the resolutions are yet.

Having said that, the planning timeline did contain: 12 June - Warning
notice transmitted by email - Include deadline for resolutions, which
is apparently {{done}}, except the include deadline for resolutions
has since disappeared from the table. I am assuming Stuart's email [1]
to this list (rather than explicitly to all members) stating the same
day as our AGM is what Michael had in mind when he marked this item as
done.

I also see a number of the dates have moved later than was originally on
there, which is fine except the formal notice of AGM containing the
proposed resolutions (by board or other members) now won't be legally
given until July 3, the same day as members are supposed to proposed any
amendments. Deadline for that was originally scheduled to be the same as
board nominations, which has move a week to July 10. I don't see why the
amendments deadline can't be moved likewise.

[Wikimediauk-l] Upcoming Training for Trainers session in Edinburgh

2014-08-22 Thread Katie Chan
Hi all,

Wikimedia UK is running another of its Train the Trainers workshop. This
will take place on the weekend of *1-2 November in Edinburgh*, and we would
particularly encourage anyone from Scotland and the north of England to
attend.

The workshop will be delivered by a professional training company and aims
to improve delegates’ abilities to deliver any training workshop. It’s
especially relevant to anybody who already runs Wikimedia-related training,
or is very interested in doing so in near future.

The workshop is a chance to:

   - Get accredited and receive detailed feedback about your presenting and
   training skills
   - Get general trainer skills which you can then apply when e.g.
   delivering specific Wikipedia workshops
   - Share your skills with others
   - Help design a training programme that serves Wikimedia UK in the long
   term.

The course will run from 9:30 am-6:30pm on Saturday and 9am-5pm on Sunday.
A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. We should also be able to
cover travel and accommodation if you let us know in advance.

If you are interested in attending, please indicate your commitment by
registering on this page
https://donate.wikimedia.org.uk/civicrm/event/info?id=117reset=1 but
please note that places are limited.

If you are not able to attend this time but would like to take part in the
future, please let us know by email to volunteer...@wikimedia.org.uk – we
will be offering more sessions in the future.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. We can also put
you in touch with past participants who will be able to share their
experiences with you.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Allegation of thefts at London wikimeets

2014-03-14 Thread Katie Chan
Hi all,

I can confirm that no Wikimedia UK equipment has gone missing. All of
Wikimedia UK's laptops and cameras are either currently with the office, or
based in Wales as part of the 'Living Paths!' project. The Wikimedia UK
office has also never received any complaint about personal properties
being stolen as a result of attending a Wikimedia UK organised event. Were
such a complaint to be received, it will be treated seriously and we will
assist the police in any investigation they may conduct.

Whether we are talking about a community organised event such as the London
Meetup, or a Wikimedia UK organised event, I would encourage participants
to exercise care for their belongings just as they would anywhere else.

The office operates an internal record of the chapter's volunteer equipment
both for tracking who has what and for how long, but also to enable us
produce appropriate reporting for the Board of Trustees and FDC.

Katie

[Wikimediauk-l] Accounts on the Wikimedia UK wiki

2014-02-20 Thread Katie Chan
Dear all,

As you may be aware, Wikimedia UK
wikihttps://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Main_Pagewas migrated from WMF
servers https://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page to that of WMUK back in
September. If you previously had an account on the old wiki, but have not
requested password for your account on the new wiki, please do so now.

With the aid https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56938 of the
WMF server ops, we are looking to shut off the old wiki in the next few
days or as soon as possible thereafter. If you haven't gotten your password
to an account on the new wiki yet by that point, and especially if your
account is not unified https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Unified_login,
then we will have no way of confirming your identity and you will require a
new account.

2014-02-12 Thread Katie Chan
Hi Harry,

I can confirm Wikimedia UK will run a separate process closer to Wikimania.
Any one from the UK who has already made an application through the
Wikimedia Foundation scholarship process and has agreed to share [their]
information with chapters and thematic organizations for purpose of
selecting and awarding scholarships will *not* need to make another
application. Anyone else can wait until Wikimedia UK own application are
open.

What do UK (in particular non-London) residents who want financial

I'm sure it would be useful to know before the scholarships deadline.

[Wikimediauk-l] Training the Trainers November 2013

2013-10-09 Thread Katie Chan
Wikimedia UK is committed to supporting our volunteers and to encourage
them to teach others how to edit Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, we
are running a weekend training workshop. This will take place on the
weekend of 23—24 November 2013 in Cardiff. This session is targeted at
volunteers in Wales and the immediate surrounding areas. We are especially
interested in editors of Wicipedia Cymraeg who work through the Welsh
language. However, both English and Welsh language editors will be welcomed.

   - Get general trainer skills which you can then apply when delivering
specific Wikipedia workshops
   - Share your skills with others
   - Help design a training programme that serves Wikimedia UK in the long
term.

The course will run from 9:30 am—6:30pm on Saturday and 9am—5pm on Sunday.
A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. We should also be able to
cover travel and accommodation if you let us know in advance.

If you are interested in attending, please indicate your commitment by
signing up on
https://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Training_the_Trainers/November_2013_event.
Spaces are limited to 12 places.

If you are not able to attend this time but would like to take part in the
future, please add it to the event page or let me know by email to
katie.c...@wikimedia.org.uk — we will be offering more sessions in the
future.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. I can also put you
in touch with past participants who will be able to share their experiences
with you.

Regards,

Katie

[Wikimediauk-l] Design a new banner!

2013-07-04 Thread Katie Chan
Hi,

We are currently in the process of re-designing Wikimedia UK’s Members
Newsletter, making it more relevant and the different sections more
visible. In order to get a new design, we are looking for volunteers to
create a new title banner. So, we are launching a competition for a new
Membership Newsletter banner. The deadline to submit your entry is 9am
(BST) on Wednesday 17 July.

Requirement: The banner should have dimensions of 500px by 200px, with the logo
of Wikimedia UK https://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia_UK_logo.svg and
the phrase Members' Newsletter incorporated somewhere in the banner.

Before you start, please make sure you have read the Wikimedia visual
identity
guidelineshttps://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_visual_identity_guidelines
to
be aware of the acceptable use and combination of colours and the Wikimedia
logo. The entry should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons under an accepted
license in the category Wikimedia UK membership
newsletterhttps://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimedia_UK_membership_newsletter,
with a link to the uploaded file emailed to me at
katie.c...@wikimedia.org.uk.

The changes to the newsletter won't just end at the structure. New topics
will be included, such as a regular op-ed piece and the inclusion of
additional quick updates.

If you are interested in becoming part of the editorial team, or have ideas
for new design or topics, please contact volunteer...@wikimedia.org.uk. All
suggestions are welcome!

Yes, they were passed without any opposes vote, but not every one of

Indeed. The voting record records the votes that were cast for/against/abstain,

Resolution to alter the composition of the Board to introduce co-opted

Resolution to revise the Election Rules, replacing Approval Voting

Yes, they were passed without any opposes vote, but not every one of

[Wikimediauk-l] Lists of UK listed buildings

2013-06-19 Thread Katie Chan
Hi all,

One of the task that needs to be completed for WLM to happen is to have
exhaustive lists of all eligible listed buildings on Wikipedia, using
appropriately formed templates instead of wiki tables directly. To get
everyone going, I have created the templates[1], which everyone is of
course encouraged to improve.

In terms of the actual lists themselves, I have created a tracking table[2]
so that everyone can see where we are and where work needs to be done. All
the columns should be fairly self explanatory, aside from the one on images
which is intended to track when someone has searched through Commons
Wikipedia for existing images and added them to the respective list.

Except for Wales, where lists didn't exist before, you can navigate to the
existing lists from [3]. As you can see, I have made a start on at least
one counties per countries so that everyone can see what I envisage them
looking like[4]. You can find a copy of the source data for England[5],
Wales[6], Scotland[7] and Northern Ireland[8] at the respective links
provided. There's also PHP scripts for manipulation of geo-coordinates
(latitude/longitude) to[9] and from[10] OS grid references, and also one
for conversion between WGS-84 datum (as used by GPS) and OSGB-36 datum (as
used by the Ordnance Survey)[11]. They may come in useful for manipulation
of the source data when creating the lists.

I should say here that the English list is brand new courtesy of English
Heritage who have recently completed a review of their licensing and
released the information where they previously declined to!

Aside from making WLM happen, completing these lists would improve a lot of
the existing lists on Wikipedia or create new ones where they didn't exist
before. This is something that can be done by everyone as time permits,
whether that is mass converting the source data into templated lists, a few
minutes spent looking for existing images and adding them to a list, or
copyediting the generated list.

Plese contribute when and where you can!

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] [Wlm2013-l] Lists of UK listed buildings

2013-06-19 Thread Katie Chan
Unless as a research project, someone go through every entries to see what
each particular listing covers and count manually, no one have the answer
to how many independent buildings or structures are listed. That's why the
heritage organisations talks about listed building entries instead, which
is also how I counted Scotland, Wales Northern Ireland.

The template for England is particular crude and in need of improvement.
The headers are chosen based on what headers are on the various existing
lists so that changing to templates don't lose us any existing information.
Some of the headers, such as architect and date listed could probably do
with being made optional. I'll see about doing that unless someone beat me
to it. The UID (or HB number) field is essential for WLM as tagging an
upload with that is how we know an upload on Commons is eligible for the
competition so yes, that would need to be added. With the number, we can
also link directly to each individual entries page on English Heritage
(likewise for Scotland Northern Ireland), instead of say Images of
England or some other website. The templates don't actually currently have
a separate column for references as I was having a little problem with
making template variables work inside a ref tag. I guess the solution
will be having to do it manually. Again, unless someone beat me to it, I'll
add that sometime.

[Wikimediauk-l] Wikimedia Foundation elections

2013-06-11 Thread Katie Chan
Hi all,

Now that the Wikimedia UK AGM is over, there’s a couple of other important
elections going on within the Wikimedia movement. The Wikimedia Foundation
is electing three (3) community members to its Board of Trustees, the
ultimate governing authority of the Wikimedia Foundation. In addition, the
community is also electing two (2) members to the Funds Dissemination
Committee (FDC) and also the FDC Ombudsperson.

You can find more information on all of this, including the candidate
statements, ask the candidate questions, list of eligibility requirements
for voters and information on how to vote on
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_2013.

As the work of the Foundation Board of Trustees impacts the ways the
movement pursuit its goals, and the FDC are involved in the grants making
process which the chapter was involved in last year and expects to be again
this year, I would encourage as many of you as possible to take an interest
and vote in these elections.

[Wikimediauk-l] WMUK Wikimedian of the Year award

2013-05-03 Thread Katie Chan
Hi all,

Some of you may remember from last year Wikimedia UK AGM, we gave out a few
awards to thank those in the UK or abroad who have helped the UK Wikimedia
movement. The idea was that this is going to be an annual thing. In light
of that, we would like to invite nomination for this year winners. Please
add your nomination on
https://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/UK_Wikimedian_of_the_Year_2013/Nomination by
5pm on 10 May.

For the WMUK Conference Committee,

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] [Wikimedia-l] Selection of winning bid for Wikimania 2014: London

2013-05-01 Thread Katie Chan
Congratulations to everyone who's been involved with the London bid.

Looking forward to seeing many of you in London next year!

On 1 May 2013 18:10, James Forrester jdforres...@gmail.com wrote:

 Dear Wikimedians,

On behalf of the Wikimania 2014 selection Jury, after review and
evaluation of the two final bids, we have awarded the conference to
London. Congratulations to the London team, and to the Arusha team who
also put forward a solid effort.

We were concerned this year to see that both bidding teams put forward
proposals which were costly and complicated, in contrast to the
Wikimania tradition. The Jury briefly considered re-opening the bid
for other teams, and asked both bids to present a simpler core budget
 and lower-cost options for attendees.

The London team took our comments to heart and decreased their core
budget to 20% of their initial proposal, and have committed to finding
ways to reduce the cost for community attendees.

We encourage future bidding teams to not give up their dreams, to keep
aiming for the stars, but at the same time, to not forget the spirit
of Wikimedia: a volunteer movement that makes creative use of limited
resources. We look forward to the proposed Wikimania Committee setting
out clearer guidelines on these principles.

The process to bid for hosting Wikimania requires a substantial time
investment, and we thank both candidate teams for their submissions
 and hard work.

 Yours,

 James Forrester

[Wikimediauk-l] Wiki Love Monuments 2013

2013-04-10 Thread Katie Chan
Hi all,

It's that time of the year when planning for Wiki Loves Monuments picks up
for those countries interested in taking part. In both 2011 2012, there
were discussions about the UK taking part, but for various reasons it never
ends up happening. I would really like to see it happen this year, and to
that end have started the associated page on Wikimedia Commons.

For those who don't k now, Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual photography
competition running in September around cultural heritage monuments, which
in the UK has in the past taken to mean listed buildings. Participants
upload their photos to Wikimedia Commons, identifying it the subject of the
photo to be one of the qualifying monuments with the best photos nationally
and internationally winning prizes.

If you are interested in joining a working group to help with the
organisation, even just a little bit when you have time, please sign up on
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2013_in_the_United_Kingdom.
I would plan to have a phone conference in the near future to discuss what
needs to be done, when it needs to be done by, who might be interested in
doing it etc.

Regards,

Katie

Do you consider that's enough to make a decision from, or do you believe

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] [WMUK Board] Statement regarding Ashley Van Haeften, Chair of Wikimedia UK

The board statement was sent to the mailing list and put on the blog,
but I simply haven't had time (or the thought) to send out an email
about it to the entire membership list. We very rarely send out emails
to the entire membership list - usually only once a year, just before
the AGM. It's not good practice to simply hit email all, because it
tends to swamp uninterested people, who then end up unsubscribing from
the list. The majority of our communications are done through this
mailing list, or on the UK wiki, as all of our active members read this
list. Certainly, all our members are encouraged to join the UK Wikimedia
mailing list when they join the chapter. We're actively reviewing the
way through which we communicate with everyone, however - the 2012 Comms
Review has been seen by a few volunteers, and should be ready for
general feedback soon.

I would say a public statement from the board re. its chair on the
current subject qualify as important enough to merit an email to the
entire membership.

That's quite a bit lower than the approx. 300 we've been working with
since around the AGM. Has there been quite a few lapse in memberships in
recent months?

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Call for an EGM

2012-08-01 Thread Katie Chan
As I recall from the AGM, there was a suggestion that an EGM be call
sometime during the year to discuss changes to the voting system for the
board. If an EGM were to be call, I would suggest some time be set aside
for such discussion if possible.

I'm not sure whether that was an email to all members of Wikimedia UK,
or just those who have commented publicly and or privately on the matter.

I'm sorry David, but one can't have an organisation that's so closely
associated with said project and then just completely ignore the
project's community recognised dispute resolution body whenever we feel
like it. If you believe the decision is incorrect in this instance, then
address the issue at hand and why it's in WMUK interest for Fae to
remain where he is.
