[Wikitech-l] [GSoC 2023] Contributing to Wikimedia Foundation

2023-02-12 Thread Om Singh
Hi!

I am Om Singh, a sophomore pursuing B.S. in Physics at Indian Institute of
Technology, Kanpur, India.
I noticed that Wikimedia Foundation has been participating in Google Summer
of Code as a mentoring organisation for quite some time. I also found its
past Project Ideas quite interesting and thought-provoking!
I also intend to contribute to Wikimedia Foundation this Summer through the
GSoC program, and contribute to its mission of providing free education
through various means.
I have attached my CV with this email.
Can you please guide me regarding the Project Ideas for GSoC 2023? Is there
some webpage where I could find those Ideas?
Also, are there some known small bugs, which maybe I could fix, so as to
assure that I am capable of participating in GSoC?

Waiting for your reply..
With Regards,
Om Singh (+91-9122966490)

[Wikitech-l] GSoC proposal – help needed

2020-03-21 Thread Ostrzyciel Nożyczek
Hi!
I'm a student currently pursuing a MSc in Data Science and I've been
thinking of applying to GSoC with Wikimedia this year. For over a year now
I've been a system admin of a medium-sized wiki, I wrote a couple
extensions (you can find them here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Ostrzyciel) and some patches to core.
By being a sysadmin of a wiki I watch its performance closely and over time
I've discovered the single thing that slowed down the wiki the most was
InstantCommons. It turns out the ForeignApiRepo code is fine for a few
pages with little images, but once your wiki starts using Commons imagery a
lot, things get ugly, quick. Like parsing-a-page-takes-2-minutes-ugly. Or
the whole wiki can collapse if Commons isn't responding for some reason.
I think improving this would kind of correlate with Wikimedia's mission of
hosting the most accessible free media repository in the world :) I really
wish more people could use Commons extensively, and that would certainly
help it.
I did some research into that topic and came up with a few solutions, but I
am by no means an expert in MW architecture, I would be grateful if I
received some help from people familiar with Parsoid and the action API.
You can find a more detailed explanation here:
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T247406
I am also looking for mentors for this project :)

Thank you!

Dear Ms.,
I thank you for your answer. I am already a member of Africa Wikimedia

creating a user group for Wikimedia Developers in Tunisia. However, we could
not do that because we lacked time. As I said in the previous email, I am a
medical student and I just code for fun. I have several skills of HTML, Pascal
and Python. But, I am not a computer scientist. I am as well interested since
2009 in contributing to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Incubator and Wikimedia Commons...
I do not contribute to Mediawiki... As I saw, all contributors to Africa
Wikimedia Developers Project work on Mediawiki. However, I work on enriching
Wikidata using Python. My project is to use PubMed to enrich Wikidata with
Biomedical information. If there are members of Africa Wikimedia Developers
Project who like to join my project and support me, I will be honoured to work
with them.

2019-04-08 Thread Srishti Sethi
Hello Richa,

Thanks for your interest in applying to the Google Summer of Code program
with Wikimedia. If you are just getting started with the process, then I
will encourage you to consider applying next year as the deadline for
submitting a proposal is due in ~24 hours. And, the application process
requires not only submitting a proposal but following a series of steps for
which you have very less time:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/Participants#Application_process_steps
.

If you would like to contribute to Wikimedia projects outside GSoC, you
still can do, we have quite a few projects for new developers:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/New_Developers.

Best,
Srishti

2019-02-13 Thread Andrew Lih
Hi, actually that Research:Data page seems stale. It says:

"Wikimedia broadcasts every change to every Wikimedia wiki using the
Socket.IO protocol," whereas the current preferred way is to use SSE. You
should take a look at: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/EventStreams

I recently created a web app to visualize live Wikidata edits to artworks
by watching EventStreams, so feel free to ping me if you have any questions
or want to build off that.

2019-02-11 Thread Srishti Sethi
Hello Kaushik,

It is hard to tell from your email what your project is about, how you are
going to develop it, why is it important for Wikimedia, etc.

As you are looking for someone who could mentor on your proposed idea, it
might be helpful if you could provide more details to have further
discussion with them.

Mentoring organization results will be announced on Feb 26th. In the
meanwhile, you can read a few good proposals linked from Step 8 here
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/Participants#Application_process_steps,
and if Wikimedia gets accepted, you can write a proposal following the
instructions in Step 9.

The initial draft proposal does not necessarily need to be polished but
contain key details!

Cheers,
Srishti

I would like to work this out as my Google summer of code-19 project for

[Wikitech-l] GSOC project for multiple watch lists - looking for mentors

2017-04-01 Thread Techman224
Hello,

Sorry if this is cutting it close to the deadline, but I’m interested in doing
a GSOC project over the summer to implement multiple watchlists for users.

What I have in mind is first, deliver a minimum viable product where users can
add/remove/change custom watchlists. If time permits, it can be integrated into
other components, such as notifications, a way to add pages into custom watch
lists from the page itself, the API etc.

I’m looking for potential mentors. In particular, someone who knows how to get
around Mediawiki’s codebase and can help me guide coding and development. If
there is any interest let me know!

Thanks,

[Wikitech-l] GSOC 2017/ Outreachy Round 14: Interested in being a mentor?

2017-02-07 Thread Srishti Sethi
Hola hive,

We are in the process of submitting Wikimedia's application for Google
Summer of Code 2017
and Outreachy
Round 14 .

Do you have any projects in mind that you would like to mentor?

Do you find anything interesting in the Possible Tech Projects
 or the
Community
Wishlist: Not-top-ten wishes (need-owner) column
 on the Phabricator
workboard?

If you are interested, I will encourage you to add the following project
tag(s) to a task on Phabricator: *#Google-Summer-of-Code-2017* or
*#Outreachy-Round-14* and *#Outreach-Programs-Projects*. And, we'll take it
from there :)

For both programs, the student application period will start on February
16th (Outreachy) and February 27th (GSOC). Students will work on projects
between May and August.

Cheers,
Srishti

[Wikitech-l] GSoC 2016 | Porting catimages to pywikibot-core

2016-05-17 Thread Abdeali Kothari
Hi,

I'm a student from Chennai, India and my project is going to be related to
performing image processing on the images on commons.wikimedia to automate
categorization. DrTrigon had made the script catimages.py a few years ago
which was made in the old pywikipedia-bot framework. I'll be working
towards updating the script to the pywikibot-core framework, updating it's
dependencies, and using newer techniques when possible.

catimages.py is a script that analyzes an image using various computer
vision algorithms and allots categories to the image on commons. For
example, consider algorithms that detect faces, barcodes, etc. The script
uses these to categorize images to Category:Unidentified People,
Category:Barcode, and so on.

If you have any suggestions and categorizations you think might be useful
to you, drop in at #gsoc-catimages on freenode or my talk page[0]. You can
find out more about me on User:AbdealiJK[1] and about the project
at T129611[2].

Alangi, I was very happy to see that you made it. When you started
contributing half year ago we told you that perseverance usually brings
fortune (maybe I didn't say it with these words) ;) and here you are,
with a well deserved GSoC internship. And indeed, you seem to be the first

Since your project focuses on Wikidata, please consider sending this

Hi everyone

I am Alangi Derick and also d3r1ck on the IRC. I was selected in the GSoC
2016 program and was opportuned to work on the project titled "Integration
of IFTTT support for Wikidata" and I am very happy to be the first African
GSoCer in Wikimedia Foundation. This is indeed a priviledge and I wish to
thank everyone that guided me in this movement to attain this level.

I specially want to thank my mentors (Stephen Laporte, Marius Hoch, Lydia
Pintscher, Benedikt Seidl and Sam Tarling) for helping me before and within
this program. Also I won't forget to thank some very key org admins for
their great help when I just joined the movement (Quim Gil, Brian Wolf,
Andre Klapper), I really thank you all for your help.

I will love to keep working with you all so that I can better shape my
future in Wikimedia and also hope to see you all in person when the time
comes :) and also to all Wikimedia Developers, I shall keep in touch and we
all shall make the movement better in the future.

A "senior contributor" here refers to someone who's been actively working
with MediaWiki for a quite long time now. Typically, mentors for a project
are the senior contributors. It's a yardstick we use to measure whether a
project is big enough for GSoC.

It's only one.
"3 weeks for senior contributors" is meant to provide a rough idea /
ballpark figure to mentors how big a project is supposed to be.

[Wikitech-l] [GSoC 2016] Query about the ideas' project time

Hi, I'm Li Linxuan, a second-year student from Peking University, China. I'm
familiar with using C/C++ and have experience of using Python. I have also
participated in some projects including making games and game-bots.

I am interested in the "Accuracy Review" project, but there is a note saying
the estimated time for a senior contributor is 3 weeks. Other projects in the
idea list have the similar estimated time. So should we complete more than one
project during the three-month internship or just one?

Thank you.

[Wikitech-l] GSoC'16 and Outreachy'12 is around the corner

2016-02-08 Thread Tony Thomas
Hello all,

Google Summer of Code 2016 [1], and Outreachy'12 is closing in, and this
year we have a few change in rules. We are lifting our intern participation
limit of one GSoC/Outreachy with Wikimedia per student, from this year.
This was discussed [2], and repeating configuration is expected to make
sure continued work on ongoing projects, adding up to the goal of gathering
in more long term contributors.

Please note that a previous intern who had participated in one Outreachy
project can still participate in 2 GSoC rounds with Wikimedia, but not
three ( which would total 4 internships ). The change came after Google
announced its new limitation of maximum 3 GSoC per student in one lifetime.

We need to get all the previous interns and mentors back in action, and
closely update the GSoC'16 board [3]. Find some interesting task that can
be a possible tech project ? do update the Possible-Tech-Projects board
[4]. Your thoughts are also welcome[5] on getting our previous
interns+mentors back in action.

[Wikitech-l] GSoC & Outreachy IRC Showcase

2015-09-22 Thread Niharika Kohli
Hello!

Google Summer of Code 2015 and Outreachy Round 10 ended last month, and I'm
happy to report that 9 of our initial 10 projects passed successfully. As a
result, we have a couple of new features to Pywikibot - support for OAuth
and Flow, two extensions for VisualEditor - language proofread extension
and graph extension, three altogether new extensions for MediaWiki - one
for Newsletters, another for combating spam and yet another for handling
banners on Wikivoyage and, last but not the least, an awesome new search
feature for TranslateWiki.

If you want to know more about any of these projects, come join us on
Thursday, September 24th at 1530 UTC[1] on #wikimedia-office for the
projects showcase. Here's the Phabricator event:
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/E69
that you should get subscribed to.

Hope to see you there!

Congratulations and welcome folks!

After setting off on the yellow brick road of MediaWiki development [1] you

You have a great opportunity to point out each twig you stumbled over as

current round. I'm pleased to announce we have 9 interns for GSoC and 1 for
Outreachy!

Congratulations to everyone selected and to the mentors who have put in
much hard work in selecting worthy candidates. Also thanks to those who put
in hard work but could not be selected. We had limited projects and had to
make some hard decisions. We hope you'll keep contributing to Mediawiki and
try again for the next GSoC/Outreachy round.

We have a general guide to being a successful intern at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreach_programs/Life_of_a_successful_project
It's
still under development and we'll be adding more details to it as we move
forward in the program. The main pages for the respective programs are at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code_2015 and
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreachy/Round_10

[Wikitech-l] GSoC and Outreachy Selection Process

2015-03-28 Thread Niharika Kohli
Hi there,

The application deadline for GSoC and Outreachy has passed. We have
received:

- 44 GSoC applications from 43 candidates
- 10 Outreachy applications from 10 candidates including 5 who have also
applied for GSoC

Several of the projects have received multiple proposals, making it hard
for out mentors to choose the best from all the applicants. Everyone is
invited to join in the selection process and actively ask the candidates
questions about their proposals.

The GSoC proposals submitted can be found at
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/google-summer-of-code-2015/

The Outreachy proposals submitted can be found at
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/outreachy-round-10/

For our students:

If you have not yet created a task for your project proposal on Phabricator
yet, we encourage you to do that as soon as you can. If your proposal is
complete and you have completed one or more relevant microtasks, you can
sit back and relax now. If not, you should complete your application as
soon as possible.

For the mentors:

All mentors must join the GSoC/Outreachy review websites (
http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/homepage/google/gsoc2015 and
https://outreachy.gnome.org respectively) in order to privately evaluate
the candidates.
I want to take the opportunity to remind all our mentors that under no
circumstances are we allowed to reveal the results of the selection process
before April 27th 1900 UTC when the official list will be out on Melange.
Hence, no hints or resolutions must be given out on the Phabricator tasks
or on Melange.

Some resources for the mentors:

- Guidelines for possible mentors:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreach_programs/Possible_mentors

- Our selection process:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreach_programs/Selection_process

- Lessons learned from the previous rounds:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreach_programs/Lessons_learned

By April 13 we need to decide how many slots we want to request in both
programs. In GSoC we request a number of slots to Google which we might or
might not get. In Outreachy, we fund some slots, we might request more and
then we might or might not get them.

Questions? Just ask.

Thanks,
Niharika.

Indeed, you can see three GSoC project proposals blocking that task
(including the one Vicky submitted today). We are expecting at least one
more from @Tinaj1234 based on her comments in that task.

All this to say that there is no need to point new candidates to this

-
Google Summer of Code and FOSS Outreach Program for Women interns and
mentors are invited to this IRC meeting to showcase the work done and share
any ideas for the future. We are scheduling two hours because of the amount
of projects involved, but the length of the meeting will depend on you.

This is how the showcase will work:

* We will start from East to West, based on the location of the intern.
First stop: Taipei.
* Each intern (or mentor if the intern can't make it) will point to the
project page and a demo (if possible), and will add a short comment written
in advance. We will leave a bit of time for comments questions, and then we
will move on.

The open discussion will follow, if time permits.

[Wikitech-l] [GSOC 2014] Demo - Parsoid Based Linter

2014-06-25 Thread hardik juneja
Hi Everyone,

I am a GSOC student working with Parsoid Team [1]
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Parsoid to build a Parsoid based linter
(Linttrap) [2]
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Parsoid/Linting/GSoC_2014_Application.
Lintrap will detect broken wikitext found on the wiki pages and will
also collect
stats about certain wikitext usage patterns.

Currently, for this demo, Lintrap can detect 4 types of broken wikitext, But,
other kinds of issues could be detected in the coming weeks and months :
 * Fostered Wikitext : Eg [3]
   http://lintbridge.wmflabs.org/_html/issues/53a2fe1e94641d9101f8e8b2
 * Missing End Tag : Eg [4]
   http://lintbridge.wmflabs.org/_html/issues/53a2fca994641d9101f8e72a
 * Missing Start Tag : Eg [5]
   http://lintbridge.wmflabs.org/_html/issues/53a2fdc394641d9101f8e850
 * Stripped Tags : Eg [6]
   http://lintbridge.wmflabs.org/_html/issues/53a2fd4394641d9101f8e819

Linttrap also collect information about transclusion usages where multiple
templates are used to construct a DOM structure [7]
http://lintbridge.wmflabs.org/_html/issues/53a3026794641d9101f8ea81. Here's
our stats page [8] http://lintbridge.wmflabs.org/stats.

Once a page is parsed, Lintrap uses parsoid based logger facility to log
them to a web service. We call it Lintbridge [9]
http://lintbridge.wmflabs.org/. Currently Lintbridge is hosted on
Wikimedia Labs and use mongodb to store all the issues. Lintbridge offers a
REST api which can be used by bots and other applications to fix the broken
wikitext. Linttrap uses this REST api to store issues into Lintbridge.

We have also built a HTML app on top of Lintbridge [10]
http://lintbridge.wmflabs.org/_html/issues. This is a basic app for now
which is used to demonstrate linttrap abilities. But, It is quite useful as
it is today. Feel free to browse over the issues.

  * You can use the links in the table to filter the issues.
  * Click on issue type to filter issue by issue type.
  * You can filter issue by page too.
  * You can use Fix All to fix all issue for that page.
  * You can even use filters on the top bar to filter by Wiki and Type.
  * Each issue contain a info about wiki, page, revision on the left and
the wikitext snippet on the right.

Just for the demo of this working prototype, we have collected issues by
parsing 1000 picked from http://parsoid-tests.wikimedia.org/topfails
http://parsoid-tests.wikimedia.org/topfails/0. If you want to try the

[Wikitech-l] [GSoC] Request to review the requirements for mass migration tools project

2014-04-23 Thread Pratik Lahoti
Hi all,

I have been accepted into the Google Summer of Code 2014 and will be
working on the Tools for mass migration of legacy translated wiki content
project [1].

As per the project timeline, I have drafted the requirements [2] for this
project after discussing with my mentors - Nikerabbit and Nemo_bis. It
would be great if the translation admins and translators have a look at the
requirements and let us know if they have any other requirements from their
side.

Please mention them on the corresponding discussion page [3]. I would like
to get some feedback on the importance of requirements mentioned as
optional in that page.

I need to get done with this by the next couple of days, so I would
appreciate if you can give this a quick look. :)

Thank you!

[Wikitech-l] GSoC FOSS OPW selection process

2014-04-04 Thread Quim Gil
GSoC / OPW weekly update.

The selection process continues. Mentors' discretion is increasing, and so
does candidates' curiosity. Even if we have made most of our choices, we
don't know how many slots we will get, and we are bound to a requirement of
confidentiality before candidates are selected on April 21. More than two
weeks to go. Take it easy.

On Monday 7 we will request a number of slots to Google, and by Wednesday 9
we will know how many they have allocated to us.

At the same time, we will decide how many OPW candidates are we aiming to
select. We will commit to a number of internships that Wikimedia will fund,
and probably we will request the GNOME Foundation (organizers of the
program) an additional number of internships to be funded by their
sponsors, a request that they might or might not be able to fulfill.

Candidates can relax a bit. You are encouraged to finish the tasks you
started, and of course we won't stop you from starting new tasks. However,
you don't have to. Most candidates have delivered everything we needed to
evaluate them. Don't be surprised if your mentors are quiet these days;
Google, GNOME and Wikimedia are asking them not to hint or leak any
speculation or resolution. If your mentors need anything from you, they
will ask.

The next update is expected by Wednesday, once we know about the number of
slots available. Thank you candidates, mentors, and rest of the community
for all your work.

Re: [Wikitech-l] GSOC-2014: Project Proposal for A system for reviewing funding request

2014-03-30 Thread Maduranga Siriwardena
@Gryllida,
I really appreciate your feedback. They really helped me a lot. And thanks
again for your time.
Currently I'm modifying my proposal according to your feedback (Have done
some modifications and need to do some more).

As this is research oriented project, some details provided in the proposal
may change according to the requirements identified in the 1st phase of the
project. So I think feedback from all of you will help me to refine the
requirements of the project. As the requirements are not fully refined yet,
I have included only a rough time line that is also need to be refined at
the end of each phase for the next phase.

And certainly I am looking forward for feedback and be flexible to take
them into account as it is a basic way of learning. I am a quick learner
and interested in challenging work. So I am looking forward to contribute
to this project.

 Hi Maduranga,

I had shown you that your first mock picture may be changed a bit, and
linked you to a couple relevant pages which describe the system you'd be
 developing in more detail.

Now I also noticed that in the past experience section, I would suggest
that you provide links to your code contributions. The reviewers will want
to see what you coded without manually looking you up on the web.

As a part of what you'd expect, if approved, would be thorough feedback
from your mentors and Grant Review Committees multiple times throughout
your work. I hope you are sufficiently flexible to take the feedback into
account. It's a challenging task there. The mentors would also provide you
with code-base from a previous project which did similar tasks.

Re: [Wikitech-l] GSOC-2014: Project Proposal for A system for reviewing funding request

2014-03-29 Thread Gryllida
Hi Maduranga,

I had shown you that your first mock picture may be changed a bit, and linked
you to a couple relevant pages which describe the system you'd be developing in
more detail.

Now I also noticed that in the past experience section, I would suggest that
you provide links to your code contributions. The reviewers will want to see
what you coded without manually looking you up on the web.

As a part of what you'd expect, if approved, would be thorough feedback from
your mentors and Grant Review Committees multiple times throughout your work. I
hope you are sufficiently flexible to take the feedback into account. It's a
challenging task there. The mentors would also provide you with code-base from
a previous project which did similar tasks.

Gryllida.

 @Gryllida,
Again thank you for the reply and sorry for being late to reply back (last
few days I was busy with a conference in my internship place). I have one
more question. What is meant by

roles and expectations @ IdeaLab (this is for any ideas, not just grants,
ie GSoC things can also go there)

In your first reply(specially this is for any ideas, not just grants).

And please inform if there is any improvement needed to the proposal.

Sorry for misunderstanding. As it is mentioned that the Admin person who
  is
creating the new grant campaign can create the review criteria, the area
shown as a text box can be of different sorts. It is just a
  representation
of the scoring criteria. Actually I did not have much understanding about
what would be the scoring criteria. Your explanation really helped me to
   understand the use case.

I have forwarded your initial message to one of the mentors, so I think
they'd hand you some small test tasks to check your skills and add you
  in
to the GSOC project. (I have found 3-4 students interested and
  forwarded
them all so I hope you'll all make it to completion!)

Re: [Wikitech-l] GSoC FOSS OPW selection process

2014-03-28 Thread Quim Gil
Hi, an update.

On Friday, March 21, 2014, Quim Gil q...@wikimedia.org wrote:

Everybody is invited to join the selection process.

 https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Mentorship_programs/Selection_process

Mentors have started evaluating candidates yes/maybe/no in the GSoC and OPW
private sites. I have started checking the yes/no against the criteria of
our selection process, agreeing or not with the evaluation, and usually
leaving feedback in the proposal's talk page. Basically, I'm playing evil's
advocate, trying to push the announced goal of quality over quantity.

Next Monday, one week before our deadline to request a number of slots for
GSoC and OPW, we will start focusing on the maybes, resolving them in one
direction or another.

We still have three relevant proposals from active candidates that are
lacking confirmed mentors and a proper evaluation:

UniversalLanguageSelector fonts for Chinese wikis, by Aaron Xiao
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Xiaoxiangquan/UniversalLanguageSelector_Fonts_for_Chinese_wikis
Liangent and David Chan are interested in co-mentoring, they need help from
a developer familiar with ULS.

Automatic cross-language screenshots for user documentation, by Vikas S
Yaligar
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Vikassy/GSoC14
There have been some informal conversations, but there is nothing
confirmed. At least one developer familiar with our Coninuous Integration /
QA testing tools is needed.

Frontend for Vector skin CSS customizations, by Ioannis Protonotarios
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Protnet/Frontend_for_Vector_skin_CSS_customizations
No mentors confirmed (or mentioned at all?). At least one mentor familiar
with MediaWiki extension development is required.

Volunteers are still welcome! Mentoring or helping evaluating proposals and
candidates. Ten days to go, there is still time to make informed decisions.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code_2014

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/FOSS_Outreach_Program_for_Women/Round_8

By April 7 we need to decide how many slots we want to request in each
program. In GSoC we request a number of slots to Google, which we might or
might not get. In OPW we fund some slots, we might request more, and then
we might get them or not.

 Questions? Just ask.

[Wikitech-l] [GSoC] Chemical Markup support for Wikimedia Commons

2014-03-28 Thread Rainer Rillke
Chemical Markup support for Wikimedia Commons has been a feature
requested for a long time[1][2] and now I think it's time to act. Please
consider my GSoC proposal[3]. I will focus on molecules and reactions,
both supported by MDL molfiles, through a media file handler and a
JavaScript front end.

Spectra and analytical data, chemical crystallography and materials --
this is somewhat more complicated and I think; let's start it simple. If
there is sufficient time to play with CML after implementing MOL file
support, no one prevents us from doing so. But past experience has shown
that even simple projects grew into dimensions that were not expected
resulting in software that is not ready to use till today.

Curious about your opinion.

Kind regards
Rainer Rillke
