2005-12-09 Thread A. Huppenthal
Go get some Canopy client radios for $260 each, complete - check the
performance, ease to install and setup. We did homebrew for quite a
while and it has its downside as we're seeing. Just my opinion. You get
a nice spectrum analyzer built-in, 2 minute setup, 2 minute test once
its placed. Audible signal strength - no pc needed on the ladder. There
are lots of solutions. 5.2 / 5.7 ghz Moto stuff runs thousands of
subscribers. I'm not affliated with Moto/Canopy and don't ask me to sell
you anything.

Best wishes.

Subject: [WISPA] Intro/Karlnet/YDI/Terabeam/Proxim/Turbocell

Hello to the list...

My name is Mark Nash and I own & operate a little WISP of about 300
customers in Oregon.

For CPE, I started out using Breezecom 2.4GHz FH radios then switched to
Karlnet RSU's loaded w/Turbocell. Then the YDI/Terabeam/Proxim
series of
mergers & acquisitions happened and I've got products from all
companies but

they are all Turbocell CPE.

We have 6 WiPops surrounding our customer base (rural southern
Willamette

Valley). We're using Trango backhauls...I started out using them simply
because of their low cost and advertised bandwidth. I still have two
in use

from when the company was called Sunstream (I think it was 2002). I
remain

happy about that decision.

We started out with a bridged network then ARP changed my tune and we
went

to a routed design.

OK, so...there it is. For those of you who know what's going on with
Turbocell from the new Proxim, you probably know that I'm not happy
as they
have set out to discontinue the Turbocell client software. So I will
soon
have to purchase new AP's and shift some customers around because I
won't be

able to purchase Turbocell-based devices. That's the word from Proxim.
So...anyone heard any differently? I've also asked Proxim if we can
'downgrade' our Turbocell products to 802.11b and they are saying 'no'.

It's a you-know-what sandwich from which I'd rather not take a bite.

Does anyone feel my pain? Any way around these issues aside from
replacing

CPE?

[WISPA] Another reason to love the Barracuda...

2005-12-09 Thread Matt Larsen - Lists
Our mail server locked up on Wednesday afternoon with some hard drive
weirdness. All of the user data was okay, but after 16 hours of
filesystem checking, it was clear that it wasn't going to be up and
running on that hard drive anytime soon. After installing a second
drive, we were able to get a fresh new install of linux going with qmail
and copied over all of the old user data. Problem solved, except for
the 26 hours that the mail server was not accepting email.

However, our Barracuda box was accepting the messages and storing them.
After a phone call to Barracuda Networks, their tech support logged into
the box and it is spending the next six hours resending all 30,000+
messages. Oh yeah!

For anyone who is on the fence, jump over to the Barracuda side. My
Barracuda box has been a genuine lifesaver, beyond just stopping spam.

We have been on our own since they fired Reg.

Rick Harnish wrote:

I will not make any statements as to how long this will last.

We currently put our CPE's together using ARC Wireless 19 dbi panels, WRAP
Boards, POE, Power Supply, Hermes II mini-pci cards, 64 Mb Compact Flash,
and a license (SV-4100-H) Total cost of these excluding labor is about $320.

We are not building new Turbocell networks! We are only adding clients to
existing Turbocell networks and continue to build out mini-cells with
Star-OS and WRAP boards in a Hotspot format.

I don't know that you have much choice for Turbocell CPE other than build
your own.

Re: [WISPA] P2P & Worm Monitoring/Alerting/Control

2005-12-09 Thread Tom Andrews
I can't say enough about the guys at Imagestream. I'm a proud customer, host
their servers and have put my business in their hands on more times than I
have things to count them on. I've never had an issue they did not stop all
other work to figure out and get tweaked. We have just installed on of their
Rebel Routers in a shack at the base of the tower which feeds them their
internet. Scott, Josh and Eric are working on doing some hard core QOS to
run across my PTP link and having the added ability to do the QOS and P2P
tweaking before the packets hit the PTP link has resulted in much better
performance. Just the P2P work they have done has saved me a lot of problems
and bandwidth. To say the staff are friends is an understatement. Having
them on my wireless is also a big benefit to other WISP's as they have felt
the pain first hand of many of the problems we all encounter from time to
time a tower down due to massive ice loading, twice I've lost the AP on
that tower to storm damage and the last issue was my PTP link going dead.
Not only do I trust them but I rely on them and they have not failed me in
any way over the last 5 years.

Like the others that have spoken up here we use MT. Butch does all of the
work on it for us as I'm no router guy. Great stuff.

The only problem is that there is basically no factory support. And Butch
has a real job too. grin

I've been sending my consulting customers to www.imagestream.com mostly.
For about the same price that mt wants per MONTH for direct support you can
get a full year of service. And when we buy the units from them they come
with hardware and software support, pre programmed and with the firewalls
all set up and ready to go. Great people, I've met a few of the guys from
there eyeball to eyeball.

I LOVE my MT boxes and the gui is great. The lack of support is a deal
breaker for me though. I'm stuck with them now but starting over I'd
probably use something else.

If you have the pc's already laying around it's a far cheaper option though.
Even after paying the devil (Butch) his due to make it work right. (just
funnin with Butch here guys, he's THE man and should be charging more than
he does, he's that good)

Hope that helps!

 Subject: [WISPA] P2P & Worm Monitoring/Alerting/Control

I'm at the point on my network now that I really need to control
unnecessary bandwidth usage. The biggest problem is the p2p users with
their excessive upload, and worms come in a close second.

My network is comprised of a Cisco 3640, Cisco C4840G L3 switch for
segmenting, and Dell 3324 managed switches. I have run ntop in the past but
I believe it only reports interactively through the web interface. I
wouldn't consider myself too far off from obtaining an SNMP station/software
like SNMPc.

I'm needing to implement a solution that will monitor, alert on, and
control this type of traffic. Either not pass it or rate-limit it. I'm
interested in solutions that have been implemented, home-grown, tested,
failed, etc.

 Thanks in advance...

[WISPA] Fw: .ppt for FCC

2005-12-09 Thread Marlon K. Schafer (509) 982-2181

Hi All,

Here's a trip report from Forbes Mercy. He's one of the 4 man team we had
in DC last week.

These guys did a great job and the feed back from the FCC folks has been
very positive. This trip was done at their own expense and time. Please
give them a big thanks for the whole industry! It's guys willing to do this
that have helped drive many of the gains we have in credibility etc. at the
FCC. The people in DC don't often get to interact with the people actually
out on the streets.

In 6 or so months we'll want to send another team out there. Be thinking
about this and if you are willing to go, save up some coin and volunteer
when the call comes down.

On the team were:
Dustin Jurman
Forbes Mercy
Tim Wolfe
Matt Liotta

Take care all,

Here is report I gave to my customers:

I was fortunate to be chosen as one of five owners of Wireless Internet
Service Providers (WISP) in the United States to speak to the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC). I represented the WISPA and was the only
attendee from the Western United States, quite an honor. The meetings
that we attended were at the FCC headquarters in Washington DC.

This included meetings with Commissioner Adelstein, Chairman Martin's
Legal Counsel and a board of staffers from the office of engineering and
technology. They made up the WBAT Wireless Broadband Access Task Force
Policy and Technology divisions including the Chief of Staff. We met in a
series of one on one meetings and then finished with power point
presentations that we prepared for the board. This meeting was supposed
to last one and a half hours but ran up to four hours as they had a lot of
questions.

We face some stiff competition from the Cable and Telephone companies plus
some new competition from corporations who use licensed frequencies. The
Commission is interested in the "little guy" because the feeling in the
industry is that we are the innovators and corporations rarely are. We
brought Voice over IP telephones, IP Television and of course the original
Internet when the big corporations thought the Internet would be a passing
fad. In other words we have their ear. Plus we only come once a year
while the corporation's lobbyist feed them false information.

Among the issues we discussed was our constant need for more bandwidth
spectrum to keep providing more connections. The feeling at first was the
FCC was appeasing us with a frequency that was shared with everyone else
and in fact could have been easily overpowered legally by other types of
users. We have been very successful in providing Wireless Internet in
rural areas where President Bush really wants it. The Corporations have
stopped their expansion as soon building out didn't recoup the investment,
therefore the FCC is giving us more secure frequencies all the time and we
asked for even more. Another issue is power; in the wide-open West we
have to go greater distance in order to reach areas like White Pass,
Rimrock and the Nile. The current one-watt radio won't do that. In the
Southeast the WISP's said they couldn't have antenna dish's larger than
three feet or a hurricane could pull an antenna mast down. Something I
had never thought of. With higher power we don't have to use a large dish
but can make dozens of miles.

Other issues included expanding the "Over the Air Devices Rule" (OTAR) for
Satellite Dishes to Wireless Internet was discussed, securing the new
frequencies to be vendor neutral so competitive pricing can prevail, the
allowance of Wireless Broadband in the 700 MHZ frequencies referred to as
TV White space for heavily vegetated or hilly areas and, preference of
smaller WISP's access to regional purchase of licensed spectrum to prevent
corporations from lease and squatting in order to limit our natural
growth. We also covered a reporting form being established by the FCC to
track the number of Americans using Broadband Internet.

Lastly we spoke of deployment of Emergency High Speed Networks after
disasters like Hurricanes. The commission was interested to receive
feedback from hurricane Katrina and how after WISP's from across the
country helped New Orleans the city decided as one of their first action
to put up their own public wireless network. This essentially shut out
the network that was put up to help them by private providers. This
information helped the FCC understand how municipal Wireless networks
compete and interfere with successful private networks.

Finally, prior to the trip, we notified our complete congressi
