Re: [WISPA] MikroTik FCC
Mikrotik's certification of the R52 with outdoor antennas is an important step on the road to being able to build and certify a MT system however it is just the first step. Using the R52 with any of the antennas that it has been certified with will help a company obtain certification of a complete AP or CPE at a lower cost than running through the complete certification process because testing the R52 with these antennas does not have to be re-done by the test lab. In order to have Mikrotik gear that is FCC certified, the R52 still needs to be submitted as part of a complete unit and the remaining tests need to be performed before an FCC ID (Grant) will be issued thereby making the gear legal. Also, the Mikrotik software must dis-allow use on non-U.S. frequencies which the stock MT software does not currently do. jack Mac Dearman wrote: Travis, Excuse the copy paste from an earlier post I made - but here is what copied. I thought I would share some of MikroTik's FCC certified gear with the list. These configurations were tested by Rogers Labs, Inc back in July and made available on the FCC site months ago along with their FCC certification. John Tully also stated this morning that there is more certifications covering more antennas Routerboards in the very near future. Looks like PacWireless was a HUGE portion of antenna choice!! [WISPA] From Today's WSJ
REVIEW OUTLOOK Purblind Auction February 7, 2008; Page A18 The Federal Communications Commission is bragging about its latest wireless auction, with total bids of more than $19 billion after two weeks. But dig beneath those numbers and the picture is less rosy. This wireless spectrum is on the market because of the transition to digital television broadcast. As of February 17, 2009, TVs without digital tuners or cable or satellite hook-ups will go dark, and a big swath of the airwaves will be free for other uses. This spectrum can transmit data over long distances and penetrates walls much better than most current wireless phone spectrum. [Kevin Martin] But FCC Chairman Kevin Martin wasn't content to sell this real estate to the highest bidder. Instead, he embarked on a central-planning experiment, setting aside the two biggest blocks for special uses. The FCC's procedures require blind, confidential bidding, so there is much about the auction that we won't know until it wraps up. But it already seems clear that Mr. Martin's rules have damaged the value of otherwise choice spectrum and are harming the overall auction. For example, the FCC restricted the single biggest spectrum license for a public-private public safety partnership. The idea was that someone would buy it to create a nationwide network for first responders -- fire and police departments and the like -- with secondary use as a commercial wireless network. But the main lobbyist for that spectrum, former FCC Chairman Reed Hundt's Frontline Wireless, closed up shop before the auction began. So far, this so-called D block of spectrum has attracted exactly one bid in 40 rounds, and that bid is less than $500 million -- well below the FCC's $1.3 billion reserve price. The FCC designated the next-biggest block -- the C block -- for open access at the urging of Google, among others. The C block is not only large, but it divides the country into eight large regional groups, with the possibility of bidding on all eight as a package. It should be a top prize. But it only passed its $4.6 billion reserve price late last week, and the reason is almost certainly the FCC's open access rule. That rule requires whoever wins to open the network to all compatible phones or software. If you're spending billions on spectrum and billions more building the network, the fact that the feds might force you to share your network means greater investment risk. The bidding bears this out. Of the $19 billion bid so far, nearly three-quarters has gone toward the smaller bits of spectrum in the A, B and E blocks. Building a national network by cobbling together hundreds of these bits is inefficient and risky, and it doesn't serve consumers, who would get faster service and more flexibility from the larger blocks. But there's more. The FCC made these small blocks to encourage start-ups and new entrants to bid for a piece of the next-generation wireless pie. If the conditions placed on the C and D blocks are driving the big established players into the smaller auctions, then the new, little guys may well be playing in the same sandbox with the big, bad incumbents. The FCC's previous experiments with rigging auctions also flopped; witness the NextWave bankruptcy, which tied up billions of dollars of spectrum for years. Mr. Martin will claim victory in the auction no matter what happens. But what we'll never know is how much would have been bid -- and thus how much more the Treasury would have received -- if Mr. Martin had auctioned this spectrum without his favors for special interests attached. What and how much wind loading was on the tower? Normally even if you are at the rated wind load and things are properly built there is still a safety margin the engineers build in to a structural design. I believe MT v3 has a new wireless driver that is better. I'm sure Star-OS has their own special mode for greater speed. Last summer, we did a detailed, in-office analysis of throughput between the two OS's, using exactly the same equipment (a couple of Mini-ITX boxes) and just changing out the CF cards to switch between them. StarOS won hands down. It wasn't even close. Since then, any expansion has been exclusively StarOS. We still use MT for our main router. I really like their queue system. My dream would be the MT bells and whistles with the StarOS wireless driver. Probably never happen, but if I were MT, I would make a pretty offer to StarOS to license it. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Travis Johnson Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2008 6:55 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; WISPA General List Subject: [WISPA] MT vs StarOS Hi, Anyone care to help compare a Mikrotik based bridged AP/CPE solution to StarOS? Mark, Thanks for your report. I'm sorry that FEMA does not seem to be focused on meeting the real needs that people have. On the other hand, I'm sure that the FEMA lockdown did a good job of keeping Al Quida terrorists from potentially entering the disaster area to cause trouble. Without getting political...I'm not sure government is the right vehicle for this sort of job...no matter who is running the show. I'm sorry that FEMA does not seem to be focused on meeting the real needs that people have. On the other hand, I'm sure that the FEMA lockdown did a good job of keeping Al Quida terrorists from potentially entering the disaster area to cause trouble. I hope that our new President (whoever that may be) will prove to be a more compassionate leader who will be able to motivates FEMA (and for that mattter, our whole government) to once again focus on meeting the real human needs that people have. jack Mark Williams wrote: Myself and many others responded to Adkins, Arkansas yesterday... There was a great outpouring of volunteers, equipment, and supplies. Quite literally dump trucks, tractor trailers, and many more pickups w/ trailers hauling in various dozers, back hoes, materials, food / water etc. for clean up and disaster assistance. The FEMA administrators had the place in TOTAL lock down. They would NOT allow assistance efforts to happen. A phrase was coined ... that the government is more focused on protecting its rights to be government, than it is on assisting the coordination of REAL assistance and aid. Frankly, that statement sums up the debacle that is FEMA response. They completely HALTED a 100% volunteer relief effort! Then they requested that what was REALLY needed was CAMPING GEAR. I nearly lost it. For those who are not familiar, in Mena / Hope Arkansas there are literally HUNDREDS OF SQUARE ACRES of FEMA trailers and RVs parked and rotting to pieces thanks to FEMA's lame ass efforts to aid Katrina victims. Logically, if they needed housing, it would have been as easy as requesting the volunteers on hand to organize a convoy of trucks to drive to Mena / Hope and pickup the trailers and deliver them to Adkins / Clinton, etc. BUT ALAS, FEMA is not logical in their response. I came away from the experience feeling REALLY good about the American Spirit, it is clearly alive and well with in our people, but VERY clearly not alive in our gov't. The long term effects of such high handedness by FEMA will be disastrous, those who would typically respond will become complacent and apathetic and will no longer respond, because after all the Govt will handle it right? Sad times America, sad times. Something needs to be done about this... God Bless those whom are in dire need and I pray that things change rapidly. Unfortunately the media crews that were on location had no interest in pointing out the FEMA blockade AGAINST relief efforts. -Mark Williams On Thu, 2008-02-07 at 09:30 -0600, Scottie Arnett wrote: Sorry to reply to my own post, but we service the Macon County Tennessee area that was hardest hit. I'm not familiar with this router at all, but discussed it with their sysadmin. Apparently the need is for something that can handle 2000 sessions and has full 100Mbps NICs and can support that speed. I'm not a pppoe expert, but would a decent PC, with 4/8GB of RAM and mikrotik SW installed handle something like this??? Butch? or other MT experts? Or is this requirement way out of the MT league? Redback routers are very very good at what they do (PPPoX subscriber aggregation) I am not aware of something equivalent in the PC / OpenSource world. Not to side step your question, but what kind of Hardware Failure is causing the 'emergency'. We use Redback routers for our DSL subs, and have plenty of spare equipment on hand. Redback is untouchable in terms of PPPoE aggregation. Cisco is really the only other Router out there that is of Redback's caliber. We currently terminate close to 15,000 subscribers using a Redback SE 400. Re: [WISPA] pppoe server, Redback capability of other solutions?
Also, if you need help with Redback, just ask around. There's a lot of people with a lot of experience with those guys. Faisal from SnappyDSL who posted earlier could point you in the right direction and hook you up with plenty of spare hardware and setup information if desired. Perhaps in terms of getting it up and running, you may be quicker with something that you know and have a good feel for--ie intel hardware running Mikrotik. However, in terms of reliability, uptime, and scalability, (and I'd assume configuration options) Redback is the way to go. If you want something that is a little more flexible, go Cisco (but, you'd pay more for comparable performance). Price wise, Redback's are very attractive and very easy to get spare equipment for. Plus, you get _good_ hardware. Not throw CPU cycles at it and keep some extra boxes in the closet for when it chokes good; I mean swap out failed power supplies / Ethernet cards / CPUs without any downtime sort of good. Using PCs / Mikrotik is good when you can't get your hands on good gear at a reasonable cost. That's not the case in this situation... -Clint Ricker Kentnis Technologies ps...Please don't turn this into a flame war :). I realize people here love Mikrotik, and it has its purposes. However, in terms of field tested performance and reliability for PPPoE, Mikrotik is a PC based platform that has relatively few PPPoE deployments running under relatively light loads whereas Redback had a really large install base for high volume PPPoE termination and generally proved itself to be a very solid and scalable platform. This is an area that MT has shown considerable interest in as well as have several GOOD hardware products out there. The 1000 is going to be a contender. Not as expandable, but with the price vs performance, don't think you can go wrong. A non MT based product is the PoweRouter 732. There are treads on MTs forums that list 2600 PPPoE sessions with one of the processor cores on, moving 30 meg of traffic with power to spare. Plus both of these are industrial platforms designed to compete with Cisco. The 732 has a MTBF of 100,000+ hours. And I bet the 1000 is about the same. There are hundreds of WISPs across the world that run MT as their cores right now. I think in the next year or two there will be some serious contenders with MT based systems that will rival many well established companies, yes like Cisco, and get a decent market share. Re: [WISPA] From Today's WSJ
What this author so quickly forgets is, Spectrum is to serve the public interest not the treasury's pocket. And the Public pays more, when the providers pay more for spectrum. The auctiioon clearly will be a victory, if it means more than one or tow big companies get a peice. Tom DeReggi RapidDSL Wireless, Inc IntAirNet- Fixed Wireless Broadband - Original Message - From: Jeff Broadwick [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'WISPA General List' wireless@wispa.org Sent: Thursday, February 07, 2008 1:48 PM Subject: [WISPA] From Today's WSJ REVIEW OUTLOOK Purblind Auction February 7, 2008; Page A18 The Federal Communications Commission is bragging about its latest wireless auction, with total bids of more than $19 billion after two weeks. Thanks everyone! It sounds like suggesting an MT-PC based solution to my new upstream provider would not be productive in this situation. Sounds like 2000 sessions really requires a serious solution. I would not want to suggest something like this and have my customers suffer for it. Thanks again.
