But I'm looking at that Backfire dish. Looks good.

Grids are okay, I just have issues with the splatter. On the flip side, I
have two CPEs connected to a backhaul grid WAY off its path and towards the
backside just cause it was the best signal I could get.

We're looking to do some wireless in the neighborhood here. Looks like
the phone company has a tough time just keeping dialtone working
here. Judging by the ducttape marks on the right, it looks like it's
been this way for a while.

Anyone out there have a FTP server and at least 50M unused pipe (in

I've got some definite problems with an older pipe that I would like
to get fixed, I just need a test to somewhere outside of my network.

Upload testing (download to you) is where I'm seeing an issue.

Read the fine print in the contracts. With AT&T, if you call people
outside AT&T's network too much, they will raise your rates.

[WISPA] ftp for transfer test

2010-01-25 Thread Marco Coelho
Anyone out there have a FTP server and at least 50M unused pipe (in
each direction) that I can test a 50Mb/s pipe with?

I've got some definite problems with an older pipe that I would like
to get fixed, I just need a test to somewhere outside of my network.

Upload testing (download to you) is where I'm seeing an issue.

Read the fine print in the contracts. With AT&T, if you call people
outside AT&T's network too much, they will raise your rates.

I use the Pac grids with the feed that looks the same as the solid
dish feed, not the little metal reflector. The reflectors keep falling
off in wind, birds taking them, etc (we pulled FOUR out of a birds
nest after the client saw the bird take it). This client only lost 3,
we assume one is from another site down the road.

I am very interested in getting my hands on the new ubnt units with a
built in dish, yummies.

I'm using a lot of the Pac Wireless grids but only cause they're cheap. If
I had the cash I'd go with a dish, not a grid. They work find but in some
installs they may as well be an omni for all the RF they scatter.

For my PTP links I am replacing grids with dishes. Much lower noise and
more stable signal levels.

I have use PacWireless grids with good success. Only issue is that

We're looking to do some wireless in the neighborhood here. Looks like
the phone company has a tough time just keeping dialtone working
here. Judging by the ducttape marks on the right, it looks like it's
been this way for a while.

We mounted a couple antennas to a pole using a pole-pipe mounting kit

For the most part, though, it's all about the ARC enclosures with MT. The

I wish I was a bit closer to a POP to take advantage of it, but my Cogent
rep informed me that through the end of the month, they have a promo going
$400/100 megabit 1 year contract.  Only available at Cogent and carrier
neutral data centers.  These facilities are listed on their web site under
the network heading.  A complete building list (and not eligible for this
promo) is available in the service locator under Dedicated Internet access.

Not all of their host buildings allow roof access, but I believe a
significant number of them do.  I encourage you to build your network out to
these facilities.

Sure, someone's going to hop on here and complain about how horrible Cogent
is, but every carrier has their good and bad spots.  I'm sure I could find
someone to honestly say the same things about AT&T, VZB, Level3, InterNAP,
XO, MZima, etc., etc.  It doesn't matter the carrier, I strongly encourage
you to have more than one.

Feel free to blast the list with questions about building your network to
Cogent, routing policies to best combine Cogent and your existing provider,
etc.  These things would apply to any carrier, not just Cogent.

Satellite arm and lag bolts.

2" mast, drill 1/4" mount holes, through bolt with lags.

Pipe to Pipe standoffs. Discard clamp from one side. Lag bolt to pole.

I considered building a stand off bracket out of Unistrut and mounting it

Re: [WISPA] Bandwidth Promo

2010-01-25 Thread Justin Wilson
I have seen a network feeding 80 megs of cogent for about 3 months now.
No complaints for the users. But this network also has a BGP feed from
Tier1.

We have servers on a cogent link in downtown Chicago. No problems with
them and there are 200+ web-sites hosted on those boxes.

I kinda ruled out stainless hose clamps after seeing a solar panel fall from
the leg of a Trylon tower about a decade ago... Granted, there were two
sharp points (inside ends of the L shaped tower leg) that probably
contributed to the failure in high winds, but in this case where it's only
wood, that might work.

Re: [WISPA] Network Gigabit Switch Recommendations

2010-01-25 Thread Dennis Burgess
We have done both. we have done hardware based switching with fiber
networks, etc. But we also have done a 32 site routed homeland security
networks. BOth have their advantages. In the case of the hardware
switching that we did, we did this cause it is simply a fiber ring. In
the case of the homeland security network, we had every site connect to
at least 3 other sites, so there were many paths involved, and we wanted
the best path even with links that were not GigE.

In the case of that last ring we deployed, it was simply cheaper to do
10/100 switching than routing it all. Of course, we also were not
sending internet data either.

We currently use 100% Linux based routing and switching solutions. Works

great. (Our Custom, MIkrotik, Imagestream, whatever, its all the same
concept).
All tower devices plug directly into a port on our integrated Linux
switch/router.

The reason I was asking was.we are about to do a major network
overhaul,
and considering injecting some Switches in-line.
There can be many network design reasons to seperate switching and
rounting
devices at each HOP/Cell tower, (to many possibilties to list).

An example config Consider City A,B,C, and City B had GIg-E
connections
to A and C. At City B a Switch could be used to connect both Gigabit
radios
to create a layer2 backbone. And then a Router could still be used at
teh
City B tower which router had 1 gig connection to the switch also. (Or
could
even have two Giga Switch port connections). Then other sectors could be
put
directly to router ports. That would also allow for multiple OSPF
connection such as between non-adjacent Cities, if when appropriate.

So my intent was not to compare Linux to non-Linux Switches and which to

use, but instead to decide that if seperating Switch and Router
components
to seperate devices which features the switch component would be
responsible
for (versus the router) in the new design. My topic only referring to
core
Backbone Network design.

We have three options.

1) Radio1 to Router1 to Radio2. (Layer3 backbone)

2) Radio1 to switch1 to Router1 Port1 to Router1 Port2 to switch2 to
Radio2.
(LAyer3 backbone w/ switches to enable injecting (bridge) additional
devices
before or after the router.)

3) Radio1 to Switch1 to Router1 to Switch1(same) to radio2. (LAyer2
backbone, with LAyer3 routing at each tower for distribution).

The above is actually much more elaborate than simplified above
considering
often several backbones travel through a cell site, and redundant paths.

There can be other considerations such as Where is QOS done when
multiple methods are needed? For example, a backbone might want to
prioritize based on application service type. Where as a Router might
want
to prioritize based on Customer Class. I could invision LAyer2 switches

prioritizing VOIP, and Routers doing customer bandwidth mangement. Or
switching can add ability to better integrate redundant routers. For
example, without a switch a Gigabit radio cant be plugged into both a
primary and backup router. (Unless its a APEX that allows use of both
Fiber
and CAT5 at same time on seperate PVLANS)

What we have learned is that we need intelligence per Tower, if anything

just for testing performance. So we will always have high end Linux
router
devices at each tower to perform those tests.
The question we are deciding is should the second device needing less
intelligence be a switch or linux device.

I considered building a stand off bracket out of Unistrut and mounting it
directly through the hole with galvanized hardware but it seems a bit
overkill for a single omni.

If you are looking for Fiber based Switches, I have a number of
industrial DC switches, that include Fiber ports etc. We just got done
doing a 62 node fiber ring. I think they were around 900 bucks a piece,
10/100 only in this case, but included 30km fiber ports (SM). So they
did not have to have anything else. But there is other Gigabit version
and SFP versions as well.

Can any of these GB switches (or any brand) give realtime statistics on
mbps

I recognize SNMP can query a port's packet count, and the math done via a
third party utility. But I'm refering to logging in via telnet or web, and

having an easy weay to watch the throughput passing?

The reason I'm asking is that this is relevent for Bandwdith testing of
