Depends on the roof material.

Such a rig on the ~100year old wood/tarpaper roofs here in St. Louis would
probably cause a depression to form under the bucket.  This is why I have
to use rather wide base under the cinderblocks, to spread the load across a
couple rafters.

How about using a 5 gallon bucket and concrete a 5 ft pole into it. Lowes
bucket = $5.00, bag of concrete = $3.73, and a 1 ½ EMT conduit = $12.00. All

Piece of aluminum 5/16" thick maybe 12x12 inches or whatever suites you - I 
usually get them 8x12 so they fit on top of a wall nicely when needed.  
Drill 1/2" hole about an inch in from each corner.  Weld an aluminum pipe 
to the middle about 2ft tall maybe 1" to 1-1/4 diameter.  Drill small hole 
near base so water can get out.  Take that and a tube of good silicone 
caulk and you can put a two foot pole that won't rust anywhere you want it 
(shingle, metal roof, soffit, wood panel, fiberglass, cement, stucco etc 
etc...)  It wont come off, you don't have to drill any holes and you can 
explain that the roof under it is more waterproof and stronger than it was 
before you put it there.  I should sell em and call then plop-a-pole's

Skywalker's $55 one doesn't have a mast but you can grab a piece of conduit
from Home Depot for ten bucks and cut in half and use one for each side.

We use wood pallets with cement blocks when needed. Wood pallets are free

Harbor Freight foam puzzle mats work alright as well for pads.  $6.99 for 4
on sale almost every week.  I'm with Josh though.  A pallet with some mats
under it works wonders.  If you find a source for the plastic pallets they
work even better.

Pretty sure the roof is rubber, but I haven't been on it yet. Roof mats are
definitely a good idea.
Years ago when I worked at a WISP, I think we used rubber truck mud flaps.
Cheap and can be purchased locally.

Yep, sorry for not being diligent about mentioning (or photographing) the
roof mat.  None of the rooftops I've mounted on are metal, but even still a
roof mat is a good idea to keep the wood from slowly rotting away the
tar-paper or whatever the roof is surfaced with.

Thanks for the tip about using a stall mat!

B VERY careful when using treated wood on a metal roof. It will attack 
and eat right through it.
I caught my first do-it-yourself mount before it got through the roof of 
a multi-million dollar house.


At a minimum use a roof pad. If you can't find one for cheap then ask 
around your friends with horses. Use a stall mat cut to the right size.

I think those are 1/4" lag screws and washers.  The hen is optional.

I sort of had that thought in my mind already, but couldn't envision how to
make a bottom piece to hold down the tripod. Now that I see a photo, I may
run with this design.
I can get the tripods and masts locally, plus a quick trip to the lumber
store to pick up pressure treated lumber and a couple of cement blocks.

We use wood pallets with cement blocks when needed. Wood pallets are free
